I agree with a lot of the list, outside of Star Trek Online and FFXIII.

I had a one year subscription to STO, and while I didn’t play it all the time, what I did play I enjoyed. You can complain about lack of diplomatic stuff, but a lot of gamers just want to blow shit up. There’s been a LOT of improvements since the game came out though. There is a system of diplomatic missions in place now, there’s three difficulty settings for missions that improve the loot you get, and they have some very interesting quest that they release as sets over a course of a month. I’m not subscribed now but it’s because I don’t have a credit card. It’s not a WoW killer but it’s still good.

As for FFXIII, I have no idea why everyone hates on the game. Okay so the combat got dumbed down, I didn’t mind. As far as “open world exploration”, NONE of the Final Fantasy games had that. I don’t know why people keep saying they do. EVERY Final Fantasy game is linear. You follow a path and go from point A to point B for 90% of the game and then at the end you get an airship and can fly around doing whatever. GUESS WHAT?! Final Fantasy XIIi is EXACTLY the freaking SAME! The only difference being they took from an overhead view and set it behind the player and put you in a corridor. And they didn’t put it towns because the storyline dealt with characters being FUGITIVES who were wanted DEAD so they couldn’t very well show up in town!

Anyway, the rest of the list is alright.

I don’t have a list, but if I had to choose the worst game I played 2010, it would have to be Halo Reach. I’ve never played a game that had such a dreadful single player, which had no characters who I liked or was sad to see go, AND had such an ass-backwards multiplayer, which was made so that even the best Halo players could barely fight 2 n00bers at the same time. I felt like this game was made for people who had never played a Halo game, over long-time fans like me, and it was such a big letdown for me. JUST MY OPINION THOUGH.

the reason i dont play final fantasy, is because ITS TOO DAMN LONG!!!

now if it was done WELL id put up with it, but it isnt, the characters suck and are annoying, the battles are tedious and annoying, the story makes no damn sense, the WORLD makes no sense……NOTHING MAKES SENSE!!!

As for FF XIII, I think it’s a good game. I don’t like it as a Final Fantasy game, though. If they gave it a different name, I would have been okay with that. No, this game doesn’t live up to the Final Fantasy standards. You need exploration, more customizations, more secrets, THE RIGHT FREAKING VICTORY MUSIC, side quests, and a lot more! I would have enjoyed this game more if I wasn’t so disappointed that it had the Final Fantasy name attached to it. I hope you all understand what I mean by that. LOL The older games were so much deeper in detail in the way of what you could do and how the game was played.

Joe you are COMPLEATLY right about naughty bear. Its a rushed “horror” game with only one fucking level in the entire game and no replay value. If it werent for for the final fantasy games (that franchise needs to die!) and fable 3 it would be my worst game of 2011. Plus to any one reading this dont buy Naughty bear, the final fantasy games and fable 3.

Don’t know if I’ve got a top ten but got a few that was disappointed with for sure.
Just to pick some out on the list, definitely Fable 3 was disappointing again blown out of proportion by Peter Molyneux.

I liked how my friend gave me a warning about saving money and how I then left the game playing while I did other stuff, it just felt like a poor way to lengthen the game. Why do I have to repair properties individually? Why can’t I just repair all, just busy work, also it seemed a lot shorter than the past two games with that part taken out.

Alpha Protocol I was really looking forward to, thought it would be like Mass Effect, but the part I played never seemed that great, I tended to melee everyone as it seemed more effective than using guns most of the time. I didn’t really like the conversation system, I can see a time limit can make you decide more quickly and possibly be more like who you are than who you are trying to be, but shouldn’t I be able to choose? I wasn’t sure exactly what response would be like till I chose it and it wasn’t what I wanted meaning my character was not coming across how I wanted, which as a player I feel I should be able to do, especially in a ROLE PLAYING GAME.

Iron Man 2 I rented and thought would be bad and it was, plus it gave me an annoying uneven achievement. I know that shouldn’t be a major gripe but this goes out to all developers, no odd point achievements I like my score to end with a 0 or a 5, it just looks right, better etc.

Final Fantasy XIII was alright but I haven’t finished it have stalled so I suppose that says a lot. Why are pretty much all the characters unlikeable, they are either annoying or weird. Hope is so whiney it defies all known natural laws in the universe, but then he tries to be all badass and it gets even worse.

Kane and Lynch 2 played the demo that was enough thought the first game though no masterpiece had some good set pieces in it and had potential for a better sequel, but no just the rubbish that was released.

The biggest disappointing game of 2010 for me though was Star Wars Force Unleashed 2. I was really looking forward to this I know not everyone is a fan of the first, but I did like it. It wasn’t perfect but i enjoyed and as I saw more of the FU2 i was more and more excited. I even pre-ordered the special edition which I then didn’t pick up.
    *Semi-spoiler warning*
I mean they managed to make a fight with Vader the most iconic villain of the series….boring. I t was just so dragged out and dull, I mean that is a challenge. The bit with Yoda is also rubbish, it’s about 30 seconds long and only a few words are exchanged.

Think that’s got to be it for me as afar as I can remember, so nice one Joe.

AND I LOVED DIVINITY 2 DKS, IT WAS WHAT OBLIVION SHOULD OF BEEN!!!, but im sure once again the platform is the issue here, since i played it on my freinds 360, the graphic are horrible and gameplay is glitchy, but its a PC game, it was ported to 360, of course it is bad on 360, and you should know that these rpgs should be played on a pc joe.

Well Joe you asked so here are my ten worst of 2010.

    10. Darksiders. Not bad really just bland and forgettable
    9. force unleashed 2. second verse same as the first
    8. alpha protocol. pretty much the same reasons you hated it Joe
    7. Dragonball raging blast 2. the dragonball fighting games are my favorite fighting games of all time. this one however is bogged down by horrible controls, screen tearing, and frame rate chugging that just make it an unplayable mess.
    6. Stargate resistance. Cutting the funding to stargate worlds then using the half finished pieces of what could have been a great game to make a generic mess of an online shooter… FAIL!
    5. Metroid other m. decent game play but everything else… I never thought i would say this ever in my entire life but fuck you team ninja.
    4. aliens vs. predator. a lackluster forgettable shooter. It’s avp, it should have been awesome, how did this happen!
    3. Final fantasy 14. Just…ugh
    2. APB. This could have been great. it had so much potential. but it was squandered by the terrible physics engine, lackluster game play, and some of the worst servers I’ve ever seen an MMO hosted on.
    1. The last airbender the game. A shitty movie tie in game of an even shittier movie that sodomizes a great TV show. The mere existence of this game makes me incoherent with rage.

@ Mr. Gunns: As stated in my post, my list specified, as Mr. Joe requested, the most “disappointing” games of 2010. Not the worst, as (considering the amount of independent and/or low budget games out there) none of those in my list or Mr. Joe’s would qualify as the “worst”. This is also my opinion. If you liked ME2, more power to you, and I’m glad you felt you received your money’s worth.

As far as reason, my primary reason is the actual narrative itself. While I have issues with aspects of the gameplay, companions, and campaign progression, it is the narrative itself that infuriated me as it progressed and has prevented me from venturing a second playthrough.

    ****
Note: The remainder of this post will contain spoilers regarding ME2′s plot. Please do not continue reading if you have not played ME2 and do not wish to ruin the plot of this game for yourself.
    ****

The narrative, from the minute you meet cigarette smoking man (Cerberus), insists that the Prothean bugs (Collectors) are a major threat, and your mission to defeat the Collectors is a one-way ticket, with no hope of survival and only a slim chance of success.

This is a fine setting for a game’s narrative. So what does Shepherd do?

    1) Spends 90% of the cutscenes whining (in a nice or evil manner) how they’re all going to die, how it’s a suicide mission, how there’s no chance of survival….

    2) Spends 66% of the game recruiting random individuals to follow him into hell. In most game stories, recruitment missions are necessary, as the hero’s party has no supplies or soldiers, and needs to work his/her way back into the spotlight (DA:O) or prepare for the coming battle (FFVI onward?). This is shown to be pointless in ME2 though, as cigarette smoking man constantly feeds you supplies, soldiers, and crew free of charge, any of which Shepherd could have just selected for his mission. On top of this, with the exception of Mordin’s (and arguably Tali’s), none of these missions have any bearing on the overall plot of the story, serving as glorified side-missions.

So, with the exclusion of the opening mission, the midway mission, and the finale, nothing you ever did had any point to the overall narrative, serving instead of busywork to fluff out the game.

The ending level compounds this. What Shepherd spent the entire game moping over turns into a cakewalk compared to other missions he/she has already faced. Even without a full crew (previously abducted, leaving 1 man and 1 AI to pilot the ship), you’re able to board the supposed ‘juggernaut’ ship that already humiliated the original and current Normandy each once already. After a few lacklusted firefights, you encounter one of the most anti-established-canon bosses ever (the Human-Reaper more or less spits in the face of what the Protheans, Saren, and Sovereign beat into our heads in ME1 about the Reapers), stroll back to your ship (with all or some of your ‘super’ team you’ve spent the entire game assembling), and deliver the standard Shenmue 2 ending to build hype for the final sequel.

The issue that ruins this narrative for me is it never felt like it knew what it was doing.

      Continuation…

The issue that ruins this narrative for me is it never felt like it knew what it was doing.

In ME1, the story is a chase after Saren and the unknown. You do not know where Saren is, so it is a hunt to discover his location and unravel the mystery of the Reavers, Protheans, and Saren’s plan. The side-missions in ME1 are acceptable, as you’re still on the chase, and any little bit of information acquired could lead to the clue that cracks the mystery.

In DA:O, the story is a rebuilding of the order and avenging your fallen comrades. You have nothing and are being pursued by an overwhelming force that threatens to destroy the realm and a tyrant that wants you erased to cover his own misdeeds. It’s a constant fight for survival against two fronts all the while attempting to build an army that can combat the great evil. The side missions in DA:O are acceptable, as you’re trying to strengthen your army to face the evil and find a way to unify your efforts with the tyrant that wants you dead against that very evil, whether that involves an uneasy alliance or overthrow of his empire.

In ME2, the story is to gather a team of random individuals because a man with a smoking habit stated they may be helpful. Even though cigarette smoking man literally built your body and gave you an amazing ship, a crew of some of (by his own admission) the best in the business, unlimited resources, and a map of where to go and what to do, you instead spend the entire game wandering the known galaxy looking for lost souls to add to your crew of aces, gathering resources you could have just asked for, and developing weapons and equipment you could have just bought/commissioned from your numerous contacts. Side Missions are pretty much the entire game, and serve no purpose to the plot whatsoever but to make your recruits more willing to face death (too bad you had an entire crew from the start just as willing without you having to kiss their boo boos).

And that is my primary issue with ME2. The entire game feels like a waste of time, as that is all your character is doing despite the looming crisis. It’s as though you were playing FFVI, and instead of gathering the Returners and Espers, you spent the second half of the game as Terra nursing babies until the end when you faced Kefka. When a game is so narrative focused, the game needs to actually contribute to that narrative, whether its as simple as Saints Row or as massive as Metal Gear Solid 4, as confusing as Final Fantasy Tactics or as straightforward as Arcadia IV. ME2 just feels like King’s Quest 2, where after you finish you stop and go “Why did I do that again?”

      ****

I hope that satisfies your request. Let us not derail this topic though. If you enjoyed ME2, whether massively or only mildly, then good for you. You proved to be a smarter consumer than I. However, for as much as I loved Mass Effect 1 and Biowares other games, and for how surprised I was by Dragon Age Origins, I had let my hopes get very high for ME2. In my opinion, the game massively underperformed, and thus is why it was, in my opinion, my biggest Disappointment (not worst game) of 2010.

Liked the list, Joe, I really did. I have to disagree about Fable III being on the list, though.

Was it anywhere near as good as the awesomeness of the first game? No, not really. But was it a bad game? No, not really either. It wasn’t especially good, I concur that much, but it didn’t induce massive hair-tearing anger and hatred toward what a franchise has become.

THAT honor is reserved for Force Unleashed 2. And really, THAT should have been on your list, not Fable III.

Most of your list didn’t surprise me. There were two entries that I WAS surprised about. The Final Fantasies. I didn’t think you played them, and I can understand FFXIV being on there (as it’s pretty much borked SE’s release schedule as you said) but XIII’s reason for being on there really made me sad.

Namely that that horrendous abomination was your introduction to the series.

That game is… Auuugh. I don’t get the fans who still defend this thing. It’s a hallway simulator. It might as well be a glorified SCREEN SAVER that requires you to fight a random battle every time you want to return to your desktop! Oh, and wherein logging back into your computer requires you to watch a 5 minute long cutscene where the characters exposite endlessly about things we don’t care about. Or where Vanille has to amp up the lolicon horrors another level.

Final Fantasy hasn’t been been good for over a decade. I don’t think the fanbase has had to suffer quite as much as the Sonic fanbase, but it’s definitely been terrible. I myself used to count myself among their fans–again–ten years ago. After X… …eh…

…it hurts when you realize that you can no longer love something that brought you so much happiness as a child. The sad thing is I still watch the company, praying that they’ll release something halfway decent. WTF is wrong with me?!

Square Enix. Stop sucking. Just stop it. Please.

I agree. Final Fantasy 13 was nothing short of a gigantic massive dump upon the awesomeness of the original series.

What I hated about it was that FF12 was actually quite good! It wasn’t as good as, say, 8 or 7 but 12 had a lot of redeeming features that outweighed the bad. It was a great step forward for the giant step backward taken with FF10.

But 13…ugh. It’s like they took the bad things of EVERY game in the series and wove it into a single game. What especially pissed me off was that they designed Lightning to be “the female version of Cloud.” I was like “What!? How about you design an original protagonist instead of copying off of one of your most successful games!?”

I mean, goddamnit! 8 had its flaws, for sure, but it wasn’t a massive dump on the series like 13! Not even 9 or 10 were that bad!

I mean, seriously! If you told me, in 1997, that the Final Fantasy series would become a pile of complete and utter crap by 2010…I’d have had to kick your ass!

To think that Final Fantasy 13 is apart of the series that brought us Final Fantasies 7, 6, 4, 8, or even 9 just…ugh it’s like watching my childhood go up in flames before my very eyes.

YOU LOST YOUR MIND, MASS EFFECT 2 DEFINITLY ITS AMONG THE BESTS GAMES OF 2010, TOGHETER WITH BAD COMPANY 2 AND RED DEAD REDEMPTION, I DON’T KNOW WHAT KIND OF GAMER ARE YOU, MAYBE YOU LIKE STRATEGY OR OTHER GENRES, i don’t know about bc2 since my version is for pc, as well as my mass effect, both of them for pc and i’ve played my red dead on xbox 360, not the best game i’ve played but deserve kudos for quality and gameplay, on the pc i never can enter in a empty server on bc2, its always with 30-31 so i can be the last and enjoy a fullhouse match! and mass effect 2 WAS AWESOME, I’VE PLAYED IT FOR MOUNTHS! but yea my genre is first persons and single players rpgs, like the elder scrolls, among my favorite games of all time. what’s urs?

    Wow…those games are shit.

Also, interesting fact that you were introduced to the FF franchise via FFXIII. Bad move, partner.

Frankly, the FF franchise is as good as dead. Up to VI (and perhaps VII), it was okay. And I mean okay. But after that, it has spiraled into a massive big ball of fail and death that would never leave us apart…

But perhaps, if you dislike FF, you may give the Shin Megami Tensei franchise a try. (Problem is, you’ll need a PS2. There are no games of that franchise for the XBox360. So sad…). Spoony kind of liked it and you may ask him what game you could start with.

    Now…to wait for the 3DS…

here’s my top 3 games that pissed me off this year (didn’t really get any new games this year :( )

    3: metroid other M

team ninja may have single handedly destroyed the metroid franchise with this game, samus went from badass to wuss in 5 seconds of booting up this game, plus her voice is just annoying and the gameplay is sub par for a metroid game

    2: splinter cell conviction

i just know i’m gonna get flamed to a crisp for this one by it’s fanboys, but you know what f*** them, this isn’t splinter cell by any stretch of the imagination, too short a campaign, stealth that is possibly even more crappy then SC: DA and NO FUCKING SPYS VS. MERCS MODE?!?!?! WHAT THE F***?!?! on top of ALL THAT, they had the balls to put the most draconian style DRM ever invented by man

and my number one probably just killed any interest i had in one of my favorite game franchises ever

Command and conquer 4: tiberian twilight

this is my response to all it’s fanboys that will try and defend this PoS: F*** your cartoony graphics in a game that is supposed to be serious, F*** the lack any RTS elements, F*** the weak a** ending to the tiberian saga, f*** it’s online all the time DRM, f*** it’s short length and finally F*** it’s half a**ness, this game has offically destroyed C&C FOREVER!!!!!!!

thank you all and good day

I actually buy older games now (ones I’ve not played) and steered clear of what I could see was going to be shit this year, As well as checked reviews as not to waste money so the only game I can really say that disapointed me was… you guessed it! Final Fantasy 13!

And Joe, please, please! do not take the Final Fantasy series as all being like 13, I’d suggest playing FF1 to 7 for the better games. (9 was also pretty good I hear and.. for all the crap spoony gives 10 that was… OK at best, far better than 13.)

“FFXIII is the best in the series since VII at least in my opinion.”

      WHATTTT!!
let me just point out the team who made 7 left around 10
I dont even count FFXIII as a FF game. The battle different ,No exploring , you cant train ahead of time to get stronger
all it was, was a similarity to that FF movie that was not FF at all. I think it was called spirits within?
      Just graphic.

For me FFXIII is the worst game for PS3.

I actually liked Final Fantasy 13, specifically because it was fun to play. And no, you don’t get anywhere by just spamming auto-attack, your best chances come from choosing your moves. So if you actually know what you’re doing, the combat is like 7 but more complex. Granted, it is a little subpar when compared to other Square titles, but I enjoyed the combat and the cinematics. The linearity was grating though.

I knew Sonic Free Riders would top the list and I’m surprised Iron Man 2 made it so low on the list.

TWO Final Fantasy games for worst games of the year. Eat me Square, focus on Dragon Quest and send Final Fantasy down the trendy bowl where it belongs so we can attempt untainted memories of your older and better Nintendo FF games. Kinda like how the Prequel Trilogy ruined the Original Trilogy of Star Wars.

Mabye not that extreem, some of the new final fantasys, well sort of new, arn’t horriable. I Loved final fantasy tactics A2 and Revenent wings.
But yeah i got final fantasy 13 for almost the same reason as Joe, only difference is I played the tactics and crystal cronicals games excluding the PS one and it was HORRIABLY boring, the only fun part was the boss battle AFTER like 4 hours of wasted time, 1.5 hours of it being the endless tutorial! I just gave up after whats his face with the brass knuckles got, mystery ability.

Edit: Fable 3 deserved to be 5 not 3 in my humble opinion, although i only upgraded melee and used wind ice magic the whole game. I actually……….. died!!!!

Quite frankly, I didn’t really purchase that many bad games, mostly due to listening to what critics say most of the time and just avoid titles. There were titles that did disappoint me or made me mad at just knowing them.

    1. Crackdown 2: I really like the first game, was one of the initial reasons for me to buy a 360 at the time, but CD2 was just nothing but a re-hash with hardly any improvements and overall degraded the game.

    2. Fallout: New Vegas: Alright, maybe not so much a disappointment but rather something I just don’t get. People at my high school would not shut up about this game, and I got a good deal for the game off of Steam and was just so damn bored with it, it really did not feel like I was motivated for the game’s goals and such.

    3. Metroid: Other M: I find it amazing that even as a non-Metroid fan (simply didn’t grow up with or played these games), this game actually somehow offended me with the gross characterization of Samus, basically turning a bad ass bounty hunter into a helpless flower that can’t do anything because of her ridiculous crush on Adam. Just simply Horrendous.

    4. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm: I’ll admit this game is actually starting to slowly grow on me, but the thing is its simply not as much as the game’s fault as it is the current server/BG setup my main has. Its one thing to have ridiculously hard heroics, though in reality they ain’t that hard so much as it depends purely on the other players abilities, its another for me to have to wait a whole hour before I can get even an attempt to do a heroic. I could rant about whats wrong with my server, but I’m simply just stating the problem here, needless to say, the players here are not making it fun. Overall, Cata initially just simply kept on seeming like one huge waste of time, those entire hours wasted could have been better used on SC2, a game where on PVP I may get my ass kicked, but at least I had fun trying. Like I said, Cata is starting to get better, but overall, still a bit of a burn-out for me

I disagree with a few games on Joe’s list, but overall its reasonable, especially towards Sonic Free Riders.

LOVED the use of Guild Wars music at the sweeping scene!

I agree with the list mostly, although I could argue that FF14 is WAY worse than FF13, but regardless both were quite bad.

Really looking forward to Top 10 Best and Top 10 Most Anticipated!
(I’m hoping that Guild Wars 2 is going to be on the list, and if so #1! I know it is for me. Also looking forward to Dissidia 012!)

I think the logic behind FFXIII being higher than FFXIV is that FFXIII wasn’t what it was advertised as in everyone’s perception of an RPG. Where FFXIV was terrible and broken almost beyond repair, at least it had the fundamentals of an RPG. You’ve got quests, you’ve got an entire world to explore… what do you have in FFXIII? A rail ‘RPG’ that can barely be classed as such, with a tedious weapon upgrading system and a distinct lack of anything resembling exploration until the 10th Chapter.

Which is a shame, because not only did the story have potential (until the end, where all credibility exploded) but for how long FFXIII was in the works, I had high hopes for it… obviously that was a little naive of me. To think Square could produce anything of good quality for the franchise, any more. Pfft. I’ll learn from that lapse in judgement.

But like Spoony, I’m a tool of the franchise, doomed to buy each game in the vain hope that even a fraction of the old days makes its way back into the series… I guess we can just be happy we aren’t lured in by flashy visuals. I’ll admit FFXIII looked beautiful, but graphics don’t make a game– and neither does emulating every modern day FPS map in existence, in an RPG format. Seriously, I would love to know what they were thinking when they made it a corridor-runner…

FF13……….. I’m kinda sad I bought that game. I wish i could get those 60 hours back. even though i wanted to like it since it was supposed to remind me of FFX.

Though Spoony may hate X, I agree with his statement on FF13 and i WANTED to like FF13 but it failed in many departments and for being the only game to make me feel lonely and sorta depressed at it’s boring linear gameplay.
This is coming from someone who’s favorite final fantasy is X for it’s linearity.
Hell I played FF13 before watching Neon Genesis Evangelion and FF13 made me more lonely than the most depressing Anime show ever made. Hope is essentially Shinji if he could battle while he angsts, but at least he gets better. Even if his getting better made him man up id still rather deal with an anime wimp for 13 hours than a videogame one for 60 hours

FF 14 was a disgrace to the Final Fantasy name, and 13 was pretty good. But after the fist seven games and one learns to only expect the best, 8, 10, 12, and 13 just don’t cut it. I never played 9 or the MMO’s.

woah there. 12 was not a bad game though the licence board is inexcusable. The game itself was quite enjoyable for me cause i could tweak my characters to do stuff with a bit more strategy than the other games. plus I loved the steampunk setting instead of the futuristic setting common since FF7.

Ok my 5 worst of the year
    5. Ninety nine nights 2: Unlike the first game, nothing really original about this game like the first one, the first one each character had unique fighting style, some more suited to head on combat, some more suited to ranged attacks, this one took skins and used it for every characters, nothing special about any of them
    4. Deathsmiles: sounds like a cool title truth is its nothing more than a game like raiden trad or any other side scroller flying shooter, just with annoying music in the background
    3. Crackdown 2: Another game trying to cash in on its former, horrible game, aside from the fact your characters are pretty stale its hard to even get past the first mission you’re given because you get gunned down in about 30 secs, you die easier than the opponents and any time you die, all the enemies respawn.
    2. Resonance of fate: A cool sounding game again, and not too terrible, but so repetitive and difficult to get into the storyline, and some times you’re just left completely clueless about what you need to do, and going back and forth multiple times is just so annoying.
    1. Deadly premonition: Surprisingly some people liked this game, i dont know how, its not even a survival horror, you have a pistol with unlimited ammo, and melee weapons do more damage than a gun! Furthermore, just saying a town is a “small town” doesnt make it true, especially when I’ve seen towns smaller than the hotel in the town which had at least 200+ rooms and despite you being the only customer there, there are surprisingly a lot of “do not disturb” signs. Another nail in this coffin is that you play as an F.B.I. agent who rather than acting on reason, or putting together clues, gets his information from… COFFEE!!!!!!!!!!! no, the zombie hordes attacking you shoving thier hands down your throat didnt give it away it was the milk you poured in your coffee. And apparently people who destroy generators to prevent you from progressing obviously have a grudge against the generato, nothing else.

Thats retarded, Its a list of games he hates IN HIS OPINION and you watch it then reply even thought you don’t care for his opinion’s on these games?

Anybody who watchs AJ’s videos for a while now will know that the newer Final Fantasy’s would be on the chopping board here, Oh and personally, I was horribly disappointed by 13, I really wanted to love the first next gen console Final Fantasy but no, All I got was ripped story begginings from Final Fantasy 7 and a boring walk in this straight line game.

Thats my own take on but is impossible (and stupid) to deny that you do just walk in a straight line and that takes everything away from what Final Fantasy used to be.

The latest Final Fantasy game I enjoyed was Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core, It was relatively similar but a little more superior when walking around than FF13, Also Crisis Core had a great story to tell which is unfair on 13 due to the fact that it had to introduce new characters and such but c’mon! this is Squire Soft! (Enix) I’m sure they can do better… but well maybe for another day. or the next gen of consoles. or something…

If you think this his opinion, than I don’t blame you for thinking so, but that is no excuse to hate the game. But if there was any overrated game out there, it should be Deathspank, I only played the trial and thought it sucked so much, that there is no need to buy it, The Dialog was annoying, the controls were terrible, and one of the enemies I ran into not only won’t attack, but I could not even hurt him! And the reason why the dialog was annoying, is because Deathspank keeps saying the words “Justice” or “Fight Evil” over and over again! It’s like something out of Adam West if he wasn’t so likable! “Bad Trial” means “Bad Game!”

I don’t have a list because i didn’t play that many games last year but the worst goes to Bioshock 2, i hated how easy it was and how forgettable the story was compared to the first one. It’s like they removed all that was good about the first game in order to fit the god-awful multiplayer onto the disk.

Special mention to League Of Legends for stealing SO MUCH of my time for a game that is so bad. (and yet i still play it, what’s wrong with me?)

They’re not all from 2010, but I’ve got a Top 5 Worst Recent Games list. I only own Nintendo systems for the time being, so needless to say, my list differs completely from Joe’s.

So, in order from most angering to least:

    1. Sonic Classic Collection (press start to pause? nah, let’s make them tap the touchscreen!)
    2. Boom Blox: Bash Party (let’s remove all of the charm that made the original so awesome!)
    3. Animal Crossing: City Folk (if we add a city, they won’t notice that it’s not even as good as the first!)
    4. Scribblenauts (tons of boring levels? firemen don’t put out freaking fires? check and check!)
    5. Pokémon Battle Revolution (make the new features as badly executed as possible.)

It was really hard to make those summaries. Took a lot of restraint to limit myself to just a few complaints each.

To do those games justice, I would have to join TGWTG and give every one of them their own video rant!!

I worked for Microsoft as a promoter for Kinect. (Best job I’ve ever had up until now!!!)
    I really LOVE Dance Central!!!

Originally I was promoting only a few games:
Adventures, Kinectimals, Joy Ride, Sports, Your Shape and Dance Central

Never the less I was also permitted to try some other Kinect games – and by god – STAY AWAY FROM “DANCE PARADISE”!!!!

My rating for the other games I’ve tried (I have to ad that ALL games make MUCH more fun when playing with others!!!!):

    Adventures – 6/10
Kinectimals – RECOMMANDED ONLY FOR YOUNGER KIDS!!! N/A (personally – I HATE IT)
    Joy Ride – 5/10
    Sports – 7/10
    Your Shape – 6/10
Dance Central 9/10 (best game I’ve EVER played!)

So Joe – my most hated game of 2010 would be Dance Paradise. I wanted to try “Fighters Uncaged” because I’m a martial artist myself – never the less I was not giving the chance to try it (though I heard it is terrible a lot) – I’m sure it sux too – like you said it yourself.
    SCREW DANCE PARADISE!!!

As a martial artist and a gamer I have made one rule for myself… NEVER EVER play a motion fighting game. Reason for this? They NEVER keep up, and they can never do perfect 1-1 tracking of the actual moves, because each person’s style is slightly different. I prefer sticking to the real thing and not wasting my time or money on something that I’ll have to readjust my personal way of fighting to play. A 30FPS camera can’t hope to pick up the punch, or kick of a well trained martial artist. Hell, I’ve had regular HD video cameras catch only a blur. It is fine for a person who hasn’t had proper training, but for me, I’ll pass.

Oh great, more Final Fantasy fanboys who gave the video 1 star and thumbs-down every comment agreeing with Joe’s opinion on FFXIII. Guys, seriously, GET A LIFE!! If you honestly think that demeaning everyone else’s opinions makes you feel better and makes the game look better, trust me, it doesn’t. It just makes you look like a complete no-life troll living in your parents’ basement. All I have to say is: have fun jerking off to Lightning for the rest of your lives. As for the regular ordinary gamers who just like the game, I have no beef with you, so this doesn’t apply to you. As for the overly obsessed fanboys, then everything I said above applies to you.

Unfortunately 2010 was pretty light on the game playing for me. But I can say one bad game you should not play is TRON: Evolution. I wrote a review which is below.

I was so damn happy Disney sent me a free review copy of the game…why do all the free games I get end up being bad ones? :( However I think the reason this game frustrates me so much is that it is a total missed opportunity to make a tron game I could geekgasm over. But no…I got a prince of persia knock off with neon lights instead.

My biggest disappointment of 2010… Probably Force Unleashed 2 or Fallout: New Vegas.

Force Unleashed 2 is a straight disappointment. New Vegas is disappointing because it’s an incredibly excellent game, and yet even -still- it’s so broken that every day I’ve stopped playing it, I’ve stopped because of the fourth or fifth crash of the day. A game should not crash on CONSOLES.

As for straight-up worst played game of 2010, I don’t think I played one.

Here’s a list of my Top 5 least favorite games of 2010. They include some favorites of other people, and most/all are DLC.

    5. Raskulls (360). I tried this game at PAX. It was boring and bland.
    4. Beat Sketcher (PS3). You draw with the PS3 Move! And that’s it. I’m so glad we in the US got Sports Champions packed with the Move.
    3. Deadliest Warrior (PS3/360). The life bar is useless, and I could never get used to the controls.
    2. Super Meat Boy (360). The difficulty isn’t the problem; the problem is that it could be easier if you unlocked a specific character for that level. Plus, the character design grates me. And you go back to the start of the level if you die. This game isn’t just hard; it’s torture. This game made me so mad, I almost smacked my Xbox 360.
    1. Kung-Fu Live (PS3). I have difficulty getting this game to function the way it’s supposed to.

I don’t really have a list, but Star Wars the Force Unleased II was a bigger disappointment than I thought possible. Seriously, $50 for a five(?) level game I beat in less than 3 hours!? Yes, it’s shorter than Dog Days. I swear to God. Also, playing as a freaking Gary-stu was severely disappointing. There was absolutely no challenge to this game. The first game was actually fun to me, but not anymore. And they just stuck Yoda in it for the fanboys to cream their pants. I still have it in my room. I have no clue why I haven’t sold it yet…

Like I said on the Review, Sonic Riders was fun, Sonic Riders Zero gravity was worse because the controls were worse, just not by that much, and Free Riders (which I havent played and wont) seems uncontrollable. Its Proof Innovation doesnt always make things better. Naughty Bear, where have I heard that? *goes to Wiki* oh they made Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time and Jersey Devil, two fun games from my Childhood, cool….wait what?!?!?!? I really dont come across bad games that often, there are a few games that I do hate. Sonic 06′, Sonic and the Black Knight (I really hate the Sonic fans, they say every game thats not like the original sucks, like Sonic and the Secret Rings which controlled Fine you morons, then they claim the sequel is better even though the controls keep screwing me over? screw you guys!) and Yugioh: Destiny Board Traveller, seriously, that game was so biased when playing it. The enemies would always get the luckiest roles, The Characters are uneven, theres no Difficulty setting, it just sucks and screw anyone who says otherwise. Surprisingly enough, theres more games that people say suck, which are actually quite fun. Shadow The Hedgehog, Final Fantasy 8, 10, 10-2 and even 13 (which I barely started actually), Kingdom Hearts, Sonic Riders, almost every Sonic game I’ve played actually, that I could make a list of probably.

I found Fable III to be alot of fun, i don’t know what your freaking problem is, Joe!

Also, I find it rather hilarious how you say that you used the two MMO’s from this list as examples of MMO’s that should be included in the VGA awards ‘MMO’ section. And you complain that GEOFF made you look like a complete tool!

the game that pissed me off the most was Dead rising 2!!! it had so much potential but it fucked it up by adding 2 time limits boring and super easy boss battles and zombies too hard to run past without getting munched a few times, and about the bosses, they reused the same concepts and storys!! a mad cook, crazy person u run errands for(very fucking boring),and the army being responsible, dont get me wrong they add some cool stuff like combo’s and coop but it ruined it by making us have to rush agaisnt 2 clocks that go real fast by the way,i really hope u consider reviewing this game and giving your honest opinion

So many FFXIII apologists and defenders. Final Fantasy is a declining product. They simply just keep getting worse and lose the superior flavor and magic that it once held. This franchise needs to take a long break, it is so saturated with poor ideas and quality.

I am only disappointed it wasn’t number 1.

Plus I think Square is just a sinking ship all around and have put out a few loads of crappy games over the past few years.

Do you actually like Metroid? Well we’re going to disappoint you by making Metroid Other M, the shittiest Metroid game ever! Not only did we make the Metroid style not fun, but we also gave Samus a voice, so that she will never shut the fuck up!

Civilization 5- Everything is broken and the way archers and ranged units functions is too op for any other unit to counter. There’s no way to stop your nation from coming out of debt, once it starts spiraling out of control.
There have been players attempting to mod the game to make it playable. But it’s just inexcusable and pathetic if the gaming community has to mod the game to make it fun. Payable DLC is a retarded idea for the civilization series, if you excuse me saying. I’ve never had to pay $5 for an extra civilization or map before in Civ 3 and 4, both of which are better games anyway. They completely removed after action reviews of your civilization which pissed me the hell off. No victory movies is also a step back from what the game once was. It now takes hundreds of years to make one military unit, which can’t occupy the same space as another military unit. The whole game needs a makeover but rather than focusing on repairing the game, Sid Meier has whored himself out by choosing to make crappy dlc rather than focusing on the needs of the people who like civilization. Rather than paying for a babylonion civilization now, I’ll just mod in my own. Unless I’m a F*****g idiot im not gonna pay for dlc for Civilization.

Starcraft 2… ‘s story- Worst story i’ve ever seen in a game. I rolled my eyes and laughed by the end. Nothing got resolved. Everyone in the story is an idiot, drunk, or an asshole. Splintering storylines make players wonder what is cannon. I suspect sequel will have just as bad story so it’s not worth an expansion. Very disappointing since they’ve spent like 5 years making the game. It feels like they had the missions all completed and realized they had no script so they decided to add a story in at the last minute. Love the gameplay though, although a few multiplayer balance issues but unlike Civ V which would just make me pay for unnecessary dlc, Blizzard is at least trying to balance gameplay between the races, releasing a patch every couple of weeks or so.

Anyway, i could go on, but these games just don’t attract my attention like their predecessors did. They are disappointing in one regard or another and that’s why I chose them. That’s the bottom line.

A pretty nice list you’ve made there Joe!

I never played the latest Final Fantasy installments, but I can easily tell they aren’t too great. Although Square Enix does a nice job with the cutscenes and intro’s and such, it doesn’t really help when the gameplay sucks.

I really thought Fable III would be pretty good. Although I don’t own an Xbox 360, I’ve seen a preview at a games convention in Amsterdam (The Netherlands), and it looked pretty cool. Little did I know of the flaws of Fable II which apparently weren’t fixed in the latest of the Fable series.

Sonic Free Riders… Sigh, I already knew that this was going to suck badly. I mean, the Kinect is a nice gadget for your Xbox 360, which also does a great job with motion detecting and giving a realistic feel, but I don’t imagine ANY race game played on Kinect. And especially Sonic Riders, which isn’t that bad a game, but only the first part was fun to play, and I managed to squeeze a little fun out of the second part as well. But this… well… just looks plain awful to watch and do. Synchro racing or whatever? What the hell?

Personally, I don’t have a list. I’m not really a type of gamer that tends to play every game that comes out, I neither have the time nor money to do that. But I think Angry Joe’s list covers pretty much everything.

It was exactly the same for me when I tried out Final Fantasy XIII, wondering what all the commotion about FF was about, so I borrowed it from my brother to play it and was rather disappointed by not just the voice acting, but the way the game was so linear and, not only am I not particularly a fan of turn based combat, but it was very dull for me, lacking much in the way of things to do during combat other than select something and watch the pretty animation and so on. Didn’t get very far as it bored me pretty quickly (and yes I know, you need to keep playing to get to the good bits but it’s not worth my time really). Wasn’t a great game to introduce me to the series IMO.
Other than that, Fable III was the only other game in this list that I played, and so far, it seems okay, but I haven’t gotten very far… so we’ll see :P

Good vid, o’ great leader Joe :)

I was a little disappointed to see Star Trek Online on there. I admit, it’s not a perfect game.. Yeah it is mostly just shoot the enemy style gameplay, but I found the atmosphere and story of the game to be very fun and entertaining. Ship combat was always awesome to experience. Just as a Trek fan in general, I found it satisfying despite it’s limitations.

I knew that Sonic Riders would be Number 1 though, after the fact that it’s the first game you’ve ever given a 1/10 for.

    *Final Fantasy XIII (Xbox 360)
    *Ace Combat IV (PS2)
*Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (NDS)

Games that I loved that I played in 2010 or 2011:
    *Final Fantasy VII (PSX)
    *Zelda: Spirit Tracks (NDS)
    *Blazing Angels (Wii)

Most anticpated game of 2011: Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii)

Well, I probably played a total of 7 games this year (for the first time, anyway) and only 1 of them came out this year.
    Metal Gear Solid 1-3
    No More Heroes 2
    Metroid: Other M
    Shadow of the Colossus
    Okami
Yeah, I can’t afford to spend all of my (non-existent) money on video games. I would if I could, but I can’t.

Honestly the most disappointing was Snake Eater, but only because I don’t own it. It is one of the best games I’ve ever played. Other M gets a lot of undeserved flak in my opinion. It’s a combination of unpleasable fans and people who don’t like plot and character development. Of course, that’s not to say it was perfect; Samus’ voice acting was mediocre at best, some of the plot points were unnecessarily arbitrary and the game was extremely short, but overall it was a fun experience.

I’m definitely looking forward to 2011 for games, even if I can’t even buy any of them. The 3DS, with a new Paper Mario, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear Solid, Kid Icarus sequel, Skyward Sword, Arkham 2, Portal 2…

For that one guy saying JRPGs suck, must I remind you that some of the best games are JRPGS. Dragonquest is surprisingly good, the original Final Fantasy introduced the concept of games having a PLOT (fairly revolutionary, if you ask me) FF6 (I think? that’s the one with Kefka, right?) is one of the best games ever, and Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean (very similar to the 3D FF games) is hands-down my favorite independent game ever made (including Okami, TF2, and the entire Zelda, Metal Gear Solid and Mario series’). It has a brilliant plot, believable characters, engaging gameplay, wonderful art, a soundtrack that is equal parts beautiful and kickass, and a 60+ hour story. Some of the voice acting was less than superb, but that’s really its only flaw, and a small one at that.

Oh, and to that guy talking about Kane and Lynch and how the story ends abruptly, I quote Bloo from an episode of Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends:
“If something is THIS awesome, it doesn’t need an en–

The problem I have with the FF13 complaint, and this is something that is rampant now, is how all of a sudden the Final Fantasy series is treated one franchise, when it’s really just branding.

FF13 is a terrible first game for someone new to the franchise. Motomu Toriyama, the director of FF13 directs and designs his games much differently than say matsuno, Nomura or Sakaguchi, and FF13 is a continuation of many of the design choices that were in FF8 or FF10. if you didn’t grow up with those games, you are not going to like FF13. FF9 (Sakaguchi) or FF12 (Matsuno) or even KH(Nomura), which has a much different focus
    could be up your alley.

It annoys me when people bash the franchise, not the game. SE could just pick one type of game to make, and reinvent the wheel every few years like others(Fable) but then they would be bashed for being lazy. SE tries different things, different directors and they get bashed for not being appealing to every gamer and the franchise is in “trouble”

the 2 previous Sonic Riders games are a couple of my favorite racing games of all time. I’m disappointed that Free Riders ended up so bad, but I’m sad to say I’m not surprised.

Free Riders had every sign of being a bad Sonic game, just like ’06 before it. No nintendo release, launch title for a new system, using a peripheral as a gimmick…Looking back, I can see the poor thing had NO chance. Too bad it was released when it was, because Sonic was all set for a big revival with 3 GREAT games (Sonic 4, and the 2 versions of Colors) and this mutated 4th brother shambles in the room and pukes on the floor, tainting opinions of the whole lot.

I agree with 90% of this list EXCEPT the FFXIII placement as it gets alot of undeserved heat. The story whilst not the greatest is still ALOT deeper than recent games. FFXII was mostly background story, X-2 lets not get into that,. You are saying it’s worse than Fable III, Iron man 2 and FFXIV that’s really a stretch and theres a dude who said you can beat FFXIII by bashing the A button, really?. I should try that and proberly fail as some of the battles get really challenging later in the game. It is a game you have to patience for, im not a huge fan of it and agree it could be better but it does not deserve this placement in Joe’s list.

Was it placed there because you could not find a number 2 slot because Kayne and Lynch being better is just laughable. Hell I would rather play FFX-2 than that shit.

FF13: Honestly thought it’d be lower since I thought the story was somewhat pleasing. The only problem was the gameplay was tedious as hell. I wouldn’t mind linear games so much if the pacing would pick up better, or if the leveling system was done better. I mean my god, I do enough grinding on WoW as it is, the only time I would grind in an JRPG is if I’m slightly underleveled since otherwise I could probably beat a boss or two, not to waste my time leveling a weapon or stat tree!

FF14: My computer was crappy to the point where the game lagged for me. Even then the controls were busted. It’s a shame too since it looked like the story would have been pretty awesome. Too bad we’ll never see it conclude given how bad it’s done.

Kane and Lynch: Never played, but if your game’s ending is so abrupt like that, then the writer should retire, plain and simple.

Fable III: Sat through the list once, watched people play it, my god what have they done to Fable?

Sonic Free Riders: I’m no Sonic fan, I do enjoy a few games and would like to play games like Sonic 4 and Sonic Colors (I hear they’re good), but geez, Sega needs to stop making broken games and putting Sonic on them since all it’ll do is make the character look bad. Sonic wouldn’t be in this state if Sega took the time to actually make a good game instead of trying to market him to death. Hopefully whatever fan-feedback to Sega from Sonic 4 will help in building the second episode. I wouldn’t want Sonic to die out because of Sega’s inability to make games fun and enjoyable, and actually functional.

    Overall, a very nice list.

Joe, as a fan of your show and someone who watches old episodes just for the fuck of it, I have to ask whats been up lately with the sound quality?

Both this episode and the 32 reasons why Fable 3 is a shitty game video had sound quality, to put it nicely, that was less then stellar. Parts of this one sounded like you were eating the microphone then suddenly you were echoing like you backed into a hallway. In the Fable 3 video (as well as quite a few parts of this video) your sound level was up way WAY too loud which only made it worse when you decided you needed to yell about something.

Usually your production values are much better then this and It just feels like they’ve slipped a little in the month or so this sites been up.

Any way, my top 5 worst games of last year were:

    5) Fist of the North Star: Theres always been something about FotNS thats drawn me in.. I think its got something to do with those REALLY old ads for the FotNS games that used to be all over comic books when I was a kid.. Well I got suckered into Nostalgia this time and lost big. This game was complete crap.

    4) Vanquish: I’m sorry sliding around and getting cheaply insta-killed by bosses that take way to long to kill even when you know what to do just isn’t fun.. I also greatly enjoyed being cheap right back and became virtually invincible once I found the sweet spot of various broken environment pieces.. I won’t miss this title if it never gets a sequel.

    3) Darkvoid: Man, I remember the hype they tried to build for this game.. Then the reviews came.. Then people actually played it.. I don’t think I’ve ever played a game based around flight that had worse controls..

    2) Final Fantasy XIII: I’m one of those rabid Final Fantasy fan boys you always hear about. I’ve played everything Final Fantasy I’ve been able to ever get my hands on and have tried to experience every other form of media the series has ever had to offer. Final Fantasy XIII had me, for lack of a better term, excited in about Final Fantasy again. This game (and Castlevania Lords of Shadow) was the reason I bought this this generations consoles.

    Then I played the game…

And I think that’s where I’m going to stop this entry, because its just going to be the same things you’ve all heard from everyone else who despises this game. This game should have been #1 on my list but recently somethings edged it out by a few hundred miles.

    1) World of Warcraft: Cataclysm: Ok I’m cheating here with an expansion to a 6+ year old game but after playing the game for all of those 6+ plus years and everything I’ve experienced in the game from launch day I think I can safely say that this expansion was literally cataclysmic to the entire structure of the game and the mentality of its player base. This expansion made this game fucking toxic.

Is it just me or does the Sonic Riders series reflect the Sonic franchise itself?

I mean the first game, while it may not have bought anything new to the genre, was a solid and fun little racer. For the second game Sega naturally decided to throw everything that made the first game fun out the window and turned it into an overcomplicated mess. The third game, oh God why?

Most disappointing game of the year? Other M. It’s not a bad game but filled with so many stupid moments.

Joe, I like that you don’t make top 10 lists for a year until it’s over. That’s how it should be done.

:) You must feel silly yelling like that in the intro.

    1:33 Stretched textures.

Joe looks so funny in his Iron Man helmet.

#7 What do you expect? Of course a dev’s not going to say, “yeah our game sucks”.

#6 You’ve got balls Joe. A later release date for Deus Ex doesn’t necessarily mean less funds. On the contrary, it means more payment for milestones. Either Deus Ex is behind its’ production schedule or (more likely as a reaction to FF) higher-ups at SE decided to give it more timein Beta before going Gold.

11:30 Texture fighting on the tail of the plane.

13:57 Joe, it’s in line w/Peter’s vision. He doesn’t know what an RPG is. He wants every game to be a sim that doesn’t stress the player with any challenges. Remember, his great innovation for Fable 2 was a dog and he was convinced no one had ever had a pet or character players bonded with in a game before. He’s delusional.

#2 You’ve got balls and good taste Joe. Folks like JRPGs b/c they like anime/manga conventions. That’s it. Good RPGs are western RPGs like Fallout New Vegas, Mass Effect 2, etc. Sadly Joe, the franchise is in no trouble. Fanboys will buy any FF game no matter how much it sucks.

#1 Aren’t we glad M$ and Sony brought wii shovelware to their consoles.

I almost totally agreed with this list, until you said Final Fantasy 13………and before you ask NO im not a fan boy of Final Fantasy……i only played 4, 10, and 7 and now 13 too…… 13 is not that bad, i admit its slow going at first but it really picks up…….The graphics are amazing, and the story really gets good…..in your list you said you never played a final fantasy game before, and you just gave up, then its not your type of game. i don’t see why its so high on your list. Its like me saying .”I never played a Mario game, so i played mario galaxy 2, and i got bored, so its a bad game. and now its my number 3 on my Top 10 Worst Games ever” see how that’s not fair. maybe if you went into more details why you think its bad, i will understand. .. whats more shocking is that its so high on your list, so you would rather play Final fantasy 14 then 13… I mean come on Joe, ever if your not a fan, its not as bad as 14.

Movie licensed games in general tend to be poorly made and shoved out the door to make a quick buck, there are very very VERY few exceptions to that.

I gave up on Final Fantasy at 10. And guess what.. just like Final Fantasy 10-2, they’re making a Final Fantasy 13-2! Goodie gumdrops! It seems like they always want to make sequels to the worst games in the franchise.

Because I’m broke, I didn’t get to play a lot of new games. But the worst one I DID play was Fallout: New Vegas. Yeah. It’s not that it’s a bad game altogether (It’s really fun!), it’s that it is SOOOOOOO glitchy and messed up! I’ve found myself wandering the wasteland for a VERY long time, only to get stuck on a rock and have to load from the last save. Not only that, but the AI does some pretty stupid stuff. Like how Old lady Gibson and her dogs just suddenly teleport to the Helios One base and start trying to kill me for no reason. Not just me either. It happened to my brother. AND how I was using some dynamite on an enemy, and it FLEW up into the air and wouldn’t come back down. Not to mention spots where the frame rate drops for no reason, AND if I play for too long, the load time for when I go through a door starts to reach 1 minute. Might not seem so bad, but go run numerous missions in Freeside and see if you are thinking the same thing. So Joe, AVOID THIS GAME if you are not a Fallout fan.

I probably played 10 games the entire year that came out 2010 so I’m not equiped to make any top lists and I didn’t play any of these games or any of those games Joe didn’t play either so I guess the games I did play weren’t all that bad and as I think about the games I played I’d say the very worst games were at least okay so I won’t drop any names.

What I do want to say is how awesome Joe’s reaction is in the Risen review about the map system.

“What a piece of shit! That’s what it is!!”

The voice cracking and everything, that is just heeelarious.

in my opinion i agree with the people who said Final Fantasy 13 gets better over half the way through, i am only on the second disc and it is getting better and more interesting although there is too many cut-scenes and the battles are too short compared to its predecessors (which weren’t great either) but they changed the battle style from ff12 style which i liked to this one which is terrible, i think that these final fantasy games aren’t good because most of the effort is in the kingdom hearts and dragonquest sagas which are better in every way, and if you don’t believe me play final fantasy 4(remake) and then play dragonquest 9, there are huge simularities

Risen (along with Divinity 2) was a nice game on the PC, but it requires too many buttons to do spells and stuff, I find it plausible that it sucks on consoles.

And though I don’t have any current-gen gaming console, you made your point on the other games, they do sound horrible indeed. And about Sonic Free Riders…. I get sick easily, even from traveling by CAR, so I imagine the game would literally kill me…..

There was only one game that I was really looking forward to throughout all of 2010. It was a game that I was looking forward to since I played Crackdown, that game is APB. I was so excited for it’s release that I signed up for the beta playing all four or so hours that it gave you happily immediately signing up for a month of game time.

As time went on however the small easily fixable flaws in the game play started to show and time after time we were promised that it was going to be fixed. But when they finally announce that the game changing patch is coming out within the next day I was all like ‘Yeah this is gonna be awesome! :D ’ I log on to find it’s being shut down for good. :\ To me this was my biggest disappointment of 2010…

Final Fantasy XIII was seriously one of the worst abomanations of the year. I expected so much more and better from a Final Fantasy game, yet i got a piece of garbage that i throw up over. The game is assly lazy in story telling, it makes want to puke.

Also the game play (if there is any) Is just retarded. Press 1 button and you win!!!! omg omg..

if Square wants to make movies so bad, then make fucking movies instead of crappy final fantasy games.

oh what? The full name is “Final Fantasy: Spirits Within”? Well that doesn’t make sense… Did they just slap on the Final Fantasy name to sell tickets? It had NOTHING to do with the series.

So yeah…. Spirits Within wasn’t a terrible movie in it self… But it was no Final Fantasy movie. Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children was much better in that respect.

How people defend FF13 astounds me.

“The story is good.” No, its not, it makes no sense. Even the characters say it makes no sense. The point (using the term loosely) of the story of FF13 is no one knows what the hell is going on. The world you’re allegedly meant to protect or destroy (cause no one knows) is hollow. You never really interact with it in any significant fashion so it becomes impossible to care.
“The characters are good.” Hahahaha…. Lightning is a Squall ripoff (and a less likable version of him), Vanille is a squeak toy, Hope is a whining sociopath. Snow, Fang, and The black guy who’s name I can’t remember how to spell are “okay”. Fang, as hot as she is, is two dimensional “tough girl” at best. Snow is a pedo (he is).Black Guy is the only character there with any real depth.

“The combat is fast and exciting” No, the combat LOOKS fast. It’s a visual trick. It distracts you from the fact you can just press “auto attack” over and over again and win basically every battle. In actuality, the combat is painfully slow because of the massive health of nearly everything you run into, unless you take the effort to paradigm shift which is broken (since instantly refills your APB bar if you time it properly) and lets you get two rounds in back to back. Excluding maybe the very end game dungeon, you NEVER need to change roles to win/

“It gets better after 20 hours!” Bullshit! BULL F***ING SHIT! After 20 hours it dumps you into 1 “open” zone which has no more interesting side quests than go here and kill this then come back. That’s what MMOs make you do! Then after you get bored doing that, it sets you back on the railroad. I can diagram FF13 for you |————————————–O—-|

“It’s pretty.” Okay, I’ll give ya that.

“Other stupid praise.” There’s no exploration, the character stat growth is even more needlessly obtuse and time consuming than FF10′s sphere grid, it’s short for a JRPG, the weapon crafting is even more annoying and time consuming than the stat growth.

I’m normally not one to do this, but if you think this game is “good” you are either a mindless fanboy or have no grasp of a quality game.

I was also very disappointed by FF XIII, Syveria exactly pointed the things out, i was gonna to mention. The Shame is, i really like JRPG’s. I was a huge Square Fan, Back in the 16bit era, and after missing FF 9-12 (my sister had a ps1, but i always had Nintendo-Consoles) i was really looking forward for a new FF. But after what i’ve seen and heard of FF X (X-2) and my personal experiences with FF XIII, i’d say: If you want a good 3D JRPG, you have to look somewhere else.

If you have an XB360 and want a good jrpg, than go fetch Lost Odyssey. It’s not perfect, i know, i. e. the combat system is really waaay too old-school, but in terms of story, characters, world… FFXIII doesn’t hold a candle against LO… And this Game is now 3 Years old.

Also there were two more, to me, very disappointing Games last year. AvP and of course Metroid Other M. Oh, Other M, what have you done. ‘Till about may or june of last year, i never really played any Metroid Game. Then I started with Super Metroid. Shortly after i ran through every Game in the Series (except for 2) within 2 months. And then came Other M. What a smack in the face for a fan, and i considered myself to be one after my Metroid-Marathon.

And it isn’t even really a bad game. The controls are good, the graphics are (for wii-standards) great, and the story is, well not good or original, but not bad either. In Fact, i think Other M would have been a really good game, if it wasn’t a Metroid. Poor Samus…

Joe, you’re wrong about Final Fantasy. You didn’t just happen to come in on two bad entries of the series; the whole series is simply godawful, or at least it has been since the PS1. The SNES entries were fun, I enjoyed 7, and 9 was decent, but 8, 10, X-2, 11, 12, 13, and 14 are all just freaking horrid. That it has any fans left at all is a testament to the power of fanboyism.

The absolute worst game of the year for me was Final Fantasy XIII. I’ve played and loved every Final Fantasy game, even ones that I didn’t think I would, including VIII. (Even though, Zell > Squall)
There was nothing for me to like in that game. Bad characters, stories, retarded combat system.. ugh.

    My list, though:
    5. Iron Man 2
    4. Alpha Protocol
    3. N3 II
    2. Kane and Lynch 2
    1. Final Fantasy XIII

I’m very easy to please when it comes to games. HOWEVER, that’s partially because I avoided the games that my friends actually said “Dude, don’t play that game.” (As it stands, Joe is one of the only reviewers whose opinion I trust.)

I played FFXIII all of the way through. God help me but its story was almost as senseless as FFVIII.

    Evil Transformer God: “Kill Orphan!”
Most PCs: “No! We are free individuals who can make up our own minds!”
Fang (one of the PCs): “Agreed. In fact, I’m such an individual I think most of my party members are idiots.”
Most PCs: “Don’t leave us! We must be individuals as a unified group!”
    Fang: “Okay.”
Evil Transformer God: “Last chance! Kill Orphan!”
    PCs: “Never!”
    Orphan: “Hi. I’m Orphan.”
    PCs: “KILL IT!”
    Cue bad guys winning.
Cue random deus ex machina saving the day IN THE MIDDLE OF A VIDEO SCENE THAT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR ACTIONS EARLIER IN THE GAME!

    *weep*

At this point I’m just going to hold out and pray for FFXV to have some redeeming quality. I love the technology influence on the series, but honestly I think the game needs to go back to its fantasy roots for a bit and actually try to build an epic, complex, yet coherent story that allows for exploration in a massive world. In the meantime, at least I can replay 1, 4, 4-2, 5, 6, 7, 9, 12, and tactics (REAL tactics, not that advanced crap).

I’m probably one of the few people who honestly loves Final Fantasy XIII, then again, I play more for the story then exploration or strategy. That being said, I still loved the battle system.
Oh, but if you don’t like Final Fantasy XIII, then you may wanna skip out on the recently announced Final Fantasy XIII-2.
However, there is a sequel to a good Final Fantasy spin-off, called Dissidia: Final Fantasy, being made. Its an RPG-Fighter Hybrid called Dissidia 012: Final Fantasy (012 being pronounced Duodecim). The first was considered by many to be a good game.

As for the list, I have, fortunately, not played a single game I considered bad this year (even if Final Fantasy XIII and Fable III were on you’re List, Joe). Then again, I haven’t had the opportunity to play many games this year, not even through rentals.

I hated both 12 and 13 so don’t know where that puts me. Also, if you play FF games for the story.. why would you like 13? The story is dull as all hell and at the same time is so convoluted it makes no sense. The series started going downhill after 7 but it didn’t start rubbing its face in the jagged rocks below until 12 (Yes, even X-2 was better.)

Not to sound mean but this sounds like someone who loves everything Square-Enix puts their stamp on.

I’d like to say I have some hope for 13-2, but I can’t. I smell a Crisis Core rip off with less iconic (read, unlikable) characters.

I thought both 12 and 13 were mediocre. 12 because it was mediocre all around (story, characters, gameplay, the works), 13 because it had good combat but a terrible story and a mixed bag of terrible-to-passable characters.

Then again, I’m not really a Final Fantasy fan, just a JRPG fan who has been trying all the FF games he can get his hands on for the past few years in the hopes of understanding why the series is so popular. I’ve failed at that so far, but I still haven’t gotten to the games of the series that get the most praise, 6 and 7, so there’s still those I suppose.

I’ve been watching your show for a while, Joe, though this is my first time commenting. Thanks for all the laughs.

I have to disagree with a lot of what you said about STO. It sounds like you were expecting it to be a single player RPG, and didn’t really understand that it was an MMO (though you called it that frequently). A lot of the criticisms you gave it sounded like the things you do in MMOs. It makes me question if you really know much about MMOs if you criticize one for genre-defining aspects.

As someone who’s been playing MMOs for upwards to eight years, I feel like you don’t really ‘understand’ the genre. It has its quirks, and lots of those quirks are things that individuals new to the world of MMOs don’t like, or think are somehow bad. How many MMOs have you played Joe? Just curious… I bet I am way off, but I don’t think you’ve played too many.

The rest of your list was good though. FFXIV was an abysmal creation that should be banished to the darkest corner of hell. I was really looking forward to the game until I got into beta heh.

good list i knew fable 3 would be there but seriously final fantasy 13 really isnt that bad its way better then 12 and i honestly liked it over 10 and 10 2 as well. the truth is aside form 9 and maybe 7 (mostly to avoid a flame mob) there will probably never be a 3d final fantasy even remotely as close to how good the 16 bit era was to the series ff6 may be my all time favorite game ever. 13 was linear and i hated how uneventful the ultimate weapons were but it is by no means a horrible game it had good graphics and a decent story as well as less characters that made me want to hang myself after seeing them, hope being the only really annoying one vs 8 having squall rinoa selphie and zell 10 having wakka tidus and yuna , it is lacking but it still gives alot . but enough gimmicks square world ends with you was great make more unique games and make a kingdom hearts with a number again im getting tired of these detours although birth by sleep is one of the best rpgs to come out all year.
