    I feel sorry for the guy who spent money to get this on Steam (sorry, didn’t catch the name). Alien Swarm does the top-down 3D co-op shoot-em-up thing much better, and it’s completely free. Hell, I feel like playing it right now after watching this.

    LOL talk about lazy game play design. Shoot da bloo stuff at bloo munsters. Shoot der yeller $#!t and der yeller monsters. Its like they intended it for 3 year olds. Maybe thats ment to be a commentary on the mental age of Ghost Busters fans? Then maybe the upside down gun isn’t a mistake but a big FU to the fans.

    I’m honestly not surprised at all that the PC/Steam version got shafted in regards to multiplayer. The first game had that problem as well. Sounded like the same exact thing too.. with them saying multiplayer was there the entire time during development, then suddenly having it removed before release. The first game also got little to no support at all in regards to its bugs and glitches.

    Atari just hates the PC, I guess.

    I’m still at a loss as to why this is going to be a two part review when its so obvious that you hate it, Joe. I mean were you so expecting it to be good that you planned everything out in advance, only to discover that its a turd the day you played it? The trailers gave you no warning whatsoever?

      What makes it make even less sense is if you pay attention to the video they’re already bias towards it being bad (or completely indifferent to the game all together as it seems in Amanda’s case) before they even join in together to start playing it. So why do a review at all if you can’t even come into it unbiased, should really be the question to ask.

      By that point in the video we had already been given the games whole review in Joe’s reaction in the very beginning was at the very least the whole review itself, having told us he played it and it was a travesty, which was more then enough of a review for most people. All we needed was a quick description of all its faults and the low score its obviously going to get, nothing more was/is necessary here..

    Wow, this is sad. To think the last Ghostbusters game came out so promising, it was like watching a third Ghostbusters movie. But this…. they didn’t even try to use the same mechanics as the last game, let alone the same continuity.

    I am so glad XBLA games come as trials. When I saw the trailer for this game I thought “How can you boil the Ghostbusters down to a right-stick-shooter?” I truly dislike right-stick-shooters but, it being Ghostbusters, I gave it a try. After playing the trial I felt like I needed a shower this game was so bad. Thank you Joe. Thank you for reaming this one. I can’t wait to see the killing blow you use to finish this game off.

    Seems to be:
    - bland lowres textures;
    - low poly models;
    - bad lighting (original xbox had better lighting see Baldur’s Gate);
    - game mechanics don’t translate well to source material. Ghostbusters does not do well as a 4 player shootemup. The only way that would work is if you’d make the enemies stronger requiring less of them on screen and add the restriction of all enemies NEEDING to get trapped. The more players guide the enemy in the trap (with their beams) the faster it gets trapped. Bosses would need a minimum of 4 players. I do like the inclusion of a boss-trap-QTE, just the wrong type of QTE if you ask me.
    - Enemies are unimaginitive and only invoke rudementary tactics, hence creating repetative gameplay;
    - Backtracking a lot;
    - Lack of epic setpieces;
    - Characters aren’t memorable -> have no personality (powers, quips, aesthetics);
    - No positive feedback on enemy death i.e. satisfying animation / explosion;
    - No sense of character growth (like contra-powerups! -> see why Ghostbuster and shmup doesn’t mix ^^ );
    - No overal sense of progression.

    Overal these are the impressions I got from the game. Happy you’re playing it instead of me. At least something entertaining will come of it. ^_____^

    There is just so much wrong with this game. Rather than using the rich and existing characters, you get four terrible looking nobodies. And you play as a new franchise, which would make sense, except that the game takes place in New York, which already has a team of Ghostbusters. This game couldn’t think to take place in Detroit or Los Angeles or Seattle or any other city which would need it’s own team…

      If I remember correctly the end of the “original” game the new franchise was going to be in Chicago -I think. so my best guess is they they must have forgotten that one line in the ending dialogue.

      And if they were to get the existing characters I would imagine they’d need likeness rights unless somehow they pulled the likenesses from The Real Ghostbusters, which this game is obviously not trying to make the distinction of doing since its supposed to be a follow up to the 2009 game. So My best guess is they didn’t want to go through with paying loads of money to get likeness right and probably didn’t want to go through the hassle of dealing with Bill Murray.

    Btw Joe, small correction.

    The steam version of the games ‘Local CoOp’ does not mean LAN. It is local, as in two people on one PC. One person on KB&M another on controller is how i played it.

    The upside is that the game is terrible so not being able to play this online with my friends is probably a good thing. I still wasted my money with the poor labeling of the game on steam.

    Ummm….what’s so bad about it? It’s just…you know…whatever. It’s not flat out insulting or terrible or destructive to the franchise like the beginning led me to believe. It’s just a sort of blah game. I agree with Amanda, this really isn’t all that bad. It’d probably be more fun than Magicka if that has so many stability issues. But apparently, the second video has a lot more stupid shit in it…huh…

      I think the biggest complaint about it is the the fact that it is such a blah game when it’s got the Ghostbusters license attached to it, especially after the rather well-done outing of the 2009 game. The fact that they didn’t even attempt to organize something remotely close to the first game points out pretty clearly that it’s just a cash-in.

      Nothing in particular, really. It’s an average twin stick shooter with an interesting story and a decent Ghostbusters feel to it. Graphics are a bit bland and it feels like you don’t get to know this new team well enough (For that matter, where’d the last rookie go? They mention him but he’s never seen.), but otherwise it’s completely average. But you have to remember, this is a That Guy With The Glasses spin off site. If you aren’t whining about the subject, making hilariously exaggerated complaints (Worse than Free Riders? I refuse to believe you even played this), and dressing up like a loon, you may as well not be on the site. Is it really so much to ask to get a good review around here? I want a review of a game. Not a terrible skit, not an advertisement, not a Let’s Play. A review. Is it really that hard?

      That’s exactly what I was thinking… And it feels less like Ghostbusters than the home computer version of that very old Ghostbusters game, you know the one which had the logo trace the map…

      It’s funny, because both games share one premise: You’re not the original Ghostbusters but a franchisee. And if your game is worse than one which is widely considered bad (even though I have to disagree), you’re doing it wrong.

    Anyway, the problem I see with this is that you can replace this with any other kind of shooter theme and it would make just as much sense. Ghost Busters this shouldn’t really be, if they wanted to go for a Ghost Busters game I would think they would have gone the approach from the Xbox360 version, and not this.

Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime Review

2009 was a good year for the licensed game. While there were still plenty of duds, titles like Batman: Arkham Asylum and Ghostbusters went a long way to prove that a licensed property did not automatically have to be a kiss of death for a video game. While a big budget follow-up to the former is still pending, a smaller scale sequel to the latter has now arrived on XBLA, PSN, and Steam in the form of Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime. Does this four-player action game make bustin feel good, or does it cross the streams and obliterate any potential for fun?

PROS The title screen features the classic theme song.
CONS Horrible game design, terrible graphics, forgettable story, resuses same levels multiple times, poorly implemented multiplayer
WTF?! Winston, what have they done to you?

Some years have passed since everyone’s favorite spook-hunting foursome had their last major adventure, and they are starting to feel their age. So, when a new wave of ghoulies and other nasties start making their presence known in the Big Apple, the call goes out for some fresh blood to hit the scene and help the guys out. Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime places you in the roles of these rookies on their first, very eventful, day on the job. A day that will take them from familiar haunts to the edge of existence itself. If all this sounds like just one more piece of bad fan-fiction, that is because it more or less is.

Like every other aspect of Sanctum, the story that plays out is a hastily thrown together affair, featuring poor writing, shallow characters, and one unfunny one-liner after another. The bulk of the story is told in the laziest form possible, namely voiceless still images done up in the style of comic panels, with said panels featuring art that tends towards the terribly drawn at best. Preexisting characters look almost nothing like their real life counterparts, while newer characters often seem to diverge wildly from their in-game looks. The new crew is utterly forgettable, while what little role the originals play, limited almost entirely to the cutscenes, tends to feel like a writer simply going through the motions and dredging up some well-worn character traits. The plot is a simple rehash of the movies, and by the time you reach the end of this so-called adventure, you will have little doubt as to why none of the original cast chose to lend their voices to this game.

Finding it hard to determine what’s going on in this picture? Welcome to Sanctum of Slime, folks.

As mediocre as the story of Sanctum is, the rest of the elements that make up the game are even worse. Run into a room. Get locked in said room. Proceed to kill all the enemies present so that you can exit the room. Then run into a new room and repeat. That basically describes 95% of Sanctum of Slime’s gameplay, and it, as you could imagine, gets old real fast. Compounding this problem is the fact that the game only has four levels (the hotel, the insane asylum, the sewers, and the graveyard), with each level being reused a second time, with only minor cosmetic changes being present to justify this, to further pad out the game’s play time. Combine a lack of gameplay depth with a lack of creativity in level design and you have a recipe for one of the worse playing games I have encountered in at least the last five years.

The game also employs a simple control layout: the left analog stick controls your character’s movement while the right analog stick aims and fires your weapons. Sound familiar? That’s because it is, and the action in Sanctum plays like any of the number of top-down shooters that have come down the pipes over the years. While simple does not automatically mean bad, the action in Sanctum is as generic and route as any game I have encountered. There is no attempt at variety, as the game features no puzzles or additional gameplay elements of any kind. Even worse, the game’s mechanics could have been slotted into any number of other licensed properties. Outside of the brief, and boring, quick time mini-game that is used to trap boss characters, nothing about the way this game plays does anything to capture the feel or essence of the license it employs.

This is from the second time you fight this boss. Because reusing levels was not enough for this game.

On the console side of things, Sanctum does indeed feature the much touted online four-person multiplayer (unlike the PC version, which requires players to huddle around the same screen due to the lack of even local LAN functionality), but all this really does is give you a chance to inflict pain on any friends, family, or strangers foolish enough to join you in slogging it out across the game’s brief three hour campaign. The multiplayer is clumsily implemented, lacking any kind of drop-in/drop-out functionality, and having four human players can lead to frequent lag and slowdown, no matter how good everyone’s connection speed might be. In the five games of multiplayer I played, I encountered such problems every time, while also running across game killing bugs twice. Inexplicably, for some reason the between level cutscenes that tell the majority of Sanctum’s story are not present in multiplayer. Since the story, for all its faults, was easily the best part of the game, this choice helps to sap what little fun might have been present in Sanctum’s multiplayer gameplay.

The game rounds out its design by employing a color-based system where the red blaster does more damage to red enemies, the yellow blaster does more damage to yellow enemies, and the blue blaster does more damage to blue enemies. Yet this system is so poorly implemented into the overall game, the developers probably would have been better off not bothering to include it. While matching colors can make the game a little easier, I was able to blow through much of the game in single-player, as part of a vain attempt to add some excitement to the game, using only my basic red proton wand. The color-based enemies and weapons feel like little more than a tacked-on element at best. Also, many of the colored enemies, especially the smaller blue ones, can look so much like your weapon fire that it can be difficult to tell what you are actually shooting at.

The game’s two on-rails, vehicle-based levels are probably the closest Sanctum comes to actually being fun.

Speaking of Sanctum’s visuals, the game’s graphics are of as poor a quality as the rest of the game. Character models are stiffly rendered at best, with enemies being limited to only a handful of ever repeating designs while human characters fare even worse. Also, the levels tend to look like they came right out a first year computer design student’s homework assignment. Worse of all, visually speaking, the game’s fixed overhead camera is so high up that it can often be nearly impossible to decipher the action that is occurring on screen, particularly in the game’s darker and/or more fog-filled levels. The music is utterly forgettable, with the famous Ghostbusters theme song being limited to the game’s opening screen and closing credits. There is absolutely no voice work of any kind, but considering how poorly done everything else in this game has proven to be, this is probably a blessing.

Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime is a disaster of a game on every level, to the point that I am amazed that Atari even bothered releasing it to the market. Even bad licensed games can often feature something of value for the hardcore fan base if no one else, but not Sanctum. Ghostbusters fans should join the rest of the gaming community in avoiding this title at all cost. Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime is easily among the worst products the Ghostbusters franchise has ever produced. It is a horrible title and one of the least enjoyable gaming experiences I have ever suffered through. Avoid this game at all costs.

A review copy of this game was purchased by the reviewer. The reviewer spent approximately six hours playing the game on Xbox Live Arcade and completed the main campaign in both single and multiplayer.

2/10

    So what if this is a repeat, this is still the reviewers direct view point. I really like seeing MANY view points on the same thing before I go about getting it, though I may not have even entertained the idea of getting THIS game, I know that it’s worse than any game I would willingly release. (With no experience…)

    Just a quick tidbit to pull on, It’s not based on the original ghostbusters, or a follow up on the game of 2009. This game is using a sublicense of the Ghostbusters, The Extreme Ghostbusters, or something like that. It was a TV show for a while, and I am pretty sure these 4 are from that same TV show.

      Incorrect actually. I loved that show, own it on DVD, and none of these characters are from it. Also, in several interviews, the game’s staff did mention the intention for Slime to be a direct sequel to the 2009 game. One of these characters was originally supposed to be the rookie from that game, but clearly they abandoned that idea.

    The video Play Thought Was quite long to watch. And anyway there are people that like more written review. So I think it is useful, it’s not redundant. This complete the coverage of the game.

    I know its slightly different because its from your point of view and its written, and not in video form, but the feelings expressed in this review are blatantly clear in Joe’s review, considering you were playing with him, Amanda and Dan. Considering most of you complained before you even started playing the game it was pretty clear how you all felt any way, so doesn’t it seem a little redundant to do this review when we’ve pretty much heard what all of you think during Joe’s already unnecessarily long video?

    Either way it sucks they’ve done such a bad job on this game but frankly what are we going to do about a licensed game? We were really lucky when they didn’t screw up the 2009 game, hopefully if they make another game in that vain lightning will strike twice.
