The Stuff Fanboy Dreams Are Made Of.

Marvel.com has dropped the news about the 3 main play modes for Marvel vs Capcom 3, along with some additional gameplay information.

The first two modes are more or less what you would expect, namely single player and multi-player, with the latter of course having both off and online functionality. The third main mode has been dubbed Mission and will feature character specific challenges. It will also employ one of the games touted new features, the License Card which is described thusly by the fine folks at Capcom:

“Your own License Card will in fact record your data, let you choose your favorite icon to represent you and record your battles and player points. The data in the License Card will allow you to see positive and negative points about your play style. By reviewing player data online, you can find friends and rivals to play against and then do “recon” as the fight starts up. The License Card will allow you to see who an opponent’s favorite team of characters is, number of wins and losses, what kind of attacks they like and much more.”

It sounds like an expanded take on the PSN or X-Box Live account, with some intriguing additional bells and whistles. Players will be able to see for themselves when the game is released in both a standard and collectors edition, which features an art book, exclusive prequel comic, and Jill Valentine and Shuma Gorah as downloadable content, on February 15, 2011.

They’ve said that he is not being included, nor are the Fantastic 4,, Man-Thing or the original characters of MvC2. They will only cameo, so they say. But if they are included as DLC if they change their minds…that would make me very happy.

Still why ARE they announcing DLC this early? I understand if it is about a few weeks away, but this? Eh, whatever, take what you can get. I just hope some more characters are hidden on the disc to unlock/are surprises to satiate before DLC comes out…or, more of it, rather.

Heh, I’m actually more interested in that character select screen than the actual news. There’s room for 42 characters there, but only 22 shown (which is actually six short of the number already announced – eight short counting the two DLC). So plenty of room for more unknown characters, but gives us a likely cap on the initial roster.

On the actual news, mission mode looks like it may be cool. Seems like a variation on the Challenge Mode of SF4 and BlazBlue: Continuum Shift, except giving more general directions rather than specific combos to perform. I got pretty addicted to BB’s challenge mode for a while, so it’ll be interesting to see if this has the same effect on me.

I’m still not too keen on having characters as DLC. If it was a few months down the line, I’d be more inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt, but this just seems like a cheap way to get money. Unfortunately, I’m a MvC Fan, so I will buy the game, though I’ll hold off on the DLC, unless it’s free. The Licenses seem like they will be useful, even if it allows people to plan out how to take you down beforehand.
