Top 5 Reasons Shogun 2 Will Kick Ass!, 10.0 out of 10 based on 1 rating ![]()
It’s turn ten, and I’m completely surrounded by people who don’t like me. I get the impression that something really, REALLY bad is about to happen. Naturally, I pick up my laptop and calmly walk out of the church. Turns out they’re not tremendous fans of people who swear incessantly at their computers during sermons. My sudden relocation to a more friendly place to play doesn’t seem to make a difference though, as the Oda use their next opportunity to give me a close up view of the underside of their boot. It’s official: I love Total War: Shogun 2.
| PROS | Better Cutthroat AI, Atmosphere, Slicker Unit List, Multiplayer is Incredible. |
| CONS | Uninspired Naval Component, 2 player campaign, No DX11 support yet. |
| WTF?! | Stay out of the way of the matchlock Ashigaru. They will !@#& your !~%* up. |
The Total War series is where I go when I want to get my ass kicked. I know that sounds like an unusual desire, but some strategy games are made to help the player succeed. Mission by mission, you climb up the ladder and unlock new units each time you start a new one. No matter what though, that mission is the only one you have to beat before the game continues. Every other level you’ve completed is in the bag, finished, chalked up to your victories, you bought the T-shirt and worn it to singles mixers on the weekend to tell people “that’s right baby, made it to Dune 2′s FIFTH stage as the Ordos.”
Total War just isn’t like that. You’re always under pressure to lose it all. One poorly planned advance, one turn spent ignoring your army placements or your recruitment lists and it can all come tumbling down. The past few installments of Total War (Napoleon and Empire) had changed this around some, focusing more on a plot driven set of campaign missions. These were interesting directions to go in, and I wasn’t disappointed with either game, but it was a simpler task to roll through a map picking off territories bit by bit. Shogun 2′s campaign mode will plant you smack dab in the middle of the pair of shoes belonging to the daimyo of whichever clan you’ve picked.
As such, some clans have it a little rougher than others, and seeing as how disastrously my attempt at siding with a winner (the Tokugawa) ended in just ten simple presses of the enter button, I opt again for a clan down the south end of the island to slowly work my way up the spine, back to the wall strategy. Each clan has a specific reputation, giving you bonuses to units, build times, costs, etc. My new clan, the Shimazu are ‘Masters of Integrity,’ giving them reduced upkeep for samurai units, increased loyalty for generals, and the ability to hire on more skilled samurai hero units.
It starts a little smoother this time, with a military alliance to the Mori, cemented by a marriage between one of my sons and his daughter. Together, we take the south island without incident and look northwards. Well, I say without incident, but what I really mean is having to consistently put down a Christian rebellion in the Hyuga province, which happens at least three times during the course of my military advance on my Chosokabe rivals in the north.
I love the smell of springtime… smells like victory, after generous bribery and sabotage. Smells like… eggplant quiche.
Fans of the Total War series will rest easy, though this information may not be news, considering we mentioned it in our hands on preview of Shogun 2 last month; the AI has finally figured out how to use boats properly. The sneakier opponents are now bringing armies around the coast and dropping them in territory long thought secure from advancing forces. The AI will downright stab you in the eye if you don’t keep one of yours on them at all times. Negotiating peace and begging for mercy is likewise an uphill affair, even allowing you to present one of your children to your opponents as a hostage. In my experience, this didn’t work the one time I tried it, as per the first paragraph of this article.
What has also received a makeover is your military unit list. Other Total War games opted for some semblance of historical accuracy, keeping each factions units named specifically and getting specialized bonuses. While complete, in their total inclusion, it was a niggling criticism that the difference between the Prussian empire’s Bosniak unit and the Russian Gardes a Cheval were not immediately known. Choosing a new army to start with might require some decent amount of personal research into your new units to maximize your effectiveness. Shogun 2, while still sporting an impressive unit list, has taken a more universal approach and slimmed the armies down to more basic unit types: bowmen militia, spearmen militia, samurai bowmen, samurai spearmen, samurai swordsmen, etc. Each of these units usually have some kind of specialty, and definite vulnerabilities. Charging your light cavalry into a spear wall, wedge formation or not, is never a bright idea. What results is an easier means of army customization, and faster response time on the field to counter your opponent’s maneuvers.
Ah yes, the torture of waiting for everyone to complete their turns in multiplayer strategy games. We each had a book at the ready whenever I played Age of Empires: The Age of Kings with my bro. because both of us took so long to complete our turns.
I trust my bro. as an ally, even without alliances, because there were several games where we could only beat them as a team when we were kids. But if you don’t completely trust your partner then I would recommend using the unbreakable alliance mode. Or ignore any diplomatic actions by your partner after he breaks your alliance and ruthlessly destroy their empire as punishment.

Music Mondays revisits the band that brought us tunes from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Bit.Trip Runner.
MY EYES!!!! Joe, you in a Geisha outfit will haunt the nightmares of the masses…the Angry Joe Army has a WMD it seems.
Really? No one made this joke yet? Well, guess I might as well:
“THAT GEISHA’S A SPY!!”
Please, make a review of DragonAge 2 it would be nice to know your opinions to the sequel.
There’s one thing I wanna ask……
How many American can pronounce Shogun right?
Joe…… ASK JEW WARIO on how to pronounce Japanese words!!!
Shogun:
Shou – Goon
Ryu:
Ri+u not Rai-u
Manga:
Maan – Ga
I tried the Shogun 2 demo and didn’t like it. I was mostly annoyed with the look of the units in combat. They seem to be made of oil stained shiny plastic.
Looks like this game is going to be great! I like the visual style, and the traditional japanese culture set. I wish I had more free time to play this game, I’m super busy but I hope can check it out.
And Joe is always crowded by hot chicks. Wow, tell us your secret, Joe.
Valve added a Shogun Pack on Team Fortress 2 (items, hats) to motivate PC buyers to own Shogun 2 plus there is a full promotion on the Total War catalogue on Steam.
I hope this game will be stable on my computer, I love medieval Japan since I played Kessen years back on the PS2.
Joe, don’t listen to the haters, I think you make one fine drag queen!
Something about a man in a dress and wig just makes me smile, probably because it reminds me of my childhood (long story …)
Anyhoodle, thanks for improving my day! : )
I am never ever going to accept tea from a Geisha with a mustache again… ._.
“deleted”? :,(
Fixed!
Geisha Joe looks like Aphex Twin
Damm you! The image of Geisha Joe is following me to hell!
So, when are you going to review Dragon Age 2? You’ve already played through it right? I already played through it. Hey, when Joe? When? Hey Joe! Joe! Joeee!!
Sorry. The annoyance of those kids kind of rubbed on me… -_-
Bottom line, looking forward to your Dragon Age II review.
it was bad enough for spoony to dress as tidus….please dont dress up as a giesha again…
but yeah, im interested in shougun 2 and im not a big rts fan anyway.
ARGH I want this game! Actually, I gotta say I thought Empire: Total War was pretty good – maybe not as revolutionary as the other entries into the series (ARGH sieges still sucked) but certainly a lot of fun to throw down.
Also looking forward to World: Total War. WWI & II with SEGA’s total war engine? {Yes, Please!}
i’m sorry joe but i give up on total war it’s boring now, why bother playing this where i can be playing Dawn Of War 2 retribution
the clan mode look like it could KICK ASS! im gonna buy this one for sure
You look hilarious in that geisha uniform, Joe.
I liked the original Shogun but have lost interest in TBS games after playing Galactic Empires, Alpha Centauri, etc. They’re so boring compared to SC2.
Joe my friend, you are the most ugly Geisha ever to blight the face of the earth.
Totally looking forward to Shogun 2. Anyone else here who played the original game? I loved it
Does anyone know the song that sounds like 8-bit speed metal that he uses to highlight the game he is reviewing? with all the explosions around it and what not.
Have been looking for it for sometime now, but can NEVER find it.
somebody please help? Its driving me crazy… lol.
7:00 There is great disturbance in the force!
On-topic: The clan system looks quite interesting and I’m eager to see how it works out.
I wonder what the next Total War will be Imperialism Total War? Finally I can play as Otto Von Bismark and kick ass!
I was thinking that option to customise general might actually give opportunity to make it look like character from Sengoku Basara games. You know, one of those badasses.
Can anyone tell me what the song that is used in the beginning of this video and almost all other AJ videos is called?
It sounds like speed metal or hardcore turned 8-bit.
Always thought it was so cool, but could never (and still can’t) find it anywhere.
Thank you too anyone that can help put my mind at ease.
Great vid by the way Joe…
Geisha with a mustache… gotta love it.
Geisha Joe scares me.
This is my last try with the total war’s if they botch this one I give up.
I CANNOT UNSEE THAT!!! @.@
Looks like this could be a good game. I look forward to your full review.
I think that Geisha Joe will haunt my nightmares now. But seriously I think that this video might push me to getting this game, depending on your review I might be pushed back or over the edge to shelling out the money to get it.
“I think that Geisha Joe will haunt my nightmares now.”
^ This.
I don’t understand the hate for Napoleon Total War, i know its blasphemy but its my favourite of the entire series!
I think what it is, its not that people hated the game, they hated the style of combat. Creative Assembley did a perfect job of showing 18th century warfare. I mean they really did, how it happens on Napoleon is how battles were done in those days.
What i am trying to say is i don’t think people dislike the game, they just disliked that style of combat, with no real melee, no “siege” battles, it was a gamble and i loved it but i can see coming from rome to medieval to empire/napoleon its a huge change.
Hopefully the tips they learned from the gunfights will translate into Shogun nicely and you get a perfect blend in shogun as the time period is both bows and arrows and swords and rifles, i cant wait.
p.s Joe you are a wonderful geisha hahaha.
OH MY GOD!!! GEISHA JOE!!! CAN’T UNSEE!!!!! DX
joe you are a beautifil geisha!
Okay, I was expecting Geisha Joe, but I still laughed my butt off. (I wasn’t expecting geisha Joe to be wearing pink, and for some reason that just made it funnier. Maybe cause it’s my favorite color, I don’t know.) Great video Joe, and I hope the game is as good as you’re hoping it’ll be! Looking forward to the Angry review!
Geisha Joe has to be one of he funniest things that you have ever done Joe. It was so simple yet so funny.
Pity my computer almost surely won’t be able to handle it, I quite liked Rome and Medieval 2, as well as the scope of Empire’s map if nothing else.
Download the demo to try out if your rig can handle it.
I sure will.
My PC has been incapable of handling new computer games for some time – it barely handled Empire on minimum settings with no insignificant lag, I avoided Starcraft 2 because it could only do minimum settings with that, and it flat-out cannot handle Civilization 5 – so I’m pretty sure of how this will go. Still, I’ll give it a shot I suppose…
…or not. Estimated download time is over 3 hours. Not worth it to confirm what is surely a forgone conclusion.
This strangely reminds me of Lords of the Rising Sun, one of the games that came with my CDi. Hopefully Shogun II is not gonna have cheesy FMV actors, and tedious minigames between sieges. XD
Anyway great top 5 Angry Joe. Though I am curious of where you got the armor and the kimonos from.
The geisha girl in the blue was really hot. Nice legs in the outtake; should have made sure a shot of them made it into the actual footage. The other one would be hot if she shaved off her mustache and goatee.
By the way, what ever happened to Lisa? I was so looking forward to some more reviews with her.
Agree.
Where Lisa? And anyway who is this nice lady in this video?
Geisha Joe will haunt my nightmares for months
It is worse than baby Arnold Schwarzenegger
Thank you for reminding us of baby Arnorld…
Now you just have to do dancemasters: geisha’s dream in that outfit.
Weird every time I got poisoned by a Geisha I always end up like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IE5RIifdjY
The crepiest thing in Geisha Joe is that he seems kind of enjoy this
Let us say that is because of Joe good acting skills
Thumbs up for the other gaisha and for the top five reason!
Bah… give me Rome 2 Total War any day over this. Elephants over ninjas I say… wait ELEPHANT NINJAS! Excuse me I have to file a patent! *runs away*
Not gonna lie, Geisha Joe… EXTREMELY CREEPY!
From what i’ve seen the KI is pretty aggressive and intelligent in open battles, they know how to use their units. Though i heard in siege battles they don’t defend their flags and so you could just rush in there and occupy it. But maybe they fix that with a patch until the release.

And who is SHE?
I’d assume his girlfriend.
Would love to see a Beyond Good and Evil HD review
Geisha delight!
Now that’s something I don’t see everyday. Joe’s wearing a Samurai armor…. and it’s so すごい!
An epic samurai commander-bum announcing the Top 5 Reasons Total War: Shogun 2 will Kick Ass …Awesome!)変更!
Never trust a Geisha with a moustache bearing drinks.
MY EYES! MYYY EYESSS!! Although, glad to see my dubbing worked out at least kinda…
…I’d still hit it…
This game is my most anticipated game of this month. counting down the days till march 15th. the demo was a good slice of pie and loved it. Like you said Joe i also hope the the AI holds up and this becomes Creative Assembles Milestone in the total war franchise.
Goddammit. I KNEW minute 7 was coming. GAH MY EYES!
I’d hit it.
Of course! Mere things like gender are no barrier to Angry Joe!
