Still Playing: The Power Team Part 1, 5.2 out of 10 based on 6 ratings

Remember that one NES cartoon that sort of reminded you of Captain N, but had a bunch of Acclaim characters you’ve never heard of and has only one 30 second clip on YouTube? That’s The Power Team, and Lee has the full first episode!

Anyone else sick of the perky payday add? it takes up a 4th of the screen and reapears 15 seconds after clicking out of it. Its making some of these videos hard to watch.

Does anyone else notice that the background music in this show is stolen from Kidd Video? (Look it up on YouTube). The theme when we first see the bad guys is the “Master Blaster Fortress Theme,” the theme when the heroes are in the tomato truck and we are introduced to them is the “Copycats theme” and the theme when the missiles are flying is the theme that KV uses when things are getting tense.

Kidd Video is another weird cartoon, but it is weird in a GOOD way.

I remember The Power Team! Well, not really. I only know about these guys thanks to their appearance in a certain webcomic:

    http://www.captainsnes.com/2003/03/03/289-the-team-acclaimed-by-all/

Anyway, it’s awesome to finally get to see the show in all it’s cheesy glory.

I forgot about this until you made this video, but I really only remember season 2

Still the commercials were very nostalgic for me and brought back good memories and I am jealous you have the room on your desk to hit your bead against it. I would have myself if I had the room…maybe that is a good thing?

Wow, I actually remember this show. I don’t remember much about it, but I definitely watched it at some point. After seeing how bad this cartoon was, I’m not surprised that they changed the format for the next season. Anything would be a change for the better.

I can’t believe I’m going to say this, er, type this, but … give me Captain N over the Power Team any day! At least Mother Brain had better things to do than squash a truckload of innocent, tasty tomatoes.

I actually remembered Kwirk from his gameboy game. It was pretty decent, and the puzzles definitely could be difficult. Also to anyone saying that Acclaim wouldn’t include characters for games they only licenced/ported, Kwirk was made by Atlus and ported by Acclaim.

Oh yes, I remember this show! I used to watch this every morning before I went to school, I think I was in Jr. High. Anyway, I always thought of this show as the doppleganger of Captain N. Too bad they didn’t have more characters like they did in Captain N.
But I do kinda miss this cartoon.

I think I caught one episode of this fucking show back in the day and never heard from it again. In the ep the gang and the bad guys are chasing after the golden joystick that can control anything, and there’s some kinda power source that pops up randomly and the barbarian dude plugs his sword into it and shoots it at the bad guy.

I always remembered seeing it because it was the moment I realized there were way too many unnecessary toons.

Double Dragon was just distributed by Acclaim, it was owned by Technos. A Boy and His Blob was by Activision made by David “Pitfall” Crane himself. Some kids knew about Kuros, but even more knew about Bigfoot because it was the king of the monster trucks, and it was inescapable.

I love how 80s-early 90s the set of this show looks. Reminds me of the Carmen Sandiego gameshow & Kids Incorporated.

Merry Melodies goes on at the crack of dawn after Adult Swim ends on Cartoon Network; apparently it’s to racist/gay/violent for “today’s children.”

Actually CN has been showing them at other more normal times too, most notably right before The New Looney Tunes Show.

BTW, I know you’re a Double Fine fan, so what are your thoughts on their latest bunch of games (Costume Quest, Stacking)?

“Remember that one NES cartoon that sort of reminded you of Captain N, but had a bunch of Acclaim characters you’ve never heard of and has only one 30 second clip on YouTube?”

    - Yes, but only because I remember that CR did a Famailar Faces episode about it, since even he could only find that intro and 30 second clip you talked about. Dang so you out obscured footaged Chad Rocco. That’s like something I never thought I’d see. Bravo sir, bravo indeed.

And I have to say this was a really great commentary for this stupid stupid episode. I also like how you started with the commericals and being sad about how broadcast channels don’t play cartoons anymore (well I think CW4Kids still has cartoons Saturday Morning and… yeah that’s all I can think of. Though CN does have Looney Tunes on now and hey maybe we’ll be lucky and the Hub will air Tiny Toons again if they air older WB animated silver age 90′s shows) and then talked about the stupidity of the episode. Seriously the power team hides in a monster truck full of tomatoes? The villians hide behind bushes and put up cardcoard cutouts of cows? Jeez this IS making Captain N look dignifed even beyond the fact that show at least stared famous Video Game characters. While this one had a tomato, a basketball star, Fabio, a monster truck and a guy from N.A.R.C. Cause yeah that’s a famous team. I also liked the ending teasing what will happen as well as if there will be Still Gaming Season 4. Heh delay that anymore and I’ll be calling you the Naruto Abridged Movie of Blistered Thumbs, which is the Youtube abridged equilvemnt of Duke Nukem Forever to video games or was until last week anyway.

Oh my god, it is real! I didn’t hallucinate it, after all!

I remember watching this show a lot at summer camp one year. Yea, even then I knew it was a poor man’s Captain N. I too remember the game show much better, as the maze at the end where the kid grabs all the NES games he can carry was the coolest thing ever.

But since then, no one else I’ve mentioned this show to has remembered it, and as the video says, clips of it are hard to come by. Same with that old GamePro TV show from around the same time that aired on the same station in my area.

I’d always wondered if they ditched the Power Team segment because that group of christian body builders sued them.

They once came to my middle school to convince us all to worship Jesus and then proceeded to rip a phone book in half. I couldn’t tell if it was a request or a threat.

I doubt they even heard about this show. Bohbot had some deal with Acclaim during season one where they would push those particular games (although I recall the live-action tip segments looked at games from other companies as well). For season two (the game show season) they were pretty much on their own.

You know they never explained how these characters were zapped into the real world or how Mr. Big got a hold of their particular game paks and was able to zap them back to their game worlds. Yes, this was a running plot, and somehow the Bigfoot pak turned a real-world monster truck into a living truck like Bigfoot.

Yes, I know this show very well. I was just old enough to be able to have a strong memory of this series.

Funny how Bigfoot was in the show when it’s not really a game character to begin with.

Acclaim had a Bigfoot game for the NES, although I bet licensing the truck for the cartoon was a bonus expense. I blame this show for my buying Ironsword, and I never liked that game.
