J-Dub wakes up with a game beside him and a watch that won’t come off of his arm. What should he do? Review the game and hope for the best.

Just finished playing through 999 to my first ending…I died! I was honestly not expecting to die in my first go around…
I am kinda depressed now since I not only failed to keep Junpei alive but also two other characters as well! I think it’ll take me a good two days before I have the courage to try again…
Urgh.. I think I hate you.. This Game sounds so awesome and I am so glad that Visual Novels finally are starting to get out of Japan..
But I think the changes that this one is going to End up in Europe are still slim..
Well, I hope I am wrong!
Till than, I have to look longingly to Amazon there a nice Seller sells it from US for 47€ v.v

Visual Novels are awesome. And i’m going to have to say most visual novels don’t have any graphics movement at all from what i’ve seen of this game it has a lot more movement that the VN’s i play. Generally VN’s have just mouth movement to no movement what-so-ever and even if there is movement it’s usually not animated just kinda fade into each other.
The game is slowly becoming a cult hit. It’s already obscure enough with a limited print run, is already over 80 bucks on the used market, and is getting rave reviews through word of mouth like Deadly Premonition and Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper did this year.
Gotta love the little guys getting their fifteen minutes.
Got this suggested to me by a friend recently and playing through it now – It is very good – I like the visual novel concept – but I have only played one or two of them. (This and Umineko no nako koro ni.)
Also Umineko could be a “YCPT” since it is a PC Game unlikely to get a us release (higurashi the creator’s previous game series has been released via Manga Gamer.) but a Translation exists for it. (Which the author has contacted them saying thank them for. (http://witch-hunt.com)) There are 8 Episodes of it – 7 of which are out (and as of 11 days ago translated.) and the 8th being released at comiket in a few days time.
Another game similar to this is Lux Pain from Atlus. It is a game that didn’t have that many copies and I got bad endings left and right just from going to the wrong place or spending too much time talking to 1 person
i’ve played a couple of this novel games and I love them, my favorite is Hotel Dusk.
I really wanna play this game now but my DS died
Nice! I didn’t know there was such a genre. I’ve got to check this out. Sounds like it’s really well executed. Also, books. Mmmmm.
Looks like a fun title , I will have to check it out because this game is kinda rare over seas. Have you heard of Hotel Dusk : Room 215 ? I have yet to beat it but it is very fun and is very much a visual novel/detective game. Its getting a sequel soon in Japan after many years and was a fun DS title back in early 2007.Check it out.
Actually there already IS a sequel available – to us europeans at least: “Last Window: The Secret of Cape West” with its european release date of September 17th 2010. (The japanese have it since 2007 so you may be referring to it).
Unfortunately the game has not yet been announced to come to the US.
sweat! well onword to Amazon to….find out the only copys I can get from them are $119. Great.
Oh yeah, I definitely know what I’m getting with my Christmas money now. Thanks for letting me know about this game, Justin.
Its great to see visual novel outside Japan. Now if only this was beginning of even more visual novels being published in Europe and US.
This is far from the beginning. Ever hear of something called “Ace Attorney”?
But in all fairness…this is an awesome game. In fact, I’d give it a higher score than this. I know that it’s Blistered Thumbs, and higher numbers are supposed to mean a lot more, but it really DOES deserve a 9/10. It’s fricking amazing.
Another great review, as always XDD
The ending… SUSPENSEFUL!
How sturdy is the watch? I was thinking about gettting it with the game on the Aksys site.
I can’t find the watch anywhere. I want it so bad…
Great review, I hope more games like this begin to come to the states. This feel a lot more exciting when games become more like books. This way they give you a clear mindset of what you are reading, not to mention the use of puzzles that put you right in action.
I love visual novels, its such a great genre a shame that they rarely get translated. usually you have to rely on fan translations. thank you for showing me this title its definitly on my list now.
Huh. Never heard of that game or even of that genre before. Who knows if this will get more good feedback from the western countries. Who know, who knows… well, if ‘Who’ knows, then I really wanna meet him!
I think in most cases, people just don’t think of visual novels as games since they are like reading a book and not very interactive, so people will only want them if they are intrested in the story , or,as in the Ace Attorney series, the writing is funny.
Speaking of visual novels I’d really like to learn more about
“Metatei Conan & Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbou: Meguri au Futari no Meitantei” for DS
and the other DS Detective Conan games, but from what I’ve heard they’re all visual novel games, so… I CAN’T play this! can I?
The main problem with visual novels commonly is that people think of them as being “japanese” – and not necessarily in a “they come from that social background” kind of way.
But then “Hotel Dusk: Room 915″ and “Last Window: The Secret of Cape West” (the latter was never released in the US but in Europe as of today) are, even though their art strays from the “norm”, visual novels.

Just an interesting point, I’d say ‘they were testing the waters’ with Disgaea Infinite, a visual novel that came out June of this year. A little bit of an easier sell, as it’s part of an established franchise, but it did come out first.
I would have to say the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney ( Gyakuten Saiban) series came first. It’s been out in the US since October 2005 and is a personal favourite of mine.
