I agree with a lot of the list, outside of Star Trek Online and FFXIII.

I had a one year subscription to STO, and while I didn’t play it all the time, what I did play I enjoyed. You can complain about lack of diplomatic stuff, but a lot of gamers just want to blow shit up. There’s been a LOT of improvements since the game came out though. There is a system of diplomatic missions in place now, there’s three difficulty settings for missions that improve the loot you get, and they have some very interesting quest that they release as sets over a course of a month. I’m not subscribed now but it’s because I don’t have a credit card. It’s not a WoW killer but it’s still good.

As for FFXIII, I have no idea why everyone hates on the game. Okay so the combat got dumbed down, I didn’t mind. As far as “open world exploration”, NONE of the Final Fantasy games had that. I don’t know why people keep saying they do. EVERY Final Fantasy game is linear. You follow a path and go from point A to point B for 90% of the game and then at the end you get an airship and can fly around doing whatever. GUESS WHAT?! Final Fantasy XIIi is EXACTLY the freaking SAME! The only difference being they took from an overhead view and set it behind the player and put you in a corridor. And they didn’t put it towns because the storyline dealt with characters being FUGITIVES who were wanted DEAD so they couldn’t very well show up in town!

Anyway, the rest of the list is alright.

I don’t have a list, but if I had to choose the worst game I played 2010, it would have to be Halo Reach. I’ve never played a game that had such a dreadful single player, which had no characters who I liked or was sad to see go, AND had such an ass-backwards multiplayer, which was made so that even the best Halo players could barely fight 2 n00bers at the same time. I felt like this game was made for people who had never played a Halo game, over long-time fans like me, and it was such a big letdown for me. JUST MY OPINION THOUGH.

As for FF XIII, I think it’s a good game. I don’t like it as a Final Fantasy game, though. If they gave it a different name, I would have been okay with that. No, this game doesn’t live up to the Final Fantasy standards. You need exploration, more customizations, more secrets, THE RIGHT FREAKING VICTORY MUSIC, side quests, and a lot more! I would have enjoyed this game more if I wasn’t so disappointed that it had the Final Fantasy name attached to it. I hope you all understand what I mean by that. LOL The older games were so much deeper in detail in the way of what you could do and how the game was played.

Joe you are COMPLEATLY right about naughty bear. Its a rushed “horror” game with only one fucking level in the entire game and no replay value. If it werent for for the final fantasy games (that franchise needs to die!) and fable 3 it would be my worst game of 2011. Plus to any one reading this dont buy Naughty bear, the final fantasy games and fable 3.

Don’t know if I’ve got a top ten but got a few that was disappointed with for sure.
Just to pick some out on the list, definitely Fable 3 was disappointing again blown out of proportion by Peter Molyneux.

I liked how my friend gave me a warning about saving money and how I then left the game playing while I did other stuff, it just felt like a poor way to lengthen the game. Why do I have to repair properties individually? Why can’t I just repair all, just busy work, also it seemed a lot shorter than the past two games with that part taken out.

Alpha Protocol I was really looking forward to, thought it would be like Mass Effect, but the part I played never seemed that great, I tended to melee everyone as it seemed more effective than using guns most of the time. I didn’t really like the conversation system, I can see a time limit can make you decide more quickly and possibly be more like who you are than who you are trying to be, but shouldn’t I be able to choose? I wasn’t sure exactly what response would be like till I chose it and it wasn’t what I wanted meaning my character was not coming across how I wanted, which as a player I feel I should be able to do, especially in a ROLE PLAYING GAME.

Iron Man 2 I rented and thought would be bad and it was, plus it gave me an annoying uneven achievement. I know that shouldn’t be a major gripe but this goes out to all developers, no odd point achievements I like my score to end with a 0 or a 5, it just looks right, better etc.

Final Fantasy XIII was alright but I haven’t finished it have stalled so I suppose that says a lot. Why are pretty much all the characters unlikeable, they are either annoying or weird. Hope is so whiney it defies all known natural laws in the universe, but then he tries to be all badass and it gets even worse.

Kane and Lynch 2 played the demo that was enough thought the first game though no masterpiece had some good set pieces in it and had potential for a better sequel, but no just the rubbish that was released.

The biggest disappointing game of 2010 for me though was Star Wars Force Unleashed 2. I was really looking forward to this I know not everyone is a fan of the first, but I did like it. It wasn’t perfect but i enjoyed and as I saw more of the FU2 i was more and more excited. I even pre-ordered the special edition which I then didn’t pick up.
    *Semi-spoiler warning*
I mean they managed to make a fight with Vader the most iconic villain of the series….boring. I t was just so dragged out and dull, I mean that is a challenge. The bit with Yoda is also rubbish, it’s about 30 seconds long and only a few words are exchanged.

Think that’s got to be it for me as afar as I can remember, so nice one Joe.

Well Joe you asked so here are my ten worst of 2010.

    10. Darksiders. Not bad really just bland and forgettable
    9. force unleashed 2. second verse same as the first
    8. alpha protocol. pretty much the same reasons you hated it Joe
    7. Dragonball raging blast 2. the dragonball fighting games are my favorite fighting games of all time. this one however is bogged down by horrible controls, screen tearing, and frame rate chugging that just make it an unplayable mess.
    6. Stargate resistance. Cutting the funding to stargate worlds then using the half finished pieces of what could have been a great game to make a generic mess of an online shooter… FAIL!
    5. Metroid other m. decent game play but everything else… I never thought i would say this ever in my entire life but fuck you team ninja.
    4. aliens vs. predator. a lackluster forgettable shooter. It’s avp, it should have been awesome, how did this happen!
    3. Final fantasy 14. Just…ugh
    2. APB. This could have been great. it had so much potential. but it was squandered by the terrible physics engine, lackluster game play, and some of the worst servers I’ve ever seen an MMO hosted on.
    1. The last airbender the game. A shitty movie tie in game of an even shittier movie that sodomizes a great TV show. The mere existence of this game makes me incoherent with rage.

@ Mr. Gunns: As stated in my post, my list specified, as Mr. Joe requested, the most “disappointing” games of 2010. Not the worst, as (considering the amount of independent and/or low budget games out there) none of those in my list or Mr. Joe’s would qualify as the “worst”. This is also my opinion. If you liked ME2, more power to you, and I’m glad you felt you received your money’s worth.

As far as reason, my primary reason is the actual narrative itself. While I have issues with aspects of the gameplay, companions, and campaign progression, it is the narrative itself that infuriated me as it progressed and has prevented me from venturing a second playthrough.

    ****
Note: The remainder of this post will contain spoilers regarding ME2′s plot. Please do not continue reading if you have not played ME2 and do not wish to ruin the plot of this game for yourself.
    ****

The narrative, from the minute you meet cigarette smoking man (Cerberus), insists that the Prothean bugs (Collectors) are a major threat, and your mission to defeat the Collectors is a one-way ticket, with no hope of survival and only a slim chance of success.

This is a fine setting for a game’s narrative. So what does Shepherd do?

    1) Spends 90% of the cutscenes whining (in a nice or evil manner) how they’re all going to die, how it’s a suicide mission, how there’s no chance of survival….

    2) Spends 66% of the game recruiting random individuals to follow him into hell. In most game stories, recruitment missions are necessary, as the hero’s party has no supplies or soldiers, and needs to work his/her way back into the spotlight (DA:O) or prepare for the coming battle (FFVI onward?). This is shown to be pointless in ME2 though, as cigarette smoking man constantly feeds you supplies, soldiers, and crew free of charge, any of which Shepherd could have just selected for his mission. On top of this, with the exception of Mordin’s (and arguably Tali’s), none of these missions have any bearing on the overall plot of the story, serving as glorified side-missions.

So, with the exclusion of the opening mission, the midway mission, and the finale, nothing you ever did had any point to the overall narrative, serving instead of busywork to fluff out the game.

The ending level compounds this. What Shepherd spent the entire game moping over turns into a cakewalk compared to other missions he/she has already faced. Even without a full crew (previously abducted, leaving 1 man and 1 AI to pilot the ship), you’re able to board the supposed ‘juggernaut’ ship that already humiliated the original and current Normandy each once already. After a few lacklusted firefights, you encounter one of the most anti-established-canon bosses ever (the Human-Reaper more or less spits in the face of what the Protheans, Saren, and Sovereign beat into our heads in ME1 about the Reapers), stroll back to your ship (with all or some of your ‘super’ team you’ve spent the entire game assembling), and deliver the standard Shenmue 2 ending to build hype for the final sequel.

The issue that ruins this narrative for me is it never felt like it knew what it was doing.

      Continuation…

The issue that ruins this narrative for me is it never felt like it knew what it was doing.

In ME1, the story is a chase after Saren and the unknown. You do not know where Saren is, so it is a hunt to discover his location and unravel the mystery of the Reavers, Protheans, and Saren’s plan. The side-missions in ME1 are acceptable, as you’re still on the chase, and any little bit of information acquired could lead to the clue that cracks the mystery.

In DA:O, the story is a rebuilding of the order and avenging your fallen comrades. You have nothing and are being pursued by an overwhelming force that threatens to destroy the realm and a tyrant that wants you erased to cover his own misdeeds. It’s a constant fight for survival against two fronts all the while attempting to build an army that can combat the great evil. The side missions in DA:O are acceptable, as you’re trying to strengthen your army to face the evil and find a way to unify your efforts with the tyrant that wants you dead against that very evil, whether that involves an uneasy alliance or overthrow of his empire.

In ME2, the story is to gather a team of random individuals because a man with a smoking habit stated they may be helpful. Even though cigarette smoking man literally built your body and gave you an amazing ship, a crew of some of (by his own admission) the best in the business, unlimited resources, and a map of where to go and what to do, you instead spend the entire game wandering the known galaxy looking for lost souls to add to your crew of aces, gathering resources you could have just asked for, and developing weapons and equipment you could have just bought/commissioned from your numerous contacts. Side Missions are pretty much the entire game, and serve no purpose to the plot whatsoever but to make your recruits more willing to face death (too bad you had an entire crew from the start just as willing without you having to kiss their boo boos).

And that is my primary issue with ME2. The entire game feels like a waste of time, as that is all your character is doing despite the looming crisis. It’s as though you were playing FFVI, and instead of gathering the Returners and Espers, you spent the second half of the game as Terra nursing babies until the end when you faced Kefka. When a game is so narrative focused, the game needs to actually contribute to that narrative, whether its as simple as Saints Row or as massive as Metal Gear Solid 4, as confusing as Final Fantasy Tactics or as straightforward as Arcadia IV. ME2 just feels like King’s Quest 2, where after you finish you stop and go “Why did I do that again?”

      ****

I hope that satisfies your request. Let us not derail this topic though. If you enjoyed ME2, whether massively or only mildly, then good for you. You proved to be a smarter consumer than I. However, for as much as I loved Mass Effect 1 and Biowares other games, and for how surprised I was by Dragon Age Origins, I had let my hopes get very high for ME2. In my opinion, the game massively underperformed, and thus is why it was, in my opinion, my biggest Disappointment (not worst game) of 2010.

Liked the list, Joe, I really did. I have to disagree about Fable III being on the list, though.

Was it anywhere near as good as the awesomeness of the first game? No, not really. But was it a bad game? No, not really either. It wasn’t especially good, I concur that much, but it didn’t induce massive hair-tearing anger and hatred toward what a franchise has become.

THAT honor is reserved for Force Unleashed 2. And really, THAT should have been on your list, not Fable III.

Most of your list didn’t surprise me. There were two entries that I WAS surprised about. The Final Fantasies. I didn’t think you played them, and I can understand FFXIV being on there (as it’s pretty much borked SE’s release schedule as you said) but XIII’s reason for being on there really made me sad.

Namely that that horrendous abomination was your introduction to the series.

That game is… Auuugh. I don’t get the fans who still defend this thing. It’s a hallway simulator. It might as well be a glorified SCREEN SAVER that requires you to fight a random battle every time you want to return to your desktop! Oh, and wherein logging back into your computer requires you to watch a 5 minute long cutscene where the characters exposite endlessly about things we don’t care about. Or where Vanille has to amp up the lolicon horrors another level.

Final Fantasy hasn’t been been good for over a decade. I don’t think the fanbase has had to suffer quite as much as the Sonic fanbase, but it’s definitely been terrible. I myself used to count myself among their fans–again–ten years ago. After X… …eh…

…it hurts when you realize that you can no longer love something that brought you so much happiness as a child. The sad thing is I still watch the company, praying that they’ll release something halfway decent. WTF is wrong with me?!

Square Enix. Stop sucking. Just stop it. Please.

I agree. Final Fantasy 13 was nothing short of a gigantic massive dump upon the awesomeness of the original series.

What I hated about it was that FF12 was actually quite good! It wasn’t as good as, say, 8 or 7 but 12 had a lot of redeeming features that outweighed the bad. It was a great step forward for the giant step backward taken with FF10.

But 13…ugh. It’s like they took the bad things of EVERY game in the series and wove it into a single game. What especially pissed me off was that they designed Lightning to be “the female version of Cloud.” I was like “What!? How about you design an original protagonist instead of copying off of one of your most successful games!?”

I mean, goddamnit! 8 had its flaws, for sure, but it wasn’t a massive dump on the series like 13! Not even 9 or 10 were that bad!

I mean, seriously! If you told me, in 1997, that the Final Fantasy series would become a pile of complete and utter crap by 2010…I’d have had to kick your ass!

To think that Final Fantasy 13 is apart of the series that brought us Final Fantasies 7, 6, 4, 8, or even 9 just…ugh it’s like watching my childhood go up in flames before my very eyes.

Per your request Mr. Joe, my top 10 “Disappointing” games.

    10) Red Dead Redemption
Somehow, I’m still failing to see the fascination the general public has with this title. Arguably one of the most boring titles I’ve purchased, strolling around the same brown dirt for hours, repeating the same escort task for every mission. Sorry Mr. Joe, but this is one title we vastly differ our opinions.

    9) Star Wars Force Unleashed II
When you set the bar low, you can’t be too disappointed. Or so I thought, but yet again Mr. Lucas has proven me a fool. Here I was thinking this franchise would be the rebirth of Jedi Academy, and maybe needed a bad launch title to get in gear. Oh well, at least it gives me another reason to hate the prequels. (>^_^)>

    8) Fable III
Broken game is broken. That is all.

    7) Heavy Rain
Here I was, thinking there’d be a game somewhere in here. Well… you can turn the pages on the instruction manual, and open & close the case…

    6) Final Fantasy XIII
You and half the internet’s covered the problems with this title. As Mr. Spoony has stated time and again, this franchise died once it left the PSX. Shame too, Final Fantasy V, VI, VII, & Tactics remain some of my all time favorite titles.

    5) Metroid Other M
I have a pet peeve that this game tramples all over: Taking strong female leads and turning them into sex symbols or weaklings. This game arguable does both, and to one of the strongest, most determined characters in gaming, all because she’s female. If we needed to see battered women or sex symbols, we’d watch lifetime or buy a porn. We don’t need games doing.

    4) Crackdown 2
Expectations high. Game slightly broken, but overall just bland. Crackdown is still one of my favorite titles of this console generation, Crackdown 2 I almost blanked from my memory until now.

    3) Battlefield Bad Company 2
First, let me say this. Battlefield 2142 is, alongside Starsiege Tribes (yes, the original 90s version), my favorite FPS of all time. Of all time, as a certain rapper would repeat. My hopes for BC2 were beyond high, especially with the number of hours I sunk into the demo alone. Why does this rank so high? Because the game is next to impossible to play online. I’m not joking, do a google search. The entire time I owned this game for 360, I could not connect once to online-play. Eventually, I returned it when the ‘return limit’ from Gamestop was approaching and received my refund. This may not be fair on the game itself, but the servers are part of a game this online-intensive, so I feel it is a fair grievance.

    2) Sonic 4
Another example of HIGH, oh so HIGH expectations. I knew I had no reason to expect good. I knew I had no reason to expect average. Still, I hoped in vain… and… still hoping. If you recall Mr. Joe’s preview video of Sonic 4 at E3, the fears he expressed, you know why I’m fuming as I type this. Though the next title may be responsible for that as well…

    1) Mass Effect 2
I keep this game visible whenever I’m playing a game on my 360, Wii, Dreamcast, PS2, Genesis, or NES. Why? So no matter how upset I get at a game, I can see that box and go “Well, at least it isn’t that bad”. This game enrages me so much, if I went into detail, I’d end up with a document as think as a phonebook (I actually started to rant, then saw I typed several pages worth of dialogue in a forum reply before going back and editing my reply down to this little paragraph).

There you are Mr. Joe. My Top 10 Most Disappointing. I look forward to your Top 10 Most Satisfying games, so I can properly reply with my own list for that topic as well. Until then: Good Evening, and Good Gaming.

YOU LOST YOUR MIND, MASS EFFECT 2 DEFINITLY ITS AMONG THE BESTS GAMES OF 2010, TOGHETER WITH BAD COMPANY 2 AND RED DEAD REDEMPTION, I DON’T KNOW WHAT KIND OF GAMER ARE YOU, MAYBE YOU LIKE STRATEGY OR OTHER GENRES, i don’t know about bc2 since my version is for pc, as well as my mass effect, both of them for pc and i’ve played my red dead on xbox 360, not the best game i’ve played but deserve kudos for quality and gameplay, on the pc i never can enter in a empty server on bc2, its always with 30-31 so i can be the last and enjoy a fullhouse match! and mass effect 2 WAS AWESOME, I’VE PLAYED IT FOR MOUNTHS! but yea my genre is first persons and single players rpgs, like the elder scrolls, among my favorite games of all time. what’s urs?

    Wow…those games are shit.

Also, interesting fact that you were introduced to the FF franchise via FFXIII. Bad move, partner.

Frankly, the FF franchise is as good as dead. Up to VI (and perhaps VII), it was okay. And I mean okay. But after that, it has spiraled into a massive big ball of fail and death that would never leave us apart…

But perhaps, if you dislike FF, you may give the Shin Megami Tensei franchise a try. (Problem is, you’ll need a PS2. There are no games of that franchise for the XBox360. So sad…). Spoony kind of liked it and you may ask him what game you could start with.

    Now…to wait for the 3DS…

here’s my top 3 games that pissed me off this year (didn’t really get any new games this year :( )

    3: metroid other M

team ninja may have single handedly destroyed the metroid franchise with this game, samus went from badass to wuss in 5 seconds of booting up this game, plus her voice is just annoying and the gameplay is sub par for a metroid game

    2: splinter cell conviction

i just know i’m gonna get flamed to a crisp for this one by it’s fanboys, but you know what f*** them, this isn’t splinter cell by any stretch of the imagination, too short a campaign, stealth that is possibly even more crappy then SC: DA and NO FUCKING SPYS VS. MERCS MODE?!?!?! WHAT THE F***?!?! on top of ALL THAT, they had the balls to put the most draconian style DRM ever invented by man

and my number one probably just killed any interest i had in one of my favorite game franchises ever

Command and conquer 4: tiberian twilight

this is my response to all it’s fanboys that will try and defend this PoS: F*** your cartoony graphics in a game that is supposed to be serious, F*** the lack any RTS elements, F*** the weak a** ending to the tiberian saga, f*** it’s online all the time DRM, f*** it’s short length and finally F*** it’s half a**ness, this game has offically destroyed C&C FOREVER!!!!!!!

thank you all and good day

I actually buy older games now (ones I’ve not played) and steered clear of what I could see was going to be shit this year, As well as checked reviews as not to waste money so the only game I can really say that disapointed me was… you guessed it! Final Fantasy 13!

And Joe, please, please! do not take the Final Fantasy series as all being like 13, I’d suggest playing FF1 to 7 for the better games. (9 was also pretty good I hear and.. for all the crap spoony gives 10 that was… OK at best, far better than 13.)

let me just point out the team who made 7 left around 10
I dont even count FFXIII as a FF game. The battle different ,No exploring , you cant train ahead of time to get stronger
all it was, was a similarity to that FF movie that was not FF at all. I think it was called spirits within?
      Just graphic.

For me FFXIII is the worst game for PS3.

I actually liked Final Fantasy 13, specifically because it was fun to play. And no, you don’t get anywhere by just spamming auto-attack, your best chances come from choosing your moves. So if you actually know what you’re doing, the combat is like 7 but more complex. Granted, it is a little subpar when compared to other Square titles, but I enjoyed the combat and the cinematics. The linearity was grating though.

TWO Final Fantasy games for worst games of the year. Eat me Square, focus on Dragon Quest and send Final Fantasy down the trendy bowl where it belongs so we can attempt untainted memories of your older and better Nintendo FF games. Kinda like how the Prequel Trilogy ruined the Original Trilogy of Star Wars.

But yeah i got final fantasy 13 for almost the same reason as Joe, only difference is I played the tactics and crystal cronicals games excluding the PS one and it was HORRIABLY boring, the only fun part was the boss battle AFTER like 4 hours of wasted time, 1.5 hours of it being the endless tutorial! I just gave up after whats his face with the brass knuckles got, mystery ability.

Edit: Fable 3 deserved to be 5 not 3 in my humble opinion, although i only upgraded melee and used wind ice magic the whole game. I actually……….. died!!!!

Quite frankly, I didn’t really purchase that many bad games, mostly due to listening to what critics say most of the time and just avoid titles. There were titles that did disappoint me or made me mad at just knowing them.

    1. Crackdown 2: I really like the first game, was one of the initial reasons for me to buy a 360 at the time, but CD2 was just nothing but a re-hash with hardly any improvements and overall degraded the game.

    2. Fallout: New Vegas: Alright, maybe not so much a disappointment but rather something I just don’t get. People at my high school would not shut up about this game, and I got a good deal for the game off of Steam and was just so damn bored with it, it really did not feel like I was motivated for the game’s goals and such.

    3. Metroid: Other M: I find it amazing that even as a non-Metroid fan (simply didn’t grow up with or played these games), this game actually somehow offended me with the gross characterization of Samus, basically turning a bad ass bounty hunter into a helpless flower that can’t do anything because of her ridiculous crush on Adam. Just simply Horrendous.

    4. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm: I’ll admit this game is actually starting to slowly grow on me, but the thing is its simply not as much as the game’s fault as it is the current server/BG setup my main has. Its one thing to have ridiculously hard heroics, though in reality they ain’t that hard so much as it depends purely on the other players abilities, its another for me to have to wait a whole hour before I can get even an attempt to do a heroic. I could rant about whats wrong with my server, but I’m simply just stating the problem here, needless to say, the players here are not making it fun. Overall, Cata initially just simply kept on seeming like one huge waste of time, those entire hours wasted could have been better used on SC2, a game where on PVP I may get my ass kicked, but at least I had fun trying. Like I said, Cata is starting to get better, but overall, still a bit of a burn-out for me

I disagree with a few games on Joe’s list, but overall its reasonable, especially towards Sonic Free Riders.

I think the logic behind FFXIII being higher than FFXIV is that FFXIII wasn’t what it was advertised as in everyone’s perception of an RPG. Where FFXIV was terrible and broken almost beyond repair, at least it had the fundamentals of an RPG. You’ve got quests, you’ve got an entire world to explore… what do you have in FFXIII? A rail ‘RPG’ that can barely be classed as such, with a tedious weapon upgrading system and a distinct lack of anything resembling exploration until the 10th Chapter.

Which is a shame, because not only did the story have potential (until the end, where all credibility exploded) but for how long FFXIII was in the works, I had high hopes for it… obviously that was a little naive of me. To think Square could produce anything of good quality for the franchise, any more. Pfft. I’ll learn from that lapse in judgement.

But like Spoony, I’m a tool of the franchise, doomed to buy each game in the vain hope that even a fraction of the old days makes its way back into the series… I guess we can just be happy we aren’t lured in by flashy visuals. I’ll admit FFXIII looked beautiful, but graphics don’t make a game– and neither does emulating every modern day FPS map in existence, in an RPG format. Seriously, I would love to know what they were thinking when they made it a corridor-runner…

Though Spoony may hate X, I agree with his statement on FF13 and i WANTED to like FF13 but it failed in many departments and for being the only game to make me feel lonely and sorta depressed at it’s boring linear gameplay.
This is coming from someone who’s favorite final fantasy is X for it’s linearity.
Hell I played FF13 before watching Neon Genesis Evangelion and FF13 made me more lonely than the most depressing Anime show ever made. Hope is essentially Shinji if he could battle while he angsts, but at least he gets better. Even if his getting better made him man up id still rather deal with an anime wimp for 13 hours than a videogame one for 60 hours

Ok my 5 worst of the year
    5. Ninety nine nights 2: Unlike the first game, nothing really original about this game like the first one, the first one each character had unique fighting style, some more suited to head on combat, some more suited to ranged attacks, this one took skins and used it for every characters, nothing special about any of them
    4. Deathsmiles: sounds like a cool title truth is its nothing more than a game like raiden trad or any other side scroller flying shooter, just with annoying music in the background
    3. Crackdown 2: Another game trying to cash in on its former, horrible game, aside from the fact your characters are pretty stale its hard to even get past the first mission you’re given because you get gunned down in about 30 secs, you die easier than the opponents and any time you die, all the enemies respawn.
    2. Resonance of fate: A cool sounding game again, and not too terrible, but so repetitive and difficult to get into the storyline, and some times you’re just left completely clueless about what you need to do, and going back and forth multiple times is just so annoying.
    1. Deadly premonition: Surprisingly some people liked this game, i dont know how, its not even a survival horror, you have a pistol with unlimited ammo, and melee weapons do more damage than a gun! Furthermore, just saying a town is a “small town” doesnt make it true, especially when I’ve seen towns smaller than the hotel in the town which had at least 200+ rooms and despite you being the only customer there, there are surprisingly a lot of “do not disturb” signs. Another nail in this coffin is that you play as an F.B.I. agent who rather than acting on reason, or putting together clues, gets his information from… COFFEE!!!!!!!!!!! no, the zombie hordes attacking you shoving thier hands down your throat didnt give it away it was the milk you poured in your coffee. And apparently people who destroy generators to prevent you from progressing obviously have a grudge against the generato, nothing else.

Anybody who watchs AJ’s videos for a while now will know that the newer Final Fantasy’s would be on the chopping board here, Oh and personally, I was horribly disappointed by 13, I really wanted to love the first next gen console Final Fantasy but no, All I got was ripped story begginings from Final Fantasy 7 and a boring walk in this straight line game.

Thats my own take on but is impossible (and stupid) to deny that you do just walk in a straight line and that takes everything away from what Final Fantasy used to be.

The latest Final Fantasy game I enjoyed was Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core, It was relatively similar but a little more superior when walking around than FF13, Also Crisis Core had a great story to tell which is unfair on 13 due to the fact that it had to introduce new characters and such but c’mon! this is Squire Soft! (Enix) I’m sure they can do better… but well maybe for another day. or the next gen of consoles. or something…

But if there was any overrated game out there, it should be Deathspank, I only played the trial and thought it sucked so much, that there is no need to buy it, The Dialog was annoying, the controls were terrible, and one of the enemies I ran into not only won’t attack, but I could not even hurt him! And the reason why the dialog was annoying, is because Deathspank keeps saying the words “Justice” or “Fight Evil” over and over again! It’s like something out of Adam West if he wasn’t so likable! “Bad Trial” means “Bad Game!”

It’s like they removed all that was good about the first game in order to fit the god-awful multiplayer onto the disk.

Special mention to League Of Legends for stealing SO MUCH of my time for a game that is so bad. (and yet i still play it, what’s wrong with me?)

They’re not all from 2010, but I’ve got a Top 5 Worst Recent Games list. I only own Nintendo systems for the time being, so needless to say, my list differs completely from Joe’s.

So, in order from most angering to least:

    1. Sonic Classic Collection (press start to pause? nah, let’s make them tap the touchscreen!)
    2. Boom Blox: Bash Party (let’s remove all of the charm that made the original so awesome!)
    3. Animal Crossing: City Folk (if we add a city, they won’t notice that it’s not even as good as the first!)
    4. Scribblenauts (tons of boring levels? firemen don’t put out freaking fires? check and check!)
    5. PokƩmon Battle Revolution (make the new features as badly executed as possible.)

It was really hard to make those summaries. Took a lot of restraint to limit myself to just a few complaints each.

To do those games justice, I would have to join TGWTG and give every one of them their own video rant!!

I worked for Microsoft as a promoter for Kinect. (Best job I’ve ever had up until now!!!)
    I really LOVE Dance Central!!!

Originally I was promoting only a few games:
Adventures, Kinectimals, Joy Ride, Sports, Your Shape and Dance Central

Never the less I was also permitted to try some other Kinect games – and by god – STAY AWAY FROM “DANCE PARADISE”!!!!

My rating for the other games I’ve tried (I have to ad that ALL games make MUCH more fun when playing with others!!!!):

    Adventures – 6/10
Kinectimals – RECOMMANDED ONLY FOR YOUNGER KIDS!!! N/A (personally – I HATE IT)
    Joy Ride – 5/10
    Sports – 7/10
    Your Shape – 6/10
Dance Central 9/10 (best game I’ve EVER played!)

So Joe – my most hated game of 2010 would be Dance Paradise. I wanted to try “Fighters Uncaged” because I’m a martial artist myself – never the less I was not giving the chance to try it (though I heard it is terrible a lot) – I’m sure it sux too – like you said it yourself.

As a martial artist and a gamer I have made one rule for myself… NEVER EVER play a motion fighting game. Reason for this? They NEVER keep up, and they can never do perfect 1-1 tracking of the actual moves, because each person’s style is slightly different. I prefer sticking to the real thing and not wasting my time or money on something that I’ll have to readjust my personal way of fighting to play. A 30FPS camera can’t hope to pick up the punch, or kick of a well trained martial artist. Hell, I’ve had regular HD video cameras catch only a blur. It is fine for a person who hasn’t had proper training, but for me, I’ll pass.

If you honestly think that demeaning everyone else’s opinions makes you feel better and makes the game look better, trust me, it doesn’t. It just makes you look like a complete no-life troll living in your parents’ basement. All I have to say is: have fun jerking off to Lightning for the rest of your lives. Unfortunately 2010 was pretty light on the game playing for me. But I can say one bad game you should not play is TRON: Evolution. I wrote a review which is below.

I was so damn happy Disney sent me a free review copy of the game…why do all the free games I get end up being bad ones? :( However I think the reason this game frustrates me so much is that it is a total missed opportunity to make a tron game I could geekgasm over. I actually like Final Fantasy XIII. Other than that, I agree with everything on the list.

My biggest disappointment of 2010… Probably Force Unleashed 2 or Fallout: New Vegas.

Force Unleashed 2 is a straight disappointment. New Vegas is disappointing because it’s an incredibly excellent game, and yet even -still- it’s so broken that every day I’ve stopped playing it, I’ve stopped because of the fourth or fifth crash of the day. A game should not crash on CONSOLES.

As for straight-up worst played game of 2010, I don’t think I played one.

Here’s a list of my Top 5 least favorite games of 2010. They include some favorites of other people, and most/all are DLC.

    5. Raskulls (360). I tried this game at PAX. It was boring and bland.
    4. Beat Sketcher (PS3). You draw with the PS3 Move! And that’s it. I’m so glad we in the US got Sports Champions packed with the Move.
    3. Deadliest Warrior (PS3/360). The life bar is useless, and I could never get used to the controls.
    2. Super Meat Boy (360). The difficulty isn’t the problem; the problem is that it could be easier if you unlocked a specific character for that level. Plus, the character design grates me. And you go back to the start of the level if you die. This game isn’t just hard; it’s torture. This game made me so mad, I almost smacked my Xbox 360.
    1. Kung-Fu Live (PS3). I have difficulty getting this game to function the way it’s supposed to.

Please Angry joe, play deadly premonition, that game is the greatest game ever, the graphics look like hell but the story is so wicked that it is epic, it’s a game designed for the hardcore gamers, and a must play. As a bonus, It’s only $25
    Please.

I haven’t played bad games this year, just FF13 that was SO boring, and fable 3.

I don’t really have a list, but Star Wars the Force Unleased II was a bigger disappointment than I thought possible. Seriously, $50 for a five(?) level game I beat in less than 3 hours!? Yes, it’s shorter than Dog Days. I swear to God. Also, playing as a freaking Gary-stu was severely disappointing. There was absolutely no challenge to this game. The first game was actually fun to me, but not anymore. And they just stuck Yoda in it for the fanboys to cream their pants. I still have it in my room. I have no clue why I haven’t sold it yet…

I then beat it the night I got it, and traded it in the next day for only 25 dollars.

Eighty dollars for under four hours of “this is alright” entertainment. FUCK YOU, LUCASARTS.

Like I said on the Review, Sonic Riders was fun, Sonic Riders Zero gravity was worse because the controls were worse, just not by that much, and Free Riders (which I havent played and wont) seems uncontrollable. Its Proof Innovation doesnt always make things better. Naughty Bear, where have I heard that? *goes to Wiki* oh they made Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time and Jersey Devil, two fun games from my Childhood, cool….wait what?!?!?!? I really dont come across bad games that often, there are a few games that I do hate. Sonic 06′, Sonic and the Black Knight (I really hate the Sonic fans, they say every game thats not like the original sucks, like Sonic and the Secret Rings which controlled Fine you morons, then they claim the sequel is better even though the controls keep screwing me over? screw you guys!) and Yugioh: Destiny Board Traveller, seriously, that game was so biased when playing it. The enemies would always get the luckiest roles, The Characters are uneven, theres no Difficulty setting, it just sucks and screw anyone who says otherwise. Surprisingly enough, theres more games that people say suck, which are actually quite fun. Shadow The Hedgehog, Final Fantasy 8, 10, 10-2 and even 13 (which I barely started actually), Kingdom Hearts, Sonic Riders, almost every Sonic game I’ve played actually, that I could make a list of probably.

So many FFXIII apologists and defenders. Final Fantasy is a declining product. They simply just keep getting worse and lose the superior flavor and magic that it once held. This franchise needs to take a long break, it is so saturated with poor ideas and quality.

I am only disappointed it wasn’t number 1.

Plus I think Square is just a sinking ship all around and have put out a few loads of crappy games over the past few years.

Civilization 5- Everything is broken and the way archers and ranged units functions is too op for any other unit to counter. There’s no way to stop your nation from coming out of debt, once it starts spiraling out of control.
There have been players attempting to mod the game to make it playable. But it’s just inexcusable and pathetic if the gaming community has to mod the game to make it fun. Payable DLC is a retarded idea for the civilization series, if you excuse me saying. I’ve never had to pay $5 for an extra civilization or map before in Civ 3 and 4, both of which are better games anyway. They completely removed after action reviews of your civilization which pissed me the hell off. No victory movies is also a step back from what the game once was. It now takes hundreds of years to make one military unit, which can’t occupy the same space as another military unit. The whole game needs a makeover but rather than focusing on repairing the game, Sid Meier has whored himself out by choosing to make crappy dlc rather than focusing on the needs of the people who like civilization. Rather than paying for a babylonion civilization now, I’ll just mod in my own. Unless I’m a F*****g idiot im not gonna pay for dlc for Civilization.

Starcraft 2… ‘s story- Worst story i’ve ever seen in a game. I rolled my eyes and laughed by the end. Nothing got resolved. Everyone in the story is an idiot, drunk, or an asshole. Splintering storylines make players wonder what is cannon. I suspect sequel will have just as bad story so it’s not worth an expansion. Very disappointing since they’ve spent like 5 years making the game. It feels like they had the missions all completed and realized they had no script so they decided to add a story in at the last minute. Love the gameplay though, although a few multiplayer balance issues but unlike Civ V which would just make me pay for unnecessary dlc, Blizzard is at least trying to balance gameplay between the races, releasing a patch every couple of weeks or so.

Anyway, i could go on, but these games just don’t attract my attention like their predecessors did. They are disappointing in one regard or another and that’s why I chose them. That’s the bottom line.

A pretty nice list you’ve made there Joe!

I never played the latest Final Fantasy installments, but I can easily tell they aren’t too great. Although Square Enix does a nice job with the cutscenes and intro’s and such, it doesn’t really help when the gameplay sucks.

I really thought Fable III would be pretty good. Although I don’t own an Xbox 360, I’ve seen a preview at a games convention in Amsterdam (The Netherlands), and it looked pretty cool. Little did I know of the flaws of Fable II which apparently weren’t fixed in the latest of the Fable series.

Sonic Free Riders… Sigh, I already knew that this was going to suck badly. I mean, the Kinect is a nice gadget for your Xbox 360, which also does a great job with motion detecting and giving a realistic feel, but I don’t imagine ANY race game played on Kinect. And especially Sonic Riders, which isn’t that bad a game, but only the first part was fun to play, and I managed to squeeze a little fun out of the second part as well. But this… well… just looks plain awful to watch and do. Synchro racing or whatever? What the hell?

Personally, I don’t have a list. I’m not really a type of gamer that tends to play every game that comes out, I neither have the time nor money to do that. But I think Angry Joe’s list covers pretty much everything.

It was exactly the same for me when I tried out Final Fantasy XIII, wondering what all the commotion about FF was about, so I borrowed it from my brother to play it and was rather disappointed by not just the voice acting, but the way the game was so linear and, not only am I not particularly a fan of turn based combat, but it was very dull for me, lacking much in the way of things to do during combat other than select something and watch the pretty animation and so on. Didn’t get very far as it bored me pretty quickly (and yes I know, you need to keep playing to get to the good bits but it’s not worth my time really). Wasn’t a great game to introduce me to the series IMO.
Other than that, Fable III was the only other game in this list that I played, and so far, it seems okay, but I haven’t gotten very far… so we’ll see :P

Good vid, o’ great leader Joe :)

I was a little disappointed to see Star Trek Online on there. I admit, it’s not a perfect game.. Yeah it is mostly just shoot the enemy style gameplay, but I found the atmosphere and story of the game to be very fun and entertaining. Ship combat was always awesome to experience. Just as a Trek fan in general, I found it satisfying despite it’s limitations.

I knew that Sonic Riders would be Number 1 though, after the fact that it’s the first game you’ve ever given a 1/10 for.

Games that I loved that I played in 2010 or 2011:

    *Zelda: Spirit Tracks (NDS)
    *Blazing Angels (Wii)

Well, I probably played a total of 7 games this year (for the first time, anyway) and only 1 of them came out this year.
    Metal Gear Solid 1-3
    No More Heroes 2
    Metroid: Other M
    Shadow of the Colossus
    Okami
Yeah, I can’t afford to spend all of my (non-existent) money on video games. I would if I could, but I can’t.

Honestly the most disappointing was Snake Eater, but only because I don’t own it. It is one of the best games I’ve ever played. Other M gets a lot of undeserved flak in my opinion. It’s a combination of unpleasable fans and people who don’t like plot and character development. Of course, that’s not to say it was perfect; Samus’ voice acting was mediocre at best, some of the plot points were unnecessarily arbitrary and the game was extremely short, but overall it was a fun experience.

I’m definitely looking forward to 2011 for games, even if I can’t even buy any of them. The 3DS, with a new Paper Mario, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear Solid, Kid Icarus sequel, Skyward Sword, Arkham 2, Portal 2…

For that one guy saying JRPGs suck, must I remind you that some of the best games are JRPGS. Dragonquest is surprisingly good, the original Final Fantasy introduced the concept of games having a PLOT (fairly revolutionary, if you ask me) FF6 (I think? that’s the one with Kefka, right?) is one of the best games ever, and Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean (very similar to the 3D FF games) is hands-down my favorite independent game ever made (including Okami, TF2, and the entire Zelda, Metal Gear Solid and Mario series’). It has a brilliant plot, believable characters, engaging gameplay, wonderful art, a soundtrack that is equal parts beautiful and kickass, and a 60+ hour story. Some of the voice acting was less than superb, but that’s really its only flaw, and a small one at that.

Oh, and to that guy talking about Kane and Lynch and how the story ends abruptly, I quote Bloo from an episode of Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends:
“If something is THIS awesome, it doesn’t need an en–

The problem I have with the FF13 complaint, and this is something that is rampant now, is how all of a sudden the Final Fantasy series is treated one franchise, when it’s really just branding.

FF13 is a terrible first game for someone new to the franchise. Motomu Toriyama, the director of FF13 directs and designs his games much differently than say matsuno, Nomura or Sakaguchi, and FF13 is a continuation of many of the design choices that were in FF8 or FF10. if you didn’t grow up with those games, you are not going to like FF13. FF9 (Sakaguchi) or FF12 (Matsuno) or even KH(Nomura), which has a much different focus
    could be up your alley.

It annoys me when people bash the franchise, not the game. SE could just pick one type of game to make, and reinvent the wheel every few years like others(Fable) but then they would be bashed for being lazy. SE tries different things, different directors and they get bashed for not being appealing to every gamer and the franchise is in “trouble”

the 2 previous Sonic Riders games are a couple of my favorite racing games of all time. I’m disappointed that Free Riders ended up so bad, but I’m sad to say I’m not surprised.

Free Riders had every sign of being a bad Sonic game, just like ’06 before it. No nintendo release, launch title for a new system, using a peripheral as a gimmick…Looking back, I can see the poor thing had NO chance. Too bad it was released when it was, because Sonic was all set for a big revival with 3 GREAT games (Sonic 4, and the 2 versions of Colors) and this mutated 4th brother shambles in the room and pukes on the floor, tainting opinions of the whole lot.

I agree with 90% of this list EXCEPT the FFXIII placement as it gets alot of undeserved heat. The story whilst not the greatest is still ALOT deeper than recent games. FFXII was mostly background story, X-2 lets not get into that,. You are saying it’s worse than Fable III, Iron man 2 and FFXIV that’s really a stretch and theres a dude who said you can beat FFXIII by bashing the A button, really?. I should try that and proberly fail as some of the battles get really challenging later in the game. It is a game you have to patience for, im not a huge fan of it and agree it could be better but it does not deserve this placement in Joe’s list.

Was it placed there because you could not find a number 2 slot because Kayne and Lynch being better is just laughable. Hell I would rather play FFX-2 than that shit.

FF13: Honestly thought it’d be lower since I thought the story was somewhat pleasing. The only problem was the gameplay was tedious as hell. I wouldn’t mind linear games so much if the pacing would pick up better, or if the leveling system was done better. I mean my god, I do enough grinding on WoW as it is, the only time I would grind in an JRPG is if I’m slightly underleveled since otherwise I could probably beat a boss or two, not to waste my time leveling a weapon or stat tree!

FF14: My computer was crappy to the point where the game lagged for me. Even then the controls were busted. It’s a shame too since it looked like the story would have been pretty awesome. Too bad we’ll never see it conclude given how bad it’s done.

Kane and Lynch: Never played, but if your game’s ending is so abrupt like that, then the writer should retire, plain and simple.

Fable III: Sat through the list once, watched people play it, my god what have they done to Fable?

Sonic Free Riders: I’m no Sonic fan, I do enjoy a few games and would like to play games like Sonic 4 and Sonic Colors (I hear they’re good), but geez, Sega needs to stop making broken games and putting Sonic on them since all it’ll do is make the character look bad. Sonic wouldn’t be in this state if Sega took the time to actually make a good game instead of trying to market him to death. Hopefully whatever fan-feedback to Sega from Sonic 4 will help in building the second episode. I wouldn’t want Sonic to die out because of Sega’s inability to make games fun and enjoyable, and actually functional.

    Overall, a very nice list.

Joe, as a fan of your show and someone who watches old episodes just for the fuck of it, I have to ask whats been up lately with the sound quality?

Both this episode and the 32 reasons why Fable 3 is a shitty game video had sound quality, to put it nicely, that was less then stellar. Parts of this one sounded like you were eating the microphone then suddenly you were echoing like you backed into a hallway. In the Fable 3 video (as well as quite a few parts of this video) your sound level was up way WAY too loud which only made it worse when you decided you needed to yell about something.

Usually your production values are much better then this and It just feels like they’ve slipped a little in the month or so this sites been up.

Any way, my top 5 worst games of last year were:

    5) Fist of the North Star: Theres always been something about FotNS thats drawn me in.. I think its got something to do with those REALLY old ads for the FotNS games that used to be all over comic books when I was a kid.. Well I got suckered into Nostalgia this time and lost big. This game was complete crap.

    4) Vanquish: I’m sorry sliding around and getting cheaply insta-killed by bosses that take way to long to kill even when you know what to do just isn’t fun.. I also greatly enjoyed being cheap right back and became virtually invincible once I found the sweet spot of various broken environment pieces.. I won’t miss this title if it never gets a sequel.

    3) Darkvoid: Man, I remember the hype they tried to build for this game.. Then the reviews came.. Then people actually played it.. I don’t think I’ve ever played a game based around flight that had worse controls..

    2) Final Fantasy XIII: I’m one of those rabid Final Fantasy fan boys you always hear about. I’ve played everything Final Fantasy I’ve been able to ever get my hands on and have tried to experience every other form of media the series has ever had to offer. Final Fantasy XIII had me, for lack of a better term, excited in about Final Fantasy again. This game (and Castlevania Lords of Shadow) was the reason I bought this this generations consoles.

    Then I played the game…

And I think that’s where I’m going to stop this entry, because its just going to be the same things you’ve all heard from everyone else who despises this game. This game should have been #1 on my list but recently somethings edged it out by a few hundred miles.

    1) World of Warcraft: Cataclysm: Ok I’m cheating here with an expansion to a 6+ year old game but after playing the game for all of those 6+ plus years and everything I’ve experienced in the game from launch day I think I can safely say that this expansion was literally cataclysmic to the entire structure of the game and the mentality of its player base. This expansion made this game fucking toxic.

I’m the kind of person who somehow manages to discern which games are good to get and avoid the truly bad titles. I don’t have a Top Ten Most Disappointing list because I like the majority of my games; determining my “most disappointing” would be nitpicking among my liked games.

…with the sole exception of FORCE UNLEASHED 2!!!

Is it just me or does the Sonic Riders series reflect the Sonic franchise itself?

I mean the first game, while it may not have bought anything new to the genre, was a solid and fun little racer. For the second game Sega naturally decided to throw everything that made the first game fun out the window and turned it into an overcomplicated mess. The third game, oh God why?

Most disappointing game of the year? Other M. It’s not a bad game but filled with so many stupid moments.

Joe, I like that you don’t make top 10 lists for a year until it’s over. That’s how it should be done.

:) You must feel silly yelling like that in the intro.

    1:33 Stretched textures.

Joe looks so funny in his Iron Man helmet.

#7 What do you expect? Of course a dev’s not going to say, “yeah our game sucks”.

#6 You’ve got balls Joe. A later release date for Deus Ex doesn’t necessarily mean less funds. On the contrary, it means more payment for milestones. Either Deus Ex is behind its’ production schedule or (more likely as a reaction to FF) higher-ups at SE decided to give it more timein Beta before going Gold.

11:30 Texture fighting on the tail of the plane.

13:57 Joe, it’s in line w/Peter’s vision. He doesn’t know what an RPG is. He wants every game to be a sim that doesn’t stress the player with any challenges. Remember, his great innovation for Fable 2 was a dog and he was convinced no one had ever had a pet or character players bonded with in a game before. He’s delusional.

#2 You’ve got balls and good taste Joe. Folks like JRPGs b/c they like anime/manga conventions. That’s it. Good RPGs are western RPGs like Fallout New Vegas, Mass Effect 2, etc. Sadly Joe, the franchise is in no trouble. Fanboys will buy any FF game no matter how much it sucks.

#1 Aren’t we glad M$ and Sony brought wii shovelware to their consoles.

Go ahead and say that western RPGs are more to your taste and that you don’t like JRPGs, but saying that an entire genre of games is crap just makes you look dumb.

I almost totally agreed with this list, until you said Final Fantasy 13………and before you ask NO im not a fan boy of Final Fantasy……i only played 4, 10, and 7 and now 13 too…… 13 is not that bad, i admit its slow going at first but it really picks up…….The graphics are amazing, and the story really gets good…..in your list you said you never played a final fantasy game before, and you just gave up, then its not your type of game. i don’t see why its so high on your list. Its like me saying .”I never played a Mario game, so i played mario galaxy 2, and i got bored, so its a bad game. and now its my number 3 on my Top 10 Worst Games ever” see how that’s not fair. maybe if you went into more details why you think its bad, i will understand. .. whats more shocking is that its so high on your list, so you would rather play Final fantasy 14 then 13… I mean come on Joe, ever if your not a fan, its not as bad as 14.

Movie licensed games in general tend to be poorly made and shoved out the door to make a quick buck, there are very very VERY few exceptions to that.

I gave up on Final Fantasy at 10. And guess what.. just like Final Fantasy 10-2, they’re making a Final Fantasy 13-2! Goodie gumdrops! It seems like they always want to make sequels to the worst games in the franchise.

Because I’m broke, I didn’t get to play a lot of new games. But the worst one I DID play was Fallout: New Vegas. Yeah. It’s not that it’s a bad game altogether (It’s really fun!), it’s that it is SOOOOOOO glitchy and messed up! I’ve found myself wandering the wasteland for a VERY long time, only to get stuck on a rock and have to load from the last save. Not only that, but the AI does some pretty stupid stuff. Like how Old lady Gibson and her dogs just suddenly teleport to the Helios One base and start trying to kill me for no reason. Not just me either. It happened to my brother. AND how I was using some dynamite on an enemy, and it FLEW up into the air and wouldn’t come back down. Not to mention spots where the frame rate drops for no reason, AND if I play for too long, the load time for when I go through a door starts to reach 1 minute. Might not seem so bad, but go run numerous missions in Freeside and see if you are thinking the same thing. So Joe, AVOID THIS GAME if you are not a Fallout fan.

What I do want to say is how awesome Joe’s reaction is in the Risen review about the map system.

in my opinion i agree with the people who said Final Fantasy 13 gets better over half the way through, i am only on the second disc and it is getting better and more interesting although there is too many cut-scenes and the battles are too short compared to its predecessors (which weren’t great either) but they changed the battle style from ff12 style which i liked to this one which is terrible, i think that these final fantasy games aren’t good because most of the effort is in the kingdom hearts and dragonquest sagas which are better in every way, and if you don’t believe me play final fantasy 4(remake) and then play dragonquest 9, there are huge simularities

And though I don’t have any current-gen gaming console, you made your point on the other games, they do sound horrible indeed. And about Sonic Free Riders…. I get sick easily, even from traveling by CAR, so I imagine the game would literally kill me…..

There was only one game that I was really looking forward to throughout all of 2010. It was a game that I was looking forward to since I played Crackdown, that game is APB. I was so excited for it’s release that I signed up for the beta playing all four or so hours that it gave you happily immediately signing up for a month of game time.

As time went on however the small easily fixable flaws in the game play started to show and time after time we were promised that it was going to be fixed. But when they finally announce that the game changing patch is coming out within the next day I was all like ‘Yeah this is gonna be awesome! :D ’ I log on to find it’s being shut down for good. :\ To me this was my biggest disappointment of 2010…

How people defend FF13 astounds me.

“The story is good.” No, its not, it makes no sense. Even the characters say it makes no sense. The point (using the term loosely) of the story of FF13 is no one knows what the hell is going on. The world you’re allegedly meant to protect or destroy (cause no one knows) is hollow. You never really interact with it in any significant fashion so it becomes impossible to care.
“The characters are good.” Hahahaha…. Lightning is a Squall ripoff (and a less likable version of him), Vanille is a squeak toy, Hope is a whining sociopath. Snow, Fang, and The black guy who’s name I can’t remember how to spell are “okay”. Fang, as hot as she is, is two dimensional “tough girl” at best. Snow is a pedo (he is).Black Guy is the only character there with any real depth.

“The combat is fast and exciting” No, the combat LOOKS fast. It’s a visual trick. It distracts you from the fact you can just press “auto attack” over and over again and win basically every battle. In actuality, the combat is painfully slow because of the massive health of nearly everything you run into, unless you take the effort to paradigm shift which is broken (since instantly refills your APB bar if you time it properly) and lets you get two rounds in back to back. Excluding maybe the very end game dungeon, you NEVER need to change roles to win/

“It gets better after 20 hours!” Bullshit! BULL F***ING SHIT! After 20 hours it dumps you into 1 “open” zone which has no more interesting side quests than go here and kill this then come back. That’s what MMOs make you do! Then after you get bored doing that, it sets you back on the railroad. I can diagram FF13 for you |————————————–O—-|

“It’s pretty.” Okay, I’ll give ya that.

“Other stupid praise.” There’s no exploration, the character stat growth is even more needlessly obtuse and time consuming than FF10′s sphere grid, it’s short for a JRPG, the weapon crafting is even more annoying and time consuming than the stat growth.

I’m normally not one to do this, but if you think this game is “good” you are either a mindless fanboy or have no grasp of a quality game.

I was also very disappointed by FF XIII, Syveria exactly pointed the things out, i was gonna to mention. The Shame is, i really like JRPG’s. I was a huge Square Fan, Back in the 16bit era, and after missing FF 9-12 (my sister had a ps1, but i always had Nintendo-Consoles) i was really looking forward for a new FF. But after what i’ve seen and heard of FF X (X-2) and my personal experiences with FF XIII, i’d say: If you want a good 3D JRPG, you have to look somewhere else.

If you have an XB360 and want a good jrpg, than go fetch Lost Odyssey. It’s not perfect, i know, i. e. the combat system is really waaay too old-school, but in terms of story, characters, world… FFXIII doesn’t hold a candle against LO… And this Game is now 3 Years old.

Shortly after i ran through every Game in the Series (except for 2) within 2 months. And then came Other M. What a smack in the face for a fan, and i considered myself to be one after my Metroid-Marathon.

And it isn’t even really a bad game. The controls are good, the graphics are (for wii-standards) great, and the story is, well not good or original, but not bad either. In Fact, i think Other M would have been a really good game, if it wasn’t a Metroid. Poor Samus…

The absolute worst game of the year for me was Final Fantasy XIII. I’ve played and loved every Final Fantasy game, even ones that I didn’t think I would, including VIII. (Even though, Zell > Squall)
There was nothing for me to like in that game. Bad characters, stories, retarded combat system.. ugh.

    My list, though:
    5. Iron Man 2
    4. Alpha Protocol
    3. N3 II
    2. Kane and Lynch 2
    1. Final Fantasy XIII

I’m very easy to please when it comes to games. HOWEVER, that’s partially because I avoided the games that my friends actually said “Dude, don’t play that game.” (As it stands, Joe is one of the only reviewers whose opinion I trust.)

I played FFXIII all of the way through. God help me but its story was almost as senseless as FFVIII.

    Evil Transformer God: “Kill Orphan!”
Most PCs: “No! We are free individuals who can make up our own minds!”
Fang (one of the PCs): “Agreed. In fact, I’m such an individual I think most of my party members are idiots.”
Most PCs: “Don’t leave us! We must be individuals as a unified group!”
    Fang: “Okay.”
Evil Transformer God: “Last chance! Kill Orphan!”
    PCs: “Never!”
    Orphan: “Hi. I’m Orphan.”
    PCs: “KILL IT!”
    Cue bad guys winning.
Cue random deus ex machina saving the day IN THE MIDDLE OF A VIDEO SCENE THAT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR ACTIONS EARLIER IN THE GAME!

    *weep*

At this point I’m just going to hold out and pray for FFXV to have some redeeming quality. I love the technology influence on the series, but honestly I think the game needs to go back to its fantasy roots for a bit and actually try to build an epic, complex, yet coherent story that allows for exploration in a massive world. In the meantime, at least I can replay 1, 4, 4-2, 5, 6, 7, 9, 12, and tactics (REAL tactics, not that advanced crap).

Oh, but if you don’t like Final Fantasy XIII, then you may wanna skip out on the recently announced Final Fantasy XIII-2.
However, there is a sequel to a good Final Fantasy spin-off, called Dissidia: Final Fantasy, being made. Its an RPG-Fighter Hybrid called Dissidia 012: Final Fantasy (012 being pronounced Duodecim). The first was considered by many to be a good game.

As for the list, I have, fortunately, not played a single game I considered bad this year (even if Final Fantasy XIII and Fable III were on you’re List, Joe). Then again, I haven’t had the opportunity to play many games this year, not even through rentals.

I hated both 12 and 13 so don’t know where that puts me. Also, if you play FF games for the story.. why would you like 13? The story is dull as all hell and at the same time is so convoluted it makes no sense. The series started going downhill after 7 but it didn’t start rubbing its face in the jagged rocks below until 12 (Yes, even X-2 was better.)

Not to sound mean but this sounds like someone who loves everything Square-Enix puts their stamp on.

I’d like to say I have some hope for 13-2, but I can’t. I smell a Crisis Core rip off with less iconic (read, unlikable) characters.

I thought both 12 and 13 were mediocre. 12 because it was mediocre all around (story, characters, gameplay, the works), 13 because it had good combat but a terrible story and a mixed bag of terrible-to-passable characters.

Then again, I’m not really a Final Fantasy fan, just a JRPG fan who has been trying all the FF games he can get his hands on for the past few years in the hopes of understanding why the series is so popular. I’ve failed at that so far, but I still haven’t gotten to the games of the series that get the most praise, 6 and 7, so there’s still those I suppose.

I’ve been watching your show for a while, Joe, though this is my first time commenting. Thanks for all the laughs.

I have to disagree with a lot of what you said about STO. It sounds like you were expecting it to be a single player RPG, and didn’t really understand that it was an MMO (though you called it that frequently). A lot of the criticisms you gave it sounded like the things you do in MMOs. It makes me question if you really know much about MMOs if you criticize one for genre-defining aspects.

As someone who’s been playing MMOs for upwards to eight years, I feel like you don’t really ‘understand’ the genre. It has its quirks, and lots of those quirks are things that individuals new to the world of MMOs don’t like, or think are somehow bad. How many MMOs have you played Joe? Just curious… I bet I am way off, but I don’t think you’ve played too many.

The rest of your list was good though. FFXIV was an abysmal creation that should be banished to the darkest corner of hell. I was really looking forward to the game until I got into beta heh.

I wouldn’t be that harsh with Risen although the battle system is weird and the battles stupidly difficult I enjoyed it in the end…Yet I did play the PC version with was much better than the xbox port.I heard many awful things about it that did not exist in the PC version. Also i do not know how bad things were with the divinity 2 xbox port but the Divinity 2: DKS for the PC is one of the best RPGs i have played recently…And I have played my share of them….

good list i knew fable 3 would be there but seriously final fantasy 13 really isnt that bad its way better then 12 and i honestly liked it over 10 and 10 2 as well. the truth is aside form 9 and maybe 7 (mostly to avoid a flame mob) there will probably never be a 3d final fantasy even remotely as close to how good the 16 bit era was to the series ff6 may be my all time favorite game ever. 13 was linear and i hated how uneventful the ultimate weapons were but it is by no means a horrible game it had good graphics and a decent story as well as less characters that made me want to hang myself after seeing them, hope being the only really annoying one vs 8 having squall rinoa selphie and zell 10 having wakka tidus and yuna , it is lacking but it still gives alot . but enough gimmicks square world ends with you was great make more unique games and make a kingdom hearts with a number again im getting tired of these detours although birth by sleep is one of the best rpgs to come out all year.

But i will never understand you bad rating of one of the best games of 2010. Alpha Protocol. This game is ,despite the slow loading textures, a total gem. And i played it 3 times now and still havent seen all the dialogue and different outcomes.

Outstanding list Joe; there were so many bad games last year, I basically stopped after Fable III. I was so hyped up for it only to be left wanting to cry for blowing so much money on that cannon fodder. I even posted a pic of myself on facebook holding the game after waiting a couple hours out in the cold to get it. If there is a Fable IV; I’m sorry to admit, I will give it “one” final chance. Because Fable II was pretty good. Especially compared to III.

I have a request; I know it came out back in 2008, but could you review, “Spider-Man: Web of Shadows”? But “ONLY” for the 360 or PS3; trust me any other version will make you want to spew venom himself.

But I truly loved that game and after the whole Fable II crash, Web of Shadows, remains to this day, my favorite game ever. I know you mainly do bad games, but you have reviewed a few great ones, that I have actually tried and bought thanks to you. I would love to see what your opinion is on this one. ^_^

Then again, I liked Alpha Protocol AND Kane & Lynch 2, so I guess I just have a shit taste for video games.

Ok ok, based solely on definition I really feel I must defend FFXIII. This is a top 10 list of the “worst” games of the year, not “disappointing”. If you wanted to say XIII was a disappointing title I can 100% understand your sentiment, considering very little if anything about the game resembles prior games in the series. Relatively weak story, give or take characters, linearity, I get all that. But to list it higher on the list than XIV, a game that is listed as unplayable is unjust. XIII, as a game, whether you agree with the design choices or not, at least functioned! And while the battle system is a little restricted at first, it really is one of the more engaging and enjoyable battle systems as far as RPGs go, not to mention the graphics are tops and the music isn’t half bad either. I can understand somebody wanting to list it as maybe number 8-10, but it simply isn’t a “bad” game. The gaming community is pretty thoroughly divided on their opinion of the game. Personally, while it wasn’t what I was expecting it to be given the inordinate amount of wait time for it, I still had an enjoyable experience despite my optimistic expectations. I simply think #2 worst game of the year is a major exaggeration and is simply unfair.

I haven’t played so many new games recently, so I haven’t played any precisely TERRIBLE games. However, the most disappointing new game I’ve played recently is Red Dead Redemption (I own the game…). It was really fun to play at first… but the more I played it, the more it made me get pissed off at it. The horse is dumb and requires you to press down X just in order to make it run – which is just retarded. It’s a horse – not a damn car. I also hate stuff like when you are out hunting animals and needs to be ready in case wolves or cougars attacks you, and you manage to shoot down one animal and goes to it to skin it, the inventory swaps to your freakin’ knife as the weapon of use. This has killed me SO many times. If I want my knife, I will frakin’ pick it. But when I skin a animal, I only want the knife to pop up for the moment – I thought that was common sense. I also hate stuff in the game like that it’s just getting tedious and dragged out… you get bored by the deserts after a while. Not to mention; why the heck can’t you go to all the places from the very start? Thanks for restricting me, in a so-called “sandbox-game” meant to make me feel free. Oh, and the fact that you will need to get further in the story to get new outfits and weapons and such… like that makes any sense. And in the weapon store; there are no fucking revolvers to buy! In a WESTERN game, I want there to be lots and lots of types of revolvers to buy. But no, you only have that shitty revolver in the beginning. But after playing for 5 billion hours, you DO get one new revolver while in Mexico, by an old fart… bullshit. There’s so many things that made me so mad in Red Dead Redemption… like the “venomous” water as well… if you walk in it too deep – instant kill… blow me. In that case, you as well disappointed me, Angry Joe… you were the reason I bought the game, because you recommended it so much. All that happened after a while, was that I realised how overrated the game really is.

Red dead redemption was actually a really good game I’ve played it thoroughly and while I agree that the instant kill water is annoying it so rarely comes up it’s not really an issue. Basically the plot is good and an interesting take on the way government agencies get things done characters are interesting and engaging, including that “old fart”. The only complaint I have really is that after you finish a persons missions then they pretty much disappear which is unfortunate when you really like the characters. The wild animal attacks while annoying add an element of danger to traveling and remind you that this is the last remnant of the “old west”. Then we have your very stange complaints about not being able to fast travel everywhere and get every costume immeadiatly after putting in the game you know kind of like almost every grand theft auto ever or oblivion or crackdown or saints row the list goes on. I could go through on a point by point basis and I haven’t even touched on the music direction basically I feel this game very much accomplished its goal to basically be an old west film that you can play and enjoy.

Square-Enix is shooting themselves in the foot with every sequel, spin-off and remake they are releasing and they need to knock it off.

I enjoyed FF1-10(yes I liked the eighth installment to, suck it Spoony!). But my favorite FF game is FFVI. No other game can top that, IMO. But it all went down hill after X-2.

And my number one most disappointing games of 2010 was.
    1. Star wars the force unleashed 2 this game by far was just flat out bad they didnt do anything to make the game any better not to mention is was super short and way to easy and they didnt make any real improvements the game at all which was very disappointing.

And in the end when the free roaming does go away it get’s super fun. The challenge of killing the damn Admantoise before you know how comes to mind lol. It was fun, but I did want to kill Hope. the thing about ff13 is that it’s just not as good or captivating as its predecessors. I personally love ff1-9 (yes, even 8). Partially because I was a kid and partially because the narrative expectations of games in the 90′s weren’t as high as they are now. 10,12 and 13 weren’t BAD games, but they certainly don’t heighten my opinion of the series. Now, being that I’m a HUGE jrpg fan, I KNOW that the general public is probably getting pretty fed up with the series by now (you know, the people who only buy the final fantasy game because it’s a final fantasy game). That being said, I think ff13 and 14 may have been square’s last safety net in the eyes of gamers.

My point? FF13 VS better kick all kinds of ass or else square enix is in some deep shit.

As for the dissapointments, Crackdown 2 since it was the same damn game as the first and DKC Returns because no classic controller support (stupid waggle rolls).

PS: Thanks for putting the one Sonic game released this year that I didn’t like. The controls didn’t work when I tried the demo. I would assume it be less than the Kane and Lynch spot though. At least Sonic Colors and STH4:E1 were fun though.

Uh isn’t it obvious that all these top 10 lists are made from the perspective of the person doing them. That’s why Joe says it’s the top 10 games he’s reviewed or had hands on expierence with: because they’re the games he personally dislikes. Do we really need to say “In my opinion” when doing a 10 ten list. Shouldn’t it be naturally assumed it IS your opinion when you list your personal greviances towards the game? Do we really need to say “My Top 10″ for a list since that just seems very unncessary.

People may not agree with me, but here is my list anyways. I don’t have a Xbox360 or PS3, sorry. I own a Wii, original xbox, PS2, PSP and a Original Sega Genesis. What can I say, I play a lot of PC or PSP games because I can’t afford a new gaming system on a student budget.

    10. Final Fantasy XIV (PC) Beta tested it and walked off because of how poorly it was made.
    9. Golden Eye 007 (Wii) Ruined my memories of the original, gameplay sucked for me.
    8. Split Second (PSP) Worst controls on a racing game.
    7. Borderlands (PC) Just hate the graphics and concept.
    6. Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions (Wii) Horrible camera angle and watered down story.
    5. Valkyria Chronicles 2 (PSP) Hated the battle system.
    4. Shadow of Destiny (PSP) Good story but way too short.
    3. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (PSP and Wii) HATE the ending.
    2. Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack The Ripper (PC) No clue why but hated the concept and felt fake and lifeless.
    1. Black Mirror 2 (PC)

I love point and click adventures and I picked Black Mirror 2 because of the climax, the ending. You are having fun and then it smacks you with a cheap ending that makes you want to throw the game. Do they have 3 out yet? No….Not in english anyways and not sold in the United States. I want a point and click adventure like in the past that delivers. Just like the Sam & Max series did!

So Angry Joe, your choice of putting Final Fanatsy XIII on number 2 is a response to another game reviewer Zeitgeist, here on Blistered Thumbs? Because he put that game on his number 1 in his top 10 best games of 2010. Like you, he made it clear that he doesn’t let others put he down on his choice on gaming verdicts.

I’m just saying. I’m not a Final Fanatsy fan, I never once played a Final Fanatsy game in my life. For years, both sides have been debating each other (you and Spoony so far); gamers like you and Spoony have been trying to talk down with realization with the FF fanboys who sensitively defend the recent Final Fanatsy games regardless that they too notice what Square Enix is doing to the series so bad, and destroying the legacy that Final Fanatsy was built. According to Spoony, the first Final Fanatsy games were the greatest ever until recently the series has been having trouble to relate to their fans faithfully….and it isn’t pretty at all. Whatever the outcome, you and Zeitgeist will have more time to see any chance to collaborate to review a game together (I’m sure you will, just you two have different opinions).

    Good list Joe. Good list.

P.S.: That old dude really do pull up some moves. NICE!

I agree completely. Sure I didn’t like the linear gameplay either, but there is a valid reason for it being in the game. For those that haven’t played the game and are just agreeing with all the negative reviews because its cool let me explain and as for everyone who has played it and still hates the game please be quiet. At the beginning of the game it’s clearly obvious that there is war going on between two different worlds. The world known as Cocoon and the world known as Grand Pulse. The first two characters you meet are Lightning and Sazh. You learn later why these two have teamed up to fight Cacoon as well as everyone else in the game. Then we meet our other protagonists Snow and Hope. And before any tells me Hope sucks, yes I agree. He is by far one of the worst characters ever made. He is annoying, whinny, and a complete mama’s boy. Also we meet Vanille. who clearly has a crush on Hope, but of course he’s to fucking stupid to notice. So after a few battles, the player learns that a giant monster known as a “Falcie” has appeared to apparently destroy the city our hero’s are in. So they decide to do the only logical thing to do in this situation, destroy it and save the city. However, two of our hero’s have alternative motives and they are Lightning and Snow. They both lost someone very precious to them and want to get them back from the evil clutches of Cocoon and the “Falcie.” Once they get inside they discover what happens to someone who doesn’t complete what the game calls a “Focus.” They turn into undying slaves to the Falcie, but when the find the person they were looking for they turn into crystal and this is apparently a gods send since they are immortal, but can’t interact with anyone for all eternity. Soon after this the group fights the Falcie and destroy it, but with a price. The group has become branded and are now known a La’cie who are warriors of Grand Pulse. Which means they are the enemies of Cocoon and it’s people, which also means you can’t buy your stuff in stores and you can’t go on any side quests. And now after I have explained why this game style choice was made in the “early” stages of the game, I hope that everyone will stop complaining about why the game sucks and how they can’t get past the first act. Look if you like open world games that’s fine ’cause I like them as well, but you can’t say you hate a game on just the style of gameplay alone. You have to also comment on the graphics, the sound, and in this case the story. If you can’t then why even bother putting something on a list or review it. Joe I love your reviews and I’m still a fan, but I completely disagree with you and Spoony on this one. Also I’m not sure if you did your research or not, but it sounds like you heard this before hand. Square did say that you first play through Cocoon that is supposed to be technologically advanced and is your enemy, but also your home and that you can’t go exploring until you reach Grand Pulse. I’m not saying it wasn’t a bad choice in gameplay, but unlike other games that pull this move, like Bioshock 2, this game gave a reason why it chose it’s gameplay style. Look I’m just going to say I loved this game just like 7 and yes I have played through all of Final Fantasy 7. And to me that’s quit an accomplishment, if you manage to make me think “Humh this is almost as good as 7″ then obviously they did something right.

I won’t try to make a list on the worst games, as I don’t have enough breadth in said area to have any accuracy. So I’ll stick to disappointments.

    1. Metroid: Other M – Well, that should be an obvious pick. As someone who thoroughly enjoyed the Prime series, there was just nothing I could find appealing. Particularly Samus turning into a whining idiot and forgoing the cliche ability loss for an even stupider method of restriction. Why, Nintendo, did you let Team Ninja kill one of my favorite characters?

    2. Fable III – also obvious… Fable was a great game, Fable II was good but not as great, and Fable III is just… well, mediocre at best. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still entertained by the general concept. The kingly decisions in particular are intriguing. But what the bloody hell is Lionhead doing? They ignored the concerns about the last game, instead making those problems worse and screwing up what they did right. The Sanctuary makes everything harder to navigate, takes longer, interactions are duller, the touch system useless, fetch quests, the morph system fraudulent, the story sudden and uninspired, and so forth. And you better damn well have xbox live.

    3. Final Fantasy – yeah, I know. Fear the fanboy. But I’ve been saying all year, despite the high review scores and legions of sales… I’m just not impressed. I agree with you – I’ve been saying that Final Fantasy and even Square are in some trouble. They are plagued by the JRPG malaise. It’s like they’ve run out of ideas, become lazy, and are just cashing in on title and fanboyism. Nowhere was that more apparent than in the MMO. I did not enjoy XII – all that it did to take combat away from you and make you a spectator as well as substituting random battles with random chests and trying to get away with it (the latter being far, far more painful), asinine and pointless characters made with the express purpose of appealing to a mainstream audience… there was no way I could approve of XIII considering what other steps backwards they’ve taken. Final Fantasy X is stupid, but I have far better memories than I do with these latest titles.

That’s about all I can think of… oh wait, I think Bioshock 2 should get some consideration. Considering what atmosphere and story they created the first time, they pass off the reigns, promise us power, insert obligatory multiplayer, hit the blend button, and what do you get? Something not quite as spellbinding.

Anyway Joe, I’ll give you a +1 Orb of Intense… Doohickey Thing if you bring some of that epic sweeping my way.

Another vote for Civ 5. I played 3 & 4 for years each and after a week with 5 I was totally bored with it. The game is way too easy. Even if the stack of doom was shit, at least going to war had consequences in the previous ones. Now you can steamroll everyone at your will. Or if you like to expand, no hurry ’cause half of the world is unpopulated in the 1700′s. The AI is god damn stupid. Each civ mostly sits on its ass and waits for Napoleon to fuck them up.

Civ 5 had some great additions to it but the difficulty just fucks everything up. I tried turning it up to 11 where the AI just blatantly starts to cheat (I think it even says so in the difficulty settings). The whole game goes into Total War mode where everyone declares war on everyone in the first 5 turns. Fuck this game.

i actually enjoy FFXIII even if people seem to dislike it with a vengeance i find the gameplay… oddly relaxing and i always enjoy seeing such high level rigging/skinning, texturing and modelling in a videogame (force of habit from work).

I tend to stay away from bad games as much as i can so the only title i’ve disliked in 2010 is Fallout: New Vegas but that was because it bugged out all the time for me on the 360 and the gameplay wasn’t that appealing for me… XD

Top ten best games of 2010, Red Dead Redemption, Dead Rising 2, Assassins Creed: Brotherhood, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Star Craft 2, Super Mario Galaxy TM 2, Halo: Reach, God of War 3, Super Meat Boy, and Mass Effect 2… These are not in order except that ME2 is number 1… it’s the only game that came out less than 10 years ago that I’ve played through more than 15 times.

Top 5 most anticipated games of 2011.

    5. Diablo 3: It loses points because of the lack of variety I’ve seen in class setup. 5 classes in total and no specialization. Other than that the game looks great.
    4. Dragon Age II: It loses points for its predecessor’s truly mediocre expansion pack. Otherwise it would have broken the top 3… partly because I’m a Bioware fanboy
    3. Elderscrolls V: Skyrim: The only reason this isn’t higher on the list is because of 1. It’s sandbox game, and I usually prefer theme-park types provided they aren’t too linear. 2. There is a serious lack of information.
    2. Mass Effect 3: Obviously it would be high on this list, but again it suffers the serous lack of information that Skyrim does.
    1. Star Wars: The Old Republic: A Bioware game that I can play with friends. A really meaty back story. A cover system and responsive combat in a non-twitched based MMO. Tunnel shooting space combat reminiscent of Star Fox. 8 classes with two advanced classes each with 2 AC and 1 shared skill set. Getting you companions to grind shit out for you. telekinetically chucking giant rocks. A Star Wars MMO that doesn’t break lore. Quite a few races (favorite is Miraluka thus far). The list goes on, and that is why it’s number 1… I cannot wait for this game.

I think it’ll be released in April or May. Square’s determined to maximize next fiscal year’s profits, since the past one has been disappointing.

I haven’t played a lot of games this year, but the biggest disappointment for me was “Front mission evolved” I rememberer when I was younger, front mission 3 was like one of the greatest games ever on PS, perfect turn based game, interesting, new and cool robot parts. But now they literally raped this game franchise. There are already enaugh action games and not so much turn based games, especially good ones.
    1. – Changing game type was the first wrong thing to do.
    2. – it is so boring, but i played it through just to know how it will end.
    3. Story – boring and unorginal
    4. characters – boriiiing, badly voiced and villains were so annoying, I just hated them. In boss battles they were repeating sentences too often and only had like 2 or 3 per boss fight and all of them were annoying and so cliche.
    5. boss battles was repetitive. You need to battle some of them like 3 different times and no metter you beated them like two times already, they act like some macho idiots even in last battles.
    6. robot parts and weapons – no balance at all – there are like few decent weapon combos that you can use, all other are just garbage, that cant do any damage.

It’s always sad for me to see Alpha Protocol on a worst of the year list. I thought it was excellent in many aspects, including the dialogue and RPG gameplay elements. Yet at the same time, I can understand why some do not like it. It has problems, some of which are serious.

I agree. Alpha Protocol was really good… on PC. The Xbox 360 version (which I assume is what he played) was glitched to hell and back. The PC version only had minor issues, and ran much smoother.

My pick for most disappointing game of 2010 is Backbreaker. So much potential was wasted. The tackle engine and team customization were brilliant and I hope they fix everything and make a sequel.

Alpha Protocol is perhaps the single game I have the most mixed feelings on, ever. I was pumped about it and even after playing through it I generally walked away with a good impression. But at the same time I was annoyed with how bad the combat and general presentation of the game was.

So I’m stuck between wanting to recommend it, for the awesome dialog system and RP elements. But also want to shun it for how inexcusably bad the rest of it is.

Hey Joe, just wanted to chime in on the Deus Ex 3 delay. It sucks, I know, and I do blame two lousy Final Fantasy games for it, but it’s not nearly as bad as you might think. Apparently, when they said “next year” they meant “next fiscal year”, which in this case seems to be starting in April 2011. Granted, they didn’t lock down a specific date, so it could be any time in that period, but I think it’s more that they want to show a dramatic upswing from last year’s terrible failure rather than have those games dragged down by something they had nothing to do with. All sources I’ve seen still indicate an early 2011 release for Deus Ex 3, so I’m thinking April or May.

I hardly even bought ten games in 2010, let alone games that actually were released in 2010, so both my Top 10 best and top 10 worst would look the same only reversed.

    Let’s see what did I buy that was a 2010 release…

    6: Mass Effect 2
A great game, all that annoyed me was the resource farming, which was tedious, especially with a mouse.

    5: Worms Reloaded
I loved this one too, maybe the weapon variety is a bit poor compared to the Worms 2 based titles, but it’s tons of fun nonetheless, and hats are a good thing in Worms (unlike in TF2)

    4: Bioshock 2:
I dont know why people hate this so much, I loved it and even if the story had holes (although some can be explained) it was great and engaging. Also the gameplay was fun.

    3: Aliens vs Predator:
Now here is where games actually start to disappoint. The Rock Paper Scissors melee system was crap and I basically had to relearn the whole game. From AvP2, as an alien I was used to pouncing at enemies from large distances and light-footedly dance around them lashing out quickly, combining high-jumps and pounces to be as hard to hit as possible, with the new game it became pounce at them and if you dont kill them before they recover from your attack hope you get rock when your enemy chooses scissors. It’s not quite that bad but I miss the dynamic pace of the older games, and I’m really pissed off that for this the AvP2 online multiplayer support had been discontinued, not necessarily because it’s worse, but because it plays like an entirely different game.

    2: Transformers War for Cybertron:
I had hopes that this would become sort of like Battlefield with Transformers, but I was disappointed. Well the single player campaign did kind of feel like a modern military shooter but with double-jumping robots that turn into vehicles but the multiplayer was not what I hoped. Small maps, small player numbers per game and absolutely nobody online to play anything else than Deathmatch (which in my opinion is only a fun game mode if the game features teams that are entirely different, like in AvP 2).
Also being a giant robot blasting away at other giant robots gets its purpose beaten out of it when absolutely everything is a giant robot (including the very planet you’re standing on). You just feel like a normal sized robot.
This game should get larger maps, 32 player support, be transported at least partially to earth and have some environmental destruction to it. Imagine BFBC2 with giant robots but less fog and dust, that would be awesome.
But even despite these things i still had fun playing it, also few shooters offer free character customization that lasts permanently and doesnt have to be unlocked with weeks of consecutive playing.

    1: Fallout New Vegas:
The only one that really didnt give me anything. It’s nothing but a big DLC for Fallout 3, and as i shouldve expected of bethesda, one that is riddled with bugs (I still havent gotten my Fallout 3 addons to work).
I don’t understand how you can take a game that by the time had its bugs reduced to an acceptable amout and do nothing but add a few new items and enemies and place it in a different map, yet have the whole thing be messed up completely again!
I don’t really know what to think of this, if you can look past the technical problems its decent but certainly not worth the full price if you have already paid full price for Fallout 3. I think it comes down to this:
If the bugs are mostly cleaned up and you have neither Fallout 3 nor Fallout New Vegas, get FNV, because it has more variety in enemies weapons and everything. If you already have Fallout 3 don’t bother with FNV its not worth 50 bucks for an addon.

Hmm… I still don’t see why you hate Sonic Free Riders so much. Though I haven’t played the game I’ve seen enough videos from other people to get the jist of how it is. By no means is it a good game, I’ll agree to that (mainly due to lack of other control methods than Kinect.) It doesn’t look terrible, good graphics, variety with courses a good soundtrack outside the main song of the game. Plus it was a launch Kinect Game… not a good one, but it’s not like a standard has been set yet on Kinect. In general, it’s outclassed by Mario Kart and even Sonic and Sega All Star’s Racing which was released in March Last year. It was an experiment game which didn’t work. If the game was released say, 3 years into the life of the Kinect, then I would admit it would have been a terrible game. But Control-Wise, we don’t know if it’s problem of the game or problem of the kinect, since there is nothing to compare it to… except the knock-off, which is bad. He he… All your problems seem to relate to the controls only. And I hear mixed cases about the controls with this game. But at the end of the day. I beat you would agree that the game would have been better if it had a regular controller option. And it probably would have, might have been Microsoft forcing Kinect Only controls for being a launch title game. Oh, and skip the intro.

From your list, my choice is Kane and Lynch 2 being the worst game. Horribly Short, Horribly Dull, Very Disappointing, No challenge (The last sequence in the game is way too easy, and 2 DOGS as final bosses, seriously?) and just a bad experience in general. And we can’t praise controls or multiplayer when it was just copy-pasted from the last game in the series and had no improvements whatsoever.

As for Games I played to finish off. Ugh… Just Dance 2. Just Dance was the worst game of 2009, Just Dance 2 hardly improves on it. Adding modes like “Just Sweat” where you just change the score display from “Points” to “Calories” does not count as brand new. And the controls are still as bad as the first game was. Stop with these games, or if you can’t due to sales. At least make them GOOD. Working Controls, Decent modes (Like a Create-a-dance mode for example). Massive Song Selection (70+ songs, it’s not that hard. And that’s on Disc. Whoring out Overpriced DLC does not count.) Nunchuk option, it’s a danicng game. I expect to be able to move my other hand and have it recognised. Just, Make, The, Game, WORK!

    And I’m done.

Now I wanna make this list clear, this isn’t necessarily a list of bad games. Yes bad games are on here. However to me the worst thing a game can do is, be really good at one thing or in core areas, and drop the ball where and when it counts. A bad game is a bad game, you can tell by looking at it, and you don’t buy it. My list is more so the mostly disappointing games of 2010. These are games that I caution people about buying, as they ignorantly think little Timmy will like them and place them on the counter in front of me at Gamestop to buy.

    Number 10: Final Fantasy 13.

As far as J-RPG’s go this was par for the course, however it shouldn’t have been. With games like FF6, War of the Lions, FF1 etc. It should have been a good game, ( however since 7 its been getting worse, so I don’t know what I was expecting.) Or AT LEAST a reasonably passable game. I’ve been playing though this game again to write an in depth review/lets play, (because of the 13-2 announcement, and VS 13 6min trailers that when up today.) and my GOD is it boring. I’m an hour in and I’ve already got 16 pages of notes on whats wrong with this game. Plus a recurring Nazi joke that the game just begs for. ( Play the first hour again and you’ll see what I mean.) With each game that comes out its getting more and more apparent that Square wants to make movies, not games. The biggest problem is when I see opining credits I see the same names I’ve seen for the past 15 years. I know FF is there baby, but FIRE these people or give FF to a new team, preferably a team that hates Final Fantasy. Than lets see some innovation.

    Number 9: Red Dead Redemption.
I can’t really pin down what I don’t like about this game. Is it the hype, is it how everyone is noting this as the best game this year against games like Brotherhood and Masseffect 2. I think its a lot of little things. Padded out length, boring landscapes. ( I live in Texas I’ve seen it all before.) A bad ending. Even the Zombie expansion just ended. Some quest were very nit-picky on when and how, and worst of all it was an extremely buggy game. John was a generic, one note character, and the plot had one line to it. Nothing I did impacted the world, and there was an odd feeling about being able to destroy an entire town, one moment, and being the most polite faithful guy the next. Was it a bad game, no, it just wasn’t as good as everyone said it was.

    Number 8: Lost Plaint 2.
This falls into the ‘did this game really need to be made’ territory. Answer, no. The first one wasn’t that great and the second one just was. It didn’t do anything necessarily wrong , again it just was. BUT it wasn’t by far the most pointless game of 2010.

Number 7: Starwars the Force Unleashed 2.
Just stop. . . . Starwars TFU was a good star wars game, and I’ll stand by my opinion of if this game was given a year more of development time, it would have probably been better. This game was the character assassination of Star-killer. Turning him from a guy trying to figure out whats right, whats wrong, and his place in the world. And turned him into a whinny Final Fantasy character. Star-killer was a bad ass, but in this it was like when Vader cloned him, he kept his balls. The game was short and padded, which doesn’t even begin to make sense. Sure the banter of Koda and Star-killer in the Area was bad ass, but every time this game got good, it got boring. Starwars The Force Unleashed didn’t need a squeal, however it got one and the only good thing I can say about it was the Light Side ending was kinda epic.

    Number 6: Star-Trek online
What Joe said was it. Its boring and repetitive. Its not even the good kinda bad, you know like some of the movies. Its not fun bad, or WTF bad. It just is, and that’s its crime.

    Number 5: Dragon Age Awakening.
How do I begin to describe this game, and my hate for it. The big draw for me with Dragon Age Origins, was not only the multiple races, but the choices, and the character interactions. Choices were ripped out for Court Rulings, that were more a “what achievement do I want, this time”choice. Relationships were GONE, companions form the first game vanished, with the exception of Ogren, who I liked talking to, but wasn’t a fan of his combat style so I never used him in the first game, and Alister who makes a five second cameo and then leaves. For no apparent reason. And the bugs, don’t even get me started on the bugs. Save bugs, equipment bugs, stat bugs, quest bugs, doors not opining bugs. It was a mess. Awakening was an experiment in; “How fast can we reasonably push out a Dragon age title and fans by it. With Dragon Age II on the horizon I’m weary of it. Will it go back to Dragon Age 1 or will it be Awakening all over again?

    Number 4:Fallout New Vegas.
To say this iteration of Fallout is riddled with bugs and problems, is an understatement . The biggest one, is a bug that will fuck up your save data, all of it, no matter how many slots you have, and it likes doing this 50 hours into the game. The game was dull, the story repetitive, uninspired, and bland. Vegas was boring, and bland, and most the quest/NPC. Were again boring and bland. This game felt like a chore to play, the choices that you made basically came down to, what gets me the most gear and loot, oh and doesn’t piss these guys over here off to much, so I can do there quests. Fallout 3 was good, this could have been good, it had so much potential, but with the bugs, and the boring quest, there was no want to replay it, after losing 50 plus hours of saved game data.

    Number 3: Bio Shock 2.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the first one, but I liked the look of the game. Bioshock was clear rip off of better games and books, that told the same story MUCH better. Plot elements fall apart when you start to think about it to much, and it was clear that the writers didn’t understand the message what they were ripping off was. Than comes Bio Shock 2 and I found myself thinking, different writers, a different team, could be okay. I was wrong, this is the poster boy for games that don’t need to exist. It’s the last hour of Bioshock given a convoluted plot, It didn’t need to exist in the first place.

    Number 2: Fable 3
Again there is nothing I can say that Joe already hasn’t, in this video of his top 32. Its a bad game, but whats worse is there are 4 more licensed, and the worse part is we will probably play them. Most of us will be smart and rent them, but we will play them.

    Number 1: Vanquish
This might be surprising to people, because the game was good, hell it was great. So WHY the number one spot? Because for having good game-play mechanics and incredible visuals. It lacked a good story. It lacked verity, it felt like 6 hours of the same up hill battle with gimmicky boss battles peppered here and there, the dialog was bad. This game at its core was great, but everything else was horrible. Its a prime example of everything I hate about the gaming industry. In Game design 101 they teach you, the most important things about a game are Game-play and graphics, than possibly story, but if you don’t have time just ship. It fail just short of being game of the year material, because someone got lazy. It it had more mission variety, and better writers this could have been up there with Gears of War and Masseffect, but its such a waste. This may not be the worst game of 2010 but it the most disappointing, because it could have been so good.

I wanna thank you Angry Joe, I’ve been watching you for over a year on TGWTG, and I respect your opinion. You tell it how it is. Your Joe every man, fighting for the everyman, giving reviews that have ether pushed me into getting a game, or steered me clear of it. Keep up the good work.

Well being a rabid follower of Final Fantasy since it’s SNES days I can without a doubt say that I completely agree with you on Final Fantasy XIII and XIV. It’s a miracle I managed to finish the story of XIII but after playing it I couldn’t go back and do the side stuff or the achievements. And this is shocking because I’m a huge achievement whore. I’m working on Mass Effect and FFXI as we speak.
I didn’t get a chance to try FFXIV but I was in the beta for a bit and my bro got the game. Yeah they really screwed the pooch on this one. Personally I think FFXI was the last decent one before things went to hell. Even FFXII pissed me the hell off. All I can do is hope that the new team they made for FFXIV fixes it or I’m not holding out much hope for the future of the franchise.

With the other 10 worst games I do have to thank you Joe. You saved me a lot of cash and have fueled my gamer rage. I still can’t believe what they did to Fable 3. Fable 2 wasn’t sunshine and cupcakes but it was good enough for me to stick to it till the end. I don’t even want to gamefly 3 or buy it if they release the ‘Yeah, here’s everything in 1 DVD for $20 screwing the early adopters and addon payers’ pack.

I really don’t have a worst 10 this year of my own. I don’t think I even played 10 games that came out this year yet. But I am eager to see your top 10 hits so I can look for them in the used game shelves.

    Joe army forever!!

I honestly thought that Kane and Lynch 2 would be number one on the list, so when it was number 4 I thought What could possibly be worse?

The answer made me laugh FF13 and sonic OF COURSE!!

My worst game was without question Final Fantasy 13 fuck that game. I could forgive the mediocre battle system and linearity, but the story of that game was so FUCKING bad I could not stand it. After finishing the game i thought “This is it? This is the best SE could do as it’s first FF on the PS3? Are you kidding me?”

But there is one thing about FF13 that always confuse me. Everyone and their mother says “The game gets good 20 – 25 hours in” to me after 25 hours the game just got worse. The story just pissed me off more until I just screamed “OH COME ON!!!” out loud.

Shame on you SE you better not fuck up Versus and Type-0 or there will be hell to pay.

I don’t have a top 10 as I usually only play games that i know I will love but I wanted to mention:

Civilization 5 – I know you raved about Civ 5 but for me this was a HUUGE disappointment, it just doesn’t work properly,it is slow as shit and multiplayer just crashes all the time. What is the point in brining out a game that is much worse than it’s predecessor, it feels kinda consoley like revolutions which is certainly a bad thing. I wish I hadn’t got this one at full price on pre-order.

Star Trek Online? A terrible game indeed, but it got like twice the amount of attention from Cryptic than Champions Online did. Typical quick cash in, with no postgame content and Cryptic making only token attempts at adding any kind of new content. And it had a chance to be THE superhero game – what a disappointment. And I bought a lifetime subscription, worst spent money of my life. The only reason it’s not on my list of worst 2010 games is it’s from 2009.

Now, seriously. FF XIII, worse than Kane and Lynch and other atrocities you mentioned earlier? I cannot agree. It’s a decent… no – good game. I had a lot of fun playing it, but it seems many critics do not share my opinion here. I am baffled why. No, it’s not that – I understand their criticism, but I think they miss the point.
Final Fantasy XIII is criticised for:
    1. Linear gameplay. Now, you liked Half-Life 2, right? Who didn’t? Well, that title had extremely linear, tunnel-like gameplay too. But you could say, FF is an RPG, it’s different! RPG titles focus on choice and freedom of action! WRONG. That’s what western RPGs do. jRPGs focus on characters and plot, in that order. And linear gameplay helps with that – it’s just taking the jRPG design to its logical extreme.
The second I entered the open-ended part of FF XIII, I rapidly started losing interest. So I was glad it eventually went back to tunnel gameplay again. That’s right, GLAD.
    2. Easy, automated combat. Now, it shows that people who complain about this didn’t really get too far into the game. Or they are video game masters that can beat any encounter without trying, I don’t know. But still, without good paradigm setup and frequent Shifts during combat, you will get raped hard. By random encounters none the less, not to mention the bosses. The Paradigm Shifts themselves are all about precise timing and you have your hands full, so it doesn’t really matter that you control only one character.
So yeah. People who complain about this? They only went through the start of the game, where the fights are supposed to be easy to make you grow familiar with the system.
Having the game end when the POV character is knocked out can be a bad design decision though. I think the creators did that to prevent the game from being too easy, but eh – if you didn’t like it, I won’t complain.
    3. Annoying characters. To be more precise, Hope and Vanille.
Let’s go with the latter first. She is always perky and energetic even when the situation is serious and it pisses some people off. Well, the game makes it pretty clear that she is only PRETENDING to be cheerful to not make others feel too depressed. Vanille understands the weight of the situation, and you have to actively try to not notice it.
Hope gets hate for being a whiny teen. And you know what? (Spoilers time) The kid lost his fucking mother just a few minutes into the game! That would make anyone depressed. Did I mention he’s a teenager, too? They are not exactly known for having unshakable composure. He also gets better in time. Better like you wouldn’t believe. It’s called character development, something FF XIII has plenty of.

So yeah, that’s it for me rebutting common Final Fantasy XIII criticism. As far as the FF series is concerned, I had most fun since FF IX, and possibly earlier. FF X and XII aren’t really to my tastes.

But FF XIV, now that is genuine fail.

Well I don’t have much of a top 10 list because I refuse to buy a game unless I know I will enjoy it, I’m not much of an impulse buyer. But the game that I bought day 1 that disappointed me is Fable 3.

I bought it day 1 collector’s edition because I enjoyed the previous games, sure they weren’t perfect in any way but I still found them enjoyable. Fable 3 is the first game I’ve ever bought and sold it days later. It’s just so linear and stream lined it’s impossible to consider it an “Epic role-playing game” that Peter Molyneux stated it would be.

It’s hard to consider even the choices hard when there’s that little bright aura or flames basically telling you what choice is what. Tired of the good and bad decisions, in reality there is no simple good or bad answer.

And the incredibly simplified “Road to Rule” system. There is nothing interesting about it, simply “Oh open this chest and it increases all your magic damage and charging speed.”

Also the incredibly stupid npc interactions. What kind of role-playing game simply gives you a random expression instead of letting you choose your own? And like you said in your review Joe, no one ever has anything interesting to say. Honestly there was a few entertaining side quests but 80% I found were extremely boring.

Sorry if this was a bit of a rant, simply can’t stand this game.

It kinda feels like everyone’s trying to blame FF13 for everything that goes wrong these days. Seriously, it’s not that bad. I’d go so far as to say it’s a decent game. Linear to a fault, yes, and I would have preferred less linearity, but the thing you have to understand about linearity is it tends to allow for a stronger storyline. Old FF games like 4 and 6 were pretty linear and have darn good stories, except when FF6 goes almost completely non-linear in the second half of the game and the story falls apart.

FF13 didn’t deserve to be on this list. FF14 was far, far worse, imo. NBA Jam and Epic Mickey would have been far better candidates for this list than FF13. NBA Jam completely misses what made the original Midway games fun and exciting, and (speaking from someone who played the Wii version) the control schemes are just stupid with no way to customize them. Epic Mickey suffers from bland gameplay and one of the worst cameras I’ve ever seen in a 3-D title. It’s so broken that half the time you’ll end up painting/thinning the floor instead of your target, forcing you to aim higher than needed and then often overshooting your target. It just made the game not fun to play.

And that’s my two cents on the matter. Otherwise reasonable list.

Ok this is gonna hurt me a lot, mostly because I don’t want to remember these games it will be a short list because I tended to dodge the bad games thanks to you guys.

    3 – Kane and Lynch 2
Oh how I wish I had cancelled my order from Amazon before your review came out but it was too late
my god the stuff said by Joe is correct DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!

    2 – Final Fantasy 13
Oh god……..oh sweet god…oh lord this game…THIS GAME was so annoying…so repetitive…and so frustrating to no end I have never felt a strong hate for a Final Fantasy game. I sold that game to reserve the 3ds.

    1 – Metroid Other M
    ……
Christ, this game hurt me so much like you Joe with Sonic Free riders I can’t even look at this game I’ll explain. I am a die hard Metroid fan, I love the franchise like I love Tron, seeing the trailer to other M for the first time I was full of joy to see Samus return once again to battle aliens and grab power ups like the bounty hunter that she is, I couldn’t wait for this game to come out. So I reserve it and buy it the day it came out…I was excited…until I played it, 1 the story is downright annoying as fuck, ok look…I don’t care if Samus speaks, I don’t care if she has personality but good god…Samus wouldn’t shut the fuck up about the Baby and ADAM!!!! I just wanted to play Metroid like I used to do back when I was playing Metroid Prime. 2, the gameplay, the fact that killing enemies to get health powerups and missiles are now replaced with just tilting the wii mote up to recharge everything…and I mean everything to me that takes the fun out of the game oh and I hate using the wii mote for this…this is what the Classic Controller is for, heck, half the time when I do recharge and tilt the wii mote up it stalls and I end up turning into a morph ball by accident and I also find myself running past enemies just to get to the boss, the one thing I hated most was shooting missiles, I hated the fact that when you go into first person mode you are completely still, you cannot move except left and right..and that’s the only way to shoot your missiles I find this annoying because some bosses require missiles to kill and they come at you fast so staying still is turning you into lunch for the aliens, this game was also too easy…I’m serious…I beat this game with 100 item completion on my first play through…on all metroid games I’d have to replay the game 10 or 20+ times to get to 100. oh and the cut scenes….I won’t spoil anything but I was pissed after those cut scenes ESPECIALLY HER ENCOUNTER WITH RIDLEY AAAAAARGH!!!!!!!!!!!. the only thing I loved in Other M was killing Nightmare….I hated that thing in Fusion.

Every time I talk about other M I go on a tangent and I never get mad at my beloved Metroid games except this one.

Dissapointing games for me from 2010

    1. Final Fantasy XIII- bad game

    2. Command and Conquer 4- bad game

    3. Mass Effect 2 good story and decent gameplay, but I did have some things that got in the way from me loving this game. The game is way too linear and stripped out a lot of customization features (like armor and weapons), brutal mode takes away enjoyment of the game when playing as an engineer (hear its not as bad when playing other classes such as solider), and in brutal teammates just walk into enemy fire and die..

As someone who liked FF13 I have to respectfully disagree with your choice here. However, I can understand why people would have a problem with the game. Is it the best FF title? No(for me that’s 4) Is it the worst FF title? Again, no(that would be 2).

To be honest, I don’t really have a list of my worst games of 2010 Joe. But what I did realize, is that through all of the reviews from Channel Awesome/Blistered Thumbs is that we all have different tastes in games. What might be good to one person, may suck to someone else. A lot of times throughout the last year I kept getting pissed off because a TGWTG contributer had nothing but negativity towards something I enjoyed. But, you know, that’s the good thing about people on the internet. I mean, if we all liked the exact same things, then things would be far less interesting.

Am I saying you’re wrong? No. Am I saying that I’m right? No. All I’m saying is that everyone needs to accept the fact that someone may like something that you hate, and that’s okay.

PS. If you want a real introduction to Final Fantasy, go play 4 or 6 :)

I must respectfully disagree with you. Honestly, I think they made a mistake and that FF13 is actually still in development (maybe that FF13-2 we have been hearing about). I think FF13 was meant to be released under a different name, because honestly… it didn’t feel like a final fantasy game. It shamed the name. I have played 1-9 (never made it through 10, and didn’t dare touch 10-2) and even alpha and beta tested 11 (In doing so it made me loathe MMORPGS… ugh the thought of entering a realm that no one was ready for in the interest of finding bugs is just… ARG! NO ONE MADE IT!.. erm sorry about that)

The core of the Final Fantasy series was always free realm. Walk anywhere do anything and try not to let yourself get killed while doing various quests in an open world. FF13 was the complete opposite. Perhaps it is just me, but I believe that a proper RPG is one where you can make any decision on your own that affects game play. FF13 force fed everything to you and I sincerely hope the Enix fixes this. They need to reevaluate what they are doing. Stop doing remakes and make a new game based on the old system. Believe me I would not mind playing a game that looks like it belongs on the NES in return for having a great story and a proper RPG set-up.

I don’t want to see one of my favorite franchises of all time go down in flames.

Also, I don’t think you were in the right mood for Final Fantasy XIII. Kind of like whenever I played Final Fantasy games in the past; they were good, but I just sort of started playing other things, and forgot about them. I know a lot of hardcore fans seem to bitch and moan about 13, but honestly, I really don’t see why it can’t be great in its own right. 14 looks bad, don’t get me wrong, but 13…Eh, I’d probably still give it a try. I’ve only actually played 11 games released in 2010 myself (12 if you count Mega Man Zero Collection, which was a 2010 release but is just a collection of four older games released for the DS), and I stayed away from anything I didn’t think I’d like.

The only game I played that I didn’t much like was FF 13, and there I do disagree with you. The story and most of the characters sucked, no doubts there, but I don’t mind the linearity one bit (in fact, I find it gives the game at least some sense of focus that the story failed to give it), and found the combat quite good. They did in fact improve the combat from previous titles I’ve played (except 10), adding strategy to it, not taking it away, and managed to take the in-battle class change concept FF 10-2 introduced and improve upon it, indeed designing the whole system around it. If they could have gotten much better writers, it could have been a good game. Pity.

As for disappointing, I can point to two mildly disappointing ones. Sonic 4, which reused entirely too many stage and boss concepts from past Sonic games for what was supposed to be a new retro-style game in the vein of Mega Man 9 and 10. And Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, which was still quite fun, but was too easy (save for the bonus bosses) and explained too little of the story in the end. At least that latter will hopefully be rectified with the sequel they all but announced in the epilogue of the game.

Worst game i’ve played this year was without a doubt Fable 3.
I just can’t belive what the series have turned in to… Loved the first one, second one was not great but playable but Fable 3 was just horrible.

Wait, Final Fantasy XIII was your introduction?! Joe, you poor sheltered soul. You need to be educated.

When you said there was a game worse than Sonic Free Riders, I was almost expecting a sort of angry voice distortion, like in Plinkett’s reviews XD.

Hard to say if I have a “worst games of ’10″ list, since I tend to stay away from bad games (since I can barely afford games in the first place), so um… well, I heard Other M was bad >_<.

That is indeed a great list. I just disagree with GT5. Though I admit it is harmful to your health if that is your only racing game (I use NFS:HP to cool off) because it will INFURIATE you. The positives of GT5 far outweigh the negatives. The overly aggressive AI is my only real qualm with it, and I have played it extensively with both a controller and a proper racing wheel. (Note: the wheel makes a WORLD of a difference)

But I am also a total petrol head… so my attitude with it is skewed. But I still love it none the less.

Great video Joe. I personally love Star Trek Online and Alpha Protocol, but opinions are opinions and everyone’s entitled to them. Now, I haven’t played many games from 2010, let alone any that truly disappointed me, but if I had to choose a game that kinda let me down, it would be Gran Turismo 5. Don’t get me wrong, GT5 was still in my top 10 of 2010 and I do enjoy playing it, but I was expecting so much more from my first Gran Turismo game. I was expecting some more car customization like in Forza or something and some aspects of the game felt kinda clunky. It was still a great game, just not all I hoped it would be.

I loved Risen on the PC myself, and I will remember it well. Can’t wait for Risen 2.

Made by the same team who made the first three Gothic games, which I also enjoyed.
But it’s OK that you didn’t like it. Not everyone has to like the same games.

I think everyone knew Sonic Riders would be number 1, hehe.

One bad game I played this year, Rock of the Dead. It was pretty bad. Think Typing of the Dead, but like a rhythm game. It just didn’t work all that well.

Funny you mentioned FFXIII, when FFXIII-2 was announced today.

you guys really should allow people to edit for awhile longer, the window of opportunity just seems very small, any way:
btw the game that made me the most angry this year was fallout new vegas, i know people love it and i cant really say they are wrong, but for me this game is the modern version of brotherhood of steel, i was so angry and sad when i played it, and i kept hearing my friends and ppl on the net praising it so i kept going back to see if i was missing the “turn game awesome” button, but no, there was nothing there, and not that i had high hopes for this game to begin with, all i hoped was that it would be 1/4th as fun as new reno, it didn’t even manage to be anywhere near as good as one area in fallout 2 (which to be fair is my favourite game, so the bar is set pretty high).

Joe, on behalf of all Final Fantasy diehards, I want to say I’m so sorry you were introduced to the franchise with FFXIII. I was so pissed off with that game, it was a huge slap in the face to me. As for FFXIV, I don’t normally play MMORPGs, and I knew something would be terribly wrong with that one. Looks like I was right. Whenever FFXV comes out, it will have A LOT to prove to me. If it fails, I may have no choice but to declare the Final Fantasy franchise dead. However, if you do get the chance, please check out some of the old school titles. They really are amazing.

okay i am a little shocked that you briefly mentioned divinity 2 as a poor rpg, granted i have only played the “the dragon knight saga” version of it, but it is my favourite rpg of 2010, yes i played mass effect 2, unless it got horribly butchered in the xbox port with them taking out most of the npcs, the entire story and the combat i’m surprised that it was mentioned, however briefly.

as for the list itself, well as a huge fan of your videos there where no surprises apart from FF 13 since their where no review, and i actually like number ones theme song, it makes me smile :P
