Finally a FPS that feels fresh & brings something new to the table ! Brink will surely keep me away from all those Killzone, Halo Reach & Call of Duty games !
Can Brink’s Parkour Gameplay rise above the game’s noticeable faults? Angry Joe has the final

With only a while left to go until release, Splash Damage release some interesting figures.
In case you were wondering, you can set dudes on fire in Brink.

A pinball winter wonderland , the return of the Ludum Dare, and the beauty of The Desolate Hope are just some of what awaits you in this week’s edition of your best source (that’s our story and we’re sticking to it) for free gaming on the net.
nice review, i agree with every thing that was said
It’s a Bethesda game, it’s expected to have bugs in the first few weeks.
I might pick it up 2 or 3 months down the line. Lets see what support this game gets.
The biggest thing this game needs is support from Splash Damage. They need to patch the game, as well as provide DLC in the form of not only maps, but weapon, class and character unlocks. I feel that they should not even think of making a Brink 2, but work with this game, and support it as it may just fall under the cracks. It has great concepts, and the game in its current state is no where near its full potential. This game NEEDS support.
Wow. i posted 2 comments and both got 15 thumbs downs. people just dont know good game. :p Let the hate mail ensue.
I think it’s because one of those claims that lag, branded AI and popping textures somehow only occur if you are a terrible player. I’ll keep in mind that the next time a game crashes on me, it’s inherently my fault.
or may be you just have low standards
Looks like it is time to Don the chicken suit and fill my shoes with powdered chalk and do the patch dance.
to bad i was actually exited by this game
good idea but bad execution
Great review as always Zeitgeist, if I could make a request for a review, (if you’re not allowed to, disregard this.) But there’s a game coming out on Steam this Monday called Terraria and I think this kind of game might be up your alley.
I would really like to hear what you think of this game, as I think this game needs some honest opinions, since you obviously have no bias in your reviews.
Hope you accept my request. Thank you. =)
P.S. To anyone who would also like to see a Terraria review, please comment, because I hope I’m not the only person.
my opinion on this game: it’s great
really, i’ve never had a experience like it in gaming (though i’d love to hear about games that try simerler things, that being the shared multiplayer/single player thing)
i went into the game with no expectations and expecting some fun running and shooting gameplay, yes the fact that you can count the number of missions for each faction on two hands is kind of a let down, and the fact the levels are just linear progression instead of being more mazelike is dissapointing, but the pakour works, if it isn’t a little bit glitchy from a first person perspective and the shooting and health system are great and familier.
the health system though is a bit more alien, it’s really a hybrid of tf2 style health and traditional fps recharging health ((what with there being diffrent health sizes depending on body type and also having medics who can buff health))
really, to me, most criticism i’ve seen on this game have been people reviewing what they got against what they thought they’d get instead of reviewing what they got, infact, this video is probly the fairest review of brink i’ve seen so far
brink cought fable flu, people paid too much attention to dev promises and cycles and didn’t just wait patiently for it, so they mostly got dissapointed, i get it, if you promise me the moon and i wait a year for it and then you give me a wedge of cheese and i was really excited for the moon i’d be pissed, but that really doesn’t justify saying that the cheese is a horrible game
er…i think that analogy fell apart there
edit: thought i’d just mention i got the PC version and havn’t experienced many problems with it so far, havn’t gone online yet, but i do see some of the problems with the friendly AI, the enemy AI seems a bit brutal on the other hand.
Oh and btw. I didnt have a single problem u mentioned. No lag, no texture poping, no brainded ai. You sure u just dont suck? Great game. dont listen to the media.
People are just hatin on it because it not CoD. This game fuckin rules. People just Set the bar way too high. 9/10 for me.
Too bad. It seemed like it might be an okay game during the early buzz. I think I’d be willing to check it out via a Steam sale. But only if the glitches were patched out as you alluded to in the review. I hope they do only because it could be a viable alternative to some of the other games out there. I liked how they implemented the James Bond style jumping/covering/ducking out stuff during firefights. I think the class that can sabotage enemy weapons, and installations was a pretty cool idea. So it does seem to have some cool stuff. But I don’t know if that will be enough to tear people away from other shooters, especially with that level of bugginess.
Nice review though. One of the better ones I’ve seen lately in general.
As I said on the youtube (Necromancer1230) I wasn’t expecting gold, and I got bronze, which sits fine with me. I would definitely give it a trial just to see how it performs, overall the main issues you have are bad net coding (Not a unique problem & Patchable) and the art-style (which I have to agree won’t win any awards for prettiest character designs), both of which I don’t find to be deal-breakers.
Everyone saying Brink is a bad game are wrong.
I hated it the first 4 hours I played it. But sit through it, level up find a playstyle that suits you and it get 80% more fun.
Playing a way that suits YOU is exactly what its made for.
Yes its story isn’t great and its not really meant for that. I usually care for story the most in games, but in this game I don’t really care if it isn’t good. It’s a solid multiplayer. People should open their eyes and see that CoD is nothing but a cheap cash-in product, pick up Brink.
Unlocking abilities takes time but it will gradually get more fun with each new ability you unlock, and if people can spend days leveling up in Bad Company 2, they can in this too. You can practicly go from level 1 to level 3 in one match.
What many have done is just play for 30 minutes and give up cause the miss claymores. Have patience and maybe try challenge mode too.
I started out hating this game, and I’ve rated it 3 times. First 6.0/10 then 7.1/10 and now 9.4/10.
I only have 2 problems with it now. 1) When a group of 3 medics constantly revive each other faster than 3 people can gun ‘em down. 2) Why all the accents??? I don’t get it! It’s like 2 of 10 have normal american accent. For some weird reason that’s frustrating.
Logic fail with your opening sentences:
Any reviewer that dislikes the game would find a way to justify a score of 4 or less. 80% more than a score of 4 is ~5. So the mixed reviews still seem on par with me :p
Did you pay any attention to the story? The characters are meant to be from all over the world.
Personally I love brink. I love the gameplay, the fresh feel to it, the graphics (mostly the surreal style that the characters have), the coversations in the cutscenes, and generally the unlocks.
Dispite my love for the game, you gave an honest and good review. I disagree with certain bits, but some are just things that could be due to console porting (graphics havn’t bothered me, and I have heard no such sound glitches but I own it for the PS3). I havn’t been able to go online yet, and I’m also dissapointed in the maps, but I still enjoy the game in the end. I just wish it were 50, or $40 due to only 8 maps.
Amazing, a comment that disagrees with the article in a respectful manner. I thought those were just a myth.
I really like the idea of mission-based Multiplayer, there doesn’t seem to be enough competitive games that do that. It would be a welcome diversion from very basic game modes like team deathmatch of capture the flag. And the parkour looks pretty awesome too, I remember getting frustated from time to time with the controls on Mirror’s Edge. Too bad about the technical problems.
Its always disappointing when a cool concept gets ruined by bad execution. I really want to see a developer pull this off successfully so that it adds some innovative features to the market, switching things up a bit.
You might want to try out either Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory or Quake Wars: Enemy Territory, both made by Splash Damage who did Brink here. For whatever reason these older games pull off, well, everything much better than Brink does (and Wolf:ET is freeware).
I haven’t had any trouble with the game on PC except one level has no audio. A big patch is supposed to come out this weekend that should fix the performance issues some are having. Personally I love this game.
What a tough call, I am very much on the fence with this one. The game seems to have some pretty damned innovative features and I really want to support that. But at the same time, I can’t condone the half-assing of the singleplayer or the premature release. Seems to me, developer Splash Damage had a real shot to make a name for themselves with this title but sadly dropped the ball. What a shame. So much wasted potential… sadness
What a shame. I thought there was going to be an actual single player experience, but it looks like it was tacked on. I’m not one for multiplayer games, but this does look interesting. But on the bright side, Brink is going to get patched soon.
I think I’ll stick to tf2, even if this becomes a masterpiece, games that release early and just say “Oh we can fix it later.” and handwave the problems always leave a bad taste in my mouth.
That’s Bethesda in a nutshell, sadly…
This is the same crap that happened with the New vegas release. They didn’t give it enough time to fix the BIG game breaking glitches before release and you had to wait a week for a patch to fix it.
Because Bethesda totally made New Vegas. It wasn’t made by Obsidian Entertainment, who always get handed sequels that seem cool but are clearly unfinished products, and when they do make their own game and delay it again and again, it’s still unfinished.
Man, i am getting so fucking sick of these half-asked games. I was really looking forward to Brink, too.
Have you played the game if yes, you may have an opinion. If no then shut up and give it a try. We still don’t know what the ps3 version was like, and he did not even mention the PC version. TF2 has had its faults and has been patched continuously. This is the fate of console games and PC games. Release broken games then patch them first day. For the most part, I have not run into too much lag issues. As most reviewers point out, it is usually like 1 in 5 games you get screwed on for lag. The AI doesn’t actually get good until 3-5 minute timer goes down. That’s when they stop fucking around and go for the objective. I don’t know why they are programmed that way, they just are.
This is one of the first FPSs I’ve played in a long time to really encourage teamwork. Even when you lose objectives, you and your comrades as a team can work to fight back what little you can save, which I find very cool. With most games you can’t do that. To me this Splash Damage’s vision of what they wanted when they first made Enemy Territory. This is their big goal to really emphasize how fun team work can be.
