Fans Are Translating Final Fantasy Type-0
Will Square Enix shut down the project?

The mystery surrounding the recently trademarked Type-0 now has some light shed upon it. The PSP iteration of the Final Fantasy XIII series, Agito, is now known as Final Fantasy Type-0 (Which, going forward, will have no relation to Final Fantasy XIII). Director Hajime Tabata felt the need to change the name based on how different the design and gameplay was from Final Fantasy XIII. In fact, Square-Enix is looking start an entire new spin-off series, if the other recently trademarked Type-1, Type-2, and Type-3 are any indicator.
The game is shaping up to be quite a beast: Spanning over two UMDs and including over 30 voiced actors. Based on the trailer, the game appears to be much more action-oriented than any other previous entry in the Final Fantasy series. The trailer also revealed something else quite interesting: A Summer 2011 release, in Japan at least. No official date for a US or EUR release has been made yet.
It’s interesting how this game has taken such a drastic turn in development. Was the story supposed to take place in the FFXIII world? If so, how has the story been shifted to an entire new series? In any event, it’s great to see a dedicated PSP Final Fantasy game that isn’t a port or remake. Hopefully Square-Enix will put their noses to the grind stone and give us an awesome new PSP series. Taylor’s love of the PSP flourished during his 1 year stay in South Korea. Whether it be on the subway, bus, or long walks on the beach, the PSP’s allure grew in Taylor’s heart. When he’s not playing games, he enjoys playing the guitar, making videos, and trying to learn the words to various KPOP songs. Favorite game of this generation: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Favorite game of all time: Persona 4.

I preordered this game a year or two ago and never saw light of its release. Hopefully they just release the damn thing and it is actually a good game. I ended up buying Lunar for PSP instead at the time with my preorder.
So Crisis Core and Dissidia don’t count? Or is it because Crisis Core is an entry in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII and Dissidia is just a crossover fighting game?
They’re already planning for this to be a tetralogy? Isn’t that a bit pretentious?
Is it confirmed what kind of gameplay this game will have? Or is it just speculation that it will be more action-oriented?
If you watch the battles in the trailer, to right side of the screen there are moves link to the four buttons, seeming to indicate a more action battle system. The battles in general seem more action-oriented. And Director Hajime Tabata himself said it was more action-oriented.
From what I’m seeing here and there it’s an ATB based system similar to Crisis Core? I never actually got around to playing Crisis Core though so I can’t vouch for whether this is more “action oriented” than their other ATB based systems?

Not sure how much that’s altered since the screens were released, etc. Judging from the trailer, who knows. Seems you can directly control your selected character, with other party members AI controlled? They may have dropped ATB altogether for the more action oriented angle?
The more I watch the gameplay segments of the trailer, the more I’m assuming you control a single character and potentially swap between other characters in a “tag” style system?
There are moments where the main character’s vitals display is joined by two others next to it. So I’m kinda theorising that you switch between characters in that kind of “tag” style system, and perhaps there’re cooldowns for attacks and skills, etc to create that need to chain attacks between your party members? Could be interesting if that’s the angle they’re going for, but it’s hard to make out if that’s what is happening. But I don’t believe I see other party members in combat with you as was seen before, etc. Pure conjecture, but seems like it might be a nice fun battle system if they’re going for the action RPG vibe.
