Dissidia 012[duodecim] Final Fantasy doesn’t come out for a few more weeks (in the west), but it’s already topping the sales charts in Japan. It even managed to beat all the 3DS incumbents, including Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask. It didn’t quite sell as much as the first Dissidia, nearly 500,000, but still did fairly well in it’s own right.
Below is a list of the top 10 best selling games in Japan from 2/28-3/6, compiled by the Japanese gaming website 4gamer.

Dissidia 012[duodecim] Final Fantasy is the next, and final, iteration in the Dissidia series, at least as a fighting game. With a slew of new characters, game modes, and features, this title really packs a punch. Without really re-working the fighting system, DDFF could really be considered an expansion pack more than a sequel. That being said, there is a ton of content here that will definitely keep you entertained longer than you might think.
| PROS | New characters, features, fun fighting, and a ton of content overall. |
| CONS | The cutscenes are SO redundant and just drag on and on. |
| WTF?! | Including Shantotto and not Ramza. C’mon Square. |
The story in Dissidia 012 is essentially a re-hash of the first game. Cosmos and Chaos are waging a war and the warriors of light have rallied to defeat the forces of evil and their clone army. This never-ending swarm of clones has the warriors questioning their allegiance and purpose in the world. It’s generic yes, but there is just enough plot to keep the story mode moving along. The one main issue is the pacing. The characters keep talking about the same issues over and over. There are rarely story arcs that keep you interested enough to not skip the cut scene.
The story mode has been given a complete and welcomed overhaul. Players will no longer be given a continuous barrage of bland game boards, not in the same way at least. Dissidia 012 has opted for an RPG approach with a free-roaming world map. Scattered across the world map are various treasures, power ups, random battles, and portals to dungeons. Some dungeons are optional this time around, while others are part of the story. The dungeons themselves should be very reminiscent to players familiar with the series.
Within each dungeon is a board where your character moves along a series of paths. The board has a number of enemies obstructing your path to the exit, as well as other goodies to pick up along the way. What’s nice about this new board is that there aren’t any more confusing limitations to your movement. You also don’t have to complete the story mode to obtain the rarer items, there tend to be tougher enemies guarding them however. The whole experience is much more stream-lined and easier to understand.
The one aspect that is sure to upset a few people is that you don’t have the option to choose the character you play with. In fact, in the first story mode you can only play as the new characters: Lightning, Laguna, Yuna, Kain, Vaan, and Tifa. I think the idea behind this was to make a more cohesive plot with each character’s story playing a specific role in the overall narrative. However, upon completing the 012 storyline, you unlock a 013 storyline that allows you to play with other familiar characters.
Gamers familiar with the original Dissidia will feel right at home, as the fighting system hasn’t changed much. You’re still flying around, running up walls, and skating on terrain in attempts to pummel your enemy. You have two types of attacks, HP attacks and bravery attacks. Landing hits with bravery attacks will build up your HP attack gauge. Bravery attacks don’t actually deplete your enemy’s health though, only HP attacks will. The action is as fluid and intense as ever as you fly around the map trying to land hits.
The biggest addition to the fighting was the inclusion of an assist character. Like the story mode, you can’t choose your assist character, even in arcade mode. However, this feature does add to the chaos of the fights and is a nice inclusion. You can call them in to land bravery attacks, HP attacks, or break up a combo if you’re getting railed on. There’s nothing like a well-timed assist attack to turn the tide of a fight.
The dialogue in this game is WAY better than the original’s. It actually makes sense. Especially Laguna’s dialogue. That guy’s hilarious.
Great review but one thing that you didn’t mention, In the original game you can use alt costumes in the story mode, buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut in the sequel/remake you can’t that includes dlc costumes, this makes the multiple costumes in this version almost useless unless Square can put a patch up to fix this issue. Other then this minor complaint& the Original Quests in our versions this game is good. Though Thank GOD you don’t have to see the warriors of Cosmos get their crystals over&over like the original did,That drove me NUTS!
There’s a SKIP button.
Enough with the ff11 bashing cause its an mmo, 11 is an numbered entry of the series, tactics is not and that wont change no matter how much people whine.
its not like i wouldnt enjoy ramza but ever since shantotto and now prishe was announced all i hear is bitching about “zomg why that unneeded char and not “insert personal favorite here”
give it a rest
Great game and review.Spent a hundred hours in the first game and going to spend the same amount of hours in duodecim(The emperor needs new victims). But do not be cocky at the beginning of the game or Mооglе unleashed upon you his watchdog)))
I had heard that Dissidia might not return as a fighting game, but what would that be like?
I think the Tactics characters were excluded precisely because they were from Tactics. Really, they should have put in Balthier, Ashe, or Basch instead of Vaan.
You actually are forced to play with girls like Yuna and Tifa? :/
Do not want…
Guess this game isn’t for me :/
Wow, how fragile is your sense of masculinity? That’s just sad.
Excellent review.
I’m only on chapter 6, but thusfar I can say that the biggest difference between the original and Duodecim is that the writing…actually isn’t half-bad. Unlike the original, my fingers are not constantly itching for the “skip scene” button. That said, the writing still isn’t great, either; it still revolves around a verging-nonsensical idea and we don’t learn anything new about the characters we didn’t already know.
The next thing (which I can’t believe Taylor didn’t mention) is EX Revenge, where you can trade an EX charge to cheap-shot your opponents if they’ve hit you. I LOVE this feature. Assists only moderately change the gameplay because they are of only one or the other attack type and are so short-lived that, unless you’re close to a break, they don’t really change a lot of strategy…but having to worry about being cheap-shot when releasing HP attacks adds even more strategy to the game if you–like me–tend to sit on EX bursts.
I was really disappointed when I heard Laguna was going to be on it and not another hottie like Tifa (aka Quistis) but now I’m not so blue about it. In my first fifteen minutes of gameplay Laguna made me laugh out loud no fewer than five times; he’s just such a lovable cavalier. . .moron. I’m still a little sore, though, about not seeing one of my PSOne crushes….
Definitely a must-have title, though. Duodecim has rather conclusively shown me that Dissidia has potential to become much more than pure fan-service and stand on par with the mainline FF titles…if the main idea of the conflict was worked on and if the writing were taken one notch further. In the meantime, I can say that, while it’s still fan-service, it’s fan-service of exceptional quality.
This licence is awesome… I still think they will can only Win by working on a Home console version of Dissidia.
Best fighter imo. There hasn’t been such a vast array of amazingly differing characters since Mortal Kombat Trilogy.
Also, such a relief from the regular button mashing formula found in every other game.
Didn’t MK Trilogy have like 6 male ninja character palette swaps, 4 female ninja swaps, and 3 cyborg swaps? That’s like a third of all the characters in the game!
They didn’t have the same moves. Maybe you (and the other 4 idiots) should play a game before you denounce it.
I’m loving this game so far.
If you’re finding Tifa limited, it’s probably because you aren’t using her Feints to full advantage. She’s meant to attack relentlessly and feint around attacks and behind the opponent at the best moments.
I agree with the rest of your assessments, and I definitely recommend this game myself as well. Fights with a friend can get pretty intense sometimes, too, especially if you’re on an even skill level.
I agree with you 100%. I tried getting a feel for all the characters in general, never really mastering one in particular.
Yeah, that’s one of the best parts of this game, don’t you think? All the characters play so very differently. There are some characters I can’t play at -all- but my friend is great with, like Kefka, and vice-versa. It really lets you find someone that fits you well, and also lets you switch off when you’re fatigued on one character and feel like you’re playing a whole different game.
Also, for Laguna, I agree with what you said and I haven’t found him to be too great yet, I just love him because I can hold down the machine gun button and yell Rambo-style. XD
Good Review
Great review and awesome game Taylor.

Square Enix will be releasing a special edition PSP in conjunction with Dissidia 012. Don’t worry, it’s not a PSP GO.
Dissidia 012 has been given a release date and some new information about the characters has been revealed. Not to mention, a few more details from the game’s producer Tetsuya Nomura.
Music Mondays revisits the band that brought us tunes from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Bit.Trip Runner.
Well, at least they said this would be the last in the Dissidia series..
Okay, Nomura said the last in this “form”. So perhaps a JRPG Dissidia like game???
Sephiroth:Cloud, do you like the square-enix for many years of milking a series of your final fantasy, shoving yours and my face where they want and making you more a hero than Zack?
Cloud: I felt like it.(evil face)
Sephiroth:Good puppet, I Bring You ‘dis Pear!
This actually surprised me. I thought Dissidia 012 would do well, but topping the charts? Wow. I wouldn’t have guessed that it would be selling that well.
Not that surprising considering how successful the first game was, they had an adjustment period for the first “A final fantasy fighting game you say?”, I’m getting this when it releases here in 2 weeks
Well, I expected this game to sell well, but I honestly didn’t think it would make it onto the very top of the top sales chart! My goodness. Still, I guess this goes to show that even after all the rather disappointing titles being churned out at this point, there’s still a very large and devoted fanbase for the Final Fantasy games. It’s kind of like recent Sonic games: the consoles games are really disappointing, but the handheld games have actually been pretty good.
Also, if I may quote Jesu Otaku for a moment: “Star Driver is AWESOME!”
Of course Star Driver is awesome and it will most likely get another 26 eps
Star Driver is simply FABULOUS.
