LP: Silent Hill, Shattered Memories – Part 15, 10.0 out of 10 based on 2 ratings

Shattered Memories finally draws to a close! What does it all mean? Where has Cheryl been all this time? Find out! (P.S: May be considered a little more “adult” than the previous installments)

Note: I know that I said at the end of the video that I’ll be doing more LP’s, and I still plan to, but shortly after recording the video, I got slammed with overtime at work. I’ve decided to spend what little free time I have left on the Game Den and Film Den for awhile. But once work calms down again, the LP’s will be back.

I loved this LP so much. It was so addictive and I guess it helps that I love this game and the story. I have played this game around four times but it was interesting that I heard some dialogue in this LP that I have never heard during my own playthroughs.

The first time I saw the ending of this game I was just shocked and couldn’t believe it at all. Thanks again for the great LP and I hope you do make more LP’s in the future.

First of all, thanks for the entertaining LP. I’ve already played through this game twice, but it was fun to put on and listen to while I struggled through my last couple weeks of finals. No time to play video games, so I have to play them vicariously through LP’s right now. Haha, how sad.

My first play through was a little disappointing for me, mainly I think because of the kind of marketing they used for Shattered Memories. They really hyped up the psychological profiling and the “personal” aspects of the game, especially the monsters and how they would change in response to your profile. From the way they talked about it, I expected my monsters would turn into clown headed spider demons skittering after me while they made that “Grudge croak” noise. Instead they got, like, I think holes in their heads. Hm. That and the fact that you nothing bad happens in the “real” world totally cut down on the tension that was so thick in games like SH2.

The thing that really changed my mind, and I didn’t hear you talk about it too much so I want to get your take on it, was the mementos. Initially I was so confused about them because at first it just seemed like a collecting side quest. But after searching and reading some stuff about them I realized that was extremely layered symbolism, especially in light of the ending. Once I got what those were, and all the “hauntings” and phone messages start to kind of coalesce into that one overarching story. And that, is brilliant. I love games like that. Love love love. So I adore this game now, and it was fun to see all the different messages and conversations your game went through compared to what I had already seen.

But before this goes on forever, mementos? I think you can dissect everything about them, including the object, the description, the location they’re found, and the phone messages you get around them. Did you already get that? I couldn’t tell because you were being very good about not spoiling the ending. But if you didn’t, I didn’t want you to miss out on them. There doesn’t seem to be a really comprehensive break down of the symbolism online yet, and I think it’s because there’s so much up for discussion. Thoughts?

aah, after playing good old Fahrenheit (which was censored and released in US as “Indigo Prophecy”) this failure of interactive movie (just can’t call it a “game”) is… unsettling. i freaking _love_ Silent Hill and i played all SHs on PC (which are 1-4 and Homecoming) but even stupid-ass Homecoming is more of the game than this.
damn, i’ve got “Love Lost” ending in my playthrough on PSP (yeah, on PSP, and with same graphics… and glitches :) and the only difference in credits “analysis” was that “subject is boring”. not “interesting” but “boring” and overwise the same as here even though my characters were looking different and acting different in cutscenes (yeah, i watched all endings online and read other end texts). lazy and cheap.
Dena, relax, as shitty internet “tests” don’t mean a thing (any thing, connected with reality, that is) so as “analysis” in that “game”.

make yourself a favor and better play some “Fahrenheit”, uncut european version, if you lust for good interactive experience or “Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth”, for some nice, inventive horror. both are not too old.

PS: and Dena, you realize there is a “zoom out” button on the map screen, right ?

this game definitely gave me hope for the franchise as well =3 i didn’t think you would get that ending…
i’m looking forward to the Silent Hill coming up as well

ugh i was also reminded of when you had to row to the hotel in SH2 X_x i totally didn’t know i was supposed to go towards the lighthouse and i was rowing for literally 10 minutes before i thought “uuuhhh… i’m doing something wrong” and then felt so stupid when i checked the faq…

Great LP, but not the ending I expected.

At first I thought they were gonna be way to on the nose about the Jacob’s Ladder inclination Silent Hill has always had but they twisted it in a different way (which was fine). I didn’t like the drunk dad thing, though. Seemed to quick.

This is my problem with games that have multiple endings. The ending tends to be really quick, and doesn’t give you much time for closure.

It could be the ending you got (as I recall, one or two of the Original Deus Ex endings had that problem) because of how you played but a lot of it felt forced to me.

I don’t know. I still don’t wholly like this whole “re-imagining” of Silent Hill, and even though this game is very clever and hits certain beats from Silent Hill that I love (psychologically stringing the plot together being a major thing) I still have some issues with this game.

I will say this, having not played this one only seen your let’s play; this is still better than Silent Hill Homecoming (which I did play).

I believe by looking at this whole game that this isn’t just cheryl going through a journey of finding herself and the truth this is also a journey for harry to redeem himself to her and him

    Poor guy
I believe they both went through this together it is wonderful story had me crying in the end

The big twist doesnt sit well with me. Dont get me wrong, its not the twist itself that bothers me, its the delivery. The build up was great, but then mere moments before the big reveal, they completely give it away. So when Harry walks in the room the reaction isnt really *gasp* “wait….what?!?!” its “Oh, yeah see? I was right.” Thats a real shame too because everything else worked so well.

In anycase, great LP and as always I look forward to seeing your next project.

I liked watching this even though I’ve finished the game myself, just to see another version of the game and its characters. I thought you were going to get the Drunk Dad ending, since you get the green jacket if you’re heading in that direction. I got the good ending when I played, but my favorite bad ending in the game is the Wicked and Weak ending, just because it shows Harry being slapped around by Dahlia rather than the other way around. It’s just something you don’t often see in fiction, or acknowledged much at all, really. I can believe most domestic violence is caused by straight men, but they can’t be the only ones.

Well I did like this game, it’s my least favorite in the series.

I didn’t think I’d miss the combat before I played the game, but it turns out I did. Well plus I didn’t find the game scary, or creepy at all.

Hopefully Downpour will bring back the creepiness.

Great job on the lets play.

Holy shit, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn was singing that song? She’s one of my favorite voice actresses. That said, I really enjoyed this let’s play. It was fun watching Harry go through Silent Hill, and I definitely didn’t see that ending coming till the doctor started being more specific with his pronouns.

The reason why you don’t remember giving these kind of answers, is because the game doesn’t only uses what you answer at the psychologist but also what you actually do during the game. So this is where it gets the information.
I tried the PS2 Version now, and I still think the Wii controlls fit the game much better. Nevertheless it was a Great Let’s Play as usual, and I hope you will make a Resident Evil Let’s Play at some point again, maybe the Gamecube version?

P.S. It’s a shame you didn’t call the Konami Hotline, this is one of the funniest things in the game!

Shyamalan would be distressed to find a twist more emotionally effective than his own. The game looks really great and a nice addition to the Silent Hill name, and this was a great LP. Hope to see more content!

Ah! The drunken dad ending. How sad to see Harry like that. You should play it again for the UFO ending. It’s worth it and those text messages you get for each UFO get’s more and more disturbing.

I love how there’s two parts of the ending that can vary based on your choices and how you behave. I hope they continue that with future games. Maybe they could divide it into three or four sections, for a more variable outcome.
Also, this may be the first LP that’s ever convinced me to buy a game. In fact, I actually got the game when you were about halfway through.

There are about 4 different endings (not including UFO)–I think only one could be called good. Haven’t seen it myself yet, but I believe it’s called “Love Lost”.

The other one I got was “The Wicked and the Weak” where Harry was very passive and general failure at life and we see his wife smacking him around. It was pretty hard to watch.

Technically there are Seven, I believe. Three in the Doctor’s office (Of which this one was the worst) the one I got is a really nice and touching one on him and Cheryl having a conversation and him telling her it wasn’t her fault and that he’d always be there for her in spirit. And then, there are the other four, with yeah Love Lost being the best of them about the day Harry moves out but making it clear to Cheryl they still love her even if they don’t love each other anymore.

I really do hope this team does another game, becuase they are good story tellers and future games could really improve the game mechanics that are really the worst part of the game.

I’d have to disagree a bit. This one is the ‘middle ground’ ending for the Doctor’s Office. The “Worst” from the game’s perspective, is if you rack up too much Fake PI, and instead of accepting that Harry is dead, Cheryl keeps going right on being stuck in her delusion that Harry is still alive.

The other ending, which hasn’t been mentioned here yet, but Dena did mention in the earlier videos, is the “man-whore” ending, and is the only other scene in the game that Lisa is in.

The Phone call you get from Cheryl near the end of the game in the sewers is a great indicator of what ending you get. if Cheryl wants you to leave her alone, you’re getting either the Drunk Dad Ending or the Wicked and Weak Ending after the Doctor’s Office ending. If you Cheryl wants you to come and be with her, you’re getting the Fake/Denial Ending in the Office, and the Weak and Wicked or Man-Whore Ending. If Cheryl wants you to flee because it’s dangerous, you’re going to get the Good Ending in the Office, and the Love Lost ending after the Office.

If you want to get the Man-Whore ending, which is rather darkly funny, just stare at every sexy poster and mannequin, look at the female characters’ chests and butts, and, the biggest quantity of all, watch Lisa as she undresses in her apt.

As for the Drunk Dad ending, it’s easy. Just stare at booze every chance you get. It doesn’t take much. Just looking at the booze in the Doctor’s office will do, plus once or twice in the game.

As for the Wicked and Weak ending, just be a jerk and/or a coward every chance you get. Too much gets you the Fake ending, though.

Personally I think this game works best BECAUSE it uses the SH1 characters, purely because even though we know it’s a re-imagining we still have automatic assumptions based on what we know about these characters (EG, we expect Harry to be the hero, Dhalia to be an insane cultist and Cheryl to be….Whatever Cheryl was in the first game) and the changes made to these characters make the game far more interesting…

I also love the Raw-Shocks, purely for the idea. It would be a perfect Silent Hill game if the monsters conformed to our own fears and emotions, I just wish it was given more depth in this version and I seriously hope they use it again.
