In honor of the classic titles, Retro Studios has ensured that Diddy will stay just annoyingly far enough behind you to ruin everything.
With Donkey Kong Country Returns bursting out of Nintendo’s tree house and into retail stores across North America this Sunday, players will soon be able to see if the company has followed through on their promise to deliver players the classic jungle japes of the series’ original titles. And while a classic franchise a great title does not automatically make (here’s looking at you, Other M), every piece of media trickling out of the Big N’s marketing department so far has kept us here at Blistered Thumbs extremely optimistic about the return of everyone’s favorite simian.
Seeing this latest trailer for the game’s seventh and eight worlds, however, it seems as if it may be wise to temper that optimism with a sense of trepidation, and ready our thumbs for some literal blisters. The brief look at what players will come up against as they progress through the game’s later levels makes it clear that Retro Studio’s take on Nintendo’s classic IP will be infused with moments of punishing platforming difficulty, that will test even the best vine-swingers’ sense of timing and precision. Feel like I’m exaggerating? Watch the trailer below and see all barrel-blasting, fire-dodging, platform jumping action for yourselves!
So what do you Blistered Thumbs think? Does it look like Retro has brought the pain in Donkey Kong Country Returns‘ later levels, and created a satisfying ode to the ethic of retro platforming mayhem? Or are you still one of the unconvinced few, waiting to see something from this title it hasn’t yet shown you?

Ridin’ Kross Kong Kountry on Donkey Back!
Donkey Kong returns to the Nintendo Wii with a update to the classic game play of its SNES counterparts…does this live up to our expectations or will we go bananas?
Music Mondays revisits the band that brought us tunes from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Bit.Trip Runner.
Was that chicken piloting a mech wearing Insano goggles?
Damn, this game is REALLY HARD!
Finally someone that’s rehashing old games and (hopefully) making them better
this gameplay looks really cool! I just might get it
Sweet!!!!
Dang 100% on own game right now o-o first time I’ve seen that
Oh my goood! New DKC! O.o Happy happy joy joy!
Ah, I miss games like this, specifically the Donkey Kong Country series. Excited that it’s difficult, more of a reason to play it
Evil Chicken? Ok…?
I dont think its gonna worth 50$
first in line cant wait
Higher the difficulty the better the game =D
Already pre-ordered this. And I hardly ever preorder anything.
I have been missing DK so much! Time to dust off the Wii.
Looks awesome.
Yeah same here
how come this game wants me to tell people how much i love bananas…..O.o
Wow I can’t wait to play this, it reminds me the good old days I was playing DKC2 and dying hundred of times playing the “thorn, bees n’ barrel” levels. I was scared this game would be too much like New Mario Bros, without a real challenge and made only to because they knew it would sell. I see they worked hard on the levels and I love the chicken boss, I’m sure it’s gonna be an amazing game. I still hope they’re gonna put some “secrets” in it and a Lost World and make the game less linear than New Mario Bros Wii.
Looks tough, but there’s no way its harder than DKC2. Still looks very tough, I hope they dont go overboard on this so that only platform masters make it. There aren’t many of those today, and that wouldn’t be a good idea.
I’m not sure if I’ve ever wanted something this much in my entire life.
oh my god lava rocket levels I need this so much right now
I love the SNES Aladdin refrence they threw in around the end.
Woot Chicsano! He’s got swirly glasses and everything!
I love more difficult games. One of my favorite levels in super mario wii was the ice level on level 9, it took me literally hundreds of tries, to get all 3 star coins in that level, but in the end I did it, and it was satisfying as hell. I’m glad more nintendo is reimagining some of these old plateformers, and making them more diffucult. I may not be a giant fan of nintendo, but at least it’s nice to know that if they are going to milk there franchises dry, they’re producing good milk…. one could even say lon lon milk….. okay that was stupid.
This is what I was expecting from Blistered Thumbs, instant updates. Great work Eli.
I am happy that this game looks this difficult. Theonly disappointment of New Super Mario Bros Wii was that it never felt as difficult as previous games, though that might be partly because of the ease of getting 1 ups and stocks of mushrooms, and difficulty is not nothing to be afraid of. This game will be nothing new, but sometimes you don’t want new, this will just be what we want from Donkey Kong Country, I wouldn’t want it any other way
