`What would you sacrifice to secure the crown of Albion? ` This is the question that players will have to answer as the king or queen of a kingdom in peril in the third installment in the acclaimed franchise.

Seriously Lionhead? This is the DEFINITION of BAD DLC practices!

We all know of Fable 3, the latest sequel to Peter Molyneux’s apparent favorite series. The Fable franchise has been a little rough from the beginning. There’s been overhyping and broken promises, but despite that, you could tell Lionhead and Peter were putting their hearts into the games. However, it is my personal opinion that somewhere between Fable 2 and Fable 3, it seems that Lionhead lost that spirit and just went straight for the money.

Fable 3 had many features that were removed or just plain ol’ dumbed down in order to make it more accessible to casual players. You would think that they might make some concessions to the hardcore RPG players or the core gamer as well, right?

Lex Luthor himself would be proud of these practices!

Lionhead has turned onto the route of the greedy, manipulating their fans and players into shoveling over more money. Why would I say this? Molyneux talked about having microtransactions, which aren’t a bad thing, but the way Lionhead implemented them certainly is. They hands down took content out of the game and sold it later as “DLC”.

A huge obvious example of this is the black dye that comes with the Dye Pack. The black dye was in Fable 2, so you KNOW they could have easily put it in game on Fable 3. They knew it was popular and would have garnered money, as evidenced in the description as “The long-awaited black dye”. Yeah, long-awaited when the game hasn’t even been out for a few hours. BULLSHIT!

You mean I have to pay real money just to color my clothes black?! WHY!

Hours after this pack was put up it was quickly taken down. There should be no reason for this other than what was evident. They were withholding the Day 1 DLC in order to release it at a later date. Understone was released a full MONTH after the game was released, yet it was already finished and available from day ONE! A few people were even able to download and play all of the DLC, weeks before they were officially “released”.

Why would they do this? I’ll tell you why. It was to make it seem like they had been working oh so diligently on the DLC and that it was not cut from the disc. That is just outright manipulation and exploitation. It is my belief that they removed features from the disc in order to sell it to their fans later on in order to make quick, easy money. The Understone pack features Reaver’s Mansion Colosseum and the Mercenary Camp’s shooting range. BOTH of which you can see in the main game and you can even participate in the Reaver Colosseum. It’s just so blatantly obvious, in my humble opinion, that it was cut out of the game!

As an avid fan of Fable I am honestly disappointed with Lionhead. This is how we are repaid for supporting this franchise throughout its inception? Absolutely disgraceful. I mean this is really the lowest you could get when it comes to DLC. BLACK DYE?! To be able to use the color BLACK!?! On customizable CLOTHES?!?! That’s worse than Horse Armor! What possible justification could there be for this? None! This is the shining example of of GOUGING DLC.

We shouldn't have to pay 400MS, or 80MS or ANYTHING for this crap. This doesn't add value!

But this is pretty much a warning to you all, albeit a week late. Be careful with this DLC. I’d say flat out don’t get it, but that’s up to you. Just remember that Fable 3′s DLC is an exploitation of the fans in a large majority of people’s opinion.

*400MS or $5 for Fable 3: Understone

*80MS or $1 for the right to color your clothes black with the black dye.

It’s the latest trend. Hold off on content that would appear by all rights to have been included in the game, and see how many people will buy it. The fact that it’s still happening is disturbing, in and of itself. We might get to see the people who take the time to complain about these things, but there’s certainly multitudes that just gobble it all up in the blanket of “knowledge” that they’re adding on to the games in question.

EA’s even done the same in the new Need for Speed, with having re-skinned cop cars available for racers at the “low” price of $3. I’m not going to buy the pack, myself, but I’m near-certain there’s plenty that have, which makes my lack of purchase negligible. The cars are even right there in my selection screen, but they’re only “Available in the Store,” which to me, translates to “on-disc.”

I do have the question, though, just what is the size of this dye-pack “DLC?” Anything minuscule would lead me to believe it’s an unlock code rather than an actual add-on.

Previous plan: Wait a few months to see how Fable III was holding up in the community then decide on purchase
New plan: Wait until it becomes a Plat hit with the DLC and then buy it for $20. Sorry Lionhead, but I’m your worst nightmare. I’m very patient!

To be honest, I do like Fable 3 more than Fable 2, even if the game is incredibly dumbed down. (Though, a few of my favorite actors didn’t hurt the rating for me.) I do enjoy the combat, simple as it is, and really find the kill moves entertaining.

That being said, I HATE, absolutely HATE people that do this. It just drives me totally mad whenever I’m expected to pay WAY more to get the full experience, AFTER already spending 60+ dollars on the game! I mean, sometimes, I don’t mind. (Bioware, you got lucky when it came to the ME games and DLC.)

But when I loaded up the game for the first time and went into the Shop on launch day, what do I see? Loads of DLC up already. I call bullshit. If you had it finished for that long, PUT IT IN THE GODDAMN GAME! I don’t care if you put it in via a bonus disc on the special editions, or just in the game in general. It shouldn’t have to be downloaded if it’s been done for months.

…That being said, I will still play and support the games that Lionhead makes. But if they keep this shit up, I likely will spend my money elsewhere. (Sorry, Pete, but I’m not gonna blow my cash on a hopeless case.)

PS: the lionhead Studios are not the first to make you pay to colour your avatar.
This kind of transaction is quite popular among MORPG with microtransaction.

They are simply the first to apply that on a Singleplayer game with a bit of Multiplayer.

But mostly DCL are the ring of junction between the singleplayer and the Microtransaction MORPG so again not much surprise.

…Black is a colour not a “features”. What proof do you need?
Normally games need a DCL or an expansion to add the support of the Black colour in the game?

No but they decided to… not let you use this colour unless you pay an additional cost.
And way they have done that?

Because now is common knowledge that in MORPG White and Black are the most used colours by high spender gamer.
For example Guildwars have an in game market for “vial of dye” used to colour armour with price based by offer/request of an item.

      Black: 9.500g
      White: 4.300g
      Red: 250g
      Blue vial: 230g
      Silver: 180g
All other 100g (lowest price possible)

Not need of a Nobel price in economy to notice that many people are willing to spend a lot to colour their armour in White and Black but not in other colours. And the step from gold pieces to few dollars is short… also this is a common knowledge in MORPGS where the real world/in game currency exchange is quite popular.

This just goes to show how bad game developers can be, just like star wars the force unleashed 2. I loved the first game and they hyped me up for the second one but i beat it in 4 hours! plus the repetitive gameplay, and boring enemies. I mean i was literally paying 15 dollars an hour to play that licensed piece of shit! I know that’s going a bit off topic but c’mon 4 hours!!? I mean i was just speech-less when I beat darth vader, i thought it was only half-way through the game! hope that other companies will not steal our money with false advertising and dlc that should be there in the first place!

what is really funny to me is I think that dlc in general is a waste of time and they shouldn’t be able to milk something unless they really have worked hard on it. For example I find that adding 3 muiltiplayer maps to a fps isn’t really worthe money esspecially since we could just make them in the forge map maker to begin with for free. If you add a new story line with new characters and plots and extras! I think its worth the money. don’t screw with my achievements just because you added 3 new maps to a game I am almost over. HALO!!!!

I’m not so disappointed because to “disappoint” someone must have higher hopes than what the reality is.

But we are talking of Lionhead Studios… Black and White and Fable developers!
They are master in disappointing people with inappropriate marketing-driven promotion and lunch.

So as a Fable PC fan I’m already used to this and still waiting Fable 2 for PC anyway…

So let them keep their black dye and remember that if they sell a black dye is only because people are willing to spend money on those things.

i never understood certain DLC in games like a new costume that does nothing but make you look better i mean thats the kind of stuff you would get for completing a game on a hard difficulty dont buy clothes for a fake character but anyway yeah ive been a fable fan since the 1st one and this shit with the black dye is just revolting paying for a colour that was in the last game plus if you already have loads of coours in the game why leave out black? money!!! wow i hate DLC when its not something big because something big is the only thing worth paying for like new levels and missions but clothes or weapons OR BLACK DYE is a stupid thing to pay for in a video game

I expect more of the same of this sort of money sucking DLC. Companies are pumping so much money into mediocre (at best) games, that the $60 price tag isn’t enough to make them cost effective unless they get into 8 digit sales numbers. This instance is particularly vile since it does show pretty clearly that they cut out stuff just so they could sell it off as DLC later.

Anyone with even a passing interest in video games really need to learn to be a more cautious consumer because this sort of behavior by publishers/developers WILL become more common since they can get away with it.

Game companies pull this crap all the time though. Why not point out Resident Evil 5 charging to play multiplayer? And they’ll continue to do it cause they can. And seriously, crying over having to spend a dollar for dye? It’s a dollar. And no one is forcing you to buy it. I was perfectly content with the colors in the game. Fable 3 was an awesome game. As are a lot of games now in days that pull that crap.

Nice…. paying IRL money just to get the right to colour your clothes black… nice…
I have the game and allthough I like it, it still feels like a certain Peter is looking down on us gamers… Fable has always felt like a dumbed down RPG game. Too be honest it doesn´t even feel like an RPG game. It´s really more of an action/adventure game. Allthough you have some leveling, you have no options on the matter whatsoever, and your clothes do NOTHING except change your outward appearence. This in NOT an RPG.

    Great rant though! =)

So, is it a fact, or your opinion? This article has a lot of problems. Half of the time, you’re saying that “THIS IS WHAT LIONHEAD DID!” and then sneaking in a small “in my opinion” to keep it as an editorial.

I respect your opinion, but you might want to look back and rephrase your sentences, and even show some market trends that may point to something conclusive. As of now, this article is more of a rant than an editorial.

If I remember right, Dragon Age had day one DLC so that once you got past the introduction section of the game you’d get to your camp and already there would be a guy there as a messenger who would ask you to do a quest and your options are 1) Pay Us to do the quest, and 2) feck no. It was incredibly intrusive for a game in that genre.

Go to the wardrobe at the end of the game and look at the dye shelf.

There are holes. There are holes in the collection.
There are holes in the game.
Holes to be filled by DLC.

Fable III Review

It’s a revolution baby! While the obvious tag line of Fable 3 regards the narrative structure of the game, the word revolution can be applied to so much more. Fable returns to the Xbox for its third installment, this time with far less promises from Mr. Molynuex. It is well sighted that ol’ Peter vouches for his games the same way as sexually promiscuous teenagers, and the results tend to be just as disappointing when revealed. I went into Fable 3 after finally forcing myself to finish off the last title. The stench of mediocrity emanating from the final encounter of that particular game perhaps lowered my expectations going into the beginnings of the new title. Boy is my face red!

PROSDiverse and open world, Loads to do, Some of the best voice acting in any game
CONSBoring combat, Uncontrollable expression system, iffy inventory system
WTF?!Building a chicken army, while dressed as a chicken

It is no secret that the main story revolves around your rebellious actions against the current king, eventually becoming the monarch yourself. I was immediately concerned that the advertising for the title was giving away far too much information and that the title would be little more than playing out these actions, ending the game in an open world adventure after your rise to power. While the revolutionary part of the game is set in stone (following your destiny and all), the game is so much more than adventure by numbers. Rather than a lengthy tutorial on your path to becoming a hero like the previous titles, Fable 3 thrusts you right into the action. Within 10 minutes of starting the game you are on your way to becoming the hero Gotham, I mean, Albion needs.

The time of wild adventurers is very much dead. Time has passed in Albion and the age of industry has smeared across the landscape forever changing the way the world works. The beautiful vistas and village folk of the original Fable are long passed, replaced with the factories and the working man. The happy joy of the world has been swapped out for a much more dower vision of a fantasy setting. The initial introduction is surprisingly charming and sets the tone for the adventure perfectly. Thankfully, your father was the hero that saved Albion in the previous title (with no mention of the optional female hero) meaning you carry the powers of a hero. Unfortunately, your brother is the king and it will be a battle between blood that will see the rise or fall of the land.

The guy in the middle is voiced by Simon Pegg, the other two are not worthy

The tale of Fable 3 is presented wonderfully, not only in visual design and level concept, but through the all-star cast of voice actors that bring the world to life. If like me you happen to be English, your heart will swell with pride upon hearing the work of the immediately familiar voices of Stephen Fry reprising his role as Reaver, Simon Pegg as the solider Ben Finn, John Cleese as your butler and the lose mouthed Jonathan Ross. Everyone one of these characters is unforgettable in their own way, which only serves to attach you to the latest title from Lion Head Studios. Of course Zoe Wanamaker reprises her role as Theresa, once again guiding your hero, but perhaps not telling the whole truth.

Of course the title wouldn’t be a Fable game if there was no element of choice in the story. While once again you are bound to fate and have no choice in the direction of your characters adventure, you can decide how to react. One of my major gripes with the older titles was the black and white way the designers laid out your choices. Either your hero was good, bad or schizophrenic. Never did a choice come down to anything less than ‘do you wish to be a douche?’ Fable 3 strays from this stringent formula with every decision you make. Due to your standing in the world, your answers have an immediate effect and a longer lasting ramification. Upon becoming King you are set a task that requires a humongous amount of money to complete, however certain people are in desperate need for money and you made several promises on your rise to power. I found myself picking the good option and fulfilling my promises to the people of the land, but found after my first day on the throne the treasury was over a million gold in debt. I won’t ruin the joy of finding out what the task is, however do understand that being a million in debt could threaten everything I fought to create.

8/10

Man, I love these games, though Fable 1 was really short, the shortest of all the games, 2 was bit longer but the story was meh, but 3 has really taken 1 and 2 further imo. . 1 was way too short and what ruined it for me was the massive hype, because after the game was released and looking for help and things online, I was disappointed about the amount of stuff that was promised but then cut. 2 was better, but the story was really lacking for me.

I think 3 so far is the best. The quests are pretty amazing and fun, I found myself LOLing at many parts in the game, there is a lot of humor in the quests as well as many parts that are just fucking creepy, and yet still funny. One being the puzzle at Sunset House.

Many people complain about the story being shorts. I guess if you rush through it and never complete the non-linear quests or the dozens of non-quest puzzles, then yeah you’re cutting out a lot. But man, there are sure is a lot of doom gloom and creepiness in the game so far. I am about 25 hrs in, and am working on my kingdom.

Only complaints so far is combat seems a little lackluster, game gets laggy at times, which more of the non-quest puzzles were added to the story… the looking for keys, those gnomes and later on flowers get kind of annoying, but this game has been enjoyable so far and I am not even done..

One of the wort parts of this game has to be the interactions with the people. The fact that you can’t pick what expression you do sucks, but whats worse is just the way the people work. To become friends, you have to build up relationship with them THEN you must go off and do a chore for them. What the hell?! What kind of friend is that? In any event, they just seemed so boring and like robots.

I thought Fable 2 sucked personally, but this game just gave me a good time all the way through, even if it was too easy and too short. The magic kicked ass, your character was so over the top with how he/she did emotions that it was awesome, no matter how gender bending it was. I did also like property renting system, really felt like a good investment, especially near the end. I didn’t like the decisions though, as they were always too good or too evil, but hey, I guess I was holding it up to ME2′s standards, still, wish there was someway to be slightly neutral yet still good. Overall, this game was hilarious, definitely worth getting my older brother for his birthday.

I found the game good in the sense of It was fun, but the (And spoilers are comming, so you have been warned)

Once you hit the “Timer point” after you become ruler, it more or less tells you to be a prick or your screwed, then it preety much pulled a Digimon at the end (By that i mean, making you believe this guy, AKA, your brother, is the big bad, then after you “win” you find out the randon demon spawn you found in the caves that looks like somthing out of Starcraft or somthing is the big bad, and you got to beat him) it just makes you feel cheated in my eyes, but besides the ending, i found it to be a good game. 7/10 if i had to rate it.

I agree as well, a very good review. I’ve owned the game since release day and my quibbles are pretty much the same.

I do have one correction though; there is mention of the female hero from Fable II. In my play through my character’s hero parent is referred to as my mother and the Queen. I have yet to find out if this is because I’m playing AS a female hero or if Xbox recognizes my profile’s info from Fable II (wherein I played as a female). It’ll be easy enough to find out however, when I begin a new game as a male hero.

Thanks for the review, I own Fable 3 and i think that your review captures my feelings towards it. Great voice talent, a very good story, and yes combat it’s kinda bland, and the fact that you can’t control the expresions gets a little bit old, and boring (there’s so much dancing with blokes that i can enjoy), but besides that it’s a solid game. Keep up the good work mates.

You know, the moral dilemma of what promises you keep becomes moot if you’re a shrewd enough investor and buy up every house early in the game. By the time I was done, I had 10,000,000 more coins than I knew what to do with. And there’s only so much you can waste just buying up every single item in game.

Thank you for the review, it did flush out several details that I’ve heard mentioned in passing by other reviewers. In truth I can’t say this convinced me to buy the game or otherwise essentially because I’m going to be getting this shortly after it comes out for the PC anyways, only waiting a little longer to ensure that the pc version isn’t a poor port. Hopefully by that time the directional system is fixed as well as any other bugs that may be present.

All in all thanks for writing this up and devoting your time to the game in order to give us this nicely detailed review. :D

Really because I played this game and watched my roomates play through to the ending. Although I do have to give the game props for good voice acting and actually funny jokes, I find its the plot that takes an even more derivitive turn then the last game. There are NO surprises in this game, the opening to this game feels more like a bad comic with it’s “Let’s Do Something!” narrative from nearly every character. I understand it’s trying to show that a revolution is necessary but there are more suble ways to do this.

What follows the opening is quite simply a stream of fetch questing and combat until you become monarch, where you simply make a stream of choices as monarch, all of which are also derivitve and almost feel tacked onto the entire experience (somehow).

Really good review. I think you expressed it prefectly – though it has problems and frustrating moments, they are far outweighted by all good the game has got to offer. I was looking forward to the game nearly all year, so when it came out I decided to pay extra for a Collecter’s Edition, and am so glad I did.
I am looking forward to any add-ons or dlc they come out with! (If there is going to be any, that is)
