In the fighting game, does the main draw of the series–the transformations–ever play a part? I mean, I guess you could set Ranma to swap out with Ranko, or Genma and Mr. Panda, but that doesn’t cover everyone else. Hopefully, their animal forms are somehow relevant.
Nice Work man, i love that others players besides me are playing import games, i love Ranma is one of the 4 series that got me into anime, (Samurai Pizza Cats, Saint Seiya and Sailor Moon are the others).
I think you should do a review about Namco X Capcom or Tales of Graces F, well is your choice, because i don’t know the rules of YCPT.
Great work and keep at it JW, and Yanki….STOP WASHING JW WITH WATER, HE IS NOT A GIRL!
Ranma 1/2 was my first anime, but even though I’d consider it a starter anime… the ridiculous storylines seem to hold the test of time. However for me it’s been a dozen years, so it’s difficult to watch since I used play it so often that I would sleep to it.
Ranma 1/2 is a wonderful and extremely UNDER-RATED ANIME. Absolutely dived me deeper into Anime. Yes the video game was fun because you played as the characters you so fall in love with!
great video, man! I wasn’t too fond of the series because i guess it was too outrageous, but i did play the fighting game. I look forward to your other videos.
Love the manga and anime series!!! I think I might have played some of those games on an before…*thinks too hard and brain starts to hurt*. Anyways, that was a great video (and that puzzle game looks very interesting).
I loved the manga but I’ve never really watched the show. I’ve tried but I hate watching series through Youtube, so it being on Netflix is great for me .
You mentioned that Ranma 1/2 was on Netflix, but unfortunately it’s only season 6 and 7 so hopefully they’ll add the great 1st and 2nd seasons eventually, but I won’t hold my breath. Excellent Ranma gaming retrospective!
The review is great. Loved all the funny bits. The games look pretty fun and that puzzle game looks pretty difficult. I kept getting confused on how you’re suppose to play it.
Hey Justin, cool video. Are you familiar with djclyve on YouTube? He does awesome Ranma 1/2 character profiles. I haven’t personally played any of the Ranma 1/2 games. But I have seen some of the anime and read some of the manga. It really is a good series.
I watched Ranma ½ and have a couple volumes of the manga.the only bad thing was that at one point it just seemed like nothing would ever happen, they’d find a cure or Ranma would get into a fight with Akane, Ryoga, Kuno etc. and in the end find out it the cure was fake, and Ranma wins the fight.
But I really want to watch all the episodes again because it was great and I really want to see the episodes I haven’t seen (they never showed beyond a certain point on the channel I watched it on)
anyway, I digress.
Why would Yanki J think you were cursed? … have you been to China lately, Jew Wario?
funny how you didn’t talk about how ranma is Anti-JewWario about kitties (being scared instead of happy)
otherwise great and funny review as allways
Great video..
Ranma ½ is also what got me introduced to the manga and I can recommend it very much. It is hugely fan series that is easy to read. The story is not very difficult to understand, but it is very interesting and fun to follow. Also I don’t consider it being repetative as some mangas (and animes too) seem to be.
Although you might want to prepare yourself to the fact that almost every issue has Ranma fighting some weird kung fu against his rivals..
Also you can easily pick up any issue and you don’t need worry about not understanding the plot.
As for the anime – I have never watched it. But if it is anything like the manga I’d recommend that too.
And as for the games. Only one I have ever played is the RPG and you definitely cannot play it. I cannot understand a single word of Japanese and it is basically impossible to play. But it seemed like a very good game. I really liked Sailor Moon RPG on SNES and it reminded me of that. So if you know Japanese, you might want to give it also a try.
Also to note. I don’t think I have ever mentioned it, but I really like that Famicon-pillow. It’s awesome.
Dude I LOVE Ranma 1/2. Their is actually a VERY GOOD Parody of it on youtube. Those who know about the abridged series will now what I’m talking about. Here’s a link
Okay… I liked this review. A lot. (Like my LordKat impression there?)
The thing with the water was funny – and I imagine your wife had fun throwing it on you from off camera. At least, I assume it was her doing it! I’m not entirely sure why Yanki-J was so very desperate to turn you into a girl though… desperate for a girl in the house, maybe?
Breaking down the franchise of games was a good thing too. The Janken game reminds me a bit of “Yoshi” for the NES/GB, I have to say. Beyond that I don’t have any real compelling need to seek out the games you reviewed, but that’s okay.
The controller overlays are a master touch, though. Gamers are insanely visual creatures – so while in other reviews you’ve mentioned what button to press for an action or ability, actually giving some sort of demonstration is a very, very good thing. Kudos to you, or whoever else thought of that.
As for the next game you’ll be reviewing — squee! A few years ago I sampled a ROM (don’t judge me!) of it and I don’t think I ever got past the second stage — but I remember it being fun! So I look forward to seeing more of it.
Remember reading about Hard Battle in Game Pro in ’93 and had no idea what to think about it. Never heard of Ranma 1/2 before then and didn’t really think about it until I went to college and started watching anime. And funnily enough Ranma 1/2 was one of the first shows I got into early on and is still one of my favorite animes.
The year was 2001, I was finally old enough to be allowed into the teen and comic section of the local library. I scanned the title wondering what I would start with when I came across an odd looking comic. It was about the size of an ordinary book, and the art style was different to anything made in the west. I thought it looked interesting so I opened it and began to read.
It wasn’t but a few minutes later that I noticed something odd, the story didn’t make sense, everything was out of order and I grew more and more confused. It wasn’t until I tried to figure out why by looking through it back and forth that I realised, this book was read right to left!
This book titled ‘Ranma volume 1′. My first manga.
My favourite game in the series is ‘treasure of the red cat gang’.
I love Ranma. It’s actually one of the first series that got me into manga like 8 years ago. I wish that RPG was a YCPT >__< That puzzle game looked pretty badass too
Deimos you're not the only one feeling… confused… >_>
Funny. Ranma 1/2 is also one of the animes I watched when I was younger that got me into anime. I’m not even sure I remember how it was that I was first exposed to it, but from that point on, I made a point to seek out and watch the anime series, OAVs and movies and read the manga. Watching this review makes me want to try and find the series again to watch it (or read it if that’s the more economical solution.)
I actually have the 1st ranma game mentioned for my Super Famicom. It kinda does suck, but I got it free when I ordered my Su-Fami. so I can’t complain ^^;. It at least has a adequate multiplayer mode, and if nothing else, it has a very nice soundtrack.
I remember playing Ranma 1/2 Hard Battle, and I even at one time had all 8 seasons of the anime on DVD, but good luck finding it now. Hopefully VIZ will re release the Ranma 1/2 series, but I really recommend the Manga over the Anime, because the ending of the 8 season run is pretty weak.
I also recommend trying to find the Ranma OAV series, and the two Feature length Movies.
Very good stuff as always Jdub, you have really gotten the interaction between JewWario and Yanki J to perfection. The games seems very good as well. Shame that the RPG isn’t a YCPT, maybe possible a Let’s Play? Keep up the good work.
Judging by that title card, a female J-dub would be pretty darn attractive. I guess a Rule 63 of him was inevitable though.
On topic, I love Ranma 1/2, but it’s such a long story I haven’t gone all the way through it for a while. I haven’t played any of the games, but they seem pretty interesting.

I remember playing Ranma 1/2 Hard Battle back in the day. It was no SF2, but it was okay.
I was introduced to Ranma 1/2 in high school when I rented the OVA Desperately Seeking Shampoo from a local video store sometime in the early 1990s. It was almost impossible to find anime back then, so it was incredible to find a video store that actually had a bunch of it in the animation section. It gave me my first real taste of anime with Vampire Hunter D, after all.
I like the look of the puzzle game. Makes me pine for the puzzle game craze of the ’90s. Have you ever played the Capcom arcade puzzle game Pnickies? It’s a rather under-appreciated title, if you ask me. Loads of fun, but it was shoved under a table because of Super Puzzle Fighter (which, of course, is also a great and well-known title).
Looking forward to BTTF. Keep up the good work. :3
I remember playing Ranma 1/2 Hard Battle on the SNES back in the day. It was ok. I also played Street Combat…which as you mentioned was the American version of the first Ranma game that was butchered with swapped sprites. It sucked. I think the third fighting game was planned to be released outside japan but I guess it was canceled.

Sadly, no transformation gameplay mechanic exists in the Ranma fighting games.
I played a fan translation of the Ranma 1/2 RPG, and it was pretty fun. It was short by RPG standards, but funny and well-designed.
Nice Work man, i love that others players besides me are playing import games, i love Ranma is one of the 4 series that got me into anime, (Samurai Pizza Cats, Saint Seiya and Sailor Moon are the others).

I HAVE A QUICK VIDEO ABOUT WHY I LOVE RANMA

I used to really enjoy the third fighting game.

I played the RPG ranma game through a helpful fan translation – unfortunately it was very very buggy and I couldn’t complete it.

This one is done by The Order of A.D.D and is easily the best out there. If its not done by them, then just ignore it.

I assume that there is even more Ranma 1/2 games considering that this seemed to be just first part to two parter.
Oh god. I don’t even need to see the video and I’ve already seen what cannot be unseen.
Rule 63 JDub? ;.;
Check out the rest of Cross’ gallery and you’ll find plenty more rule 63 of Justin and others.

Wait….if Yanki J thought you were “really a girl” shouldn’t he have been hitting you with hot water to get you to change back?
Great vid Justin! Poor Yanki J, he just wants JDub to turn into a woman… I wonder why XD
Why is Yanki J convinced that you are a girl?
YES, HE HAS THE BACK TO THE FUTURE GAME! I wanted to see that review since seeing it on AVGN. Oh and this review was good.
OMG this gives me more ideas for my fanfic stories. Yay!
