Ladies and gentlemen, there are murmurings on the internet. Only a short while ago, Terraria, also known as “Terraria: Shut up and Dig Gaiden!”, a game that seemingly came out of nowhere, has begun its imperial march upon Steam. In a little over a week, this independent title has seen an obscene amount of traffic that have now dwarfed both The Witcher 2 and Portal 2 in its opening week. Re-Logic, the developer of the sandbox PC title, could not begin to imagine the reception that awaited this Castlevania version of Minecraft. But then again, how could adding game play elements to the underlying sandbox design of the monolith title that has defined user game design over the last few years?
Actually, it does its job great.
| PROS | Well-crafted 2D sandbox, Great Soundtrack, Character centric rather than world centric |
| CONS | High starting difficulty, Soundtrack is very limited/repetitive, Bare bones tutorial |
| WTF?! | The Eye of Cthulhu? |
Much like Minecraft’s story, there isn’t much of one. The character that you create is dropped into a randomly generated world of your choice in size (small, medium, large). You are given a mining pick, an axe, and a NPC guide to help you with creating your first home, as well as tips about mining and how you can coax other NPC’s to move into outlying homes, This may sound like a boon having so much information at your fingertips, but eventually you will find that the world works against you in such an unforgiving manner.
Security in your home is a key to survival, as there is a never-ending spawn of monsters that assail players from the get go. Both the slimes above ground during the day, and zombies with floating eye pets during the night require you to have a base of operations in the early game, so that you can have a secure holding to bunker down and dig into, while the undead roam the night. While zombies are not the smartest creatures in the realm of fantasy, they can quickly overpower you if you don’t have your back to a wall.
The true enemies of Terraria lay in the caverns and holes of the world, housing beefier slimes, more versions of undead, and unknown terrors that lay at the bedrock of the world, waiting for those who dare to invade. What’s more is that there are random events during playtime that change the behaviour and pattern of the monsters. Every time the sun sets, there is a slight chance that the blood moon will rise, doubling the monster spawn rate and increasing their intelligence to open doors into buildings, and every time the sun rises, there risks the small chance that a Goblin Army will invade your abodes in an attempt to kill every NPC and PC in sight and loot everything that isn’t placed or secured in a treasure chest.
If you heard from someone that Terraria’s game play was similar to a “Metroidvania” title, they would be about half right. While the game play is very much like a side-scroller adventure, you are the one who has to master the crafting system to gain superior tiers of armor, weapons, and tools to continue the adventure downwards. There are treasure chests full of loot, health power ups, spells, and other useful stuff in the deeps of the earth, while mana is acquired by venturing out into the night to collect falling stars. Like I said before, there really isn’t an overlying story to the game. Much like Minecraft, you have to make your own.

One of the most popular games of 2011 is coming to PS3 and Xbox 360.
Two mining picks walk into a bar. They both say “OW. That freaking hurts!” Anyways, Terraria is an awesome, affordable 2D sandbox game for the PC. So maybe you should click the link and read on!

Kind of on the edge of getting this, considering i already have Minecraft, love it, and think it is one of the best games ever. Terraria looks really challenging, especially considering i dont have any friends who will play this with me. So i dont think im going to get this.
Terraria is awesome, i have had it since the day it came out. i just love the boss mode in this game and hope they will come with more, i have beaten the bosses several times.. even killed skeletron solo, all you need is a phase saber, healing, bow with evil arrows.. and some shurikens works well..
There are a few cons and 1 of them is that its waaay too easy to find life up power up, it could be that i just have increadable luck by finding them.. but i have gotten max hp on me and 2 of my friends alone.
If your new to terraria there is 1 thing you should do when you can..
1. build a huge house you can stand on the roof of.
2. get teleport mirror + cloud in a bottle
3.make BAIT!
4. Summon the worm boss
You can use the mirror and teleport back to the base and the boss WILL follow you.. if you have friends there you get on the top of your base’s roof aim straight up and spam shurikens like no tomorrow. you will allways get an armor piece by beating it and alot of demonite ores for armors and such and it will help you greatly. and you can do this as many times as you want.
Love this game, man, the feel is so much fun, though you will have to consult the wiki at one point or another, there’s quite a bit of confusing stuff in this game. I still don’t know how to enter the dungeon, every time I do a giant Skeletron head flies out and kills me instantly. I have no idea of what to do, so… TO THE WIKI!
bought it when it came out, i havent returned to minecraft yet XD
10 double- dollars? This game from planet Gun Smoke? jk
The game is definitely a good buy. Try and get the 4 pack if you can so you can play with friends like I did, it brings the good times rolling in. A must buy for anyone who enjoys Minecraft but wants a bigger focus around the RPG element more than the building element.
I really Agree with this review, This game does have A TON!!! of opportunities, I own the game I am looking forward to more updates (OH GAWD THANK YOU!FOR 1.03) Sure its a minecraft 2d copycat but who cares its still such a fun game, Oh don’t play this by yourself trust me you will hate it after 12 hours of game play, You will get bored with it, especially Blood Moons which send hordes of zombies at night and open your doors (Oh Shi-) so get it if you got friends who want it….
I love Terraria so much, it remind me a lot of G&G/Metroid in the way it plays, not only that but you could spend time just dicking about building things and mining. To people who call this a bad minecraft clone, this game is far from it, the creative aspect of the game while present, isn’t as developed (I can’t hook up a bunch of switches and stuff to make a rolloer-coaster/music box), the thrill of exploration is still present, also the combat in this game is actually REALLY good. If you want a creative sandbox with some dungeon crawler elements go for Minecraft, if you want a dungeon crawler with some elements of a creative sandbox go for terraria.
I managed to trigger double Eye bosses when I was playing.
Also I hope it’s easier to find the giant islands, I wouldn’t mind building into one.
I remember having MUCH trouble with the skeleton head, but after removing the roof, giving my armor and weapon an upgrade and doing a little hit-and-jump action, I finally brought it down. BEST. FEELING. EVER!
I like this game a lot. giving a point to minecraft other than, “do whatever the fuck you want”, was a good move. I also prefer it’s 2D over minecrafts 3D, as It’s much harder to get lost in a massive 2D world than a 3D one.
As for the future I think they should add some “end game” bosses. Of about the dificulty of skeletron, that you can summon repeatedly and they would drop the best loot types in the game (taking a page from dungeon crawlers and MMOs) also I think after you’ve beaten one of these bosses, the shops should also get better stuff.
Because as good as the game is once you get the “hell” gear, you’ve really beaten the game. and adding “end game” content would increase it’s longevity, at least for me.
They’ve already stated that they want to continue adding content, so I want them to add a bigger sky island biome. The ones placed on the map are just tiny islands compared to the rest of the world.
terraria, such an awesome game, I’ve had much fun with it, definitely worth the $10 spent.
you only spent 22 hours playing and defeated all 3 bosses? ive at least spent that and am just about to fight eater of worlds oO
It’s all in preparation. Making an arena above ground really helps with Devourer and the Eye, and hell gear along with a highway is vital to killing Skeletron, and when in doubt, bring friends. The bosses don’t scale to compensate for extra players.
“has begun its EMPIRICAL march”

this is what a true minecraft inspired game should be, something that takes a lot of ideas from minecraft but adds a unique spin on it and have some personality. Not like that damn FortressCraft,,
this game will provide epic lulz for everyone who plays, especially when you summon the eye of Cthulhu for the first time
