the controls were not dumbed down. mages, archers, and rogues still have to use strategy in how they move and attacke, two handed warriors are good at crowd control due to their ability to hit multiple enemies at once, and sword shielders are tanks. you have to take a step back and look at it from a different angle.

I was never a big fan of auto attack, go make a sandwich, come back and you’ve beaten a boss type playing.

    I finished it last night..

I just want to sleep, and when I wake up, I want to see a remake of DA 2.

What happened to the wonderful story of Morrigan and Flemeth? There was so much plot potential, The story of the architect, etc. Almost none of the DA1 Premium content plots were fully explored.

I’m sad, so very sad.. Oh Alistair.

I’m going to play Da 1 again, and pretend Da 2 never happened to me.

The difficulty in this game on highest setting comes from all the enemies coming from below the ground (or falling from the sky) in the middle of the fight making it impossible to have any good positioning. There’s no real crowd control as well (very ineffective) and with 25 enemies per fight (easily) there’s no strategy other than rounding them up to do an AoE dump. Also bullshit immunities (bandits immune to frost etc) that make you guess what will work and what will not.

To encounter the worst AI in a loooong time, especially on Hard and nightmare the Ranged AI is just utterly retarded running into melee, loosing commands in the fight itself and more.

makes me want to punch EA in the face. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DONT GIVE DEVS TIME TO MAKE GOOD GAMES! its called cash-in for EA and its exactly why if EA’s involved we cannot have good things..

hope they enjoy the cashin mediocre sells of their next DA if there even is one. they’re killing the franchise with the quickness, its pretty much dead actually.. and after only one game.

    but thats just my imo.

just because EA loses millions every year. Doesnt mean they need to bring the devs down with them. (i guess if they kill off good game design then they will eventually come out on top?? iono wtf EA is thinking..)

Those ratings are pretty funny. It has such a low user score though because it seems people tend to greatly exaggerate their love or hate. Almost all the bad reviews are 0s, 1s, or 2s, and almost all the good reviews are 8s, 9s, or 10s. That’s not really fair if you ask me, because it’s just bias. Good game reviews should focus on all merits as well as downfalls. Instead, you have people complaining about aspects of the game that they only bring down because they hate one core aspect. I saw one user review give it a 1 just because there’s no isometric camera angle.

For example, if someone really hates the combat mechanics, he’ll probably end up ranting about really peculiar shit. These are actual arguments I’ve observed that just made me really scratch my head and wonder what the hell these people are thinking:

The graphics are worse than DA1
      There is no plot
It’s made to appease frat boys (I really lol’d at that one)
      “Mortal Combat” style fighting
      Dynasty Warriors gameplay
      It’s a Sonic-like game
There are no Skills anymore, beside the fighting skills (what?)
They pay reviewers to give good reviews
      “Street Fighter Dragon Edition”
Gone are the “grey” moral areas, and choices that affect the story
This gave deserves atari E.T treatment.Dump this **** in the landfill
      inferior music
you cant speak to your companions

I don’t really know what else to say to arguments that are either flat out wrong or just ridiculous.

eh, I don’t really have an informed opinion on the matter, since I haven’t played the game, but I will say that EA probably dropped the ball on this one. If the gaming mechanics really were dumbed down and the exploration aspect has been hindered than it sounds like EA is alienating their core demographic here.

Now, guys, let’s all calm down, haters and fanboys alike.
The game is very simplified, even more than ME2 was, but that doesn’t make it a bad game. I think people are taking what benzai tried to say a little too harsh.
It’s not a BAD game, but it’s no longer a strategy-RPG, it’s a hack’n'slash with RPG elements. I don’t remember who said it before, but it’s ”like playing WoW, controling the whole party”.

I understand the rage some people feel when they see that it surely isn’t DA:O, but believe me, it’s better if you don’t try to compare it. I mean, i was really disapointed with DA:O and Neverwinter Nights when i compared them with Baldur’s Gate 2, but then i just erased that comparison from my mind and started enjoying the game for what it is, and not for what i hope it was.

Of course it doesn’t make a lot of sense to compare two completely different games, that have nothing to do with each other and expect them to be alike. But a sequel? That should stay true to its (Dragon Age) origins. And I’m sure many liked the strategy aspect of DA:O.

I also have to disagree with some of the people on here and say that I found the characters and story to be very compelling, more-so than the first game. I honestly found myself more emotionally invested in the story and characters. I still enjoyed DA1′s characters, but I don’t think Alistair was that charming or funny, nor Leliana that complex and conflicted, nor Oghren that endearing. I could see what they were going for, but ultimately didn’t feel they accomplished it. I think Morrigan was the most interesting character. Zevran only held a passing interest for me. Wynne was mature and wise and had more of a real persona to me, but she still wasn’t too interesting.

I like what they did with DA2′s story and characters. I really get the feeling that Varric is like a true friend as they make him out to be. I like Fenris and his dark and brooding personality which is funny, because normally I don’t like overly dark and brooding. Fenris is strangely compelling nonetheless. I could really feel Anders’ (as annoying as he was) and Sebastian’s emotions in their beliefs. Isabela is truly fascinating as she can both disappoint and exceed your expectations of her given her inner conflict. I could go on, but I think you get the idea. Basically, I think DA2′s characters emoted much better than the first, both in their writing and in acting.

As for the story, it’s different from DA1. There isn’t one single goal of the plot that you have to strive to like in the first one (i.e. stopping the Blight). The plot is approached differently here. I did not have a clear sense of purpose for a while, but I think that was part of the point. The first part of the story is meant to show that the hero is just trying to find a place for himself in the world. As it goes on, it’s meant to show us just the many struggles the hero goes through over the years as he eventually changes the entire world around him.

I’m not saying this style is superior to the first. I like this style of narrative, it’s actually kind of refreshing to me. I felt I could connect more to a character who slowly has to build himself up from nothing just to even be able to make a dent in the fucked up society around him. His sense of place is slowly elevated more and more as the game goes along until the scale finally surpasses that of the first game. In the first, the country was always at stake, and by the end of the game, the stakes remain the same. In the second, the stakes are simple survival, and by the end, the entire world is affected by your actions.

Don’t overlook the story and characters and simply dismiss them as being inferior. I like what they did with them a lot. Sorry for the tl;dr

Umm…well first off, isn’t this game being advertised as more of an action RPG anyway? Second, don’t you have control of your entire party, meaning you could issue complex orders to each individual person? Third, can’t you hand-tailor party tactics so they can all function in a complex battle plan of your own making?

I mean, I guess you could ignore most of the strategy, then complain there’s no strategy. You’re not going to impress that way, but if that really makes you happy, who am I to judge?

From what I’ve read from the reviews, Dragon Age 2 was ported onto the PC from the console version, and not the other way around like the first game. So the console version is supposed to be superior in DA2′s case.

Not sure if that’s 100% true, but they removed things from the first game, like the zoomed out isometric views.

I’ll be waiting for an UE though, so I haven’t has a chance to try it myself.

This game was a big disappointment to me, because coming from BioWare I expected more. Basically the game just decreased in almost every aspect from the first DA. There is a lot of difference between playing on normal difficult to playing on Nightmare difficult as it was already said here. On normal difficult you basically go foward careless on a killing spree on “Devil May Cry style” you could say. The game is easy, very easy to who is used to play RPGs. No need for strategy or anything, just “kill the ranged attackers first them kill the stronger enimies later” just like it, basically the entire game. There is no friend fire on caster’s spells (unlike on DAO) wich makes it even more easier. On Nightmare, things get harder you will mostly die at least one time for each new battle, you have to move the enemies from their original spot use the map to get some strategic points, even so in the middle of a fight enemies will appear from nowhere behind your characters which totally blow up any strategic positioning of the characters. Anyway on nightmare the game becomes much more challenging and as much frustrating it may be it become much more funnier than normal. I personally started playing on nightmare and I felt like cheating playing it on normal later, because of how cheap easy it is. Regardless of wich difficult you play the game still very simplified from the original. Just the main character uses the full gear (boots, gloves and stuff) The others can just equip one weapon and specific designed armors for each of them, that you found a few on the game, unlike on DAO where you could wear a plate armor with a mage (if you had the str to do it) and freely customize the equipments of your friends. Shortly: The story is weaker, the characters are less interesting the gameplay is simplified and the dialogue options are simplified and a lot of times pointless.

Normal mode seems more like an action game you can with by button smashing in the consoles and on the PC you just click and wait, I honestly liked the first one better, the characters were more interesting, the story better delivered, and Is it just me or did the world seem a lot smaller to anyone else?

Actually The game is probably much more challenging in higher difficulties…But the simplifications in customization, tactics and equipment micromanaging are obvious…Goddammit Bioware did this with mass effect 2 also…I get it you can’t make 2 different versions of the same game..If you can’t incorporate all this suitably in a gamepad control scheme just provide consoles with a F$#%# keyboard and mouse instead of stripping the game of parts that are actually enjoyable and ruining franchises with dumbed down sequels…

I have yet to play it myself, but I enjoyed the first one, and I was a little worried when I heard that you had to mash buttons to attack. I miss old style RPGs, they all seem to be becoming some strange hybrid of RPG and action game now.

Dragon Age 2: Legacy Review

Dragon Age 2: Legacy Review

Dragon Age 2 was, for any number of reasons, one of the more divisive games to come out from Bioware in some time. Some people thought it was a brilliant reinvention of the franchise, while others saw it as unnecessary tinkering with an already successful formula. Now the first major piece of DLC for the game has hit the digital shelves in the form of a new content based expansion titled Legacy. Does this previously unexplored story of the Hawke bring glory to the family name or is it simply another example of good intentions gone horribly awry?

PROS Good story, enjoyable tweaks to DA2 combat, well designed environments
CONS Only makes small changes to overall DA2 formula, poor ally AI, some bugs present,
WTF?! Whatever insanity is going on with Larius’ hair

Dragon Age: Origins had a decidedly mixed success rate when it came to the various examples of DLC released for the game. Outside of Awakening (which could have easily been a completely stand-alone game in the first place), the remainder of Origin’s expansions were fairly pointless affairs that did little to add to the overall experience of the original game. So it was with some trepidation that I began my journey through Legacy, the first major expansion for Dragon Age 2. Thankfully, what I got was less the kind of DLC that the original Dragon Age: Origins tended to produce, and instead an experience more akin to the excellent expansions that Mass Effect 2 continuously rewards fans of that game with.

Legacy tells a previously untold adventure of Hawke and company that can be accessed at almost any point in the game, including post-ending. The game opens with the now familiar scene of everyone’s favorite dwarf Varric being interrogated by the dour templar Cassandra. She brings up the fact that Varric has been less than forthcoming about a certain adventure Hawke had undertaken in regards to a previously unknown Grey Warden prison. With a shrug and his trademark grin, Varric agrees to tell the tale, but warns Cassandra that she will likely never believe how an encounter with the mafia-esque dwarven organization known as the Carta would lead Hawke to heretofore undiscovered familial secrets and, ultimately, into a confrontation with an entity out of the darkest recesses of the history of Thedas itself…

Swing batter batter swing.

Legacy’s story is a well done and highly enjoyable narrative. While it never reaches the depths and complexities of the game’s main narrative, it none-the-less weaves an engaging yarn that has major implications for both Hawke and the overarching mythology of the Dragon Age universe. Depending on which characters a player chooses to bring with them, Legacy also gives the other party members (Varric, the Hawke sibling, and Anders in particular) a good amount to say and do, a fact that only serves to make the expansion’s story all the more engaging. Legacy’s climax also features the kind of tricky choices that Bioware likes to include in their games, with the aftermath of said choices promising repercussions for players somewhere down the line, be it in another expansion or possibility even Dragon Age 3. Overall, Legacy produces a tale that stands well enough on its own while also introducing elements that serve to hint at where the next major chapter in the Dragon Age saga is likely to be heading.

Legacy does not dramatically change Dragon Age 2′s approach to gameplay, but it does feature some significant tweaks that help to freshen up the overall experience. First and foremost, Legacy almost entirely (save for one brief encounter early on in the expansion) does away with the kind of limited and repetitive dungeon design that helped to mar the overall experience of DA2. There is nice amount of visual variety in the various areas that make up the Warden’s Prison, ranging from a desert landscape to crumbling dungeon tunnels to the mist filled caverns beneath the prison proper, and the layout of said areas is similarly less straightforward than what was typically encountered in DA2 proper. While Legacy is still a fairly linear affair, it at least features more than one straight corridor after another stitched together. The expansion even includes a good number of wholly optional side areas to explore, many of which play a part in Legacy’s handful of similarly optional side-quests.

Does not exactly scream safe work environment, does it?

Combat also tends to be both more difficult and enjoyable in Legacy, with a number of interesting new enemy types, such as the Genlock Alpha whose large shield makes him nearly immune to frontal attacks, present to give players new challenges to deal with. The lack of repeated homogeneous dungeon layouts also lets Bioware be cleverer in the placement and makeup of enemy encounters. Frequent ambushes (in the form of enemies positioned so that they blend nearly seamlessly into the environment or by having a smaller force flee and draw the party into larger encounters) abound, while the expansion’s various sub-boss encounters tend to feature more varied tactics than simply throwing a bunch of random enemies at the party. The final boss encounter in Legacy is particularly noteworthy, and it is easily among (if not simply the) most difficult encounters to be had within the entirety of Dragon Age 2. To be fair, this difficulty does arise in part because the game’s finicky party A.I. can easily lead to defeat without careful management on the part of the player, but this is a relatively minor annoyance in light of how genuinely epic and fun this boss fight ultimately turns out to be.

All in all, Legacy is a highly enjoyable experience but that is not to say it does not have its fair share of flaws. Legacy never reaches the level of ambition or accomplishment that the best Mass Effect 2 expansions strived for, such as introducing new/unique gameplay elements or creating locations with an almost startling level beauty. While the aforementioned gameplay tweaks do improve thing to a degree, ultimately Legacy plays near identically to the way it progenitor did. Also, while the Warden’s Prison looks better than most DA2 dungeons did, it never reaches the level of visual design that Bioware was able to achieve during the exploration of the Atlas Station or the exterior of the Shadow Broker’s lair.

Be prepared for this guy to kick you ass. A lot.

In essence how players will feel about Legacy will largely depend on their overall feelings about Dragon Age 2 in general. Personally, I walked away from my time with the expansion feeling like I got my money’s worth, but I also was someone who never found the weaknesses of DA2 ever came close to outweighing its strengths. For someone who absolutely hated DA2, Legacy will do little to change this opinion. On the other hand, for those who enjoyed DA2 but wished it had more closely resembled Dragon Age: Origins, then Legacy could very well be exactly the kind of experience the kind of expansion you are looking for. While Legacy never reaches the heights that such Bioware expansions as Lair of the Shadow Broker or Overlord did, it also never hits the lows of Witch Hunt or The Golems of Amgarrak either. It remains an enjoyable and robust three to four hour experience, one that also hopefully bodes well for whatever future Dragon Age 2 downloadable content is yet to come.

A review copy of this game was purchased on PC by the reviewer. The reviewer spent approximately four hours playing the game and the game was completed.

Without a doubt the DLC which serves as the role model to all overs from BioWare is Lair of the Shadow Broker: it adds to the story, plays a vital to a former squard member, has a plot which which is on par with the main plot, great visuals and music and gives the player quite a bit more once it is over.

Awakening also did it’s job well but it could benefit from having being extended but it’s good on it’s own merits. Owning a land, hiring recruits, taking care of the land, making the fort and forces more powerful and a chance to continue the story from origins was nice. But dealing with a conspiricy with various ways to do so was a woudnerful addition.

As for Legacy any reason to be in a freaking different area and fight different foes is a plus. While I don’t miss the overly complciated chess style of gameplay Origins had I feal that having faster combat a to higher price to pay when everything else gets croped to a bare skeleton.

I’m going to wait until DA2 comes down in price or releases a GOTY edition to see if the love/hate relationship is as deservedly ambivalent as it is.

    Yeah,
Bioware said that they would fix the issues the “customers” have with DA II.

And what do we get? Where is the fix for the “normal” game? Not here I guess.
This is bullcrap, this is EA taking your money and you smile and throw your money at their feet.

The same thing that Joe stated for Capcom happens here and with EA in general. Really expensive DLC’s that should be in the main game, fixing issues that annoy the crap out of all gamers.

But what do they do? Nothing! And the retarded ones buy this crap, ruining Bioware, because its working as EA plans.

Biowares dead man. Sold out to EA, just like Blizzard to Activision.

Good DLC is hard to make for a story-driven game, because the story in a DLC will never have the epic length or scope of the main quest. This latest DA2 addition sounds decidedly “MEH,” and I may get Legacy provided it is bundled together with all the upcoming DLC in the inevitable “Game of the Year Edition.”
