Hideous creatures descend on Manhattan. The only means of fighting them off is a new science called the Overdive system, but only one viable candidate exists -- Aya Brea. Fend off new enemies called the Twisted in this 3rd person shooter.

After over 10 years since Parasite Eve 2, the series has reemerged in the form of The 3rd Birthday. Forgoing any elements that popularized the series in the PS1 days, this title misses the mark more times than I can count. I tend to look on the brighter side of things when it comes to reviewing games, but this is far and away the worst game I’ve ever reviewed during my time at Blistered Thumbs. What makes this game so disappointing and awful? Let’s dig in and find out.

PROS For a PSP game, this looks amazing. The Overdive mechanic is also quite fun.
CONS Confusing as hell story, poor level design, repetitive gameplay, and almost no connection to the other games in the series.
WTF?! SO. MUCH. FAN SERVICE.

The plot in this game deals with quite a few complicated elements, including time travel, the human soul, and alternate realities. The story had the potential to be pretty epic, however these elements are handled very sloppily. The main plot device is a new science called Overdive, which allows the user to travel back in time. Aya Brea uses this in order to defeat a new species wreaking havoc on New York called the Twisted. This is where the confusion begins.

Hey buddy, Billy Idol Called. He wants his suit back.

Aya Brea is the main character, but outside of a reason to make a new game, the story never really explains why. The Twisted don’t have anything to do with other creatures she’s encountered before, from what I gather. The reason for the Twisted even existing is so ridiculous you’ll do a double take wondering if what you just heard was true. You’re also lead to believe that the Overdive works one way, then the game decides to change its mind without explaining. You’re left so befuddled that at one point you just choose to accept confusion as inevitable.

Maybe the biggest sin of the game is how it has almost nothing to do with the other two Parasite Eve games. Outside of the inclusion of Aya and Dr. Maeda (the Japanese scientist), this could almost be an entirely different game. The other titles in the series had survival horror elements that made for some psychologically thrilling gameplay. The 3rd Birthday just seems like another dumb shooter with the PE name slapped on. I’m sorry to say, but if you’re a fan of the series, then you’ll be disappointed.

The gameplay doesn’t help matters much either. 3rd Birthday looks to try and appeal to a wider audience with it’s third-person shooter gameplay. Each level throws you into a series of corridors in frantic run-and-gun action. It’s actually quite fun to start off as it’s easy to shoot enemies with the lock-on mechanic. Trying out new guns makes things a little interesting as you buy and level them up. However, the game never really changes things up and gets boring really fast.

get used to killing these monsters. You’ll see them the whole game.

For the most part, each of the six levels have you running from room to room gunning down waves of monsters. You clear a room and move on to the next. The overall design is so lazy and boring. You’ll also be fighting the same enemies throughout the whole game. There are only about a dozen or so different types in total, not counting bosses. Speaking of bosses, they’re a joke. Half of them you have to fight twice in a row, no doubt in attempts to pad the play time. Considering the game has no extras or multiplayer, this is a rather cheap way to add gameplay time.

There are, however, a few things that the game does to mix things up a bit. In a few battles you take control of vehicles that are, admittedly, quite amusing. You can also customize your weapons and Aya’s DNA to give added stat boosts in battle. These two elements are rather shallow though, and you’ll most likely not spend a significant amount of time maximizing them. You also have a gauge that progressively builds up that, when used, gives Aya super-human abilities that allow her to move and shoot much faster. Of all the game’s short-comings, the Overdive mechanic does make for a bit of fun in battle.

Ditto, axlryder. I’m disappointed, too, but I’m not making poor potty puns. Oh, and I actually have played the game.

On the brighter side, 3rd Birthday is bringing the older Parasite Eve games to PSN and gave me a code for Lightning to Cosplay as Aya in Dissidia. Nice asides, really.

That said, I hardly think that we can say SE has crapped their pants. FF XIII’s only major flaw was uninspired level design choices, FF XIV was undoubtedly rushed, and, to be honest, a reboot like 3rd Birthday was always a long-shot to do right. That, and SE improved Dissidia…well, to be more correct, they didn’t break Dissidia by tweaking it….

Well, all things considered I’m really not surprised.

Or should I say I wasn’t surprised, seeing how I bought the thing. 3rd Birthday unmistakably had potential, but poor writing and skimpy clothing make for good porno, not good games. For the record, I like the game well enough, but I understand that my tastes are somewhere out in the left-field bleachers, seeing how I actively like that black sheep that is called FFXIII….

All I can say is that, as soon as I got out of the tutorial, I went to the hub and read the background file on Aya. Something akin to “Blood blooming on her wedding dress” was on a file listed as an official record. That there is D- writing that most fan-fiction authors would be ashamed of; NO REPUTABLE AGENCY ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH WOULD WRITE AN OFFICIAL DOCUMENT THAT WAY. The hack of a writer copy-and-pasted text from a brainstorming session onto the game’s text.

Now, in its defense, the gameplay is quite smooth and enjoyable–although there is far far FAR too much ammo for survival horror–and the twisted are some of the most memorable enemies I’ve played in recent memory. That said, in the past fighting games have been the brainless and RPGs tell the stories, and this time we see Duodecim come up with a surprisingly bittersweet–albeit far too short–story while 3rd Birthday degenerates into mindless fanservice.

Once again, I like the game well enough and don’t regret buying it. But it shouldn’t have been like this. 5 is a touch harsh, but the game is unmistakably, irrevocably, unforgivably average.

I have this game on it’s way from Amazon and it honestly looks really fun. I may be wrong, but I’ve already bought it.

About the story, they’re trying to not alienate any gamers who want to play this new game, but don’t have the resources to play the first two games.

Also, if you look at the top of the page, it says that HexaDrive developed the game. Square only published it. So, either Blistered Thumbs needs to get their information right or everyone needs to stop bitching and moaning about how it’s all Square’s fault. Okay?

He’s everything what’s wrong with Square today. He create that shitty FFX-2 which drives spoony fucking insane, he create the fucking FF13 which story suck, not to mention he’s also a sexist. He also manage to destroy Frontline: Mission Evolve(another square enix game.)
He needs stop and fired before parasite eve gone batshit insane.

BTW I recommand Spoonyone rant on this Toriyama Motomu guy if he wants to make a FFX-2 review series, that would be hilarious lol.

Also how is it that it’s Toriyamas fault that Front Mission Evolved failed? If your going to blame it on anyone blame the one who chose DoubleHelix (G.I Joe) to make their game.

Yeah the Spoony worship is stupid but those two games suck all on their own regardless of what a certain internet personality thinks and I’m one of those sick people that actually enjoys X-2 on a certain level.

Also, the people defending SE saying they only published it, really? Square own’s the rights to the Parasite Eve title, they happily slapped it on a crap game cause it had some name recognition. Their sin is just as bad, if not worse, than Hexadrive. So yes, if their label is on it, its just another shit game brought to us by Square Enix.

I can explain a little more on why this game’s story is absolutely terrible. You see the original Parasite Eve for the PS1 was the sequel to a book also called Parasite Eve by Hideki Sena (I hope that is right) and the second also followed up on both the book and game. Well after 11 years Square Enix lost all rights to make any games that had anything to do with the Parasite Eve novel hence the reason this game is called The 3rd Birthday and not Parasite Eve 3. So in order to make this game they had to forgo any aspects having to do with the previous games and novel they were based on hence why the enemies are called the Twisted instead of being mitochondrial monsters and other such things however Square did manage to hang on to the name and character likeness of Aya Brea and that is pretty much it the rest is pretty much this

It is true that Parasite Eve does draw from the book of the same name… However, it actually draws more from the film that was based off the book than the book iteslf…. and yes, Square did take liberties in the story for the first game.

I was going to mention the Mindjack thing myself until Ceadda1220 did. It kinda pisses me off when someone blames a publisher for a game. Square-Enix is a huge company that owns several developers, hell even the in-house team is huge enough that there could possibly be zero crossover between the people who made FFXIII, 3rd Birthday, and FFXIV. I haven’t played this game, though, so I can’t judge it, but I didn’t think Famitsu would lie to us considering they have been a good judge in the past. Regardless I wasn’t gonna buy this game anyway, I’ll leave it up to my brother to decide.

I really hope you made the same typo several times throughout this review… I won’t deny your opinions on the game itself throughout, to each there own, but, The Third Birthday has tons of extra’s.

Achievement style feats for every mission
The obligatory music player and video player
several secret guns and special costumes rewarded for difficulty, feat completion, or number of completions
several cheat codes (many of which that actually make the game HARDER, for those who like a challenge) also rewarded for difficulty, feat completion, or number of completions

If you truly believe there are no extra’s in TTB, then i sincerely hope you brought enough pot to share with the class.

PS. Aya’s cloth’s deteriorate during battle as you get hit, showing battle damage. As your cloths deteriorate, the protection they provide go’s down. This is the reason behind the visible damage to your costume.

It’s amazing how both different and similar the reviews are on IGN and Gametrailers. Both reviews name the same weaknesses of The 3rd Birthday, but while GT rips the game a new asshole, the IGN reviewer just shrugs and dismisses the weaknesses. For example, the IGN reviewer said that the English dialogue is a “straight interpretation of the Japanese”; the GT reviewer said it is “cringe-worthy.”

    IGN score: 8.5 [GREAT]

    Gametrailers score: 5.4 [POOR]

Sorry if this comment seems like a blog, but I couldn’t help but get the feeling that IGN is biased (I know, big news, right?). Let’s just hope that Taylor here won’t succumb to the temptation of tens of millions of dollars and vacation packages in exchange for positive reviews for shitty games!!!

Actually, Taylor, wouldn’t the GT review be too negative based on your assessment of the game? 7-7.5 being average is the general standard in reviewing games, so wouldn’t that make the IGN reviewer too positive and the GT reviewer too negative? After all, GT basically said the game sucks and is worthless (or at least, that’s what most gamers think when they see a 5 in a review).

Yeah, you’re gonna find that ALL publications and sites are biased depending on the games. GT gave Kain and lynch 2 an 84/100 but gave sonic colors a 64/100. Every time I’ve looked up one of their reviews I’ve seen them review quirky jrpgs like the stuff NIS puts out as poor, regardless of quality, and laud over every FPS that falls into their hands. I’ll never listen to another GT review again, but that’s simply because I’ve seen more of their bias firsthand. I’m sure other sites are equally bad, but I just haven’t noticed as much.

That sounds like a 5 that people shouldn’t buy. The 1-10 is the quality indicator, i.e. how well the game is made. The “Avoid it” “buy it now” etc is what you should do with your money.

you know, I’m sick of people hating on this game for fanservice, as if the first two didn’t do it, Aya always wore skimpy and revealing clothes in the previous games and she had a shower scene that you didn’t even need to unlock in the second one, so the fact that people are only going nuts over fanservice NOW is really ridiculous.

And you know what other thing about Parasite Eve games that was there in the first games too? THEY ALWAYS HAD CONFUSING STORYLINES!! You always had to play them 2-3 times to figure it out properly.

One thing I agree about is the repetitive gameplay and that fans of the series don’t need to buy the game, nor should people buy a PSP just to play it.

I’d add that since this is on the PSP, expect your fingers to break if you’re gonna play it, and it’s kinda short (7-10 hours only). Oh, and Maeda now sounds like a creepy molester, but I blame localization for that since he sounds much better in the Japanese Version.

All in all, this game gets a 7/10 from me.

        I don’t think so.

Games like MindJack and Final Fantasy XIV clearly indicate:
        They need help.
And so does Sheen for his…well, escapades.

For their own good, I really hope Deus Ex 3 won’t suck.

Actually, Sqaure-Enix didn’t develop Mindjack, they merely published it… as for FF XIV, i honestly couldn’t tell you since i haven’t played a final fantasy game in quite some time… unfortunately in this day and age, rampant fanboyish expectations on games in a series dilute the ability of the developer to branch out… Sure, Square-Enix has some offal titles under its belt like ‘The Bouncer’ and ‘Ehrgeiz’, but we tend to look at these ‘crap games’ with more scrutiny than a good unknown title like ‘Einhander’ or ‘Threads of Fate’…

Aww man, I love me some threads of fate. If their was ever I game I’d want to see an out of left field sequel for, that would be it. Actually, square put out so much good shit in the 90′s it’s crazy. So did Enix for that matter. WHAT CHANGED!?

That makes no sense. The Bouncer and Ehrgeiz were just as obscure as Einhander and Threads of Fate. Good games get put under the microscope just as much as bad ones, probably more so because there’s people desperately looking for flaws. Look at how Final Fantasy 7 went from, according to the case cover, “…quite possibly the greatest game ever made” to everyone shitting on it for every last little thing that they can find?

Also, clearly fan expectations have not stopped Square Enix from branching out considering how drastically different one incarnation of a certain series was from the last. If anything, them branching out and working toward mass appeal has been the cause of their overall decline in quality since they need to farm out their IP to third party developers (3rd Birthday and FF14 just being the most recent examples) and they keep mashing together game elements in order to appeal to more “types” of gamer . Specialization and refinement are the keys to high quality product.

The 3rd Birthday Review

The 3rd Birthday Review

Okay?

Their score might have been a tad low, but I pretty much agree with everything they had to say about the game. When watching or reading reviews, I don’t just look at the final score, I actually like to read or listen to what they had to say about the game.

Bro, a 5/10 means average, not bad. You got that wrong.

Yeah, I thought BT uses a REAL point system. Like Flow said 5/10 is average.

“The overall package is very average. The production value is high; the cinematics and graphics look great. The game actually functions properly and there is a bit of fun to be had. For the most part though, the game is just boring, repetitive, and uninspired. I would have given it a lower score if it was a complete train wreck, but it wasn’t.”

That sounds like a 5 that people shouldn’t buy. The 1-10 is the quality indicator, i.e. how well the game is made. The “Avoid it” “buy it now” etc is what you should do with your money.

Taylor’s review reflects the score he gave it.

Ah, ok, got it. So you can give a 10/10 when it’s good quality but the price is … say 2000$ it’s still an “Avoid it”.

Precisely! Or the game could be really well made all around, but maybe it just isn’t fun to play.

you know, I’m sick of people hating on this game for fanservice, as if the first two didn’t do it, Aya always wore skimpy and revealing clothes in the previous games and she had a shower scene that you didn’t even need to unlock in the second one, so the fact that people are only going nuts over fanservice NOW is really ridiculous.

Well, I could buy a psp, buy this game, play it, beat it, beat it 50 more times and get a chance to see Aya naked in the shower, oooooor I could google.

    *googles*

just saved myself 140 bucks and 500 hours. Gotta admit though, I can see there was a lot of *cough* loving care that went into crafting that particular scene

The worst game you’ve ever reviewed and you still give it a 5/10?
    Woah…

But with games like this one it really doesn’t surprise me, why Square-Enix has become the Charlie Sheen of game puplishing lately.

Ouch. Comparing Square-Enix to Charlie Sheen. That’s a bit harsh on Charlie, don’t you think?
