Game Scan TV: Nights Into Dreams, 3.9 out of 5 based on 42 ratings
Game Scan TV is a gamer's nostalgia show that takes a laid back approach to old school gaming remembrance. Featuring roundtable discussion, local arcade interviews with gamers, and voice over narration, Game Scan TV invites you share in the memories of gaming's past.
Interesting start of the show. I don’t know why, but despite the polish of this show, it just didn’t grab me. I do like how you were talking about the game, but you didn’t really say anything about the game-play. There was mention of flight and the very most basic parts of it, but what I felt was most unique about it was the way it moved – a 2D plane with 3D graphics.
You didn’t even really discuss the wonderful music score or the A-lifes that would be the precursor to the Chao in Sonic Adventure. Not to mention, the flying chao turn purple and look remarkably like NiGHTs just to mention. Or the fact that this was Sonic Team.
The Christmas NiGHTs disk reference was good and nice, and I did like finding out hoe the reactions were in Japan as well, but this retrospec seemed… lacking.
I love NiGHTs. I admit the game makes me misty eyed with nostalgia even today. I LOVE the game completely. But it’s not without faults. Being an early polygonal game, it had its limitations. While it had very little ‘clipping’ compared to other games of the time, it did have some – particularly on the children’s clothes. It also didn’t have the ability to let you past a certain point in the dream, without seeing a wavy purple static as a backdrop. (Only viewable while playing as the children – still). My Chief complaint about the game is that it’s TOO SHORT. Only 3 unique screens per child and 1 shared dream.
And I am sorry, but Journey of dreams did not “suck”. My main objection was always the voice acting and mostly toward NiGHTs himself. It closely mirrored the first game, a little too much for some I can understand. It also had the same 3 unique, 1 shared stage setup, but it had something the first game didn’t – Missions. This extended the gameplay, not to mention online races and their version of a chao garden with the A-lifes. NiGHTs new transformations were nice and it was also nice to see a stage or two where the children had something to do. Clarise and Elliot were there just for the sake of giving NiGHTs a boost – in JoD, they actually do stuff. Could it have been better? Certainly, but it was far from horrible. Just saying it sucked without any explanation is a disservice to it.
I didn’t own a saturn, so I was only able to play the original NiGHTS, except for a brief time when my cousin brought his system over. I DID however read the archie comic, so I identified with NiGHTS as a character. When Journey of Dreams came out on the Wii I couldn’t get to the store fast enough. I hope they make another game, more of a proper sequel than a remake.
Why did you say Journey of Dreams sucked? You didn’t give any explanations as to WHY…I thought it was a pretty damn good game.
Ah this is still one of my favorite games. I ended up selling my Saturn and old copy of NiGHTS a while back, but that’s only because I got the Japanese remake on PS2 which is simply wonderful and has Xmas NiGHTS in it. Hadda mutilate my PS2 a bit for a magic swap but hey, fangirlism.
I was always the Nintendo kid in the family, though I’d trade my brother my N64 for the day to play NiGHTS. I always remember being frustrated with the first ads too, cause they spent more time bashing the Playstation than talking about the actual game, which looked awesome.
I think everyone expected a sequel on the Dreamcast. Hell I even got a GameCube because of rumors of a NiGHTS sequel on that. But it took 11 years and came out on the Wii and… ugh.
It’s sad that the sequel NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams was so… awful. Unfortunately it was put in the hands of Sonic Team USA., probably the weakest studio Sega has. The music and opening and closing FMVs were made in Japan though, and were vastly superior to the actual game. I still have some choice tracks from the soundtrack on my usual playlist :p
I think part of N:JoD’s problem was that it WAS too story driven. Having a linear story and so much voice acting is really detrimental to the whole dream thing. They never take advantage of the dream setting either, unlike the first game NiGHTs can’t be in two places at once (it’s generally implied in the first that the kids’ dreams are happening simultaneously) and I swear to god one of the character’s twists her ankle… IN A DREAM. It’s basically just an inferior retread of the first game, it doesn’t bring much new and the level design completely abolishes the system of the first where you could just continue to loop around and around the level racking up points before the time ran out.
That … comic book series was also… oh god. *facepalm*
I really like the idea of this show of a group discussion about retro games nostalgia. I think I would like to see this format for a show to be used to talk about video game related stuff like, “Why do you think Final Fantasy XIII suck so much?” You see, have an open discussion, get the average hardcore gamer’s opinion with the man on the street segment, which is another part that I like about this show, and also get the casual gamer’s opinion as well. You know, give them a voice too. I don’t know, maybe that is not the direction you guys were going with your show. If so that fine. I do like the show you have now. Keep up the good work.
Technically, there was a Nights sequel in development called Air NiGHTs. Originally being developed for the Saturn, production was moved to the Dreamcast kinda like Shenmue. They were also developing a motion technology to work with the game, and even though the project was eventually canned, the motion technology that was supposed to work with Air NiGHTs eventually became implemented in the maracas in Samba de Amigo.
Anyway, awesome premier guys. I like the direction this show takes on talking about old games. I hope to be seeing more episodes in the near future
In the Knights Wii game they gave Knights a voice and it turns out she’s a girl! With a cute accent! I was really surprised when she started talking in it!

While I had never heard of the game, I enjoyed the show with the laidback nature. I almost as though I was a guest with you guys. This was a very informative show that was delivered in a relaxing manner and I hope to see more of these in the future.
That’s one kickass KOF poster you guys got there! The style looks like it came from one of the manhuas. …Oh, and nice little personal retrospective too, of course.
Man, that review was so great. I am now a huge fan of Game Scan TV. Keep the episodes coming !!!!
Too much talking and pointless interviews, not enough actual gameplay.
I watched the video and barely know in-depth details.
That’s a wasted opportunity IMO.
Possibly won’t be watching again.
Eh, it’s kind of like one of those late night shows they used to put on ITV.
You don’t sound too impassioned about what you’re talking about it, and those ‘Did you know’ segments were kind of… eh?
But I enjoyed it, so I’m looking forward to more from you guys in the future.

Plus, the main character looks like The Joker’s girlfriend.

I never had a Saturn but I do own the comic. It wasn’t perfect, but it wasn’t that bad.

really?? talking about Nights for 18 Minutes??? –_–
Actually, it’s a blip.tv glitch. The episode is really 13 minutes.

Great show. Love the referee Mario doing the count up. I am looking forward to seeing more.
Great show guys! Nights looks like fun. It’s nice to learn more about the Sega Saturn.
Great show guys. Informative, entertaining, and and great production value. Looks like someone’s finally trying.
I like this show, so relaxed and they give a lot of information about the game.
And the “Did you know” section is pretty interesting.

No surprise to learn that the sequel sucked. Sonic Team needs to be disbanded and Segas best IPs put in the hands of competent developers again.

This is great! NiGHTS is one of my favorite games ever, and you guys did an awesome job of talking about what makes it so great.
Awesome, I was always interested in Sega Saturn. And the show is great, something new at least
