In Sonic Free Riders, full-motion body control allows you to twist and turn your way through a range of courses in an action-packed Sonic experience.
Kinect's unique motion sensor means Sonic Free Riders will see family and friends controlling their fully customisable hover board or bike by twisting, turning and jumping in an exhilarating race to be the first to cross the finish line.
I actually love this game. One of my top 10. It is hard at first but does work when you know what to do. It doesn’t make a broken streak of good games for the franchise in my opinion, unlike the latest crash and spyro games.
funny thing was, at 0:40 I was getting up of my chair to adjust my sound. it was so weir like joe almost saw me. lol
utter shit, 1/10 is still to generous for this crap !!! god i hope Sega pulls back in line again
You know, Sonic Free Riders is kind of like the hoverboard for back to the fut- *Sound of door being broken down* Oh shit….*Sound of AK-47 being shot*
Did they even TEST the game before they released it? or was that too much work?
wow thats just terrible, it reminds me of my own worst nauseating game as a teen, Timesplitters 2 on Ps2. That game was fun but after playing for about an hour everyone playing or watching felt sick to the stomach.
What the hell happened to Sonic? I mean stick with what we always remember Sonic; getting coins and destroying Dr. Eggman. There was also Shadow the Hedgehog on the Nintendo Gamecube. Kinda the same thing but u can control Shadow’s past, present, and future.
I don’t know if anyone had asked but I was wondering if Joe was really sick from playing the game?
I ask because I think he was but my husband thinks he wasn’t.
It’s almost like torture to see how low Sonic has sunken…!
LOL Cnet.com just rated this game 1 out of 10 Worst game this year.
http://reviews.cnet.com/2300-9995_7-10005859-10.html?s=0&o=10005859&tag=mncol;page
also Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, and Iron Man 2
this game is a sh*t, and I fu**ing bought it !
just to play with my girlfriend, couse sonic games is so colorfull and simple. and the way they realize 2 players gameplay seems to me very romantic. but it’s a crap, all day was like talking about how bad this game is….
they just gave me money back.
Im sorry, but I hade to make a user, just to say this: What a load of crap!! Seriously, if you hade taken two minutes learning the game, instead of get mad after one second. I have the game, and it took me trough the toturial and after that it worked perfectly. This is one of my favorite game om kinect. The only lame thing is the story, dont care much about that. Check this out if you are wondering: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pc2h2CKAxEI&feature=related.
wow… just wow.
nobody said no to joe xD dang poor sonic he is been going down since sonic heros but this is awful sega just screw evrything about this game is sad this could be a decent game from the kinect my final scoore -1 >:(
This continues to be one of my favorite reviews of yours for reasons I don’t understand.
Also, thanks for being uncorruptible… (I guess no one has had the chance to corrupt you, but if they do stay awesome and we’ll stay your fans.)
I feel like there were some seriously rose-tinted glasses being passed around to the other reviewers… or maybe just money. 7? Honestly.
A lot of places need to redo their rating system. They have ratings for games that are literally unplayable because of a systems glitch. Gaming has evolved. I feel like we need ratings based on how good the games are, not whether they are playable.
It’s rare to see anyone rating a game 5/10 anymore. It’s normally 7/10 and up for any game I see nowadays. -shakes head-
It’s why you’re a good reviewer, so keep it up.
I hate how They are whoring Sonic out like this…Play Sonic 4 instead.
Anyway, this was an amusing video Joe! Keep up the good work and thanks for the warning.
Poor Joe for having to go through that game. Thanks for the warning!
…Really, is this some sort of bot? it has posted nothing but ‘arg’ on every single article.
game making 101: rule#1 dont rush it
dude I feel for you man. I hate when stuff like that goes down hill. I remember playing sonic riders for like the cube or something and it was ok but only something that I would have played in between games. maybe it was for something else I can;t remember. but watching your reveiw was funny as hell
Biggest disappointing game for the kinect
Terrible Game
we’ll sonic ever be in good games now a days
lmao! the first game joe gave a 1/10, its a good thing you informed us of this horribile title for the kinect, awsome review
horrible
I love this review so much. Wow, this game is really, really bad, wouldn’t expect it to be THIS bad.
i cant believed they put up a sonic free riders demo today??? did they not watch angry joes review of the game!!!???
I thought the theme song sounded pretty decent… just loud.
Can’t speak for the rest of the game, though…
Dude sonic games are quite pathetic
I have never played a single sonic game as i have not once been connected to the gaming industry hell, I am oblivious to anything related to it anyway
but from my understanding and from what ive seen the classics are great, and it’s funny cause it would be easier for me to get into sonic by playing the highest latest games
but that is quite from the opposite, sonic free riders has crushed my hopes for sega to get there head out of there asses and pay attention, seriously what the fuck do they do at that company to drop the ball so big
In terms with the menu, I think left and right were reversed.
GameInformer gave it like a 4 out of 10. I felt they were giving the game too much credit as today I subjected myself to the game at the request of a friend. I feel your pain Joe.
ign gave this a 7.5 i think and said it had good sensitivity.
Maybe they threatened to fire anyone who scored below 7. Wouldn’t surprise anyone.
Probably the most epic return of a game ever! I had high hopes for Free Riders as well, thinking it was gonna be awesome, but now it makes me wanna try Ride instead. Blegh. Keep up the awesome work Joe!
What a mess of a game.
Bad music and a way too steep learning curve, why Sega why???
Can’t they just give Sonic a break for a year or two now?
They have been making games of him almost non stop now lately.
We have to be honest, people. Sega is getting a little better with Sonic 4.
This review is probably one of my favorites just because I think we’ve all played a game we absolutely hated as much as you hate this game! You’d think a Sonic racing game would be good! Or at least entertaining!
I never expected the game to be this unresponsive and hated. But to get a 1/10 from Angry Joe…
I love how a picture of Angry Joe is one of the first images when you Google “Sonic Free Riders.” He’s even mentioned in the wikipedia article under Reception.
I don’t play new sonic games anymore, they only lead to more hurt
Damn, Joe, you’re not holding anything back.
Lol I love how everyone knows the result but listens to his funny rants anyway
Returning the game as broken….respect Joe, respect.
I wish I was awesome enough to get a refund despite store policy.
Hahahah love you Joe!
Say it how it is ^__^
This might be the 2nd worst 3d Sonic Game next to Sonic 06, the worst 3d sonic game by far!
Damn
SEGA fucked up
they need to get their head out of their asses and do better for crying out loud
>:(
i might actuallly make a review to compare to the hoverboard from back to the future just to see joe in person while hes kicking my ASS!
Wow I never see this angry before
Well Joe tell us how you really feel LOL great angry Review
wow. Another fail for Sonic
You said it dude. An EPIC fail. Too bad for Sonic.
God that sonic free riders theme tune has been stuck in my head for days
It’s Broken broooooooooooooken
No one says no to joe no one
funny, this game works FINE.
ether I have the magic copy or joe doesn’t know how to set up Kinect!
that throw up mechanic idea…. good idea.
This is the review that you won me over with, Joe. I didn’t really pay much attention to you or the rest of Blistered Thumbs but this was hilarious as all get out and now I’m checking out what this place has to offer. Excellent review, man!
Song…stuck…in…head….
What gets me is Sega knows this concept hasnt worked, so them who they arem they try to go back to it and try it again -_- WTF Sega? i am expecting something out of Colors and i get this crap first -_-
Colours got a higher score than black ops
Oh Sonic. How the mighty have fallen.
Honestly, I didn’t really have high hopes for Sonic Free Riders. I liked the first one, because it was a nice break away from the norm for Sonic (at least it was the first time they did a racing game since I think Sonic R or the 2-player racing battle in Sonic Adventure 2), but when I heard this one, I had a sense of dread (especially when I heard it was Kinect-only controls, instead of like the upcoming Harry Potter game is, controller but with the option for Kinect). Joe’s review didn’t help alleviate said sense, either. And at least the game got what it deserved (to me at least) from Joe.
That’s hilarious, i sadly bought this game. So did my friend…..we traded in my copy AND BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF HIS. He threw it out a 3 story window and into the highway.
Oh dear god sonic, how you have been abused for so many years. This is alot like watching an interactive version of sonic adventures (or whatever the reeeeaaaaly bad cartoon was called, think I’m blocking it out a bit).
love this review really funny joe keep it up
Love the review, laughed my ass off man.
Joe, I hate to rend an old wound open again, but you were missing a key part of the voice commands, which is right inside the manual.
You have to say ‘select’ after saying a character or item name to select it. Otherwise, like you were doing in the video, nothing happens.
That aside, I’m going to try this game once I have my own Kinect. I’m willing to give it a shot.
Oh hey look!, some guy who argues a minimum detail between the word Rant and Review.
Now for the real question, who cares really, do you just know how much time and dedication does it take to make a video like this in general? free time that you get after your done at work or daily life activities is just not easy to take that time to play a game (and worse even a bad one) and make a video about it.
Either just one of those sophisticated trolls or just a sonic fanboy, you people don’t appreciate what other people do for your own entrainment.
So you’re argument is that they work so hard that they can’t improve?
Very Funny and Entertaining review Angry Joe Show. Don’t care for the game or Kinect tho. Just want to say This is an Amazing site and Keep up all the Good Work!
Thanks!
I don;t like playing sonic in 3D. I still remember the dizziness, nausia, & sore fingers of Sonic 3D Blast & dying in the first 5 seconds of Sonic Adventure 3 times in a row.
What next, Kinect Battle Toads?
Sonic Riders: The opposite of Red Dead Redemption.
Joe, this review was all kinds of fantastic.
I applaud you for returning the game as well! I hope if they gave you shit for trying to return it you just repeated your rant at them xD
It’s always been my dream to fight Joe on the side of the street!
*Ahem* You know, playing Sonic Free Riders is just like riding the hoverboard from back to the Futu- *dies*
…Joe kils fast…
XD
Awesome review man.
It’s a shame you had to go through that torture though.
Nice! Now comments go from bottom to top. I like it better.
There are many points that I can give out to why Joe hates this game. I don’t want to outright defend the game or bash it since I never played it but there’s just some things that need to be pointed out.
Joe could get sick by using this kinect game. Even if they tested 100 people Joe could have been that 101 person who would get sick after leaning back and forth.
The problem here is the kinect. Like the Wii Remove its having problems working the way that the programmers wanted it to. Since the kinect looks for a human subject there are so many angels and heights and distance to worry about. Which I’m sure Joe even moved his sofa once to try and get this game to work.
I have only seen one race in first player and it works. But the idea of two player, being that close does outright fail. You will bump into each other and You might not have that kind of room.
I’m getting outright sick of these moving games. Unless its a arcade shooter I want to just sit back, relax, put up the controller, and press B to jump. If I jump in my grandmothers priceless bear glass statue room where my PS3 is located, ya its gonna be a big mess. Theirs no way a game company can cover every room because I’m sure some have their system and TV locked in closets.
So overall, its still a fun review not a info review. We didn’t hear exactly what he did, how he did it, and a real answer for how close two people needed to be. Overall I would most likely not buy it because of my size, and that I couldn’t even get the controller games of Riders to work. So the review just shows me that the kinect is no way perfected to its game programmers to handle.
Dear god, I could write “Cool story bro” SO MANY TIMES HERE. Look, the game sucks, he didn’t like it, no one does. Stop trying to convince yourself you like it so you don’t feel like Sega stole from you.
Nice review Joe, it’s good to see a video that’s like your older stuff… once in a blue moon.
Dude, you misunderstood me: I’m not really a Sonic fan, just as I’m not quite a fan of Famitsu’s rating system.
And the most recent Famitsu Issue gave this game a …. tadaam … 8/10
Sonic Free Riders (360) – 8/8/8/8
Funniest (and most helpful) review i have ever seen hahaha.. although you kinda did it to yourself man, who would buy a sonic game in this day and age? hahah
Bravo! now your kicking ass angry joe, that was a great review.
i like sonic games (the old school ones, adventure and advance ones) but wasent easy to see sonic free riders was going to sucks. one good thing about sega is that is always trying new things as they did with the wii controller so if sega cant make the kinect works the right way i doubt many third-party developers can make it works.
I feel your pain Joe, trust me. This game is worse then Sonic Riders for PS2 and Pumpkinhead’s Revenge I die a little inside everytime I say I have those games, but really this game was so bad that my buddy took me to a birthday party for a girl who liked me and had me play her new birthday present with her and I knew it was bad, but not that bad. Joe this game got me laid, and playing this abomination wasn’t worth it. Now when ever I see her (or this peice of Shit) I feel dirty, very dirty.
Games bad.
Mythmaker quit trollin you said yourself you’ve never even played it.
Look kid, I’m sure you’re a very smart fourth-grader, but this is grown-up talk. Calling kids “meanies” is for the playground.
The review fits the game. I remember a guy once loaned me sonic tennis telling me that it was suprisingly good. I got punked
Well joe i love ya(in a brotherly way) and im gunna let you finish but You kindof deserve it for saying you expect better from sonic. Have you played any of his games ever since he went 3d?
Gametrailers described the game intro as: “A delightful little opening” O.O zOMG
It is too bad that the following is true for your videos
More Angry = more popular
All of your videos are entertaining. I like that this site provides the opportunity for more than one reviewer to review a game. Which allows the audience to see either a different viewpoint or an more in dept look into a product. Other gaming review sites tend to have reviewers that mimic each other which tends to be boring.
You should watch The Room to make food taste better and colors seem brighter.
Hehehe…that’s really funny Mark…The room is a must see…Huhhhhh?
P.S Tommy Wiseau’s new film features vampires…O.O
Haha Joe did you just censor “GOD”?
Well, at least Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is pretty good. Mario Kart Wii is better, but if you don’t have a Wii, you’d be hard pressed to find a better mascot themed cart racer.
Angry Joe, I’m a fan of yours, but lately, you just seem to be reviewing shitty games. And meanwhile, youre missing on some great titles! You could have been reviewing Mafia 2 instead of Kane And Lynch 2, Fallout: New Vegas instead of Medal Of Honor! And I’m not going to bash Kinect, but if you can’t recommend it to people, I would review other games. And you don’t look like your having much fun either.
Hoping it gets better-Jman2113
I have to say i agree with this review.I played this at a friend’s house and it was terrible.
First of all. He he he he he! I think this review was hilarious, but also educate, knowing that I will stay away from this game. Being a Sonic fan, it’s most obvious he’s been riding on one of them unstable roller-coasters. I must be fair, I liked the older title that was released on the 360. Unleashed was it.
Yet when I first saw the announcement of Sonic Free Riders, I just asked my self. What the hell are they thinking anyway. I mean the previous Riders game, haven’t really received anything positive whatsoever. And I have the first one, on my old Xbox. So I know all about this, why this game would “fail”. Lemme rewrite that. Fail, as in what was they thinking about taking this awful idea back to the Sonic series. I had almost believed there was slowly bringing the Sega’s icon back to his old shoes.
Not with this, they ain’t.
Thanks for the review Joe.
Even if that theme song have been constantly in my head this morning. Anyway looking forwards to more of your crazy reviews, and let’s hope that you will never have to play something so terrible like Free Riders again.
Good lord…what a train wreck of a game!
And people at Sega still believe Sonic can be salvaged?
OXM gave this 75 out of 100.. yeah…
Now everyone knows what to get you for Christmas.
Seriously though, I’ve heard that some reviewers and other people have actually got it to work correctly. Others have have the same problems as you had.
Now people are going to show you this game (or even a picture of it) just to get a rise out of you.
I honestly feel that this game would have been an excellent game (yes keep reading I’m not trolling) had it strictly been for the Wii, using the Wii balance board. At least that is responsive and accurate, and maybe if the game wasn’t so stupidly fast (which is ironic for a Sonic game) then maybe it’d be a 7/10 or more. As for the Kinect, I haven’t seen much positive light yet…
About this Mythmaker guy: I think we might be a bit spoiled, as I don’t think that their criticism in any way deserves the insulting backlash it got; although I don’t agree with some of their criticisms, dude felt as though they weren’t getting enough from Angry Joe’s review and he gave clear reasons why (he thought it was short and loud, to simplify) and continued to defend themself in a reasonable manner throughout the backlash. We’re so used to it now that we take it for granted, but let me remind you guys what bad/trolling criticisms usually look like: “@MKfan888 are you tarded” (igotteabaggedtoday)
Just giving people a bit of perspective…
Angry Joe is Angry! XD
I have to agree with Joe, the opening theme to this is stupider than the original “Sonic Riders” opening theme.
I would return the game to if i was a piece of shit like this!
I’ve returned games at a Gamestop before. I think they have something like a next day return policy and I got store credit. Which is just as good at a Gamestop anyway.
Another game that got a score it deserved when others are not even giving them below average scores is rediculous.
Huh, can’t tell what is worse, Shadow or this, prolly this cause at least some parts of Shadow are playable, just playable doesn’t equal fun. Judging from the commets made about IGN, guess the arguement about selling out is becoming more apparent. Aj please continue to keep me cautious about my purchases.
Joe, I want you to know that because of this review I have decided to donate 5 bucks. I LOVE the honest reviews. Please keep these coming.
Also wanted to point out that if everyone who has posted thus far donates just 5 bucks to Joe, that would be 5*270 = $1350 so we can keep this awesomeness coming.
Thanks again A. Joe!!!!!!!!!
Are you sure that weren’t just too close for the camera to track you? I know that for most Kinect games I have to be a lot further back than you were.
I’m glad that your review was honest and completely about the game itself, not descending into Sonic-bashing like many of the comments. The previous Sonic Riders games on the PS2 were great games that got bad reviews because the idiot reviewers were expecting a simplified arcade racer and found the game to be too complex. I expected reviews of this game to be much of the same. But it turns out you were right on in your review. I knew there was something wrong going on when the mainstream game reviewers were giving a Sonic game a good review. Awesome that we can depend on you for the truth.
I think it’s safe to say that Joe has officially died a little on the inside by playing this game
So, this is totally not me being a dick, but wouldn’t the worst score you could give be a 0 out of 10?
Anyway, your antics amuse me.
I don’t think even if I did purchase a Kinect, I would even touch this game. May this game burn in the imaginary fires of hell.
@ ggbhtg: His “Bat Credit Card” is right. I could see the AngryJoe Army marching out against this one.
If I’m honest, I’m glad you started with this one, Joe; hopefully that’s the shit weeded out of your fancy new peripheral, at least until more titles are released for it, huh? Hopefully the other Kinect games you have are things you can really have fun with. While the Kinect doesn’t look like something for me, your review of the hardware itself told me that this was something you’d really be enjoying. The Kinect, that is. I just hope for you there’s some gems in this little bag.
I make it a rule of thumb never to touch games like this– though I will admit that Mario Kart is fun, and probably 200 times better than this… thing.
Fight the good fight, Joe! We’re all backin’ ya, out there! *salutes*
This review really puts the angry in ‘Angry Joe’, considering he’s normally quite reasonable
Oh my god……the first Riders was tolerable, and the 2nd….who cares, but this? I’m…..actually not surprised. I mean this is a launch title. I knew they couldn’t get the motion control right on their first try, so I’m not shocked to see this go the way of Tony Hawk Ride of whatever they shitty skateboard peripheral game was. I think we may have found Joe’s “Bat Credit Card”.
I thought the first was OK too. It was wonky and the courses were convoluted and frustrated in many places, but it was only mediocre. But this? I’m definitely not going to try this at all. Even if I even owned a Kinetic. Or an XBox.
“Hey, it’s Sonic, right? That’s like Sega’s head dude! Obviously they’re gonna work hard on it!”
Looks like somebody is new to the Sonic franchise.
Over the last few years, though there have been a few gems in series that show some good effort made with the production (and BTW, effort =/= quality of game, as there are a few bad ones that at least show effort, and vice versa), the amount of effort put into Sonic games usually ranges from just above “passable” to “we rushed a broken and incomplete game to the shelves”.
Real sad story with what happened with this game, especially since just about all the other Sonic games released this year seem to have had quite a bit more effort put into them than Sonic games of the last few years.
If you see this Joe, I hope Free Riders didn’t turn you off to reviewing the series entirely, because I’d be interested to see what you think of some of the other Sonic games from this year.
Im getting a Kinect after new year and was going to buy this game as well. Guess all I can say is thanks for saving me the, time, effort, money and of course the unrepairable physical and psychological damage to my body and mind Joe. Cheers.
wow Joe got his money back? from gamestop? wow
Thank god that Angry Joe is there, no seriusly i was actually just about to head to the store to buy this thing when the review got uploaded.
Just when people were getting hopeful that Sega learned their lesson… they tug on Sonic’s teats again.
I can’t help but imagine, every time they announce a new Sonic title, the once-proud blue speed demon now in his, like, 40′s, an overgrown, chubby, washed-up sell-out who is forced to star in crap so he can pay rent. He’s the fat creature sitting on his couch sipping cheap beer and eating Mickey D’s as tomato sauce drips down his wifebeater as he remembers the good old days when kids thought he was as cool as Mario.
And you know Sega is just sitting at their desk cackling and counting the money they’re minting at no cost or quality.
I feel for you man. With great, err… fame comes great pain. Your life will never be the same because Sonic has raped your soul.
Wow, this review really put the angry back in Angry Joe!
Another great review Joe, and good on you for going back and demanding your money back. All consumers should have that right to get the money they paid back if they purchase an unacceptable product. Wish I had your titanium plated balls to go and fight to get my money back when I buy crappy games and other bad products.
“I will FIGHT you in the STREET!!” Best angry Joe quote ever… I want that on a t-shirt.
OMFG this review was great (can’t say that about the game wich looked horrible) . Man i also loved how u returned it and got another game for it aswell. I tried to do that with “spore” (you know ,the awfull sim game from maxis) and never got my money back or anything. actually made an account now just to reply to this awesome review.
i salute u joe O7 , you soldier in the war against bad games
I suspect that many people who refuse to see this game for what it is (broken) just see Sonic and break down in their little fanboy/fangirl fits of blind squealing worship. It’s okay to like the characters but hate the game at the same time, y’ know!
It’s not surprising about GameStop. They have by far the best service there.
A bad Sonic game, what are the odds?
… I’d say 1 in 1.
Damn it Joe, I was eating dinner while I watched this XD Its a shame about the soundtrack though, usually the music is the one good thing about the crappier games (save for The Dark Brotherhood on the DS anyway, imo).
This game has just gone down hill since its announcement. At first I was interested in a new one, then we found out its a 360 exclusive. Well that leaves me out, I don’t have the system
Then they announced it was for Kinect… the fans were not happy, though some clung to the hope that it might support a controller… and then their hopes were shattered when it was announced that, no, it was a Kinect exclusive XD I wonder what would have happened if you could use the controller…
Poor Sonic, the franchise just seems to be Sega’s whore, not its mascot
Now, tell us what you really think, Joe.
If I didn’t know any better, I think you don’t like this game.
You do realize if you hate the game so much, you could just not play it or just not flame about it? Seems like a much better way to handle things instead of shouting about it like a spoiled child with nothing better to do than rant about a video game.
Man…it’s the gimmick of the show…if he don’t like the game he will recomend with rants and screams…to SATY THE FUCK AWAY FROM THE GAME…if you don’t like, don’t watch the video…why bother to watch the video if you don’t like the whole gimmick of the show?
sorry…STAY*
This is what he does. If he only reviewed good games, there wouldn’t be much for him to make vids about, would there? No, he takes this on in a professional manner in the way he sticks through every game that comes up for review, trying everything and then giving it to us straight along with some good entertainment. I can’t think of anything about his show I would want to change.
Also, this is called the ANGRY Joe show. If you can read, you knew what his theme is. If you don’t want to listen to unbiased opinions, avoid certain key words like angry, suck, terrible, fail, etc etc…. They are all dead giveaways.
Or, he can tell us how awful a game is for our own edumatainment and you can just not watch. Right?
As much as this game sucks, your review put the “angry” back into “Angry Joe.” Been missing that side of you as of late with all the good stuff you’ve seen and reviewed.
Austrian Death Machine on the car…. That`s epic!!
oh… poor Joe, maybe you’ll enjoy kinectimals.. At least it looks adorably fun ^^
This is why Blistered Thumbs is going to make it huge. They have honest reviews without all the corporate BS. Besides that, the reviews are fun and something I look forward to watching not only for the review but for the entertainment.
One of the currently most respected review websites, IGN, gave this game a 7.5!!! Therefore, I declare today on this post that I am DONE with IGN. No more checking their reviews and looking at ratings. It’s over! That can go for Gamespot too. Blistered Thumbs is the way to go (and please never ever lose that!).
I hope that all of you can join me in this. I’m planning to write them a detailed letter when I collect all my thoughts, telling them about how far off and dishonest they are in their reviews. Also, I will include that I and hopefully we are not going to support them anymore in advertising for corporate cash ins.
Hey Joe, big fan of the show. But I’ve found that the controls when turning, dashing, navigating the menus, seem to work fine on my end and have heard nothing but bad things from most reviewers. It leaves me a little confused about what problems I’m not having.. although I did notice when a second player enters the room (even when not playing) everything goes haywire. My question is, did you have anyone else in the room while playing? If so, did you stand far back enough that the kinect tuner shows your whole body on screen? Now I know even if these do solve any problems that is still horrid in terms of game design, but I feel that my experiance was almost the complete opposite of yours and was wondering if it could be fixed..
Either way keep up the good work, been loving the show lately and I’m always looking forward to your next video =).
Sega is the game making troll.
By now they fucking know they suck.
Their just mad at people for not liking teh dreamcast.
Now that their just a developer and making games for Nintendo curiously enough, youd think itd be obvious that thir trolling the gaming community
Since when has the Sonic Riders series had a GOOD game?
They have all sucked.
Holy crap, man. Glad you got your money back. A game that makes you nauseous- yeah, there’s something seriously wrong there.
…worst theme song ever, btw. ow, my ears.
some guy figured out an easy way to get easy controlling in sonic free riders. and he’s a heavy dude too! all you have to do is stick your arm out to the side like you’re collecting coins.
apparently, this game has the most divisive reviews. people that figured out the game gave it higher reviews (IGN, japanese reviewers, etc.) while people who didn’t gave it poor reviews.
want to see the japanese patriotism? on japanese review sites, they like Sonic and Dance Masters (aka Dance Evolution) the most.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeLAOht9pYo&feature=player_embedded
I always held the opinion that Sonic games that don’t come out on nintendo consoles suck, but a friend of mine got the game when it came out and he said he loved it. Though he never did do the 2 player mode when I asked him about it. This game actually pissed me off before it was released because it was a kinect exclusive, the first 2 games were multi platform and I loved them, making this one exclusive to only one console feels like a huge betrayal. But I guess it can serve as a warning to future developers, for now at least they should include standard control options in case people don’t want to flail around like idiots in front of their TV…though that might have tempted Sega to make a multi-platform release…y’know what? I blame KINECT itself for inflicting this on us.
Joe, when I saw this review and you showed the introduction, I felt sick seeing it. I hope this thing doesn’t do well on the 360, and if it comes to the Wii, I am going to be fucking pissed.
We need to know when games simply don´t work. Thanks for the review Joe, the happy end was glorious.
It’s amazing Mythmaker gets several ‘thumbs down’. I am wondering if people are thumbing him down merely because he disagrees with Joe, or because others have and it’s a ‘bandwagon’ thing (this question is rhetorical but there’s no anger or spite in it, it’s just a pondering).
I think Mythmaker was rating Joe’s Review, not the game. He was addressing the way Joe reviewed the game, not the final score.
This may sound like I’m defending Mythmaker’s point of view. I’m not. I haven’t liked a Sonic game since “Sonic and Knuckles”, and I can’t imagine this game would be any different. Plus I haven’t liked a racing game since “F-Zero” (SNES). Combine my two genera of dislike together into one game and you will get a game I would avoid out of personal baggage and history.
But what I’m saying is Mythmaker was rating Joe’s review. I don’t agree with Mythmaker, I just think we’re being overly harsh on him. He does have the right not to like an “angry joe” review.
Personally I loved this review. It had the anger level I can’t get enough of. I rate the presentation of this review quite high on my personal scale (opposite Mythmaker).
Well said. Everyone has the right to disagree with anything anyone says, it doesn’t make them right, but they have the freedom to do so. I believe you Americans have that written down somewhere important, I forget where.
Adding on from my previous statement earlier, Sonic Colours may well be what we have all been waiting for since the Dreamcast.
Hey Joe klick on this one :
http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100831203250/sonic/images/3/32/Sonic-Free-Riders-cover.jpg
Hot website.
I think that Sega has better properties that they could have turned into a Kinect game. Daytona USA or Jet Set Radio Future are games that could work well with the Kinect game mechanics.
Wow, I feel ill after watching you play, Joe.
Be assured it’s not you who makes me sick. It’s the game – and I’ve never had an issue like that before, not even in racing games.
So, the controls are loose to say the least, tending to either oversteer or not respond enough, it seems there’s a delay (half a second or so – I’m not going to use a stopwatch) between you leaning and the game responding (which might be the reason why you felt ill). So yeah, one bad egg found, hopefully there are very few (or even better none) left.
hahaha joe you are friggin hilarious man.. lmao.
The sonic cycle never fails xD
But i dont think the graphics look bad tbh, sure they arent top quality, but they arent horrible.
I’m not suprised that this game made you feel sick.
With it’s bad camera, graphics and awful gameplay, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) is the ONLY game i’ve ever played that has made my physically sick =S
My God…At least Kane and Lynch 2 was playable even if it was only 4 hours long. Seriously Joe, go play some Mario Kart to balance out the evil. IGN has also lost what little respect I had for them if they’re giving this game a 7.5 out of 10.
Damn! Angry Joe certainly lived up to his name here. I didn’t think a game could actually piss you off more than Kane and Lynch 2.
Joe just got raped by a blue spikie blur. No NO NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
If you really are a nerd, you must be the angriest nerd that we have ever heard of, and we love you for it!
I got Sonic Riders, for $20, brand new, back in 2006, if only out of morbid curiosity.
The game was broken beyond belief; it controlled very stiffly and was unresponsive, and well, it doesn’t deserve – or need – a full-on review. It was just a pain-in-the-ass to try and play, especially when you already have decent racing games to play, like F-Zero.
Considering that the previous Sonic Riders games were slip-shod, slap-dash jobs, I don’t see why that wouldn’t be the case, especially for nothing that’s being developed for new hardware – the Kinect.
Man, Joe, kudos to you for getting a refund from Gamegestapo.
P.S. If it’s any consolation, if I ran a video-games store, I’d run it independently, and I wouldn’t be carrying or stocking games that got reviews as bad as this, seeing as how there wouldn’t be a whole lot of demand for them…
Early FPSs used to give me vertigo, so I can feel your pain on a game that makes you want to hurl after 5 minutes of play. Sounds like this one was torture on a lot of levels.
Holding hands during a racing game? Seriously? Maybe they were trying to find a way to keep people from ramming into each other while playing…sounds counter-productive, though. Forcing people to be that close to each other just begs for a concussion.
In order to save sonic sega needs to do 5 things
5. Get good voice actors.
4. Drop all the goofy side characters, Mainly stick to Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles.
3. Stop all the car and hoover board crap.
2. Stick to 2-d
1. Realize that Sonic is about running through the levels as fast as possible. Meaning I do not want to find Emerald shards hidden in the level. I do not want to go around in a mech, car, or anything else. I just want to run through the level. This is why sonic adventure was fun for the Sonic and Tails levels. This is why the best levels of sonic adventure 2 where the Sonic and Shadow levels.
A game worst then Kane and Lynch 2? I never thought one would ever exist but apparently its name is Sonic Free Rider.
Yup, my suspions are confirmed, I never had any hope for this game…
I’m guessing this game was made by Mario.
Wow, what a pile of shit ! And gamestop gave you back your credit. ! AHAHHAHA ! If was working there, this game will stay where they belong.
Sonic has let me down again….
Well this is Sega, they hate competence and love finding new ways to screw up so they can get as much money as possible while refusing to give any effort.
But I must say this is disapointing even for Sega, the first 2 Rider games were decent in their own right and I still play Zero Gravity ocasionly
So would you say the sonic team was trying to use the kinect launch as a…
*sunglasses*
..free ride?
How’s this for an answer? YEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHH
NO!!!!HOW MANY SHIT SONIC GAMES DO SEGA WANT TO MAKE.EVEN SONIC COLERS IS BASICLY SHIT IN MY OPINION!!!
jesus i was getting a headache from just watching the video of this game,i cant imagine what it would feel like to play this crap fest
Funny that, because some people didn’t have problems with the controls. http://kotaku.com/5686311/is-sonic-free-riders-broken-or-is-it-the-reviewers
Hopefully Joe gets to review some better games in the coming days. Here’s hoping CoD mellows you out a bit.
That soundtrack was serious garbage.
A slight undestatement.
This is the angriest I have ever seen Joe. As painful as it must have been for him, it sure was funny to watch him flip out.
So apparently a Sonic game was bad. Who’dve thought…
Out of experience, FLIPPING SONIC R HAD BETTER GAMEPLEY THAN THIS, where sonic R (to me) had a so bad its good feel to me, this game looks like absolute shit
Thanks Angry Joe, also, how were you able to return that shitty game?
Hey other Joeeeeeeeeeee
What would have been hilarious, is when Joe is saying in his car after he doesn’t want to see the game again, is the game, slowly rise up behind him in the driver’s side window. That would of been funny as shit! Awesome review Joe! I’ll go out to get it. WAIT no I won’t!
In the first seconds when you were on screen with that messed up look I knew it was gonna be really bad
.
Joe, thank you for subjecting yourself to such pain to keep the rest of us from buying that shitty game.
You’re AWESOME Joe,you’re clearly the best reviewer out there right now in my opinion.
As for the game.I blame SEGA for the FAILURE that this game is.It seems to me that everything that SEGA made is a FAILURE.
Weird how the other two sonic games that have and are going coming out are amazing and yet this sonic game is completely shit. Was this done by the same group of people?
What the hell? Ok I’m kinda disturbed now, you said you got sick playing this game? Well I just got sick in my mouth for no reason WATCHING YOU PLAY THIS GAME! I didn’t like kinect to begin with but after that… I’m taking that as an omen to stay waaaaay away from this game.
I read on eurogamer months ago that this is just a remake of a remake and the guy slammed the tech demo he was being given as truely awfull, this game right here is why kinect will fall flat on its face.
For every game that works you’ll get 10 shitty ones that dont, same with the move.
Oh boy… I can’t wait to feel bad after playing this. :3
after… I got that game… and kinect.
Any movie tie in? Really really?
Joe, you raise a vital line of questioning here, one that must be addressed immediately for the sake of gamers everywhere.
Sonic Freeriders or Superman 64?
Sonic Freeriders or Superman 64? Thats not fair.
A different comparison that I’m legitimately interested in knowing which is worse….
Sonic Free Riders or Sonic 06.
Holy shit dude! I could almost taste your hate in my mouth. o_O
So this is one of the bigger Kinect launch titles? Not a good sign for kinect, not a good signt at all…
You must be cursed or something Joe. 2010 has been a renissance of really good Sonic games. Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing on every console, Sonic 4: Episode 1 on every console, and Sonic Colors. And you end up buying and playing the one broken piece of garbage in the line up for this year. This was an awesome review. Hilarious as I expected it to be when first announced. I was grinning from ear to ear from start to finish.
I hope you get around to reviewing Sonic 4 eventually. I’m hoping the E3 visit wasn’t just for show.
Sonic Free Riders is a cheap cash-in on the fans and people with the kinect, I fucking knew it too as soon as they announced it. This is the Final instance of sega Jerking us around if We Sonic fans have anything to say. Sonic is Sega’s main dude but they never, EVER have treated The series in the same Manner and attention that Nintendo has treated Mario. The only service it gives the fans is the new voices, but hey there’s Fucking youtube. let some other poor sap buy the game and record lines. This set a standard for Sonic Colors, I Will Hold Colors to a standard of Treating the customer like a person instead of a number, i can only hope that the reason this game sucked SO MUCH BALLS, is because the creative team was working on Colors, But That is not an excuse, Either Put all of your effort into a game, Or Stop jerking us around and do what you do best.
Joe, You now know how the sonic fan base feels, The empty souls after playing Cash-in after cash-in, Not even being taken seriously by the developers because we aren’t in their demograpic. I wish you well.
Ugh…..why is it that Sonic games are just epic fail now a days?
Nice Review Joe, this is the reason that I come here and listen to a more honest view from gamers. Look at it this way, the next game that you play can only get better. ONLY.
hey, did anybody notice, that the boards are very similar to the hover board from back to the future…
*duck and and run*
xDDDD
I hear that Sonic Free Riders isn’t that great.
Joe!
You are now my favourite reviewer!
I will never, NEVER, again trust IGN when it comes to their game reviews. After IGN gave the game 7,5 / 10 I thought: ‘sure, why not pick it up for my kinect?’. But as proved in your review, Joe, the game is broken to the extent of being unplayable!!! IT’S A PIECE OF DOG DROPPING!
Fun to know is that I also got a full refund and an apology from the store clerk for not steering me clear of this abomination of a game! That’s how bad it is!
Joe, you have my trust, my sword, my bow and – of course – my axe!
Cheers from Sweden!
// Andreas
i wouldnt trust IGN for reviewes if i were you, those guys are too over the top biased in their reviews
Oh and Sonic has gone downhill ever since they started calling Robotnick fracking Eggman, what kind of shitty name is that>
You do realize his original Japanese name has always been Eggman, right?
While it’s likely just a coincidence, the quality of the games went down around the time they made the change…mostly because the change over was because of the addition of voice acting to the game. I think the less words that are spoken aloud in a Sonic game, the better it is. Take the ear rape music in this game for example…unless it’s “Sonic Boom”, we don’t want to hear it Sega.
That’s subjective to opinion, really; some people might like it, and some might not. I’ll respect the opinion, either way.
And it’s really nothing more than a coincidence. I don’t mind that the Sonic characters have voices, as I believe it gives them more personality. I’m not sure if I would keep playing Sonic games if voices were not added.
Too late for me got it at launch and now have an achivement on it and as an achivo whore means I gotta carry on with it, though it works for me apart from spin jumping…..we shall see
Holy crap…I didn’t think a game could be THAT bad, especially to the extent it makes you ill.
honestly i’m still a fan of sonic, and will always be a fan of sonic, but that doesnt mean i will be a stupid sheep and buy a horrible game, its appalling to see how sega is dropping the ball so much on sonic who is supposed to be their mascot, i mean come on!
anyways, great review, straight to the point, i hope you didnt get any stones in your kidney joe, i havent seen you this pissed since…. well, since the star wars 3D video
Awesome. This was an AWESOME review Joe.
Truthful, honest. And best thing you did, is you standed up as a consumer, you returned the copy because the game was bad and demanded another game. And I hope everyone here will do the same thing if they have a broken game at home, because this is the only way to show companys that you can’t rip us off and get away with it.
This review should also inspire other reviewers of this site.
And also from this day forth I expect every game that sucks to be returned to the store, and not only from Angry Joe. Then this site might REALLY make a difference in the gaming community.
Good work Joe.
Great review. It’s really sad that the expectations of games have become so low that other game reviewers are willing to to give something that is so obviously garbage ratings like 7.5.
the worst thing is that they will still make a hell lot of money out of this
This was without a doubt the most angry Angry Review I’ve ever seen you do, Angry Joe.
It’s good to see you are as angry as ever and that you don’t just take the garbage that these developers just throw in our faces and expects us to pay a whole lot of many for.
As you said, if a game doesn’t work, you should get a refund!
The amount of the “no thanks” rating is incredible. Good on you for returning it Joe! Shit games don’t deserve to be on the shelf of shops.
Dang it Joe, awesome review[even if you were very angry]. I guess the angrier you get, the more the review goes up the level of awesome.
Man, I really, REALLY wanted this to be a good game. The first two was decent, heck I even say that the first game was a better then most racing games! buutt nooo, Soinc once again hurts me. Oh well, thanks for the warning Joe.
This game looks so bad it kinda of hurt me.
I’m so sorry that you had to go through this Joe, but look on the bright side, this “game” (if you can call it that) is an example of what NOT to do for the Kinect. Think of it more as a stepping stone into the future, people will learn from this great mistake and hopefully the Kinect will have some truly amazing games in about 5 years when people figure out how the damn thing works.
On the other hand, third party developers don’t really like messing around in something as risky as a game made for a peripheral market, plus retraining the teams on how to program a game for that specific peripheral is a costly business. It’s why the Wii didn’t see a lot of titles from third party developers on its initial release and is probably still hard-pressed to find people who want to make something special for the system, but I digress.
Right now the future of the Kinect is sketchy at best. It has masses of potential and is a very impressive piece of kit, the problem with it is whether or not there will be any games out there that can use this potential effectively enough to make the Kinect a worthwhile purchase. Your suggestion to being able to use both the controller and the Kinect in tandem sounds like the best way to go, I’d personally love to be able to look around corners and dodge bullets by simply performing that action with my body instead of a button combination.
My sympathies for your suffering, Joe. At least it’s not E.T. on the Atari, eh?
Sonic…….just go back to wiping Mario’s ass……..you blue haired wannabe hippie.I’m just…..done…..not even Sonic 4 will impress me man……I’m tired of you now…..your like a one hit wonder band from the 80′s. You tried to relive your glory days of the past going on tour 10 years later, but you realize your doing it just to feel better about yourself and nobody really cares about your music anymore, and even though you release a new album and a new single, and you have a devoted fan base that will love you until the end, the damage has already been done, your new music is mediocre/terrible, and everyone has moved on with their lives.
It’s time to grow up Sonic………………..It’s time to grow up………………
This isn’t YouTube. Please leave the immature comments off the website.
What is immature about that? It’s a very good analogy. I think we need a video on how to properly address an opinion. Seriously.
Alot of these Kinect games are casual-friendly titles, particularly the ones in the launch group. That means, by their very nature, they should be easy to pick up and play, or else the casual players (kids and people who don’t play very often) are going to become incredibly frustrated and angry. If a game doesn’t work, it completely undermines that.
I can picture my little sister, who loves the Sonic titles and the characters there-in, becoming incredibly frustrated trying to play this game. I can picture my stepfather, who sometimes games with her, trying it out as well and becoming just as frustrated. As a knowledgeable consumer, I can’t in good conscience inflict that on people I care about.
SEGA YOU 100% INSULTED SOINC
NOW I HATE SEGA WITH PASSION
You sir are the man! When the theme song strated I was hmm this is ok but when the lyrics started, it went so bad I had to mute the whole video for a bit. God! That is awful!
You truly showed us why you are the ANGRY Joe. I could feel the real anger, hatred and rage from the video. The game looked really bad and even if you raged you still explained why it sucked really well.
I kinda wished we could have seen the face of the Gamestop worker who had to serve you. I hope you didn’t raged to the poor worked too much.
But yeah, Sega just needs to stop making Sonic games and give it a rest. They will never get the glorious days back when Sonic was cool and super fast, they are just making those sweet childhood memories feel… so wrong. Damn I hate Sega so much right now…
This is why I was weary of the Kinect to begin with, but from your actual Kinect review, I saw that it is actually worth a go, but probably not for a year or so. But seeing things like this…LIKE THIS…Being put onto shelves as a game for the Kinect have made me reconsider the hope you gave me. If people are going to make terrible games that don’t even work on the Kinect, I don’t see the point of getting one. Especially when it’s going to cost us $200 – we pay an extra $50 for it. That always seems the be the case, however (I bought one of the 360 slims, and Australians had to pay $50 more for that too…Which is fucking bullshit. Essentially, whatever it costs for you over there, add 50 bucks onto the price and it’s what we have to pay).
But, then again, considering they haven’t made a decent Sonic game in years, this was probably to be expected.
Wow, I usually don’t see Angry Joe quite that… angry. It actually makes me glad that I have neither the money nor the space for a Kinect, if it means I’m missing out on crappy games like this poor addition to a franchise that I’m not quite sure how it hasn’t crumbled yet. (Though from what I’ve heard Dance Central might be worth it.) Nice to see you’re doing what you’ve always said and not going along with all of the industry-controlled reviewers.
Guess what I’m getting for Joe for christmas? Muahaha!
Just kidding, I’m not that cruel..
dont ya miss the old sonic games in which they gave the music to Crush 40? they rocked!
So sorry you had to suffer through that. I don’t think there’s been a single good Sonic racing game. Ever. And that soundtrack.. Glad to see that they never evolved past the Sonic R level of music: Aural rape.
And how many GameStop employees did you have to hit with your cuss cannon to get that refund? Incredible! o.o;
Hope Kinect Sports treats ya better.
Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing would say otherwise.
Why Sega, why?! Why must you abuse Sonic for, mediocre game after mediocre game (at least that’s all I see). You know I use to love sonic back on the Mega Drive/Genesis (which I still have btw), but not anymore.
THIS GAME IS BULLSHIT AN INSULT TO THE FIRST 2 SOINC RIDERS ON PS2 AND I DID NOT CARE ABOUT THAT GARBAGE GAME LIKE MW2
NOW WHERES STAR WARS Kinect AT
Oh wow, that is so horrendously bad that I feel like I should say sorry to you, Joe. Even though I have nothing to do with this game.
Awesome Review.
To me it seems more logical to conclude that this game was either based on a previous version of the kinect firmware, ( like the one that was at E3 ) or a game that was rushed to be available at the release of the kinect because there were no racing games or games that could be played by 2 players at the same time, without involving injury.
That being said, and with all do respect, this revue and the feelings of anger or of being sick after playing it are, in my opinion, more to do with the Cowboys them the game.
thz
I’m not suprised about this to be announce. Being a Sonic fan myself I didn’t even know about this game at all, at least until I looked up the list of launch titles for Kinect and saw it on there, and I was like… huh?
There was zero marketing for this game, zero marketing for a SONIC game, that seems a little suspicious and honestly, I think Sega tried to pull a Boycott with this game. Just releasing it to recoop lost money for making on the game and possibly turning there attentions to something else (hopefully colors for wii/ds).
That said Joe, It may be the lowest scoring Kinect game, but it is only your 2nd reviewed game as well. I have a horrible feeling for you that before the year is out, you will have another 1/10 Kinect title to add to your list. And maybe much more before the Kinect hits the one year milestone.
I honestly am shocked you even considered this Joe. I don’t have a 360 but I STILL know every sonic game released in the last 6 years have been the worst games that year.
As Yahtzee said, take him behind the shed and put two barrels through his head, then re-purpose him as a littler picking device.
Also, the part where you said “AND WIPED THEIR FUCKING ASS WITH IT” nearly had me on the floor. The delivery and motions you made were flawless.
Dear god, and I thought Sonic 2006 was the worst thing to come out of the franchise. Well we have a new contender for that title. The theme sucks by itself let alone compared to some of the awesome tracks from past games.
I’ll probably still get it if I ever get a Kinect just out of a morbid need to experience it myself and as a sign camaraderie to all my fellow gamers that suffered through this awful, for want of a better word, game.
My praise to you sir for getting your money back, that is by far the most awesome thing I’ve seen in a while.
Finally Angry Joe is angry again. You been so positive and friendly lately. Keep up the good work.
haha great review. I as well as others tried really hard to tell you on twitter to not get it. I guess you dun got a good bite in the ass haha
So bad that I wont even buy it if I get a Kinect.
<_<
Ok maybe for 5$.
Well, this isn’t a good start for the Kinect, is it? That being said, the only way to go from here is up.
I just hope the sonic episode 1 marketplace game is better then this one.
It is far better than Free Riders.
Seriously, spend the $15 and buy it. You won’t be disappointed.
Good to know. I loved the old sonic games, so this might be a fresh breath of air to the franchise.
Sonic Team= Epic failure on console (almost) everytime.
Sonic 4= Fun
Sonic DS games= Funner
ANY Sonic Riders game= RAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHHHHHH SO BAD
You asked how this game is getting good reviews on other websites. Im looking at metacritic right now, and this isnt doing too well on there. Yeah, I see 2 good reviews however you have you consider their source. One of from IGN which is one of those websites that will accept money in exchange for overlooking the negative parts of a game so it will seem better. The other positive review is from OXM. C’mon you HAD to know the magazine that’s owned by Microsoft would give launch title for the Kinect a good review. Joe youre smarter than this, youre letting your anger cloud your vision.
I am curious to know however which angers you more. Playing this game or paying full retail price for Kane and Lynch 2?
Also, one last question not related to the video. Can we expect to see Lisa on here? Im not one of those pervy guys that watches her videos with one free hand, but I did think she had potential. I thought you and her made a good team and Im genuinely curious to know if we can expect to see her on this website. Or have I not looked hard enough?
ugh stupid lack of an edit button >.<
This review was hilarious! I love Joes rants!
Joe, I gotta give you a lot of props for this one. You started to lose your voice like 5 mins into the video, but you held your ground and pushed through to the end. On top of playing the worst game so far. That is brutally hard work!
Sadly, I think Joe might see a few copies of this game from fans at conventions. Kinda like FF8 with Spoony, or a bat credit card with the Nostalgia critic.
So…you recommend it then?
this is not a game. this is the essence of failure in disc form.
Sean Fauz could have clued you in…there hasn’t been a good Sonic game since the Sega Genesis. Sega has been slacking off, counting on mindless devotion from die hard fans and selling to kids who are suckered in by whatever half-decent Sonic cartoon is on Saturday morning TV. Say what you want about Nintendo…they at least put effort into everything.
Hopefully Sega have been putting all their effort into Sonic Colours, but I don’t hold my breath as that would be like there being a Kane and Lynch 3 and it being good
I knew from Twitter that Joe was angry about this game, but nothing could have prepared me for the anger that I just witnessed. The thing that I took away from this piece– aside from Joe’s obvious vitriol towards the game– was that he didn’t seem to have to rehearse much. He just said what was on his mind and let loose. I really like that.
And, methinks that the auto-censor missed one F-bomb, Joe.
No offense Joe, but you can’t expect SEGA to put effort into a Sonic title, they’ve been blatantly milking Sonic for YEARS at the expense of other, better games. I mean it’s really obvious especially if you know SEGA. I mean it’s really something most of us have come to expect from them….
Probably my favorite AJ review so far, I loved the rage. LOVE THE RAGE
I thought this could be a good game based on a couple of quick previews I saw. I even liked the two player concept. Sucks to see how horrid this game truly was. When you can barely even navigate the menu to play a game mode, your game is truly shite.
I think the problem is is with the innovation. Sonic Riders 1 was Good, and fun, regardless of what the “professionals” say, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity was ok, not as good as the first one, regardless of what the cracked-out fans say, and now this game, which actually provoked Joe to the lowest score he can. He even gave a game with only 4 hours of gameplay a higher score. So the game was the most fun with a basic Controller, less fun with a bit of motion sensory, then fully relying on Motion Sensory gets you this.
Bwahahah a TRULY ANGRY Review indeed. Seemed like absolute failure to me, now I wonder…
What if someone secretly laid a copy of Sonic Free Riders in his bed while he slept? ^^
I think I felt think the anger through the computer. When I am surprised to see ANGRY Joe in an angry mood, Something has gone horribly wrong.
You see, this is what happens to a man that has faith in a Sonic Riders game.
Man angry joe, this is a good comeback after the medal of honor review, and the best scene of them all was the refund one, kinda like the chick fil-a video.
Okay now I kinda want to know where you live so I can send you another copy, just in order to see the backlash. I’d probably be able to hear the shriek…. sorry manly scream, from this side of the pond.
It’s a shame how kids of this generation will never know of the good sonic games.
Dude, I’m not sure about in America, but in the UK, it’s against your statutory rights to be refused a refund if you’re not satisfied with the product.
If they say no, you say yes twice as firmly.
But yeah, I love Sonic, but anything with an obligatory extra character, usually = bad. I’ve never played a Sonic Riders game, and I shall continue this trend.
Not so much in America. Businesses make their own policies when it comes to refunds, though most will offer the possibility of a refund just because it’s good business, but different companies have different standards for it. For example, Barnes and Noble will only take returns within the first two weeks and only with a receipt. That’s extended to two months if they have a gift receipt as opposed to a regular receipt.
However, for the Nook, their e-reader, while the two-week policy IS in place, they can only return it if it’s unopened or if it’s defective. The defective part is covered under warranty, but for returns of opened ones there’s a 10% restocking fee – i.e. you don’t get a full refund.
Where I live, we don’t get refunds. Well, only if it’s faulty, but if you have otherwise oppened the box your game was in and played it, you’re never going to see your money again.
Man that sucks the big one.
There are shops here that will have a policy of no refunds, but they have to inform you of it, otherwise it doesn’t fly, most shops are usually solid about refunds and returns though since it means futher business from you, and possibly referals to other customers.
I could have told you that the game was bad just because it is a Sonic Riders game, but sadly I’ve played worse, much, much worse.
qick some one send him said game and sonic riders has all ways sucked dood
Great review Joe, thanks for taking your time to warn us about it!
Dude Joe….Props man You are the Appinidy of epic win and I thank your for it Review one Joe….Review on….
I liked the review but hated what you had to go thru to give it to us. I also really enjoyed the “flip out” at the end. That clip needs to be in more of your videos. That and “FOUR HOURS!!!!!” are your own personally catch phrases/memes. Plz play them when appriopriate.
“loud, irritating, and terrible”
oh, so its aimed for kids then?
Hey Joe, question- You build a space ship for your headquarters, but apparently theres no game-review room? Unless, you made your game-review room in your space ship to look like a living room with a kitchen nearby.
There is, I usually review in the War Room. Check my Alpha Protocol Review if you want see the HQ’s Captains Quarters where I like to play my games when I’m on board.
…I’m a nerd.
We love you that way Joe.
And oddly enough that was my first comment… innuendos anyone?
IGN and OXM gave this game a 7.5.
Obvious sellout is obvious, don’t you agree?
Joe, I warned you my man…I tried to tell you to return it and go get Kinect Sports instead…well now you have, but the scars are already there, in your gamerscore. You will now wish for natal to delete it, just to get rid of the Sonic Free Rider memory forever.
Joe I commend you sir for not only surviving that gane, but also getting a full refund from gamestop no less. Those assholes have actually stiffed me out of 50 or so bucks. Also I’m sorry that you had to suffer this piece of shit.
oops sorry meant game
Well, I can really feel Angry Joe’s anger in this review and it’s no joke or try to be funny (although it was) this time. I thought this game is good game to pick up if i decide to buy Kinect because review in several site was ok, but I guess Angry Joe just saved me 60 bucks and loads of frustration. I can’t even believe Sonic Team deved such an inhumane pile of $#!7..
Sega hasn’t made a Good Sonic Game Since Sonic Adventures 1 and 2 for the Dreamcast…but this review surprise me …joe…are you okay Hermano? i have never seen you so pissed since…..4 HOURS??!??!?!!? 4 HOURS???!?!?!?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? WHAT IS THIS BULLSHIT?? anyway…great review Joe
I didn’t expect this game to be good, but the this has to be the biggest kick to sonic’s balls to date and the final few fan boys who were still buying his games have probably given up hope. Joe just give up on the Kinect right now and go play Black Ops, playing a good game is sure to make the periodic vomiting and other side effects from this game go away.
AngryJoe gets angry! Now that’s what I’m talking about.
I want to see more of these rant filled reviews. Especially since his name is AngryJoe.
I don’t. Lately the tone has been straying from the more informative norm, leaning more towards cheap laughs.
The whole show is cheap laughs. Always. What show were you watching. You just dont like this one – thats cool.
I don’t like the yelling one’s either, but everyone else seems to.
I prefer the more calm reviews, but I suppose I’m part of a minority.
Personally I don’t care wether it’s calm or a rant like this one, I just want for you to tell us wether it’s good or it’s bad, that is all I want from your reviews, beside craploads of laughs, keep them up.
I wonder though, will the next Sonic game be… EVEN WORSE?!?
Does it matter? If you don’t like Joe’s style of reviewing games, go somewhere else. As far as I am concerned, as long as I get the gist of what Joe is trying to say, and he did on this review so far, has done just that.
Why? Because I like Joe’s style of reviewing. If I have complaints, that doesn’t mean I hate it.
I like The Dark Knight, but I can criticize it. Does that mean I hate it?
Not sure what you are talking about with his reviews lately be non-informative. He talked about the gameplay, the menu, the soundtrack, the graphics, the multiplayer. What more do you need? Going into more then that would just be tedious and honestly if all those aspects he mentioned were crap, can there be anything left to possibly redeem it?
Joe’s opinion doesn’t agree with your own, fine, no one is asking you to change it. But this fight you have here is pointless as Joe is not going to make a follow up video to express how he was wrong. Besides, as you’ve said yourself, you haven’t even played the game so who are you to say Joe’s opinion is wrong?
@RavenTail. Can’t believe I have to do this, but apparently they capped the reply chain.
But anyway, You seem to have gotten the wrong idea here. That or your inflated sense of self-righteousness can’t allow you to see any possibility. Let me just say this right now.
I don’t want an apology. I demand nothing. I’m rendering an honest opinion in hopes that someone (Joe in partuclar) might look at it and say, “hmm, maybe he’s got a point.” Instead, all I’m getting is a “you don’t know what you’re talking about” and “lower your expectations, it’s comedy!”
You know what? If you think that this review is good, that it is lacking in nothing, that there is on possible way that it could have been done better, then good for you. But move along. If you’re just going to blindly tell me I’m wrong, it’s a waste of both our time.
Signed up on blistered thumbs spesifically to defend “Mythmaker”.
He is correct. I don’t know ANYTHING about the game from this so-called “review” all I know is that angry joe doesn’t like it, for a few vague complaints that he never really showed or mentioned.
He finds the title music bad, he finds the controls unresponsive, and nobody is playing it online.
..that’s about it!
I like Joe, I do, I watched him rant and rave I’ve watched him play D&D, I’ve watched him interview people, participate at channel awesome meetups, following him on twitter, everything. I still find this a rant, with no substance.
I’m going to go find another review where I can actually see the game’s faults for myself.
Who the crap keeps buying these games? Say what you will about the Sonic Adventure games, at least there were a few good tunes sprinkled in, as well as controls that don’t make Resident Evil’s look flawless in comparison. The Sonic Rider series hasn’t been any good since the first game, and it’s always the same problem. Controls, and music.
From the sound of this review, that problem has stayed through two more games. Good lord, is that depressing…
damn it joe, you shoulda bought colors, I actually heard that was really good (for the ds and the wii). This on the other hand looks like a total piece of garbage. I can just see some five year old sitting at home and crying because he can’t figure out how to select a level.
You thought the game was going to be good because it had sonic in it? Where have you been the past 7 years?
Playing Sonic 4? I thought it was pretty good :3 The ones on the DS were great too.
Oh, if you think that’s bad you should try Konami’s Sonic Riders clone Adrenalin Misfits (yes there were two high-speed board racing games released on Kinect on the same week!)
Wow, I’ve never seen you so pissed off before. Not even your twitter posts had me prepared for this. I can’t believe GameStop actually gave you a full refund. What the did you say to the person behind the counter?
I like to think it was something like “I’M ANGRY JOE! IF YOU DON’T GIVE ME A REFUND I WILL MOCK YOU ON THE INTERNET UNTIL YOUR LIFE IS RUINED!”
Pretty much.
I said, DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM??!!? I WILL DESTROY YOU.
lol.
Nah, I just told them that I wanted my full refund, the game didnt work as it said. They tried to resist. Its not their policy, blah blah blah – you just dont budge and make sure you are firm and speaking with a manager.
Angry Joe: Fighting for consumers the world over.
This game looks to be the new Vampire Rain or Big Riggs. Except with Big Riggs at least when you could get it to work it wasn’t stress-inducing.
I use to work at a GameStop as a seasonal worker and a woman actually tried to return an opened game and her reason for returning it was the game was too dark, like they couldn’t see the stuff on the screen. I told them the same thing the guys at your GameStop and she gave me a little attitude for it. In the end she just traded it in. If you showed up in the store I worked at, and you came in THAT angry, I would given a free game for each system, plus $20
How come some swear words are bleeped out while others aren’t?
“I remember a time when you could return an opened game because it was a bad game. You can’t do that anymore.”
What, seriously? In Australia we can return opened copies simply cause we beat them for a full refund.
Not from what i’ve seen! Where do you buy your games, Wibbers?
EB, Game, and now JB HiFi. All three offer a money back garuntee if you’re not satisfied.
It makes up slightly for paying twice as much.
Excellent review. As the Emperor would say, “I feel your anger…let your hatred flow”.
I’m really surprised at you Joe… There were other Sonic racing games before and they mostly failed to be anywhere good. Why would anyone think this one would be any good let alone adding Kinect to it?
Although it might have gotten a 2 or 3 if it was controller based. Maybe if it had different music…
Or maybe if it never was released.
Yeah I wasn’t interested in Sonic riders at all…..AT ALL!!!! I’m so sick of sonic team and their lack of creativity with Sonic.
I never want to hear the intro music to Sonic riders again.
Oh and congrats on successfully returning the game Joe…I wish I had done that with Other M
Joe’s pure rage is unquenchable. We all thought Sonic 06 was the worst Sonic game in the franchise. We were wrong.
After watching this review, I feel like I’ll be at my local store and see someone buying Free Riders. Whether it’s for themselves or their kids, I pray and hope their sanities will still be intact when they bring it back.
It’s clearly not 2006. Everyone seems to keep forgetting Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic R. *shudders*
You clearly haven’t see the scene in Sonic 06 where Sonic kisses a young princess who happens to be human. How can any of those games you mentioned be worse than that?
A 1/10? Ouch.
That’s really sad for SEGA’s first attempt at a Kinect title, and with my favorite mascot no less.
Sigh. Well, at least Sonic 4 was worth the cash, and Colors is on the way. So far, it’s one hit and one miss for him this year; although, if the DS/Wii gameplay trailers of Colors are to be believed, it should be a nice way to end the year.
what about that Kart racing game?
You mean Sonic and SEGA All Stars Racing? That game is excellent.
The reason why is SEGA was playing to it’s strengths with that title, using the engine that powered SEGA Rally Revo.
Actually, here’s a suggestion: Why not develop a different Sonic Riders with the engine used for the Skate series? The engine and code are nearly flawless now, so just play around with it a bit, and you’ve got an open world hover-boarding game worthy of Sonic’s name.
I’d rather never see another Sonic Riders game again. Seriously, no one liked the first two. Why in the hell did they need to make a third game? Especially when no one could get the controls to work in the second game?
The thing that gets me, is how Sega announced they’d be ceasing the pressing, of anymore bad Sonic games, like Unleashed and 2006, yet they continue to put out games like the Riders series.
Double standard much?
They’re terrible games, but people still buy sonic!
So… I’m not quite clear about it. Was this better or worse than Dance Central?
Hey, be nice; nothing wrong with a little sarcasm.
Yeah and the funnest par (to me at least) is I made this exact same comment on TGWTG and it had 6 up and 0 down.
Wow Joe. I have never, ever seen you so livid. You weren’t even this mad about Kane and Lynch 2. I guess we all really know what your Berserk Button is now.
Sonic games for the past few years have been generally bad and while I really wasn’t expecting much from this game, I wasn’t expecting this. I can tell it’s a problem because I almost felt sick from watching a 5-minute gameplay video online. Normally, I’m pretty good with movement in stuff like this, so I can only imagine the problem from playing it multiple times.
What really surprises me is that the music is bad. I listened to a few songs from the game over Youtube besides the main theme after watching this, and I agree that they are really not very good. No matter how bad the Sonic game, they’ve always had pretty good music. I guess that just goes to show about this game.
You really just needed to let how you felt out, huh Joe? Ah well, I hope you’re good now.
Thank you Joe from stopping many gamers from buying this horrible gaming experence.
I am sure gamers were pretty skeptical with the game the moment they saw some quick looks from sites. I took a look at it over at Giant Bomb and it literally gave me a fucking migraine which is something I can hardly tolerate.
Loved the end.
Sadly these controls still look better than Heavy Rain’s controls
Now we must see the sports game review! When they say you are free, they mean you are free to return this shitty game for a real game.
I hate being masochistic. You make me want to buy this. Like James Rolfe made me buy Ghostbusters and get a headache for days from the music. Like Doug Walker made me watch Garbage Pail Kids and feel sick to my stomach for the rest of the day. And now this.
I’m just lucky I don’t have enough money to spend on stuff like a Kinect right now. Maybe for Christmas… Just hope my parents aren’t shocked with the price.
…..Really, Joe?
I don’t debate the score; I haven’t played the game, you have, so I’m not going to go on about how the score is unfair.
But this…this is something I’d expect from some faceless YouTube ranter. Yes, this review is on the level of a raging fanboy in terms of quality. Why?
First off, if you’[re serious about complaining about the music, try playing more than just one track, which doesn’t even play during gameplay! That’s the openign theme, right? How about something you can’t skip, something that people are actually going to care about?
Second, ranting about the menu. Yes, it did not look intuitive. But if the ‘incredible dexterity’ with which you tried to navigate that system was genuine, I’ll be very surprised. That looked downright pathetic. If you’re going to try and give a review, don’t over-exaggerate your problems for the camera.
Third, what about the game was unresponsive? The only clip you showed of you actually “playing” the game looked pretty responsive to me. If you want to show us the game being buggy, show us some bugs!
And…that’s it. There’s literally nothign else. What about the story you didn’t talk about? Or how about the actual structure of the game? These are things people might want to know about.
Admittedly, there were some funny bits, and I give you points for trying to entertain. But there was no meat. When the jokes are ALL I can praise, then this review is sunk.
I thought your Medal of Honor review was bad, but this is the worst I’ve ever seen from you. This game gets a 1/10? Well Joe, the Final Verdict for this review is a 3/10. It’s shallow, poorly done, and the aint glimmer of humor doesn’t mask the sheer lack of effort you displayed here.
This was childish Joe. You’re clearly trying too hard here, and it isn’t working.
Did you really say “what about the story” to a Sonic racing game called “Free Riders”? Also, he covered all your points, I believe we watched different videos cause I loved this video, and saw the real pain Joe felt during this horrendous game.
Thanks. I could use a good warmup.
Yes, I did ask about the story. There was a story, right? I don’t know; he never even mentioned it. It would have been nice to know if one was actually there, don’t you think?
And yes, he did cover all the point I mentioned. Of course, the reason I mentioned them is because I thought they were bad. I believe we’re reading different comments, because you’re not making any sense!
In all seriousness, I don’t see how you can defend this review. While I can understand him not liking this game, he was clearly trying too hard to make this game look worse than it is.
He said it was the worst game he ever played in his life. I think that goes way beyond just not liking a game.
Dude, its a 12 minute review? What you want me to play the whole soundtrack for an hour – what kinda review is that?
I told you everything you need to know in the time I had allotted for myself. I dont need to touch on every single aspect of the game, you are clearly coming to the defense of the game because of personal bias which makes no sense since your very first sentence you say you havent played it.
Are you that much of a sonic lover? That you would dismiss every reason I gave for you not to waste your money on this piece of garbage?
Sadly, this is the sort of quality that Sonic Fans have come to accept.
I don’t know what I was expecting, but this wasn’t it.
Why, if I criticize this review, am I obviously a die-hard Sonic lover? I haven’t actually played a Sonic game in years, let alone bought one. What I am is a critc, nothing more.
But that’s besides the point. Like I said, I’m not criticizing the message, just the way it is spoken. The different points you raised seemed overly exaggerated and non-representative; in other words, nitpicks.
To the music: I don’t think it was unreasonable to hear some in-game music. You have a point about the time constraints, though. It just felt cherry-picked; going to youtube and looking, I found most of the other songs were aesthetically different from the one you played.
For the rest, I felt it was a bit over-exaggerated. The only time we get to see you actually play, controls appear responsive. I find myself remembering the Alpha protocol review, where you provide some interesting and poignant examples of when things go wrong by showing them.
On the whole, I won’t dispute your score, but the way this review was put together didn’t support the points you made. Maybe that’s being hypercritical, but I still consider them valid complaints.
Honestly, does anyone even remember or care when the last GOOD Sonic game came out? Hell, I think the last one people enjoyed and gave a shit about was Sonic Adventure 1. I don’t see how you could have a problem with Joe’s points in his review when they’ve been accurate for the series as a whole for at least 5 years.
