Well, it’s certainly been a long time coming, friends, but after many, MANY years of patient (and not so patient) waiting, Nintendo is finally releasing Final Fantasy VI on the US Virtual Console this week. Of course, to keep it consistent for us here in the the states, they were kind enough to keep its original release title, Final Fantasy III when it goes up for download.
But who cares about what they call it? The US Virtual Console is finally getting one of (and arguably THE) best RPGs ever released for the Super Nintendo. As stated, the game is set to launch this week and will set buyers back a simple 800 Wii points.
Along with this, the DS eShop will also be receiving some nice new goodies as well. Kirby’s Dream Land will be landing in the shop the same time as Final Fantasy III, as well as a new DSiware game, The Lost Town.
So start saving up those points, because it looks like the Wii isn’t going to retire quietly, and the DS eShop seems to be picking up steam. Here’s hoping for some more neglected classics hitting our shores sometime in the near future!

Welp, I’m gonna get this on VC, as soon as I find my head…I just exploded with excitement.
Huh. Okay, good to know I’ll be able to finally pick up this game and give it a try, but why on earth are they using the defunct alternate numbering system? That’s not “keeping it consistent,” it’s just pointlessly confusing since Square has long since abandoned using an alternate numbering system for NA Final Fantasy games. Especially given there have already been two remakes (on the PS1 and GBA) of FF6 that used the proper name in NA, and there was a recent remake of the actual Final Fantasy 3 on the DS that was released in NA.
Huh, I thought the Virtual Console was dead in the water. Good to see it’s not, of course.
I swear that VI has been on PSN for ages o_6
I’m playing this right now.
This was the game that made me jealous of SNES owners back in 8th grade
Oh good, something to perpetuate the general population being asshats about the name.
This sounds awesome, but I don’t know whether I should get this or wait for the PSN version.
The PSN version will be the PS1 port of the SNES game. PS1 version had bad framerate and loading issues.
Sadly a CD can never be as fast as a cartridge. The issues were generally the result of the PS1 version being.. well.. the PS1 version. Loading times and the like would likely be eliminated since the game will be directly on the hard drive of a far superior (technically) system. Of course I’m only speculating and I’m one of those packrats that still has my SNES carts of every game I cared about from the way back when.
My favorite game of all time. Every RPG fan should play through this at least once.
