Brink

Players: 1 Player Offline, 8 Online Players
Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
Genres: First-person Shooter
Release Date: May 10, 2011
Developer: Splash Damage
MSRP: $59.99
Platforms:
In Brink, two factions, "Resistance" and "Security", fight in the previously utopian city known as The Ark, a floating city surrounded by the waters of a flooded Earth.[1] The Ark was designed as a prototype of a perfect city, with renewable resources and no pollution, large enough to support 5,000 residents. However, due to many refugees entering the city from other parts of the world, its population has grown to over 50,000, meaning there are not enough resources to go around - resulting in the city being on the brink (hence the name of the game) of a civil war.

Out soon, but first some maths!

With only a while left to go until release, Splash Damage release some interesting figures. Advertised as a custom heavy game, by which I mean players have the ability to modify almost every aspect of their character and weapons, the developer obviously wanted to show off just how much work they have done. So before you join the resistance, nor indeed fight back under the wing of ‘The Ark’s’ security teams, check out these impressive figures.

Stats:

Number of Voice packs: 8

Number of Ways to Die: 45

Minutes of Music: 60

Individual weapons sounds: 4,500

Weapons/attachment combinations (not including Resistance variations or Pre-order content): 4963

Lines of Dialogue: 26,000

Unique Security Characters (including minor tint variations, but not body type): 15,775,119,360,000,000

Unique Resistance Characters (including minor variations AND body type): 54,922,323,456,000,000

Total Unique Characters (includes all): 102,247,681,536,000,000

Impressive, I’m sure you’ll agree. For character customisation that’s over 100 quadrillion! How much of a difference these minor variations make is yet to be seen, however it’s pretty obvious that players will find it easy to stand out from the crowd in Brink. There is something lurking at the back of my mind, causing me to become concerned about all these statistics though. I remember a game called APB that built itself on customisation…

Despite the overwhelming amount of negative reviews, Daniel decides to give Brink a shot. But is it worth your money in its current state?
