LittleBigPlanet 2 Review

Given just how well the original LittleBigPlanet sold, a sequel was all but inevitable. That being said, it was hard to imagine how they could expand upon the concepts laid out and justify creating another game. Thanks to the exponential increase in just what players can do when creating their own levels and the inclusion of a story mode that’s even more over the top than its predecessor, the sequel improves upon just about everything from the original title and offers up some game-changing concepts that make it feel like a sequel worthy of the LittleBigPlanet name.
| PROS | Tons of great user-created content and a satisfying story mode. |
| CONS | The amount of content is a bit overwhelming at times. |
| WTF?! | So much copyright infringement. |
Just like in the first game, the story mode of LBP2 is used as a means to dole out objects to use in the creation mode and give you an idea of just what kinds of levels you can create. Because the first game didn’t offer tools that enabled you to create anything more than platforming and adventure levels, the story mode consisted of nothing but those. Due to the more diverse palate of genres that you can toy around with in the game’s creation mode, the story mode is all over the map in terms of what kinds of things you’ll do this time around.
The story itself is far from amazing, but it’s a humorous take on the age-old battle of good versus evil. It’s essentially a tale about a group of characters looking to take down a mutual enemy known as the Negativitron. You play the role of the savior as you traverse through each of their habitats while simultaneously fixing the damage that’s been done and pursuing the Negativitron. Although it felt a little bit longer than the story mode in the original game, it still felt like it ended just a bit too soon. There’s plenty of replay value that stems from the necessity to play through most levels multiple times in order to find all of the items, but it would have been nice to see a more fleshed-out experience.

The ability to dress up Sackboy in ridiculous costumes is back in full force.
The arts-and-crafts aesthetic of the original is back in all its glory, albeit with slightly better-looking textures and assets. It’s one of the signature aspects of the games, and Media Molecule clearly took the time to ensure that it made the transition to the sequel. Some user levels – particularly the retro-inspired ones – take on a totally different appearance than the more conventional platforming ones, but the graphics still never fail to impress.
With over 3.5 million user-created levels currently out there, the concept of really digging in and trying some out is pretty intimidating. Thankfully, there’s a system in place that makes the highest-voted levels the easiest to access. There’s still a ton to sift through, and countless great creations that many of us will probably never get around to playing, but there is at least some form of method to the madness. This portion makes up a significant chunk of what the game has to offer, and the community is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. As people grow more accustomed to the tool set offered, the better the creations offered will become.

This reminds me of another game. It's right on the tip of my tongue….
A portion of the levels available online are from the first game, which means people new to the series won’t miss out on anything. One inevitability that stems from these levels making the transition to LBP2 is that the controls and signature floaty physics made the transition as well. This includes the jump from the first that often felt just a little shy of being high enough to make it over some of the taller ledges. It’s a really minor issue, but it tends to make a few levels feel difficult for all of the wrong reasons. That aside, the controls work well across all mediums. Be it a space shooter, a racing level, or just a classic left-to-right platforming romp, everything works great.

Hold on to your sackboys! We bought a PS3 in anticipation for the release of this super-hyped exclusive title!
