If you count the recent DLC that has been released for this game (Yes, there’s actually DLC in this game. Surprised?), there’s actually TWENTY ONE minigames if you count the Ten more minigames that the DLC adds onto the game. Other than that, it’s a decent game, but it’s only fun if you’re playing with more than one player. If you’re playing by yourself, you’re going to get bored easily.

And yes, I think it’s better than Sonic Free Riders. I’m not kidding.

Kinect does not look worthwhile if this kind of quality of games are all it has going for it. When will people learn it’s no about how quickly you get it out but how good it is once it’s out?

It just came out, it’s going to take developers some time to get used to it. A lot of systems start off with mediocre launch titles until developers learn to take advantage of the technology.

I see a lot of potential in the Kinect.

Personaly i prefer the Wii Sports, this game has more movment and games, but Wii Sports has more reliable movment and a fun skill meter. This is just microsofts expensive basic replica of Wii sports.

Aren’t real sports boring enough? The fact that he chose this over Sonic Free Riders just drives home the idea that the hedgehog is a dead horse Sega just can’t stop beating.

PC gamers could say the same about playing FPS games with a game pad, but as you can see, the FPS games on consoles aren’t going to die out anytime soon.

Depending on your background, it’s fun as long as you don’t take it too seriously.

Watching that Boxing made me want to dig out Wii Sports, haha. This does look like a pretty fun little thing, kind of like…Wii Sports, but what really intrigues me is the Volleyball. I’m not sure if I’ve seen something like that before, and it looks like a total blast. When I get a 360 with the Kinect, that’ll definitely be the first thing I check out. :)

It may not be the best but it does show promise for future titles if they refine the hardware (faster movements do not register as well) and the software (1st gen will always be less polished compared w/ newer games in which developers have learned from their mistakes).

Honestly, only entertainment I ever got out of any sports collection game was on the Wii Sports title where my brother threw the bowling ball into the crowd on his first try, poor bastards. Anyway, funny review, just still not enough to sell me a Kinect, clearly need to give it and Move a bit more time before I decide on which to invest in.

Oh wow, table tennis looks EXACTLY like the table tennis in EyeToy Play 2. The effects on the ball are pretty much the same, aside from updated graphics.

Anyway, not trying to hate on the Kinect, it actually looks pretty cool. Hopefully there’ll be some innovative games coming out for it.

Kinda disappointed that there isn’t a real tennis game on this compilation, especially since the kinect would probably be able to track your movements as well as your swings. Oh well, I guess I’ll have to wait for a Virtua Tennis or a Top Spin to come out for it.

Anyway great review Joe. The game actually does look like a lot of fun, and I kinda wish that was the pack-in title rather than kinect adventures. Heres hoping the Kinect lineup gets better, cause it would be a real shame for tech like this to go to waste.

Virtual reality Rules, understand that. but this is bad virtual reality. there is no platform to stand on. Nerf was invented based on the fact that you arent supposed to jump around in your living room. Go outside and play. I know because ive used virtual reality. they have railings around a platform to stop you from hurting yourself. thank you for listening and great vid.

I broke down and bought the Sony Move Bundle a couple weeks ago (since I was about to buy the camera only) And I agree that the ping pong is probably improved since it feels like you’re holding a paddle compared to just swatting your hands around. Those running games in Kinect Sports look pretty good though..I was getting power pad flashbacks watching you both run in place. :D

Great review, Joe. I’ve been really curious how the Kinect would pan out. So far, it looks like I’m holding onto my money and just sticking with my Wii, but I am curious how Dance Central turns out. That sounds like their one really good game for the Kinect.

Glad this game didn’t make you want to throw it back through the window, though. ;)

I’m sorry, but no… expect OLD Rare (Nintendo-era Rare) to do a good job… expect NEW Rare to do a mediocre job at best.

And look… 6/10… case in point.

My reply below says what I have to say about Rare. They USED to be a blockbuster company with amazing games (Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct, Banjo Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Conker and let’s not forget… they brought us Goldeneye 007)… but that was before they sold out to Microsoft and lost most of their best devellopers. After that, Rare’s been nothing but a joke of a company – ruining all of their classic IPs and shelling out nothing but middle-of-the-road games… at best.

However, Rare’s sell-out brought one good thing… the guys behind Perfect Dark, Goldeneye and all of the better games Rare made… the ones that jumped ship before the sell-out? They formed Free Radical, who made the Timesplitter series. Their last Timesplitters game, Future Perfect, was my favourite FPS of the GCN/PS2/XBox era. Unfortunately, Free Radical disappeared after their last game didn’t do well (Haze).

But even so… Haze is STILL better than anything Rare made since they sold out.

Kinect sports looks and seems to be ALOT like Wii Sports / Wii Sports Resort and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, but hey if the only console I owned was an Xbox I’d probably buy it.
One thing I’d like to know about the Kinect is if it gets confused if you play while alot of people are around, like at a party since most kinect games are party games that would probably suck.

I’ll just say that Ping Pong was one of the best games to play on the Wii so it is a little disappointing that isn’t so hot on X-box. Boxing sounds roughly the same as the WIi.

You know I’m not sure if it is funny or sad but really Stadium Events had some of the exact same mini-games just with a different controller, and that game came out all the way back in 1987. Is this really as far as we’ve come in 23 years? I know these are just supposed to be fun little demo games but I can’t help but feel like there should just be a little more there..

Hmmm good review…I loved it more than you seemed to Joe the only one I agree with on is Javalin it’s no good but I love boxing; but then I don’t play it like I am having an epileptic fit haha! I enjoyed single player it feels like a good workout and my friends who have played it have decided they want to get a kinect now. Table tennis is great I have not noticed any delay, the only learning curve is that you have to remember you can move left and right of the table and not just stand there like with wii sports, you actually have to move your body. I am not sure what you want from football (not frakking soccer!) but keeping in mind this is a family title if you were having to run during football people would be exhausted….like track and field damn I thought I was going to have a heart attack after the sprint!
However that is the point of games movies & music…everyone has different opinions! For example I like sonic free riders, the theme tune kicks arse! (Runs and hides from Angry joe)

I noticed there’s an achievement that popped up during showing of Volleyball that references Killer Instinct. Wow. I wonder if any Rare fans left were insulted by seeing it.

I don’t know Joe, part of me agrees with your review while other parts don’t. Then again, I haven’t been experiencing any technical issues. Either way, on your scale, I think a 6/10 is still pretty good. I do agree that Dance Central is the go to Kinect game. I had a few friends over, we played Kinect Sports for ~30 minutes, and then we went into Dance Central for a few hours. Its funny how a game with limited multiplayer support has become the multiplayer Kinect game.

P.S. – I like the whole Kinect month thing. These games take time to play through them so keep it going.

My god, that AI in Sprint did it in 9.10 seconds. That’s faster than Usain Bolt!

Joe, you will be hard pressed to find gamers which do not have a wii or the PS Move, but do have the Kinect considering that the Kinect is currently the most expensive of the options.

And I’m still certain Sonic Free Riders won’t be the worst Kinect game you will ever have the misfortune of playing. There’s a Deathly Hallows tie-in game that doesn’t look to promising, and we all know about your opinion on movie tie-in games.

so far the Kinect line-up looks…unimpressive. Not worth the money of the hardware at anyrate. :-/

Great review Angry Joe! Its interesting to know whether or not its worth dishing out the hefty price for a kinect. so far i’m not impressed with the line-up. Dance Central looks ok I guess.

I’m shocked that our german Telekom ( = T-Mobile) is so “big” in foreign countries. Didn’t realize that.

Godd review Joe. Very informative and fun to watch. Still I’m not convinced to buy a Kinect. =)

One thing I have to disagree about with your review is pretty much anything positive said about Rare.

They are not a good company, nor do they know what they’re doing… they USED to, but that was before they sold out from Nintendo and most of their good dev team left to create Free Radical. After that happened, Rare became a joke of a company.

-Their first XBox games were poor reconstructions of their more famous N64 titles (Perfect Dark Zero and Conker: Live and Reloaded), the latter was stripped of it’s best element (the fun and addictive multiplayer modes) and were replaced with generic garbage.

-They took their last biggest franchise (Banjo Kazooie) and turned it from light-hearted action-platformer to a hollow shell of what it used to be.

-Their best game series to date on a Microsoft console? Viva Pinata… the company that brought us Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct and freakin’ GOLDENEYE… and the best they could do is Viva Pinata…

…and, of course… Kinect Sports… which to me looks like Wii Sports with a few more games and a nasty freezing issue. I mean, bowling mini-game looked almost identical to Wii Sports with a shiny coat of paint on it. Even the animation sequence when you got a Strike in your video was identical (only the version on Wii Sports ended with a slow-mo on top of all of that). I did think that Track n Field was interesting (and reminscent of the old NES game with running and long jump), but other than that, it feels pretty much like Wii Sports plus… and like you said with the Kinect “freaking out” when trying to read your movements in some games (like Boxing), I’d almost even go as far to say that Wii Sports is superior in some ways…

I certainly agree with the score… slightly above average… not very impressive. I honestly would have packaged this with the Kinect and maybe added the “Adventures” stuff into the same disk. I mean, it’s not like the 360′s disks couldn’t support it…

If they would fix the problems with the boxing portion of the game I would really enjoy it more hopefully there will be a patch for this kind of thing.

For some reason I had this Idiotic notion that I would do the Kinect and like 3 or 4 games in the matter of a few days, LOL. That didnt work out – its turning into Kinect Month for me.
I’ll try to get some normal ones thrown in – but after this no Kinect for awhile.

Seems when it comes to games where you are supposed to have something in your hands, having something physical there is definitely a bonus (almost all the wii sports games).
But this does look like a solid first outing for a first gen game for the kinect.

I still need to get one.

I saw that and I was like “WAAAAAAAAIT just a minute here!” and rewound. I’m kinda surprised they didn’t flood the track and field sidelines with sponsor material. Technically, it WOULD be true to life.

You can see some samsung ads all over the game. I think it might get even more ads if you see the add spaces in volleyball or soccer.
