MvC3 Grudge Match & Angry Review
Angry Joe Versus Nostalgia Critic the Final Grudge Match! Only one man can be Champion. Place your bets!
Posted By Birdman about 1 year, 2 months ago

Today is for true believers and those on the fighter’s edge. It’s legacy, it’s legend and it’s the dawn of a new age. It’s Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. But sometimes with a title so long awaited it’s not safe (or smart) to review alone. With Birdman comes Marc [the Engineer], a challenger to his perspective.
On the docket is a quick look back on the Vs. series, where it (and its experience) came from and where it’s going. Under a microscope will go the new control system, the sound, the look and feel, and all the subtle nuances. In the end, how will the scales balance between the hardcore who wanted this game and the casual who have yet to become real fans of the series?
And most importantly, after a decade’s waiting and the deafening roar of fan demand, can this game live up to the hype and carry on the legacy, or will the buck stop here?

Mike Dodd is the guy who always said video games could be turned into a profession and eventually it turned out he was right. Mike is a passionate nerd about all facets of nerd culture from the love of the BBC’s Doctor Who to the very latest in the fight game scene, he’s on to it and likely turned into his new obsession. Dodd was raised to love all things that were pop culture from viewing his first horror movie at five years old to owning one of the first Nintendos in North America, it’s been a childhood dominated by the controller and movie screens and he couldn’t be happier. Roleplaying games such as Dungeons and Dragons dominated the high school years and unhealthy doses of Japanese anime were frequent as he completed his education and took sometime off to explore Canada and the US. However as all good times must come to an end, a decision was made to get some experience and do something fun and learn something and meant getting involved in the media. Mike volunteered with Rogers Television and became the audio/technical director for several successful programs and decided that he should further that experience by going to college. 4 years and several massive headaches later, Mike became known as “The Birdman” of This week in Geek but that is a story for another website….

Having no intentions to cover Marvel vs Capcom 3, I drunkenly stumbled into a GameStop on Friday and exited with the game and a fight stick! Guess I’ll review it!
For the record, Viewtiful Joe is a cheap S.O.B.
Balance, good game play mechanics, and a good roster. These three can combine into a great fighting game. Did they combine to make Marvel vs Capcom 3? Well, see for yourself!

For fighting game fans, comic book junkies, and what seems like pop culture fans the world over, Marvel vs Capcom 3 has been a long time comin’ (he says, using the apostrophe for a combo-breaker cliche!). And in that long time there have been more than a few changes, not only to the people waiting for a sequel (I’m an uncle now!), but to the companies they’ve been waiting for. Marvel has been bought out by Disney and switched direction more than a little since last time they teamed up with Capcom (for starters, Brian Bendis writes everything now!?). Meanwhile, the Japanese developer has expanded their roster of stars quite considerably, adding many more relatively new faces to the supposed ‘classics’ department. And more importantly, they’ve made the bold decision to approach their new over-the-top brawler with a different control scheme in mind. To that end, both media giants have brought a rather odd list of personalities to a rather different entry in the arcade-fighter universe. After spending a considerable amount of time with this band of heroes and misfits, I’m here to tell you if MvC3 deserves a lot of your time, or if it’s likely to cause a Civil War (warning: jokes will contain Marvel and Capcom references).
| PROS | Possibly the best-looking beat ‘em up ever, doesn’t take itself seriously, new refined controls really work. |
| CONS | Requires a lot of practice, online mode is frustrating, infinite combos already found. |
| WTF?! | Zero and Tron Bonne made it in, but Mega Man didn’t? |
Marvel and Capcom’s worlds have been thrust together by their most evil residents, Dr Doom and Albert Wesker. This diabolical scheme to conquer both worlds has lead to pissing off something far larger than themselves. Larger AND wearing pink – the most evil of colors! Somehow it is up to the heroes and villains of these two worlds to stop the world devourer and save humanity/whatever lives in their world from destruction. Does the game need any more to its plot than this? Does someone need to explain how Ryu and Amaratsu are actually from one world? Not really, and thankfully the game doesn’t. Apart from some unlockable character bios and endings, there is very little to distract from the main spectacle of beating the living crap out of famous icons.
With a smaller list of characters than the previous title, MvC3 hosts a respectable 36 characters, 18 from each side. While all of the cast are faces most should recognize, there are many obvious omissions from the selection page. I can understand that characters like Cable and Venom have had their heyday and in fact have gone through several reboots since the last installment in this series, but some of the bigger names have also left the building. Mega Man, Cyclops and Ken Masters are left out of the action despite their popularity within their respective markets. Hell, Cyclops has even stopped being a boring character over the last few years and still this wasn’t enough to keep him in.
With a shortened list and many of the big names taken out, it’s even more surprising to see some lesser known characters take the stage. Zero and Tron Bonne both make it in (even though the main character from their series is MIA), the widely unknown Task Master makes an appearance as an unlockable character and even Hsien-ko from the immortal Dark Stalkers series even made it into the final line-up. Many players will spend the next few months complaining about the current roster, but once you get past the disappointment/surprise you discover that what is here is pretty interesting varied choice of fighters. With the expectation of Akuma and Ryu, it’s heartwarming to see a Capcom fighter devoid of clones (which I am sure Spider-Man is glad for).
Ironically it will be players coming from Tatsunoko vs. Capcom that will feel at home with MvC3′s control scheme and not the vast legions of Street Fighter 4 competitors. Foregoing the classic 2 punches and 2 kicks, MvC3 instead gives players 3 different strengths of attack and a launchers/team combo button. This means that players can use any of the face buttons for their special moves, but interestingly each strength will result in often completely different results. Rather than simplifying things, this actually results in making move lists far more complicated in depth, while at the same time making the game more open to newcomers.
It should also be mentioned that there is an option to use simplified controls, which allow lesser skilled players to compete with those with more experience. These simple controls allow for some of the much harder combinations to be activated with a single button combination, but at the same time do not allow for the more complex combos. Players should be aware that this is not a substitute for the main controls, but an option for those who are less experienced or knowingly poor at fighting games. If you start on this control scheme it will be much harder for you to transfer anything you have learned into the main game.
Anyone suddenly panicking like some sort of Dark Reign has befallen the series, worry not. From team assists to team hyper combos return in their entirety, even if the tag system is a bit clumsier. Players now have to hold the assist button relevant to the character they wish to swap with to leave the arena which feels a bit slower than the previous game, but everyone suffers from the same problem so it’s not a huge hang-up. However, there are now other ways to tag in your characters. During an air combo, using the launcher button (A or X, depending on your console) and a direction will send your opponent flying into your next partner in an instant swap. However, be aware that if your opponent sees this move coming, it can be countered. Overall the gameplay feels incredibly similar, despite its differences from the previous games. Instead of coming across as an overhaul, the changes feel more like tweaks. A personal high five to the new advancing guard maneuver that feels a little like a parry system in a previous Capcom fighter.
Instead of going for the obvious choice of using the SF4 engine to produce this game, the developers decided to build this one from the ground up using the MT Framework which Lost Planet 2 and Resident Evil 5 were created on. While I have very few kind words towards these two games, I cannot deny that they both were visually stunning. Both of these games, however, are completely out-classed by the graphical joy that MvC3 displays every second. Using 3D models was a bold step when trying to mix two very different worlds together, but somehow Capcom has created something beautiful. Every character and level oozes personality and style, capturing both companies’ franchises perfectly. A couple more levels would have been nice, especially from Capcom. Marvel’s levels feel very vibrant and memorable, while the Capcom levels feel rather plain. It wouldn’t be too much to ask for a SF level with characters in the background, but unfortunately I imagine that Capcom are reserving their cast for possible DLC.

Galactus is wearing purple, not pink. I always wondered why people mistake purple for pink.
That aside, I found this as a fun and irritating game. Though my main grudge with this and alot of fighters is the blocking guard… it gets so annoying how the AI blocks EVERYTHING.
“Also there are no actual infinites”
O RLY? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Rfci2YN38M
This combo was the one that came to mind when talking about infinite loops sometimes not needing prerequisites.
I agree that it is more loops than the combo madness that was going on in mvс2 but this is only the beginning and in the future will be worse))And again it’s very fair Review, keep up the good work!)
I don’t know what you’re talking about with the whole balance thing. Sure, Storm and Sentinel seem really good, but there are no really bad characters from what I’ve seen, and so far it looks like the balance is vastly improved over other VS games. And why would it be released in arcades first? Only Americans really play Marvel, and there are essentially no arcades left in the US anymore. Not to mention that the whole process of balancing through arcades has already happened through the numerous fight clubs, explaining why the balance is pretty spot on compared to other VS games. Also there are no actual infinites in the game because of how the hit stun works. Sure you can loop things a few times and even a little more with X-factor, but that’s the kind of advantage that level-3 X-factor is there for, and you won’t be able to continue the loop once its gone. I have to agree with the online issues though, can’t wait until that gets fixed. Shouldn’t be long now from what Capcom has been saying.
8 score for this game is ideal.MVC 3 is little better than soulless MVC2(no story and endings at all, just big amount of unbalanced characters) but little worst than more classic MVC1 and TVC(funny endings, great characters, more balanced gameplay, and not cut three-button controls)
Angry Joe Versus Nostalgia Critic the Final Grudge Match! Only one man can be Champion. Place your bets!
Having no intentions to cover Marvel vs Capcom 3, I drunkenly stumbled into a GameStop on Friday and exited with the game and a fight stick! Guess I’ll review it!

Balance, good game play mechanics, and a good roster. These three can combine into a great fighting game. Did they combine to make Marvel vs Capcom 3? Well, see for yourself!
We’re going to take you for a new ride where we go for broke! Birdman and his tag team partner, the Engineer give you the low down on Marvel vs Capcom 3:FTW!
I disagree with the whole too easy to play thing, fighting games arn’t as popular as they could be for 1 reason above all others, accessability.
To play fighting games at high level normally requires knowing a character inside out, quick reflexes and a quick ability to anaylse situations and make judgements to create mindgames. So why then do we need the extra dynamic of having to practise to death to even do the basics?
Making the basics easier has a similar effect to how fps games draw people in, it fools new players into making them think the games are easier then they actually are, don’t tell me it doesn’t work because if it’s thats the case, tell me then why fps games have become so damn popular?
I certainly loved Marvel vs Capcom 3, although I suppose I loved Tatsunoko vs Capcom as well.
That being said, I’m certainly not new to Fighting Games, I’ve been playing Fighters since Marvel vs Capcom 2, which brought me to previous ones. MvC3 is currently my favorite, but out of the more ‘hardcore’ titles, I love Darkstalkers 3 (and I really want to see a Darkstalkers IV) and I also play alot of Street Fighter, BlazBlue, Guilty Gear, and SoulCalibur games.
Oh, and in regards to DLC already on the disc, thats partially true. While Jill Valentine has been found on-disc with a completed moveset, she seems unbalanced, for instance, her machine gun hyper is laughably weak, and she’s missing some voice clips for switch outs and other things or her voice clips, such as her Win Quotes, are extremely quiet. As for Frank West and Doctor Octopus being on the disc, they’re only there partially, such as in name and parts of their movesets, like Frank’s Zombies and Doc Ock’s Tentacles.
As for the already on-disc DLC, the announced DLC costumes are also on there as well as more.we have to pay to unlock content already on the disc and reeks of Capcom shenanigans.
A lot of the complaints of this game is VERY similar to what people complained about Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Take a look at some of the OLD posts about MvC2 on SRK. People yelled at changing the control scheme on MvC2 from 6 attack buttons to 4 buttons. A lot of people thought Iceman is broken (no chip damage!). Sometimes nostalgia is blinding.
I agree with a lot of this review, just not everything. The heart and respect to the source material is downright perfect. Sound, music, etc. It’s borderline brilliant.
Netcode is alright. Matchmaking is broken, 4-5 minutes to find a ranked match is horrible. Lack of spectator mode is down right bullshit and drags this game down.
On the gameplay technical aspects, I disagree strongly.
The controls scheme is fine. Yes it’s different but shouldn’t take long to get used to. I find it to be much more streamlined. With so many characters, it’s so nice that I don’t have to remember each characters launcher so the S button. It’s a welcome addition to memorizing the launcher button for each character. In fact, the button isn’t really new but just a hard(est) attack button with a few extra features. Calling it just a launcher button is quite wrong as it has other uses (ie Storm’s little electric dash is S+L, Viper’s focus attack is S+L, in the air causes Morgan’s air drill attack). While kids and newcomers may abuse the S button, using it without thinking and whiffing the attack leaves you open to getting your ass kicked. The game makes you WANT to press buttons which is often the reason most people lose. They forget that blocking is also a skill that takes as much time to learn as it was important in MvC2 (and in every fighting game really). There is a control scheme that sort of mirrors the old style MvC2 but a lot of big MvC2 players (Yipes, Clock0work, etc) have said that the default one for arcade sticks (which is the b style in control settings) is just fine.
Now about XFactor. First off, comeback mechanics, revolutionized by the great SSF2 series, are not going anywhere. Some people love em, some people hate em. I’ll try to explain why people are perhaps looking at XFactor in the wrong light using SSF4 as an example.
Chun Li vs. Ryu match up.
Chun Li has two ultras, one is a kick thing (Ultra 1) and the other is like a giant non-moving fireball (Her Ultra 2, which she has it in MvC3). In this match up, a Chun player would use Ultra 1. Why? The properties of her Ultra 1. A good Ryu player would know the minute the Chun player has Ultra 1 available to them, that Ryu’s fireball game is shut down because Chun’s Ultra 1 has invincibility at the beginning of the ultra. This allows Chun to effectively go THROUGH Ryu’s fireball (with proper timing), allowing the Ultra to hit for full damage. The Ryu player has to now adjust his game to accommodate the risk of throwing fireballs.
Now how the hell is this related to XFactor? Keyword in the example above is “adjust”. XFactor changes different properties for each characters along with the number characters you have left (as mentioned in the review). XFactor also grants the player ONE cancel, either during a hyper or while in blockstring, in hopes to attack back and do some damage. If you know the player has XFactor available to them, you should adjust your game accordingly. The player(s)with Xfactor have options, use it early to try and take out a character as soon as possible or save it for that last minute comeback. How do you deal with someone who activates Xfactor also depends on what tools you have? Run away, plan an attack (this actually catches people off guard), block (advancing guard is your friend), or if you have it, XFactor yourself. As mentioned, XFactor restores your life but it also prevents chip damage from the duration of the XFactor. While XFactor on the surface might seem like a “Super Saiyan” button, it often causes players to be reckless (ie press buttons) which can easily get yourself killed. XFactor is just an aspect of MvC3 that players will have to learn how to properly use and fight against.
Any complaints about XFactor and I hear “I didn’t win because I didn’t play good enough”. Not a fan of the blame game. I hear the same thing when people complain about Ultras/Supers/Any comeback mechanic.
It’s hard to really review MvC3. It has been out to the public for not even a week and a bit more from other channels. MvC2 has been out for nearly 10 years and has a huge following. In fact, I hate playing MvC2 because I find it broken and trash (LOL, I know, go figure). Capcom got lucky with it. That’s all. MvC3 is extremely well done from a gameplay standpoint and I think it’ll take quite some time to open up and dechiper.
This is not Smash Brothers. If you think so, take a look at the SRK Guide or the monster 397 page Bradyguide and this game will make your brain explode by how deep this game is. It’s really for both the casual and hardcore. Easy to pick up, insanely crazy to get awesome.
A part of me still prefers the classical Street Fighter/Darkstalkers games but this is still overly fun. Once they fix the online aspects, the game will be a must buy.
Worst part about MvC3? Going back to SSF4 and trying to dash with two buttons.

Im liking this game. Mvc2 is always gonna be a classic and this game is very different, but still its a heck of a lot of fun. I think they need to nerf sentinel’s damage a bit though
I am hoping to see more balancing and other things fixed via patch soon
This game is good but has potential to be great if they were to fix up a few small issues
Long time listener, first time commenter, I would like to say that I think that accessibility for others ain’t necessarily a bad thing, especially if old MvsC2 players (like myself) are out there and a bunch of new folks are coming in. Hate to be linking to other videos from other websites, but this video here from the escapist (slightly past the 2 minute mark) can give everybody some good insight on accessibility within games and why it’s not such a bad thing: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/extra-credits/2738-Playing-Like-a-Designer-Part-2
Other than that, I’m still a big fan of your work and I’ll continue to listen to your show. Just wanted to throw that link out there, some food for thought really.
Question: why is it a bad thing to change things for a sequel? If they had just remade MvC2 again, would you be happier, or would you say “why did it take 10 years for a graphics update?”
I understand that we’ve been learning how to optimize the use of that one control scheme for years and years and years, but why is it a bad thing to force people to learn new controls in a new game?
EDIT: I know that I’m going to get flamed for the opinion that it’s a good thing to have novelty in a sequel, but I’m being serious here.
You have a very valid point Mr Skippy.
I certainly won’t flame you for that.
I would hope they implement a “legacy” control scheme for us old school players
It isn’t a bad thing to have people learn a new control scheme at all
For a time it puts on a level playing field in terms of the new learning curve.
However with the new systems in place it changes the game up and I believe Justin Wong said this in a tweet earlier this week
“”its not bad that its easy to learn, its just TOO EASY i think and consistency is hard to tell sadly….”

good review, Its definitly one of the funnest games I’ve ever played. my favorites to use are dante, cap, zero, felicia, chris, ironman, wesker, thor, wolverine, and x-23, wow thats a lot, but I like to switch things up and not use the same team all the time.
Sounds like MvC3 is going to be the Smash Bros Brawl of the series.
Welcome to the club.
I would want to challenge you to a duel in MvC3, but I have a feeling I’d be annihilated
.
I”m always open to challengers
I have it on both systems so
BirdmanTWIG on XBox Live
and
BirdmanDodd on PSN
Podcaster Game Guru vs. Podcaster Newbie… this should be interesting
.
Nice review guys. I wouldn’t say I’m casual at fighters, but I’m certainly not pro.
I will be buying this game eventually, but I’m going until the price drops.
Great review Mike! Although I did find you were a little unclear on whether a casual game like me who isn’t into the whole pro-fighting scene would get into it alot, you only really mentioned the simple control scheme option but not if someone who doesn’t often play fighter games would get into it, I have Street Fighter IV and enjoyed that so I’m gonna pick this up tomorrow, but maybe you could be a bit more clearer in future reviews on that, more so in fighter games you review
I’ll admit that the boundaries of this review are a little loose. Listening to it again, it’s Birdman and myself listing the good and the bad but offering no clear verdict because we genuinely feel this game is in the gray area for a lot of reasons. Our opinion as a part of the hardcore audience may differ from the hardcore at large and what we think the casual may think about it for the first time may differ from they’ll actually think
That said, for the casual gamer who has laid hands on a Street Fighter game before I’d recommend it for the fact that at the baseline, MvC3 is stupid fun. For everyone else, the casual and hardcore alike, I would recommend to be cautious (rent it) and maybe play the first time with a friend(s) if only because when left to the single player, the game CAN fall very flat for some is a complete miss for others which puts a rue on the overall experience.
Stay groovy,

Marc pretty much summed it up exactly.
Give it a rent and if you still dig it after 3 days or so then its likely worth a buy.
Its not the fighting game that I wanted but I think I came at it from a different perspective then most people.
I suggets starting with this.
The simplicity of the controls in comparison to pretty much ever other Capcom fighter is huge-
10 matches so far from 6 different people have gone to the corner and spammed Hulk’s ground smash. So annoying and if I leave I will have to verse ragequitters.
Best ending is Taskmaster’s one he opens up a gym. Also Doc Ock and Frank West are on the disc DAMN CAPCOM is gonna make us pay for them DAMN THEM TO HELL.
Doc Ock and Frank West are on your disc?! Ooooooooh man, that may mean they are dlc in the future? Who know!
But anyway, matchmaking in this game is a lot better than in Street Fighter IV, but online can still be ridiculous. I’ve fought 4 people so far with the teams of Ryu, Iron Man, Wolverine, Akuma, or Dante. Yawn.
The less hardcore part is great for me cuz hell I can barely get though arcade mode in MvC2 on easy sometimes. Don’t get me wrong I very much in joy MvC2 but I think not getting my butt handed to me on anything above easy is a good thing. Don’t even get me on how impossible I find Street Fighter. Only reason I’m getting 3d SF4 is because I’ll be able to pull off at least some super and ult moves thanks to the touch button thing they have on there.
I just wish that Amazon would finally ship it instead of it just being ‘Shipping Soon’
