The only Harry Potter games I’ve played are Sorcerer’s Stone for PC, and Chamber of Secrets for PC and GBC. I remember all of them being really good! The PC games had a vast amount of content and exploration, and you really felt like you were in the world of Harry Potter. Hogwarts was big and had a lot of secrets to find, and the music was all absolutely fantastic. The GBC game was a 2D RPG, and not as great as the PC games, but it was still pretty fun (and way better than the games you reviewed here). My favorite was definitely Sorcerer’s Stone for the PC.
It saddens me that these newer games don’t even come close to the standard set by the older games.
Once I found out HP was written by a women, I was like “Ooooooh now it all makes sense.”
actually, at least the games 1-3 and the quidditch world cup are pretty fun, they also clock in at over 20 hours (give or take a few depending on the game,) but they still beat the crap out of these games… and they were on much weaker consoles.
This just shows that every company saw how loyal everyone was to harry potter and decided to stop trying and to save money because no matter how little time, effort, and money they put into something labeled “harry potter” they would make boat loads of cash…
Wow what a waste of development :/ as for one of your lines in the review Joe, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (GBC Version only) gets really good reviews and has a high level of challenge not only in the final boss but in quite a few bosses, not only that it’s in a Final Fantasy esque turn based style of combat, each character has a unique ability with their own stat bases. Each spell is more powerful or less powerful against certain types of enemies and each spell can be leveled to about level 3 in which it’s power and mp consumption is at max.
If you want to play a GOOD Harry Potter game pick up your GBC and Harry Potter and the Chamber of secrets and enjoy that one won’t disappoint.
If there’s one great movie licensed game it’s this one. (Prisoner of Azkaban isn’t too shabby either, keeping the same combat system anything after that though is horrible.)
@Umster so yeah the one your son probably loves is either 2 (gbc) or 3 (gba)
every time i see a new movie licenced video game i just cringe, yeh once in a blue moon there will be one thats half playable but the odds of getting a good one are stacked against us. although i must say one thing for the earlier Harry Potter games (i got a few for my son, not sure which ones though) and that is kids love them, and my 7 yr old son is no noob, he loves my old school clasics like golden eye, halo and Link to Past.
Tbh, if I remember correctly, the old games were a bit more imaginative and explored the world a bit. Still, I do believe that the movies themselves left out WAAAAAAY too much stuff out of the books, and the world of mages itself had a severe lack of fireballs in it…and the only good and fun spells went to the dark side. Still, great review, had quite a few chuckles paired up with maniacal laughter.
They should give happy potter to a company like Bio-ware or Bethesda or other RPG companies.
They should make a game that goes through all the movies, and have the school as a fully explorable place. Like harry 1 and 2 games and then expand.
oh wait.. lego creator kinda and lego harry kinda.. why cant they do it now? i would play that game
The first 3 games are great, so great that I would love to play them again. I have played them on PC so I have no idea about console versions, you had a lot of freedom, but you couldn’t cast spells freely, but it still was a blast. And the first game has the best quidich, you aren’t stuck following the… what was it called again, nvm, you actually had to look for it and that attempt to grab it.
And the quidich world cup is ok, the only thing realy good about it is the fancy moves you can pull of, other than that it is almost a spam fest.
So yeah, if you have a PC(wait what? of course you you own some sort of computer) and find the first 3 games(as in the first 3 movies, not some side stuff) buy them.
I remember playing Sorcerer’s stone and Chamber of Secrets on the PS1 and I remember them being pretty fun. At the very least, you got an idea to explore hogwarts and different spells (probably, I cant remember to clearly). although I do remember in Chamber of secrets that after you beat the game, you cant go back to hogwarts without starting a new game, so you can only play a wizard duel against one of the 4 houses.
Joe,I thought you said in your Thor review that you would never review a movie based game again, that you couldn’t handle the shitiness anymore?Anyway the first two games were fairly decent.
The third one was also pretty decent. Kinda like Zelda, with spells in stead of items. All the spells were unique, and none felt like each other. I played it a lot when I was younger. All the playable characters had individual spells, and it wasn’y all that short from what I remember. It’s a long time since I played it the last time, but I think I still would be able to enjoy it now.
This is why i never buy any new consoles. Ever heard of Baldurs Motherfucking Gate? That’s all i need when it comes to magic n stuff.
There are about 300 spells in there, and most of them are useful, at least in some cases. That game was released like 15 years ago. The sequels improved vastly after that. I still play it to this day.
And that’s the story behind my refusal to buy new consoles. My 200 MHz computer still offers me more excitement and freedom of choice than any of the glittery dogshit Hollywood (or whatever it is) spews out.
Just sayin is all….
yeah these two games are bad but joe don’t stereotype the previous games i have played the first three games they were great fun
I am Disappoint. I was hoping this game would be great.
I must say that I’ve only played the first two games in the series but those two are really fun i must say and I do recomend them!
(first one for PC and second one for GBA)
It’s incredibly sad that the last two games in the series were so atrocious. I will say though that the following are worth playing:
Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets on Gameboy Color: Both of these games are RPGs and are almost identical aside from the story, and the Chamber of Secrets improves on the gameplay in a number of ways. I’ve sunk countless hours into these games over the years.
Prisoner of Azkaban on the Gameboy Advance: This is an RPG just like the 1st and 2nd one, but obviously with a massive improvement on graphics. I found that the game was a lot shorter than 1 and 2, and though it had a new combat system I still enjoyed 1 and 2 on the Gameboy Color more.
Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets on Playstation 1: While the graphics are pretty horrible, there’s something about these games that just makes them fun to play. While they aren’t always true to the books, the deviations are still highly enjoyable.
Lego Harry Potter: If you haven’t heard about this one being perfect yet then you’re living in a hole. This game follows the storyline in from books 1 to 4 in such a fun way. It’s a blast to play and I can’t wait for the sequel.
Now that I think about it, Lego Harry Potter might be the best Potter video game.
I remember I had Sorcerer’s Stone on my computer when I was a kid, and it was really good. The Harry Potter games work best as action-puzzles in a world of magic. You should get Lego Harry Potter for that very reason. It’s fucking fantastic.
Major props for the Pogo mix at the end of the review!
While I’ve never played any of the HP games, from what I’ve seen the first 6 games usually tried something new and had a sense of identity.
Joe, you might like Order of the Phoenix. It’s not a great game, but it lets you loose in all of Hogwarts to explore and find secrets. It’s probably the best for a hardcore fan since the whole castle is open to you. And the first six games don’t have that Gears of War/Call of DUty shooting in it. That was just the Death Hallows games.
[wiseass]
A half-assed game coming from EA!!!!!???? Who could had seen that coming?
[/wiseass]
But it looks like that Lego is proving itself to be the only company able to actually do licensed video games well.
Telltale’s pretty good, too.
yo joe you’re just not being very fair at the end! the first one in the PS1 was a blast to play! i never played the rest of them but at least the first one was pretty awesome
I actually got a couple of HP games on PS1, and I remember enjoying them thoroughly. In fact, they had some things that weren’t even in the movie, but I think they may have only been in the book. If that’s the case, it was probably great, because games based on books that have movies are usually better than the movie game ever could have been (see Scott Pilgrim).
Here some info for harry potter games and which one to play.
The 2 harry potters for the game boy color are both good rpg.s but if you have to play one a harry potter rpg play the prisoner of Azkaban for the gameboy advance. Use emulators
Next up the chamber of secrets for the pc is good and from what I hear the console version who was different from the pc is also good. harry potter 1 both the pc and console(I only have the pc) good. There.s also 2 play station 1 games but I cant find anything about them on the internet they probably sucked but considering the gbc games were superior to the gba games maybe the same thing happened with the ps1 games.
Harry potter 3 for the pc was okay if very short and I don’t know about the console version.
Everything after that sucked.
The first couple of games that were on Playstation 2, Xbox and Gamecube were quite well done. They each played like a zelda game with a great amount of exploration and unique dungeons to battle through. They are much better than these seem to be. I really think you should consider giving them a try.
Didn’t Chronicles of Riddick break the Video game movie license curse?
One gem in a pile of trash. Just because one game could break free doesn’t mean every game can. Besides, this “curse” should have died long ago with Goldeneye 007 or Aladdin or Super Star Wars.
I know the first couple games were more adventure focused. That makes more sense.
I’m going to have to disagree with you on your thoughts about some of the previous games, Joe.
Back when I was younger, I played the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th game based on the movies, and “Harry Potter: The Quidditch World Cup”. I must say that 1-4 were really fun, the gameplay was ok, the graphics were ok, and they brought out my inner completionist
The Quidditch one was boring, and frustrating at times, but not too bad. I never finished the 5th one, but I remember, after starting the game, being really bored after a while…I haven’t even tried the 6th game, but I bet it is just like the 5th one.
The games you just reviewed are horrible. I’d like to forget they ever existed.
Forgot to say that the games 1-5 gave the player the freedom to explore Hogwarts inside and out, find a bunch of secrets, spells were learned through spell challenges, and the beans were the currency of the game
I can still remember the frustration from trying to draw the Stupify…or was it Flipendo…symbol >.< that looked like a small tornado. Or was it the unlock spell, that looked like a keyhole, that gave me a lot of trouble drawing it….
It’s quite a shame, but I’m glad that the movie-licensed games are finally over. I really hope we might actually get some quality Harry Potter games now. I don’t think it would be too difficult, would it? Create a student as they begin their education at Hogwarts and attend classes/complete missions, learn spells, play Quidditch, win the House Cup, try to become a Prefect, fight for House Elf rights, etc. It wouldn’t have to take place in the same timeline as the ones in the books (if anything, I would hope for fresh characters and plots). I mean how badass would it be to wander Hogwarts and meet students and professors and house elves and Filch and everyone else with Mass Effect-styled dialogues and a leveling-up/perk system similar to Fallout to learn new spells and abilities. Hell, the Harry Potter universe is so vast that it wouldn’t even have to take place at Hogwarts, but I think Hogwarts would be a pretty good canvas to work with for the sort of video game I’m describing.
All of that sounds great, but with Voldemort now defeated, there needs to be another source of conflict, something big and with high stakes. I’m not sure what could fill out that role, though.
Well, now that they’re not rushing to release games along side the movies, maybe they’ll be able to do some neat stuff with the licence. I for one always wanted to see a game modeled after the Persona games but set at Hogwarts. Something that spans all the books storyline wise.
You should play the first one on the PC, I remember having fun with it when I was younger, it was pretty decent, and you could walk around explore the school and its sroundings, gathering housepoints, puzzles, platforming, fights where all the spells did what they where supposed to do. I think I might play through this game one more time, that is if I can find the disc.
I think the closest we’ll ever get to a Harry Potter RPG is the Philosophers Stone for the Gameboy, That game was actually pretty awesome.
Have faith Joe, their are decent potter games…but you have to go way back to get to them. looks like everyone else has also pointed them out but the good (but few) good games deserve to be pointed out.
The Plasystation and Gameboy versions of Philosopher’s Stone, Playstation and GameCube versions of Chamber of Secrets and GameCube of Azkaban are all pretty good with much more content in them.
Give them a shot, they’ll cheer you up after this traumatic excuse for video games.
Hey Joe, what about review of the whole season of Back to the Future?
Good review. I enjoyed the first game when I was younger. It had collectibles and the game play wasn’t monotonous. There was different things to do as you progressed, from exploration to minigames. It was a nice game. I played a little of the second which wasn’t as good as the first, but it was okay. After that, things kinda get fuzzy since I didn’t really bother with them since there were other games out there.
These latest two are pretty much rock bottom, you got that part right. But at least the beginning of the Movie games were okay. I don’t know when EA stopped caring, but I’m glad I pulled out before this atrocity.
hey Joe good review. when i saw how bad these games were i was shocked. I’m a huge fan of the films and the games. i have to let you know the other games are nothing like this at all. for one you got to explore Hogwarts fully which was amazing you could play mini games or progress the story whatever you liked but it was definitely more involved than these 2 games. this is such a slap in the face to all harry potter fans. it really feels like they have put in so much effort with the other games, as they follow the movies exactly, but this is awful. zero effort was put in and i’m sure as hell not paying any price for this tripe. i bought part one which i will now trade in. i feel ashamed to have it sitting next to my other games. fuck you EA and WB Games.
The slo-mo yell of the game duration gets me everytime =D
Yeah I liked the early games, funny enough the PS1 game seems totally different than the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube version of HP1 (which was remade around the time of the 3rd movie). I played a bit of the second one and it was okay. But if you really want an enjoyable Harry Potter gaming experience, go for Lego Harry Potter! Somehow they got everything right with that one, and it’s even better than other Lego games!
You shoud try Harry Potter 1-3 games Joe
The first one is a rly decent but linear action-platformer game :]
The second one is probly the most built out one with lots of secrets, bonus challanges etc etc. (probly the best of them all)
The third one is pretty mouch a bit upgraded 2 but theres a bit less content in it (its not bad but its here where things starting went wrong)
Ow ye one more thing, if you plan to play these do it on the PC, the console versions (except 2) are a bit lack luster
I can’t really speak for all the games, but the PC version of 2 was a pretty good, and the GBC version of 1 and 2 were fun, if slightly shallow RPGs. And Quidditch World Cup is a fun way to kill some time.
Hey Joe, great review! Enjoyed it a lot.
If you want a fun Harry Potter game with lots of exploring and a more “magical” feel to it, you should definitely try the second game, which is the best of the bunch, or maybe the third game.
The second one has all of Hogwarts, lots of exploration, Quidditch, Magic Duelling Club, a nice story, and will take you over 20 hours to finish easily if you want to do some of the side quest stuff
The first four games were pretty good. I never played anything after that. I liked Quidditch World Cup except how slow it was and it would become a struggle to get the ball down the field to score as the difficulty grew because there was ample opportunity for the opponent to steal.
I will admit, watching you geek out about HP just made me that much more of a fan Joe.
Anyways, I figured the games would be bad. I loved the first one on the PC a lot, but I couldn’t even make it ten or fifteen minutes into the fifth one for the Wii when my sister let me borrow it. No me gusta.Plus hearing McGonnagal’s voice… no… just no… Hell, they could have gotten Jim Dale (the guy who reads the books on tapes) and he would have done a better job!
Angry Joe, I’m shocked you lumped the other games in with this.
I’ve played the second one and I can assure you that it was a satisfying experience. I’m actually working on hunting them all down, or at least The first four.
I played 2 of the 360 games, not these two, but the two that came before it.
They were alright, not great, but alright.
Rewatched your review again. And may I point out that while you can “bet” that they are not good games. It is not fair to bundle all the games together and bash them in their entirely while you haven’t played them.
Thanks for the Deathly Hallows game review, I’m sure yours opinions are valid. But I still liked Chamber of Secrets and the Quidditch World Cup game that I played.
BTW was your first Potter film Goblet of Fire?
I wouldn’t say all of these games are *complete* garbage. Quidditch World Cup is fun for a little while, and some of the earlier games are good for kids. I also kind of liked Order of the Phoenix on Wii, if only for the controls. But all in all, Harry Potter as a gaming franchise has been a huge waste of potential. Could we get an MMO? Or a Bioware RPG? There is so much potential for expanded universe content here, but it’s all been wasted on movie tie-ins.
Though I’ve heard good things about Lego Harry Potter, but it’s pretty hard to mess up a Lego game.
Gonna backup the supporters of the first games here. They might’ve had kind of… samish qualities between themselves and, as the films they were based on, were aimed at a younger audience, but they were quite extensive third person action platformers, full of extra content, true to the material they were based on. It was a steady, solid concept that carried the series through… at least the first 4 games I think? I admit, I didn’t follow the franchise much after that.
But yeah, those games actually were worth the money. So the quality of these two games is seriously baffling.
I played chamber of secret game and remembered liking it. It really wasnt bad at all(except the abundant graphic glitches which I suspect it’s my outdated graphic card or driver at the time). And I played the hell out of the Quidditch World Cup Spin-off. Loved that one.
I know EA made the early PC ones, and those were pretty good. It’s a shame to see they completely ruined these recent ones :/
Bloody edit time thing… -grumble-
I do have the full series (apart from the more recent two) upstairs. My brother liked them. So I may have to watch those again, see what all the fuss is about. Its been quite a while since I watched any of them and maybe my view on them will change. However yeah I really did like the first, my favorite part was when they enter the Diagons Alley (I think thats the one) where he starts getting his wand and such. Mainly because, me being around the same age as Harry at the time, my mind just filled with ideas about the other stuff they sold there and how cool it would be to go to a store for a working wand… I don’t know… Just loved that part.
Looking at the first game and looking at these games it really is a big shame. It would have been nice to have explored Hogwarts with this generations visuals (even if they do look a little dated) I don’t understand why they couldn’t just keep with that formula.
But yes these games look like tripe, should be held up as an example of bad tie in games, 2 hours and 53 minutes to complete a £40 game… I’d be pissed with that if it was an 800msp XBLA game. That’s just not cricket. Even the other clearly lazy and rushed tie ins were longer than that. These game just looks so soulless like no one really cared for them at all… I know they probably had a tight deadline and such however many-a-tie in games have managed to be good and get past all that… Like Spider-Man 2, The lord of the rings games… Batman Begins (which was pretty good despite being short).
Though those games looked like they had some soul behind it, like a team that wanted to get it done. Here it just seems so lazy and silly.
I haven’t played an Harry Potter game since the first one on the PSX, I remember that one being pretty good actually. You got to explore the school, do plenty of side quests and learn new spells which I thought was pretty cool. Honestly haven’t followed much of Harry Potter since the second film though.
I liked the first film and first game, they really had a got amount of imagination and my head was set around the beauty of this world and such. However after that I think it started to get boring for me so I bowed out of the series. Watched a few others like Goblets of fire and the other Harry film where (SPOILER Serious is killed off) however I didn’t much care for them, the mystery of the series was no longer there for me.
just got back from the movie. But yeah as has been said, there are good Potter games
Azkaban is easily the best
Well Joe, not all the harry potter games where bad, I(as with all the other comments) would suggest the second and third games as they where free-roaming games through out the hogwarts of those respected movies, and while there not perfect, you’ll probably have much more fun with those games than with these.
Yeah, the second and third ones for Ps2 are preety good =D
But after the forth one…..Crapy as fucking hell .-.
your scar moved..
also, did someone say philosophers stone?

Joe……. In Canada it’s known as the Philosopher’s Stone………….
Joe, you had a really great idea there in the Wizard Duel kinect thing. I can already see pvp matches online and off.
-Utilizing the microphone for calling spells in conjunction with your body movements. Spell mastery so you don’t have to use the words every time.
-a strong defensive mechanic that can use spell blocking and repelling to help against the inevitable spammers.
-A deep emphasis on exploration and research within Hogwarts to learn new spells.
-a “defense against the dark arts” type class to gain a certain level of proficiency in casting that can also be used as a tutorial for the game.
lots of possibilities particularly for exploration, not necessarily for a full Potter story, but to deepen the lore of the universe as a whole.
just a quick thought
It’s interesting, whilst the movies matured and got darker, the video games got darker… and more monotonous and bad. Hopefully in some 10-20 years time we will have games like Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic based in Harry Potter Lore to make up for this sorry cash grabs.
I’d given Both a 1/10. Minerva’s voice was just… wrong.
And I beat they didn’t even do the best scenes of the book and Films either (Tale of the Three Brothers and The Princes Tale.)
You should really play the first 3 Harry Potter games for PC. Great open world RPG elements. They were some of my favorite games as a child. Not sure about the Console games as I never played those but the PC one’s are great.
Gears of Wands…
It’s Bellatrix, not Beatrix, Joe
Not surprising in the least. It’s as shame, both the movies and the books manage to maintain great quality all the way through to the end, it’s too bad the games couldn’t do the same. And clocking in at under 3 hours is inexcusable. Absolute bullshit.
Joe complaining about the characters opening doors reminds me of Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force. In two instances, a character says “I wouldn’t be much of a [blank] if I couldn’t open a door!” XD. Can’t remember which ones said it or what they said in the blanks (seeing as it was two different characters), though.
Heh. . .If the licensed elements were entirely removed in favor of original characters and settings, Deathly Hollows Part 2 seems like it would be only slightly below average (for the 2-3 hours it lasts). At least then it wouldn’t have the albatross of lore expectations hanging over it.
*Puts on Fanboy continuity rage warning sign on his for head*:
imPedementta is supposed to throw up a small section of invisible wall to impede your opponent NOT BE FUCKING MAGIC MISSILE!
It doesn’t do anything involving invisible walls, it just slows down people, but doesn’t stop them entirely.
But yes, it’s far from magic missile.
Call of Duty: and the Deathly Hallows
HAHAHA Pogos harry potter video in the background
I remember playing Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets on PSX as a child and loving every minute of it. I just replayed these and sure, they arent the best games ever but they are good and certainly among the best movie licensed games there are.
Probably has been said but the first Harry Potter games were much better. At least from what I’ve heard. They were kind of a easy platformer with a lot of exploration and learning things about Hogwarts thrown in. Basically everything you’ve said that those games needed.
ow, Joe… you never played the firsts three games are you ? Philosopher’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban are pretty cool.
they have their own style of gameplay : total freedom is a semi open environment. they follow the movies while also incorporating content from the book and unique stuff. they also had these ”Spell Challenge” linked to the story which we’re huge nice platformers. there was also Peeves ! Beans we’re money !
and about a Harry Potter RPG, check the Gamebuy COLOUR (not advance !!!!) version of Chamber of Secrets, Great Japanese RPG gameplay elements fused with an insane amount of freedom, allowing you to visit every stages, taking almost every stairs, going almost EVERYWHERE.
finishing the franchise on this Gears of War Ripoff is an insult. in fact, since the fourth game, the Harry Potter games sucks… even if 5 and 6 wanted to go back to the original formula, they fucked everything in some horrible gameplay mecanics, broken camera and a lack of content, and don’t forget to remove a good jump fuction so you can’t have some decent platformer moment.
THIS is however the worst… there’s nothing else to say, the review is just totally right.
The gameboy color Sorcerer’s Stone is a nice RPG too.
The first two harry potter games were very nice, i like them quite a bit. I also played the first Game Boy title and the quiddich world cup one, and those two were alright.
But these two last games look terrible…
D: He got so mad his spanish accent appeared. This IS a bad game.
Spanish? I thought he was Cuban.
LEGO Harry Potter in my opinion is the best game based off the franchise-although the LEGO video game in general are the best movie-licensed games in existence-despite being “for babies”. Seriously, check LEGO Harry Potter out though.
Well, at least you sped up that Disturbed song so it would finish quicker.
Played the Chamber of secrets on the game boy color played like a good old fashion RPG along with new spells mini games and lots exploration. wish i sill had it
I can safetly say that the earlier Harry Potter games are WAY better then these two craptastic movie license games.
My personal favorite is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, which feature an epic final boss fight against the basilisk.
Speaking of movie license games, did you know that there is actually a Predator license game available on the PS2 and the original X-box called Predator: Concrete Jungle.
And here’s a surprise, its not based off of any of the movies and has its own story about a disgraced Predator who must regain his honor along with his clan’s honor after a hunt during the 1930′s in a city called New Way City ended badly with that the Predator tried to kill himself by activating his ship’s self destruct system, but he survived and he was dishonored and banished for a 100 years on a planet full of fierce alien creatures.
It has to be one of the best license games I ever played since it actually stays true to its source material even though the camera and controls can be a bit crazy at times.
And it wouldn’t be a Predator game without some spine and head ripping along with people getting teared apart from the middle.
I played only first two games, and by the sound of it they were far supperior games to these two. They weren’t worth any superlatives, but bus the sound of it were still much better that this. There were mostly platformers with [b] some [/b] spell casting, with quidditch sections and movre variety.
I agree there.
First two games were the best.
Order of the Phoenix and the Half-Blood Prince are my favorite Potter games because running around in Hogwart’s was just plain awesome.
I remember playing the video games to the first 2 movies which was rather good but after that i lost the interest in the games because i played the 3. game. I wasnt as bad as this but it was good either.
Very entertaining stuff Joe. Been watching you for ages but just now signed up for the site, mainly because I wanted to say I enjoyed seeing video clips from Pogo’s “Alohomora” track during your monologue.
For sure! I had to feature his work, song was stuck in my head for weeks.
okay, i was wrong. this look like an awful game.
