Believe it or not, Star Trek Online is a year old today and developer Cryptic Studios and publisher Atari are breaking out the Blood Wine to celebrate.
As part of the festivities, Star Trek Online’s developer Cryptic Studios is holding a few special events. The first, starting February 2, is the ability to meet and greet the STO staff in the game’s world. Players will be able to interact with the staff and ask questions, as well as answer trivia questions from the team that could yield some awesome prizes.
Not only that, but the Cryptic Store is having a 20% off sale on select ships, uniforms, and other items through February 4.
The biggest draw however is a new five episode series titled “Cloaked Intentions” that will begin February 5. The five episode series centers around the Romulan Empire and a brewing civil war that the player must help quell. Cryptic is also promising a few new ships will be introduced as well.
Star Trek Online was released February 2, 2010 and was met with lukewarm reception from critics, gamers, and Trekkies alike. Since then, Cryptic has taken the criticism quite seriously and has endeavored over the past year to greatly improve the game. As part of the anniversary, Cryptic has posted a one year recap video hosted by STO’s executive producer, Daniel Stahl, which details a lot of the changes and improvements that have been implemented since the game’s launch.
Like an old bottle of Romulan Ale, perhaps Star Trek Online will continue to get better with age. While I myself have never been a fan of STO, Cryptic’s efforts to improve the game and welcome back those who were previously burned by their experiences are commendable. If this is a sign of good things to come, then here’s hoping that Cryptic and Atari’s vision of the 25th century will live long and prosper for many years to come.

I’ve never even considered getting this game before but now it looks really good. I especially like the fan made missions thing, as it could add allot to the game world.
Hmmm Bridge Interiors and More Klingon stuff Good. I had suggested those from my Top 5 Things I hate about STO. I wonder though about these New Non-combat missions whether they are any good. Hmmmm. I still think the engine is lacking. If they game launched right now, things might have been a bit different though.
I’ll think about it, lol.
I wish this would just go Free to Play, come on Free2Play!
Haha… just feel good that you didn’t buy a lifetime subscription…
Although the decommissioned Borg are kinda awesome.
Well last I heard things where looking good over at champions online when they went free to play, and cryptic said that if champions did well that would be a clear message that it is a good idea. Considering there next project Neverwinter will start free to play I think its just a matter of time. As a player who was disappointed at launch I have to say all of the improvements they made have really gotten me excited. Diplomacy is a far more important ability now, specifically you can get bonuses and items with it, and the featured mission are awesome. Speaking of which I think I will go off and fight in a Romulan arena with those Vulcan staffs while the classic battle music playing in the background.
What the heck is the person on the right doing?
Either he/she/it is calibrating the warp relays, or is trying to DJ for the whole bridge crew.
That picture reminded me about how much this game doesn’t look like Star Trek.
