Balance, good game play mechanics, and a good roster. These three can combine into a great fighting game. Did they combine to make Marvel vs Capcom 3? Well, see for yourself!
Note: The listing of the plot in the Wikipedia article is actually in the booklet in the game. Maybe I should actually read the instruction manual sometimes, eh?

Having no intentions to cover Marvel vs Capcom 3, I drunkenly stumbled into a GameStop on Friday and exited with the game and a fight stick! Guess I’ll review it!
For the record, Viewtiful Joe is a cheap S.O.B.

For fighting game fans, comic book junkies, and what seems like pop culture fans the world over, Marvel vs Capcom 3 has been a long time comin’ (he says, using the apostrophe for a combo-breaker cliche!). And in that long time there have been more than a few changes, not only to the people waiting for a sequel (I’m an uncle now!), but to the companies they’ve been waiting for. Marvel has been bought out by Disney and switched direction more than a little since last time they teamed up with Capcom (for starters, Brian Bendis writes everything now!?). Meanwhile, the Japanese developer has expanded their roster of stars quite considerably, adding many more relatively new faces to the supposed ‘classics’ department. And more importantly, they’ve made the bold decision to approach their new over-the-top brawler with a different control scheme in mind. To that end, both media giants have brought a rather odd list of personalities to a rather different entry in the arcade-fighter universe. After spending a considerable amount of time with this band of heroes and misfits, I’m here to tell you if MvC3 deserves a lot of your time, or if it’s likely to cause a Civil War (warning: jokes will contain Marvel and Capcom references).
| PROS | Possibly the best-looking beat ‘em up ever, doesn’t take itself seriously, new refined controls really work. |
| CONS | Requires a lot of practice, online mode is frustrating, infinite combos already found. |
| WTF?! | Zero and Tron Bonne made it in, but Mega Man didn’t? |
Marvel and Capcom’s worlds have been thrust together by their most evil residents, Dr Doom and Albert Wesker. This diabolical scheme to conquer both worlds has lead to pissing off something far larger than themselves. Larger AND wearing pink – the most evil of colors! Somehow it is up to the heroes and villains of these two worlds to stop the world devourer and save humanity/whatever lives in their world from destruction. Does the game need any more to its plot than this? Does someone need to explain how Ryu and Amaratsu are actually from one world? Not really, and thankfully the game doesn’t. Apart from some unlockable character bios and endings, there is very little to distract from the main spectacle of beating the living crap out of famous icons.
With a smaller list of characters than the previous title, MvC3 hosts a respectable 36 characters, 18 from each side. While all of the cast are faces most should recognize, there are many obvious omissions from the selection page. I can understand that characters like Cable and Venom have had their heyday and in fact have gone through several reboots since the last installment in this series, but some of the bigger names have also left the building. Mega Man, Cyclops and Ken Masters are left out of the action despite their popularity within their respective markets. Hell, Cyclops has even stopped being a boring character over the last few years and still this wasn’t enough to keep him in.
With a shortened list and many of the big names taken out, it’s even more surprising to see some lesser known characters take the stage. Zero and Tron Bonne both make it in (even though the main character from their series is MIA), the widely unknown Task Master makes an appearance as an unlockable character and even Hsien-ko from the immortal Dark Stalkers series even made it into the final line-up. Many players will spend the next few months complaining about the current roster, but once you get past the disappointment/surprise you discover that what is here is pretty interesting varied choice of fighters. With the expectation of Akuma and Ryu, it’s heartwarming to see a Capcom fighter devoid of clones (which I am sure Spider-Man is glad for).
Ironically it will be players coming from Tatsunoko vs. Capcom that will feel at home with MvC3′s control scheme and not the vast legions of Street Fighter 4 competitors. Foregoing the classic 2 punches and 2 kicks, MvC3 instead gives players 3 different strengths of attack and a launchers/team combo button. This means that players can use any of the face buttons for their special moves, but interestingly each strength will result in often completely different results. Rather than simplifying things, this actually results in making move lists far more complicated in depth, while at the same time making the game more open to newcomers.
It should also be mentioned that there is an option to use simplified controls, which allow lesser skilled players to compete with those with more experience. These simple controls allow for some of the much harder combinations to be activated with a single button combination, but at the same time do not allow for the more complex combos. Players should be aware that this is not a substitute for the main controls, but an option for those who are less experienced or knowingly poor at fighting games. If you start on this control scheme it will be much harder for you to transfer anything you have learned into the main game.
Anyone suddenly panicking like some sort of Dark Reign has befallen the series, worry not. From team assists to team hyper combos return in their entirety, even if the tag system is a bit clumsier. Players now have to hold the assist button relevant to the character they wish to swap with to leave the arena which feels a bit slower than the previous game, but everyone suffers from the same problem so it’s not a huge hang-up. However, there are now other ways to tag in your characters. During an air combo, using the launcher button (A or X, depending on your console) and a direction will send your opponent flying into your next partner in an instant swap. However, be aware that if your opponent sees this move coming, it can be countered. Overall the gameplay feels incredibly similar, despite its differences from the previous games. Instead of coming across as an overhaul, the changes feel more like tweaks. A personal high five to the new advancing guard maneuver that feels a little like a parry system in a previous Capcom fighter.
Instead of going for the obvious choice of using the SF4 engine to produce this game, the developers decided to build this one from the ground up using the MT Framework which Lost Planet 2 and Resident Evil 5 were created on. While I have very few kind words towards these two games, I cannot deny that they both were visually stunning. Both of these games, however, are completely out-classed by the graphical joy that MvC3 displays every second. Using 3D models was a bold step when trying to mix two very different worlds together, but somehow Capcom has created something beautiful. Every character and level oozes personality and style, capturing both companies’ franchises perfectly. A couple more levels would have been nice, especially from Capcom. Marvel’s levels feel very vibrant and memorable, while the Capcom levels feel rather plain. It wouldn’t be too much to ask for a SF level with characters in the background, but unfortunately I imagine that Capcom are reserving their cast for possible DLC.

Galactus is wearing purple, not pink. I always wondered why people mistake purple for pink.
That aside, I found this as a fun and irritating game. Though my main grudge with this and alot of fighters is the blocking guard… it gets so annoying how the AI blocks EVERYTHING.
“Also there are no actual infinites”
O RLY? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Rfci2YN38M
This combo was the one that came to mind when talking about infinite loops sometimes not needing prerequisites.
I agree that it is more loops than the combo madness that was going on in mvс2 but this is only the beginning and in the future will be worse))And again it’s very fair Review, keep up the good work!)
I don’t know what you’re talking about with the whole balance thing. Sure, Storm and Sentinel seem really good, but there are no really bad characters from what I’ve seen, and so far it looks like the balance is vastly improved over other VS games. And why would it be released in arcades first? Only Americans really play Marvel, and there are essentially no arcades left in the US anymore. Not to mention that the whole process of balancing through arcades has already happened through the numerous fight clubs, explaining why the balance is pretty spot on compared to other VS games. Also there are no actual infinites in the game because of how the hit stun works. Sure you can loop things a few times and even a little more with X-factor, but that’s the kind of advantage that level-3 X-factor is there for, and you won’t be able to continue the loop once its gone. I have to agree with the online issues though, can’t wait until that gets fixed. Shouldn’t be long now from what Capcom has been saying.
8 score for this game is ideal.MVC 3 is little better than soulless MVC2(no story and endings at all, just big amount of unbalanced characters) but little worst than more classic MVC1 and TVC(funny endings, great characters, more balanced gameplay, and not cut three-button controls)

Having no intentions to cover Marvel vs Capcom 3, I drunkenly stumbled into a GameStop on Friday and exited with the game and a fight stick! Guess I’ll review it!

…What kind of god forsaken moron would actually like this? The game was terrible! so many things, like SPECTATOR MODE, missing! A weak roster (No megaman, Venom, or Zangief?). The game fucking sucks online too. cant hook to ANYONE.
So now that they’ve patched this game the online is unplayable (for me anyway) on ps3. So much lag
Sadface
It’s funny, you can totally tell the difference between someone who likes and plays Fighters (Hopewithinchaos) and someone who doesn’t play them and doesn’t care for them that much (me), by the differences in our reviews
Oh and not to be a douchey mcnitpick, but there was crossover fighting games before the versus series. Called king of fighters
I never said that Marvel vs Capcom was the first crossover game. hell, Ehrgeiz was before it, king of fighters (mixing fatal fury, art of fighting, samurai shodown). hell, King of fighters is my favorite fighting game franchise, so trust me, im aware MVC wasnt first.
what i was saying is while there was King of fighters, Capcom vs SNK, etc. Marvel vs Capcom was the really big name crossover.
Whys everyone talking about the story of the game? Who cares. Its a fighting game. You play it versus other human opponents. People should play an rpg if they want a deep story
Also, I guess im just lucky? I never had any problems with the online except failing to join ranked matches sometimes, and maybe one time I played it was very laggy. Otherwise It was fine with the minor bit of lag online thats to be expected in fighting games. Luckily though I have people to play with offline, how the games ment to be played anyway
spectating will be updated as a DLC so they can make money, which is just stupid to begin with and I hated being in he lobby the one time I was online. I didn’t even know there was a story to the game because it’s was never advertised or anything. At least in the past it was clear on the story mode.
The netcoding will be patched soon enough. Capcom is working to fix it.
The game is very fun, but it was rushed. There are a few audio bugs and voice directing errors that made it through, such as Galactus threatening to squash you like a bug when you defeat him instead of a death cry, despite that there is one in his audio dialogue gallery, or how Felicia’s English voice actress was directed to record one line in Japanese, despite that Felicia as a character is a 100% English speaking born and raised American. Hsien-ko’s Chinese dialogue is understandable because she’s a Chinese vampire.
The mission mode, as you pointed out, eventually becomes a living hell where you have to memorize long strings of combos and execute them flawlessly through trial and error or you have to start over again. Unlike BlazBlue, the mission mode does not allow you to see the combo played out ahead of time if you wanted.
An easy way to get into online matches is to go into arcade mode and turn on the fight request. Considering I run into a match before I can even finish a hyper combo I have no problems, and Capcom is adding a patch that will enable a spectator mode. But I agree. You shouldn’t have to go into offline mode and turn on something optional to play online. They definitely need to fix that. Also, I hope they don’t bullshit us on DLC. 6 costumes and Shadow mode for $5? That is crap. Capcom obviously knows through the hype for this game that people would be suckered in to buying DLC for ridiculous prices. If and when Capcom releases new characters, I want individual characters to be $1, new modes to be $2, and costumes in packs worth $1, or something along those lines.
According to Employee Responses on Capcom-Unity, Capcom’s official forums, Spectator Mode is being planned as a patch for Marvel vs Capcom 3 sometime.
I was a little dismayed at the lack of story and modes as well. I was expecting most of the modes from Tatsunoko vs Capcom to return, and the story bit was because of hiring Frank Teiri for the story of the game and hyping up that MvC3 would have a storyline.
Oh yeah, and having bought the Special Edition of Marvel vs Capcom 3, I can inform you that the Crossing Over of the Universes has to do with some sort of Dimensional Warping. Galactus comes into play because of this and Super Skrull suggests to the other villians (Wesker, Dr. Doom, Magneto, MODOK, and Taskmaster) that they try to harness his energy to balance the portals so they can travel through them to conquer the Marvel Universe, as well as the various Capcom Universes. However, they don’t explain what causes the portals.
My thoughts are that the story was left unfinished by the time the release date came around and that they’ll make it, and other modes, as DLC sometime later on.
Also, Jill Valentine appears in the comic in her RE5 appearance, as she does as a DLC character, only she’s good and doesn’t have the Chest Device.
Sean! You can do crossover air raids in TvC! Its just a lot harder to do. The command is QCF+P during a midair combo. You really should read instruction booklets!
As for the whole story vs. gameplay debate:
I think that, with a game like this, story is nice, but gameplay is far more important. After all, how will people enjoy this game? Some will play the campaign, some will just want to go head-to-head with competitors.
But let’s not discount the importance of a good story behind a game. True, in the old days, you really didn’t need to know why the frog was trying to cross that road, or the yellow mouth was eating all those dots while being chased by ghosts, or that tiny triangular ship was trying to blow up all those asteroids. But this is the 2010s, people! Video games have long established themselves as an excellent story-telling medium.
Does a game like this need a strong story to be fun? Not really. But it helps. Alot. For some, it will help to draw them into the gameplay and appreciate the action. For others, it’s just an added bonus, like the frame on a fine work of art.
If this were a film, I’d say skimping on the story is fail. But this is a video game, and the bottom line is, is it fun to play?
Why doesn’t Capcom do what Midway did & have an Arcade mode & a Story mode? It’s not that hard to do.
aww, I was hoping for a story mode kinda like Subspace Emissary from Smash Bros Brawl, (which is what the trailer videos led me to believe) not just that arcade story bit we’ve seen in every other fighting game ever made. As awesome as it is to make all the great capcom characters fight all the marvel characters, it’s kind of pointless without a story.
Caring about the story in a fighting game=fail.
I actually was looking forward to this game’s storymode, as we were promised something that was like Subspace Emissary, but got this bare bones crap. Capcom dropped the ball big time, and it is a shame.
about the spectator mode for all we know it could be added on as DLC for some $$
Sean, just wondering, did you consider that the whole “how the worlds crossed over” Thing might have been handled in one of the first two games? Considering this is the third installment and all.
I can assure you that the first two (or four, if you count X-men vs Street Fighter and Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter) have nothing to do with this game, aside from being previous entries.
In Marvel vs Capcom, the Capcom heroes were brought to Marvel’s world by the Prof. X part of Onslaught, whereas in Marvel vs Capcom 2, the story, what little there was, explained that Ruby Heart collected all the Capcom and Marvel Heroes and Villains to her own world to help search for some Magical Item.
I believe the 1st and second games had different reasonings behind it. which is why the lack of explanation frustrated me.
Even if the plot is available in the guide that’s not saying a lot. It couldn’t have been that hard to put in some explanation between fights and compared to testing the physics of the fights it wouldn’t cost much to make the cutscenes.
I was disappointed with the lobby matches too. I was expecting to be a spectator like in MvC2 but alas. I go through the longest 5-10 mins waiting for the license cards to stop fighting.
I haven’t played Tatsunoko vs Capcom that much and I’m still trying to get used to playing with the three button style. It’s not bad, it’s just new for me. It doesn’t help that I don’t have an arcade stick yet.
So the Moral of the Story is: Play solo, or get your friends over your place, because online needs work!
Nice.
MvC3 is already very good game so if those things that Sean complained about are fixed it will surely be almost perfect fighting game.
I am interested in seeing where this game goes. It’s only been one week so I don’t think everyone has been tested yet, Like you said, you haven’t seen many arthur’s. But he’s apparently got one of the Best Assists in the game. And M.O.D.O.K. Can be one of the more frightening people to fight against, but no one has tried him due to his akward Fighting Style. In fact, opinions of Phoenix changed greatly, Everyone was scared of herdue to her healing abilities, then everyone wrote her off when they saw she can be killed with one hyper combo. THEN Everyone started worrying about her when they saw how destructive Dark Phoenix is. THe strategy is to Snap-Back her in and KO her before the opponent gets the chance to build 5 bars. Honestly, some characters could be near unstoppable but we don’t know yet because no one has tested them.
They’ve all be going with Sentinel, Phoenix, Dante and Deadpool. Not to keen on Sentinel being in the game, but at least he’s unique. Just make him Slower Capcom and have his attacks take longer to come out and I think he’ll be fair. He shouldn’t have the Highest Health and Highest Average Attack Power and yet still be faster than some of the other characters in the game.
And maybe they’ll patch some stuff. X-Factor would be better if all versions only lasted for 10 seconds, you’d still get all the buffs, it just doesn’t last anywhere near as long. The main problem is knocking out two members, them using X-Factor and then flooring your team. But in return you can X-Factor with your last character and do the same. I just think Ten Seconds is long enough, Just so you have to be really, really good to KO all of the opponents team with your last character.
Oh, and patch in Spectator mode and Replays. C’mon Capcom.
Dear people complaining about FIGHTING GAMES DON’T NEED STORY!:
Remember when we were actually PROMISED a really good story in this game written by actual comic book writers? And like Sean said, it’s completely possible for a fighting game to have a decent if not great story. Quit acting like fighting games having story is a goddamn sin. I wouldn’t call a lack of story “UNACCEPTABLE”, but I would call it disappointing.
Also, Phoenix isn’t overpowered, especially not Dark Phoenix – it takes five levels of Hyper Bar to come back, so she won’t ALWAYS do it unless the opponent is specifically trying to, in which case, they’re probably not throwing any Hypers at you unless they’re REALLY good at building meter. Secondly, like has been said before, her health is NONEXISTENT. Phoenix has the lowest health in the game by a wide margin, and Dark Phoenix has even less. Instead of cowering when she goes Dark Phoenix and whining about how hard she is, how about you, I dunno, hit her a couple times? Seriously, I had someone go Dark Phoenix on me, I used Zero’s level 3 Hyper, and bam, she’s dead in one hit. And that was from almost full health.
ALSO: If you’re having trouble finding matches online, switch the language option to English. I spent upwards of ten or more minutes trying to find matches before I learned about that, and now I get matches all the time. I assume if you don’t it keeps trying to set you up against people who are a million miles away from you or something, but setting it to English keeps you fighting people near you. Helpful tip I think everyone needs to hear.
And regarding balancing, at least it’s better than MvC2′s. You listed maybe three characters who you thought were bad? Try listing the bad characters in MvC2. You’d list almost the entire cast. Also, the characters you listed are less “bad” and more “awkward” – it’s been, what, a week? Give people time to really figure out Arthur and ESPECIALLY MODOK, and you might see their stock rise.
Jesus, I wrote way more than I expected to. I need to stop bitching.
So you and Jew Wario gonna get at it?
Playing online is hard, basically everyone have some competitive skill level, it is not the same as playing with a friend. So it is natural to have frustration playing it online. The overall gameplay is amazing, you have a lot of fun playing it. I find you bitching a little bit about some aspects of the game, Like the online profile details, that just adds to the experience. And it is cool to findout the game takes on your weak and strong points. I think who hear you talking like that could even asks himself if he should or not buy this awesome game which is a “must have”. I agree with you on the game modes, they could have added a few more modes. And about the lobby being boring and the players unable to watch others fights. But I think probably it is some technical decision, probably not “laziness”, but something to avoid the lag on other’s match I guess.
The overall review is fair, though I think that Sean is kind of nitpicking with things like no story and lack of modes, the latter which I agree with, but I’ve never seen much of a point in having a crapton of modes in a fighting game. You mainly need the Arcade, Versus, Training and (preferably) challenge/mission mode, everything else is filler imo since fighting games are about fighting.
The gameplay is where I disagree a good deal. It’s pretty balanced and the “broken” things are balanced to a certain degree because certain conditions are needed to do infinites and X-factor while is broken in certain areas is balanced by being temporary as well as your opponent having the ability to do the same thing, and since you, you know have to get hit by it.
Though I will say that X-Factor Level 3 can be pretty devastating in certain situations. If you for example damaged your opponent’s team to a good amount (about 45%, lower) and you’re using say Ryu with a level 3 HC gauge, you can do some nasty damage with chip damage alone, and Dark Phoenix + X Factor Level 3 is a dangerous combination as well. But that doesn’t at all break the game, if you play right, you can find ways through it.
For me, it’s not perfectly balanced, though I think that few if any fighting games are like that but it’s balanced enough for me to not view it as a noob-friendly spamfest with a crapton of exploits.
I don’t understand your bit with needing a story. The first two didn’t have one so why should this one? Because of how we can story tell better with this generation or previous one? NO. MVC3 is like this; It is basically as if some nerd who was a fan of both companies had a dream. And then Pheonix, Iron man, and Dead Pool, fought Spiderman, Wolverine and Ryu. Then after defeating them he had to fight Galactus because the world was blowing up. Its all just for fun. There is supposed to be infinite combos and balance issues and long range wins and Rocket punch to the face over and over. It is supposed to be for sh*ts and giggles.
The other thing I would compare this series to is Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a fighting game. Except the concept which was originally some kid playing with toys fighting each other. Thats what fighting the hand boss was all about. Do you understand where I am coming from with this?
For the lobby they should show the fight and have a chat system going too
Fair points all. The online issues in particular are kinda heart-breaking, especially since they JUST “fixed” all that stuff with SSFIV.
However, from a straight gameplay and fun factor standpoint, it’s great. It’s by no means a perfect game, and the score is taking into account all factors (and as such seems fair), but I’m loving every minute of it.
Well, almost every minute of it. Damn Sentinels…
Story is not important in a fighting game. MK had a nice expansive story, so what, the gameplay is shallow and gimmicky, and it died because of that. Then look at the SF series, the games basically give you no story other than the character endings, but it’s still the biggest fighting game and multiple games from the series are played in every major fighting game tournament.
Another thing is infinite is really not a problem with the ridiculous damage levels. Outside of sentinel specific infinites they pretty much all require X-factor, but if you are using X-factor you can already kill someone in one combo. The biggest problem is X-factor itself. It’s way too versatile and damaging. I can lv 1 X-factor guard cancel and kill someone in one combo from there, or kill someone with massive hail storm chip damage, or kill freaking sentinel with X-factor cancel combo starting from a THROW, that’s just bullshit.
People shouldn’t get Thumbs Down just for disagreeing with the review but I have to ask what’s the point of the game if the story is bare bones. Take the Tekken games as an example, they didn’t waste much time but they do let you know what’s going on. Without that you might as well just say “Morrigan and Dante are fighting because Dante used the last of her conditioner”.
The point of the game is, of course, gameplay. Why is pacman eating dots? Why the hell did the dinoturtle kidnap the princess? Etc. None of those basic questions are ever explained, but people play the game because the game is fun. It would have been nice if they put more story in but all that effort would’ve only gotten a “Oh, that’s nice!” from the players.
The Mario games were originally created at a time when they couldn’t squeeze a story into there. In fact usually when the game had a story it was as generic as possible. I still expect a bit more than that by 2011. And once again people, giving someone a Thumbs Down just because he disagrees with Sean is not cool.
Okay you know what is f***ed up. If you bought the special edition you could get jill and that other thing ( cant remember his name) it says that they will be release march 15 but hackers already found out that Jill and the other guy ARE ALREADY IN THE DISC!. Capcom I love you but what the fuck!? We have to pay for DLC that is already in the disc? That is bullshit! But considering the badass cover that comes with the special edition I say it is worth it but still capcom what the hell.
Oh! and you placed Sentinel back in the freaking game?! Why?! I use a Wolverine/Felicia/Akuma Team and I use Akuma mostly for all the people using Sentinel, Dane with his unlimited combos Amateratsu and frikking Doom.
I still love this game cause it is soo frantic and fun and If I just play arcade mode with fight request on I can play ranked matches sooooo much faster. like every minute. You still cant see who you are fighting but hey it beat waiting for a frikking player to be found.
To be fair, wolverine and akuma are both great against sentinel. Both have speed to pressure, good instant overhead on sentinel that can combo, and fairly easy 100% sentinel combos.
It is done so to crack down on piracy. EA is doing it with Madden and now Capcom is too. The same happened with Assassins creed 2. Get over it. They paid for the special edition which cost more money and you will pay that 15-20 dollars more as dlc if you did not pick up the special edition. You pay the same amount of money both ways. You are not getting ripped off there.
I have to agree with Sean. In some ways, this game is even MORE unbalanced that MvC2. I was playing a match online earlier today, and the guy playing against me was using Phoenix. I knew from the previews and such that she was pretty OP, but what happened today was unacceptable. After I downed Phoenix, she CAME BACK TO LIFE with a counting-down health bar, and was three times as powerful as before.
I’ve already dealt with Sentinel spammers, Spider-Man’s obnoxiously high frame rate, and Magneto’s cheapness. But this was just too far. That kind of thing is for boss characters, NOT PvP matches. At that point, I said, “F*** it, and F*** this game!”, and just taunted my opponent for the rest of the match.
I traded in 5 GAMES for this, three of which were very good games. If this is the kind of s*** I’m supposed to expect, I may be done with fighters. I may just stick to RPG’s. At least on those you know the boss is going to be cheap, AND you can OP yourself right back in his face.
What really sucks about Pheonix’s revival form, is that when she comes back, If you use X-factor as soon as she revives, Her health bar doesn’t get the permenant decrease. It acts like a normal health bar, with fast regeneration due to the x-factor, and crazy powerful offensive moves. BROKEN
Come on, phoenix? The poor girl has like half the health of the next weakest character. Even with undepleting revive she still has below average health.
Actually, she has the same health as Dark Phoenix that she did as Phoenix, with the added disadvantage that it drains on its own. She’s the ultimate glass a cannon, a massive risk/massive reward character, capable of being easily taken out but also capable of being overwhelmingly strong.
Thing is, if a player notices that his opponent is trying to get Dark Phoenix (should be easy to tell, they’ll be skipping opportunities to use supers since she needs a full 5 meter to do that), he can just force her out early with a snapback, and from there all it takes is one combo to eliminate her entirely. So even waiting to use her for last is no guaranteed defense. Because of that I’m not so sure her power outweighs her weakness, honestly. Heck, even chip damage from a few good hypers can take her out.
Well, I don’t count dark phoenix as a separate character since you can’t just pick her by herself.
This games a lot of fun. The x factor can be kind of annoying though.
As far as the story I dont think its even required. It doesnt make me feel any more connected to the game. Blazblue has a great story but that isnt why I like it
With the online i found the connection was better when you were in a lobby otherwise it almost never worked
The story, Sean? Really? The game features characters from 2 universes that have absolutely nothing to do with each other, characters who, within their OWN universes, have little to do with each other, doubly so when it comes to Capcom. If you’re looking for stories or endings that go beyond simple fan service in your fighting games, you are playing the wrong genre. Blazblue has a passable story, but that’s not why people play it.
I won’t argue with the rest of your criticisms, but as someone who plays in person with friends who suck as much as me, I’m not too bothered by them either.
The problems I find with this game is that long range characters take so much more precedence over short range. Unless you have a character who can teleport (like Dante or Deadpool), then the opponent can spam IronMan’s Unibeam or something similar and destroy you online or atleast take a good bit of health on until you jump to them enough
Sentinel is the wost of all. He is so large and his attacks deal alot of damage while he takes little himself. His attacks have a large radius and they have little lag between them.
Hopefully DLC comes in the future, because I suck too much at this game online to be playing it much longer, especially with march rolling around and all of those great games release (DA2, Dissidia 012, Ar Tonelico, Pokemon, etc.) and the only DLc announced is Jill and lame Shum-Gorath
Thanks for the review. I’ll just wait to buy the game when the DLC start coming.
Having just purchased both Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom and S. Street Fighter IV for under $20 used. I think I’ll wait for the kinks to be knocked out of this one..or until they re-release it with more characters (Because Capcom never does that).
Its a good set of games for that price
SSF4 is a better game overall but TvC is fun distraction too.
Sorry but for one claiming to be a serious player you obviously don’t understand the games mechanics regarding combos and “infinites”. The game engine makes infinites IMPOSSIBLE. Yeah there are combos that could take your whole life but they are in no way infinites as they require to use for example ground bounce (1 per combo allowed) and super attacks. The pure requirement of spending your super meter makes it not infinite.
All the infinite loops i’ve seen require level 2 or 3 X-factor. reduces frame timing to the point even x-23′s simple quarter circle forward M can link together infinitely due to the mobility boost.
Which still isn’t infinite, since X-Factor doesn’t last forever. As he said, one-combo kills exist, but infinite combos do not.
Personally, I’m also fine with excusing the lack of story here. For a regular fighting game I’d be quite disappointed (I certainly was when I rented Super Street Fighter 4), but this is a crossover game. All these characters come from their own stories already, and trying to make a story involving all of them that isn’t pure cheese would be damn near impossible – especially since Capcom’s characters don’t come from a single more-or-less coherent universe like Marvel’s do. Going simply for humorous or fanservice-y arcade mode endings works for me in this regard. It would have been utterly fantastic if they had something comparable to BlazBlue’s story mode, certainly, but it doesn’t strike me as a realistic expectation.
The only thing gives me any disappointment about it is the fact that Capcom did tout the fact that they actually had a story being written for the game by a Marvel writer during previews – that must just have been for the comic that comes with the collector’s edition, though. It is irritating that they never mentioned that.
Plot and storyline are not core requirements of a fighting game Shawn
I would disagree
If a game has a strong story you feel more connected
I was attracted to the MK franchise because of the story line and its what kept me involved with the franchise.
I’ll backtrack a bit and mention the King of Fighters series, which did have a story of sorts.
Anyways nice review Shawn.

Great review! Maybe its just me but Im really tired of Capcom buttfucking us for DLC. You can bet your ass that their going to be releasing at least 10-20 more characters in DLC and all the missed modes along with costumes over the next 6 months or more… *sigh* :/
Ofcorse it would be best to wait for I don’t know Super Marvel vs Capcom 3 whatever the first dlc pack version we’ll get will be called.
