Its my personal opinion somewhere between Fable 2 and Fable 3 though it seems that Lionhead lost the spirit and just went straight for the money.

It’s a revolution baby! While the obvious tag line of Fable 3 regards the narrative structure of the game, the word revolution can be applied to so much more. Fable returns to the Xbox for its third installment, this time with far less promises from Mr. Molynuex. It is well sighted that ol’ Peter vouches for his games the same way as sexually promiscuous teenagers, and the results tend to be just as disappointing when revealed. I went into Fable 3 after finally forcing myself to finish off the last title. The stench of mediocrity emanating from the final encounter of that particular game perhaps lowered my expectations going into the beginnings of the new title. Boy is my face red!
| PROS | Diverse and open world, Loads to do, Some of the best voice acting in any game |
| CONS | Boring combat, Uncontrollable expression system, iffy inventory system |
| WTF?! | Building a chicken army, while dressed as a chicken |
It is no secret that the main story revolves around your rebellious actions against the current king, eventually becoming the monarch yourself. I was immediately concerned that the advertising for the title was giving away far too much information and that the title would be little more than playing out these actions, ending the game in an open world adventure after your rise to power. While the revolutionary part of the game is set in stone (following your destiny and all), the game is so much more than adventure by numbers. Rather than a lengthy tutorial on your path to becoming a hero like the previous titles, Fable 3 thrusts you right into the action. Within 10 minutes of starting the game you are on your way to becoming the hero Gotham, I mean, Albion needs.
The time of wild adventurers is very much dead. Time has passed in Albion and the age of industry has smeared across the landscape forever changing the way the world works. The beautiful vistas and village folk of the original Fable are long passed, replaced with the factories and the working man. The happy joy of the world has been swapped out for a much more dower vision of a fantasy setting. The initial introduction is surprisingly charming and sets the tone for the adventure perfectly. Thankfully, your father was the hero that saved Albion in the previous title (with no mention of the optional female hero) meaning you carry the powers of a hero. Unfortunately, your brother is the king and it will be a battle between blood that will see the rise or fall of the land.
The tale of Fable 3 is presented wonderfully, not only in visual design and level concept, but through the all-star cast of voice actors that bring the world to life. If like me you happen to be English, your heart will swell with pride upon hearing the work of the immediately familiar voices of Stephen Fry reprising his role as Reaver, Simon Pegg as the solider Ben Finn, John Cleese as your butler and the lose mouthed Jonathan Ross. Everyone one of these characters is unforgettable in their own way, which only serves to attach you to the latest title from Lion Head Studios. Of course Zoe Wanamaker reprises her role as Theresa, once again guiding your hero, but perhaps not telling the whole truth.
Of course the title wouldn’t be a Fable game if there was no element of choice in the story. While once again you are bound to fate and have no choice in the direction of your characters adventure, you can decide how to react. One of my major gripes with the older titles was the black and white way the designers laid out your choices. Either your hero was good, bad or schizophrenic. Never did a choice come down to anything less than ‘do you wish to be a douche?’ Fable 3 strays from this stringent formula with every decision you make. Due to your standing in the world, your answers have an immediate effect and a longer lasting ramification. Upon becoming King you are set a task that requires a humongous amount of money to complete, however certain people are in desperate need for money and you made several promises on your rise to power. I found myself picking the good option and fulfilling my promises to the people of the land, but found after my first day on the throne the treasury was over a million gold in debt. I won’t ruin the joy of finding out what the task is, however do understand that being a million in debt could threaten everything I fought to create.Fable III Review, 3.3 out of 5 based on 10 ratings
Man, I love these games, though Fable 1 was really short, the shortest of all the games, 2 was bit longer but the story was meh, but 3 has really taken 1 and 2 further imo. . 1 was way too short and what ruined it for me was the massive hype, because after the game was released and looking for help and things online, I was disappointed about the amount of stuff that was promised but then cut. 2 was better, but the story was really lacking for me.
I think 3 so far is the best. The quests are pretty amazing and fun, I found myself LOLing at many parts in the game, there is a lot of humor in the quests as well as many parts that are just fucking creepy, and yet still funny. One being the puzzle at Sunset House.
Many people complain about the story being shorts. I guess if you rush through it and never complete the non-linear quests or the dozens of non-quest puzzles, then yeah you’re cutting out a lot. But man, there are sure is a lot of doom gloom and creepiness in the game so far. I am about 25 hrs in, and am working on my kingdom.
Only complaints so far is combat seems a little lackluster, game gets laggy at times, which more of the non-quest puzzles were added to the story… the looking for keys, those gnomes and later on flowers get kind of annoying, but this game has been enjoyable so far and I am not even done..
8.5/10
Sorry, but an extremely well polished turd is still a turd… This game doesn’t deserve 5/10 let alone 8 :/
its funny because I love fable 2 and of course the original fable but everytime I play I lose track of what I am doing. I haven’t been able to just finish it. eventrually I will are these games just getting tooo big?
Waiting for it to come out for PC.
Each one tends to improve on the previous mostly. I hope they keep this series going for a while. Maybe a longer game, that would be good.
after you become king the game gets a little boring but still pretty fun
i still dont know i dont like rpg but it stilll look good
One of the wort parts of this game has to be the interactions with the people. The fact that you can’t pick what expression you do sucks, but whats worse is just the way the people work. To become friends, you have to build up relationship with them THEN you must go off and do a chore for them. What the hell?! What kind of friend is that? In any event, they just seemed so boring and like robots.
I thought Fable 2 sucked personally, but this game just gave me a good time all the way through, even if it was too easy and too short. The magic kicked ass, your character was so over the top with how he/she did emotions that it was awesome, no matter how gender bending it was. I did also like property renting system, really felt like a good investment, especially near the end. I didn’t like the decisions though, as they were always too good or too evil, but hey, I guess I was holding it up to ME2′s standards, still, wish there was someway to be slightly neutral yet still good. Overall, this game was hilarious, definitely worth getting my older brother for his birthday.
I found the game good in the sense of It was fun, but the (And spoilers are comming, so you have been warned)
Once you hit the “Timer point” after you become ruler, it more or less tells you to be a prick or your screwed, then it preety much pulled a Digimon at the end (By that i mean, making you believe this guy, AKA, your brother, is the big bad, then after you “win” you find out the randon demon spawn you found in the caves that looks like somthing out of Starcraft or somthing is the big bad, and you got to beat him) it just makes you feel cheated in my eyes, but besides the ending, i found it to be a good game. 7/10 if i had to rate it.
I agree as well, a very good review. I’ve owned the game since release day and my quibbles are pretty much the same.
I do have one correction though; there is mention of the female hero from Fable II. In my play through my character’s hero parent is referred to as my mother and the Queen. I have yet to find out if this is because I’m playing AS a female hero or if Xbox recognizes my profile’s info from Fable II (wherein I played as a female). It’ll be easy enough to find out however, when I begin a new game as a male hero.
Awsome review agree with everthing you’ve said. I got the game day one and Im still playing it now and finding new things to do.
Thanks for the review, I own Fable 3 and i think that your review captures my feelings towards it. Great voice talent, a very good story, and yes combat it’s kinda bland, and the fact that you can’t control the expresions gets a little bit old, and boring (there’s so much dancing with blokes that i can enjoy), but besides that it’s a solid game. Keep up the good work mates.
Very informative review. I’ve had the game for about a week and I’ve been enjoying it so far. My one major complaint has to be the glowing trail and it’s frequent disappearances. Total Fable 2 deja vu. Stupid glowing trail.
You know, the moral dilemma of what promises you keep becomes moot if you’re a shrewd enough investor and buy up every house early in the game. By the time I was done, I had 10,000,000 more coins than I knew what to do with. And there’s only so much you can waste just buying up every single item in game.
Hey everyone, thanks for all the comments. All your positive feedback has made a man smile. Hope to see you all around the site in the future.
as much as i’d love to say that i look forward to buying this game, i really dread it. i know im going to buy it eventually, but i HATED the second one with the passion of 1000 suns. all of the good things may outweigh the bad in this one, but it cant cover up the menal scarring that Fable 2 put me through.
Thank you for the review, it did flush out several details that I’ve heard mentioned in passing by other reviewers. In truth I can’t say this convinced me to buy the game or otherwise essentially because I’m going to be getting this shortly after it comes out for the PC anyways, only waiting a little longer to ensure that the pc version isn’t a poor port. Hopefully by that time the directional system is fixed as well as any other bugs that may be present.
All in all thanks for writing this up and devoting your time to the game in order to give us this nicely detailed review. ![]()
Finally another Fable for PC. I was so pissed when Fable 2 was only for xbox. Im gonna buy this when it gets little cheaper.
Really because I played this game and watched my roomates play through to the ending. Although I do have to give the game props for good voice acting and actually funny jokes, I find its the plot that takes an even more derivitive turn then the last game. There are NO surprises in this game, the opening to this game feels more like a bad comic with it’s “Let’s Do Something!” narrative from nearly every character. I understand it’s trying to show that a revolution is necessary but there are more suble ways to do this.
What follows the opening is quite simply a stream of fetch questing and combat until you become monarch, where you simply make a stream of choices as monarch, all of which are also derivitve and almost feel tacked onto the entire experience (somehow).
Great review, and surprising as well! I would never expect some of the things you’ve mentioned, I gotta play it. For me tho it’s about february till I get my hands on it, since Im a PC gamer only. But, You got me on my toes till then ![]()
Really good review. I think you expressed it prefectly – though it has problems and frustrating moments, they are far outweighted by all good the game has got to offer. I was looking forward to the game nearly all year, so when it came out I decided to pay extra for a Collecter’s Edition, and am so glad I did.
I am looking forward to any add-ons or dlc they come out with! (If there is going to be any, that is)
A good review, im kinda on the fence about actually purchasing this title after fable 2.
I think this is a “let my sister buy it and steal it from her” game.
Well, I can safely say you have encouraged to at least try the game. I still haven’t forgiven Molyneux over the ending to Fable 2
I’ve had this game for a week now, and I agree with every sentiment this review says. I was so excited when I saw the way the ending played out, and the vocal work made my day. I’m very glad I own this game.

This review is one of the best I’ve seen.
I’d like to add a comment about something I thought was retarded, namely the weapons and spells.
There are no normal weapons, only legendary ones. WTF? You can even BUY ‘legendary weapons’ at the smithy. So, I guess they’re not so legendary. Furthermore, the weapons all look alike. Only your hero weapons (which are the weakest weapons in the game) change shape.
And then there’s the magic. You only have a few spells at your disposal. And that’s not all; these spells don’t become more impressive as you use them. Say, for instance, I use the Fireball spell. As I use the spell, I expect it to become larger and more powerful. Heck, it could even change colour to reflect how hot it is. Instead, we’re stuck with a small fireball that hardly even illuminates the surrounding area.
Lastly, I’ll explain why I hated the moral choices.
Let’s say you have the following choice to make: ”mine Bower Lake for resources that’ll help save Albion and its inhabitants” or ”leave Bower Lake unspoilt and kill a lot of Albion’s inhabitants in the process.” I would choose the former, since that’s the most sensible choice. BUT NO, that choice is considered ‘evil’, whereas the other one (the one that involves civilians dying) is ‘good.’ I’m sure Bower Lake could be restored. The civilians, however, not so much.
There must be something wrong with the way the creators of this game think. They must realise by now that choices aren’t always so black and white. Too bad Fable might already be dead.
I really like your review and you are right about this game. It was a def disappointment. Basically they took things that were already sort of bad in Fable 2 and instead of making them better they made them WAY worse. For example the sanctuary…a menu like in fable 2 is better and way more accessible than a freaking 3D enviroment menu every time you need something including saving your game. Not only that , but then within that sanctuary there are doors to pass through to even get to the area you need which is even more of a hassle. The combat is far too easy…even easier than Fable 2 because in Fable 2 I at least got knocked out twice, but in Fable 3 I didn’t even once. the communication system is horrendous for doing actions on NPCs and other players. You have to be standing a certain way to even get it to pop up and then you just get a random set of emotions. Also the pressing and holding down A is ridiculous. Doing that with all the people is tedious and poorly designed. My brother is lead level designer for Ken Levine and those are people who really put effoirt into their worlds and characters just look at Bioshock series. Fable 3 was a lazily put together game that had potential, but was ruined by sheer laziness and poorly thought out concepts.
Thanks for rubbing Fable II in my face over & over again.. We PC gamers NEVER got to play it >_>
It’s clear just from what your saying about finding new gear and…buying stuff being “the best aspects of an RPG” that our ideas of a good RPG are waaaaay different. To me, the most important part of an RPG is the story and how much you as the player can effect what happens in it. This is why I’m not a big fan of JRPGs, as most of them have very little participation in the story, if any at all.
As for not being attached to the story, maybe you would have been more attached if you’d gone with your gut instead? I’m not saying this would definatly be the case but I know that every time I try to go evil in a game it usually ends with me just stopping because the evil character has turned me off and I just wont them to die.
I’ve only played through a short portion of the game so far, and I haven’t played any of the others. So fare it seems ok, nothing hugely exceptional but I don’t feel like I’ve wasted my money.
This game did really suck. You pointed out some of the bigger problems with it though. Although did anyone else bother to collect all the books in the game just to find out that there’s no reward? I did and was so furious I quit and haven’t touched it since.
I bought this when I saw it in store, I hope its good. I didn’t play much of Fable 2 and didn’t play the original so it will be a new experience for me. Fingers crossed I guess?
I liked the original Fable. The sequel hit me as a bit flat and too dumbed-down overall for my tastes. And most reviews I’ve seen seem to say that this one has been even more. It’s going to be a pass for me unless it’s gifted to me through some weird coincidence, as it’s not on any list I’d come up with.
Ruling the kingdom and the decisions that go along with it seem interesting, but I don’t feel that’s enough in and of itself to justify a purchase for me.
I seriously don’t like you as a reviewer. Watered down whiny commentary, semi interesting video and can’t even get a original icon but instead takes it from Doctor Steel’s website. Pfff
This is in response to “danethefurry”. First off, I loved this guys review and second off what the hell does an avatar have to do with anything? It’s people like you that shouldn;t be allowed to post on forums. Obviously others agree with me since you have like 15 thumbs down on your comment. Seriously, do you have nothing better to do than to waste everyones time and make a comment on someones avatar? get a life and do something productive or make an actual intelligent contribution to the forum.
I’m surprised you didn’t really cover the broken fighting mechanic.
Also, you apparently need more money if you want to be good. Making money isn’t for yourself, but your town. Also also, if you were a collecting kind of person, money might be more necessary.
I find your comments about Fable II interesting, as they were generally the opposite of what I’d seen. Money was too easy to come by for no reason in that game. Hmmm.
i want to play fable, but i never played any of the games that came before it. by the time i catch up to the latest fable it will be like fable 23 expansion pack 2 but i will try it looks fun
awesome
Red Bull gives you evil wings baby!!!
At least they got rid off the “earn money while you’re not playing” feature. I’m sure if I were to load up Fable II I would have about 10,000% of Abylon’s GNP.
Have you seen the advertisement for Fable 3? It has awesome music. I bought the band’s first album based on that commercial, but not Fable. Ad fail?
awesome review
nice review man!
Yeah Fable I is by far the superior of the 3 games. It contained good combat and good bosses. Fable II’s magic combat, which was my favorite aspect of Fable I, was completely broken and the fact that you couldn’t die made the game exceedingly boring. Also, pressing a single button does not count as a final boss fight.
If you like to walk around doing “stuff” it’s a great game, if that’s what you liked to do in Fable 2, this is great.
If you prefer Fable 1 and a more RPG heavy game. Then meh.
For me Fable is long dead, if they ever decide to go back to medieval times Fantasy game, I’ll buy, until then, nah, I’ll probably get it if I find it for REALLY cheap.
I can agree that the mechanics aren’t as good as they were before. I do like how weapons change with how you use them. Personally I think it should have been through some mini game or quest that you make your weapons ‘stronger’ like using the blacksmithing mini game for minor upgrades or changing an appearance?
But honestly the thing that pissed me off the most is after you save the world, you don’t continue doing anything Kingly. I ADORED sitting on the throne listening to both sides and then choosing the ‘good’ or ‘evil’ choice. One point that made me laugh is when I had to choose between the whore house and the poor home.
My response was ‘I don’t care how much the poor need it. I’m not turning down THAT kind of money!’ Also I don’t see it as being all that evil, it lifts the worries of the people, with sex. Also I was giving lighter taxes and such so why would we NEED a poor house? Yet everyone turns around and hates me. In the end I did enjoy the game though, but still hope it brings back more of the rpg. Also makes some of the choices less incredibly dark or incredibly light. I was pretty pissed when everyone hated me after opening a whore house when we didn’t need a poor house, and I was going out of my way to be good as often as possible.
One thing that also annoyed me is that there was no method to talk to everyone, as King. Really when there is an area that HATES me I wanted to gather them all up for a nice speech and free money, but of course I couldn’t do anything like that. X.x
i remember starting this game with the intro cutscene about the chicken wich was halairious lol i had a big smile on my face thinking this was gona be awsome then the in game graphics came up and everything was too blurry i didnt know what was going on i actualy thought it mite be my tv like somehow i took off 1080p or something but no its just the fucking game!!! this could have been so much better but im still having fun playing it anyway so it aint all bad but still the best was fable 1 by far its like they pulled a sonic and kept going down hill ever since they took the leap to a new system
To me Lionhead should of put more effort and time to Fable 3, that fact that it is buggy and it’s frame rates slow down are a hassle, also there are times when motion blur is appropriate, this isn’t one of them.
Nice review, looking forward to another one.
Going to pass on Fable III regardless of the review,
aint that into that kind of games.
I was and And am kinda still excited for this one, but I suppose It’ll make waiting till I get some money to buy it easier, considering that it’s in the state it’s in. Hopefully, by the time DLC starts to roll out, they’ll have fixed some/all the bugs .
One Thing I would like to say, however, is about the money. Apparently being a good guy means you don’t have as much monetary clout as you would as a Bad guy. My response to that is “well, duh!”. Being good is supposed to be a sacrifice in the face of tyranny and corruption. If Good characters were paid just as much as the corrupt bad guys who took massive bribes, it would be a bit odd.
I thought the game needed work. How much work? About six pages worth, which is how many pages I have written dealing with what Fable 3 needs to change in order to not be disappointing.
Fable was definitely more interesting, seeing as it was an actual fantasy game. Fable is slowly becoming more modern, which I can’t say I like. It just isn’t what Fable is. Or as my friend said “I don’t wanna have to deal with poverty and s**t, I wanna be able to slaughter villages with fireballs and kill dragons with f**king magic.” It’s crass, but he makes a point. Having to deal with real issues does allow for more morality, but Mass Effect does just fine and I haven’t had to give money to beggars yet.
Speaking of which, is it just me or does Fable 3 feel like Mass Effect 2? Working against a common enemy, then all of a sudden theres a final boss that nobody saw coming and wasn’t really explained at all?
The Game was a disappointment compared to Fable Ii all i wanted to see was Fable II with a more polished look and a new story line not a whole new game with reference to fable II. Iif you were someone who has not played the fable franchise you could start at Fable III and think its a great game but for people that now what fable II was like its a bit of a downgrade with better graphics.
I was really enjoying the game until I became king, which was very poorly done. (Very mild spoilers) If you didn’t have the foresight to save up a ridiculous amount of money (and who would really?) you had to break pretty much all of your promises and even then a crapton of people would die.
You want to know my biggest disappointment? The revolution you see in the trailer is nothing like the actually in-game revolution. I was expecting mobs of angry proletariats crashing into the royal guard, knocking over Logan’s statue, and watching a crown-wearing Logan look down from a balcony and have an “Oh Shit” moment. Instead it was just a couple of wimpy guards sword-fighting the occasional civilian, with occasional mortar fire. Hell, we don’t even get that cool costume.
Very short game, they had an interesting concept and I think they could have done a lot more with it. That being said, it was very enjoyable.
My biggest problem is the decline of ALL RPGs lately. Every company seems to be turning allRPGs into more Action/ Adventure games, or even FPS titles (Like we need more of those). Their excuse is because “that’s what Western Audiences like”. I say, it’s not what we like, it’s all that we’re given, so we have no choice.
In short, we need more companies to make more, really well done RPGs for those of us who are starting to feel a bit left out.
I was immensely disappointed with Fable 3, but strangely I didn’t realize it until I was finished. I beat it in about 8 hours, and that’s WITH doing a handfull of side quests. I estimate that you could easily beat this game in six hours. Not cool, Lionhead. The Fable series has always been rather short in terms of the main quest line, but I felt like I had to go way out of my way to encounter anything off the beaten path, and I really didn’t want to for the reasons you described, which also made all of the character customization options available to me moot, because I went through the game only changing my characters clothes when told to and never once changing the hair style.
Also, the game was far too easy. I only got knocked out twice in my initial playthrough (once when I was surrounded by a horde of hobbes and once in the final battle) and the big scary baddies at the end could mostly be killed with one ranged hit at level 2.
Most shitty game they have made yet. So dissappointed and mad lionhead for not being able to make a game. Like in the game. When there is 121 days left until attack, then they jump straight to day 1 and the attack begins and u cannot donate all your cash… So I let the entire albion fall. FUNNY SHITTY ASSHOLES AT LION THAT CANT MAKE A GAME! IDIOTS!
Seems to me they took out what made Fable 2 a good game and replaced them with a fancy/unecessary menu, i like the idea with levelling up your weapons but i think it was poorly executed, some nice ideas but i’m glad i bought Vanquish instead, even though it is short but the gameplay more than makes up for that with its slo-mo super suit!
Never liked Fable
Being a PC user, I only played the first statement of this game, and while I loved it, I though it had enough wasted potential. For what I’ve seen, read and heard about the second one, I think it was a good thing it never came out for PC. And now…let’s see if they do something different for the PC version: maybe modding it up a little bit could create a better experience than what you originally get; anyways…I think Molineux is not that much of an rpg gamer…and that suxs big time… he killed; not only once, but twice; what could’ve been his golden goose franchise. Bummer
I personally thought that this game was very underwhelming.
Your pet dog makes a return, much to my dismay. Don’t get me wrong, I *adore* dogs, but the dog in this game just gets on my nerves. It’s buggy as hell and I found it to be practically useless. I didn’t find a single thing while digging that was actually worth the unnecessarily long time it takes to dig it up. It would bark and bark telling me there’s treasure nearby, but only after I’d actually started opening the damn chest or picking up the key.
About 8 hours in to the game, I got married. After the cutscene, I couldn’t interact with anyone. I couldn’t accept quests, I couldn’t talk to people. Nothing. I ragequit and left it until the next day. When I returned I had to update the game, and it was fixed after that, but it was still incredibly annoying, especially as the same damn thing happened to me in Fable 2 – which never did get fixed. I had to start the bloody game all over again.
Also, being a good guy SUCKS in this game. Seriously. When you become king (WARNING: Mild spoiler) you have to raise £6,500,00 to raise an army to defeat the looming threat. However, you’re plagued by the decisions you have to make as king, because the good decision will always cost you a lot of money, putting you into debt. The only way to make ANY money as a good guy is to buy every building, stall and shop and hike the prices up. Then you have to spend time dilly-dallying around so that you can build money. It’s a terrible design.
Another thing that grated on me was the Sanctuary. Don’t get me wrong, it’s cool, but having to go into it just to get to the map screen got tedious quickly. The map is perhaps the most aggravating thing about this game, in my opinion. The map is just a rough guide to the area you’re in. It doesn’t show where you are on the map, because you’re in the Sanctuary while you’re using it, making orientating yourself highly difficult. The best way to do it is to find a landmark that you can use to identify your position, then try and go from there. The map is also vague, making it hard to actually find a route to your destination. You can’t place down a marker that the buggy Quest Line leads you to, which I think would’ve been easy to implement.
This screams out that it was released way before it was ready, which is a real shame.
The first Fable game was phenomenal. Fable 3 was a let down.
I like Action/Adventure games with light RPG elements, but even being the target demographic for this game i feel no desire to pick it up. I have been following the fable series from a distance but never heard enough good things about them to want to buy them. Good review, sadly it confirmed my impression of this game.
This game is on the top of my rental list, because I just don’t know if I will like all the changes.
good review
i am very scared of trying out this game for 2 reasons.
1 i found two average at best and one no better
and 2 the game sounds from what i have read fairly broken
-Peter Molyneux recently called Fable 3′s development “very, very tough,” and said that because of the game’s size and scope, “it’s got more bugs, more active bugs, than any game that [Microsoft Game Studios] has ever had in its history
I’m gonna have to disagree with you on a number of points.
But first, Agreement!
The golden trail was incredibly unreliable, combat was only a challenge if you were really trying not to die which had no point after the first time since you lost the achievement already, and the framerate lag did get really bad in places often making me miss targets or screwing the job minigames for me. Also, you’re right about the potions I never used the timeslow or summoning ones and only rarely needed to pull out food or health.
Now the opposition:
Firstly while the story was not without faults with the whole ‘darkness’ thing coming out of left field, if you don;t find a full scale revolution epic enough I’m not sure what will please you. Save the world? They had that too.
Secondly the music. The themes you heard were indeed reused from fable 2…and fable 1. They are the iconic themes of the game series and saying their use is lazy is akin to calling the use of the imperial march in the latest star wars product lazy. They were made for this series and are a part of it, which is not to say that new music should not be added as well, but new music WAS added.
Tertiarily,(that is a word, google it) Marriage/children. If anything these have become more useful as getting married grants you a certain number of guild seals depending on who you marry. Generally the richer they are the better some getting you as many as 10+ seals which is more than some sidequests. A child is also required for opening one of the demon doors and there is the adoption achieve. You only need it once but hey, there it is.
I’d say something on equipment but this is getting a bit long so suffice to say my life was made much easier by getting a better sword & rifle, and real armor hasn’t been seen since game 1.
Okay last one, Money. While the way you were playing the game in the latter half (being evil and whatnot) does indeed make the whole buying property and keeping it repaired unimportant, if you play the other side and are trying to save your people it could not be more necessary. Even with all of albion bought up you only make around 100,000 per rent payment, which means getting 65 such payments to save the people if you are fairly neutral. Being good though bankrupts the nation so you need even more. If you don;t have it your people will all die and you will be the proud ruler of a utopian graveyard.
In short, if you are playing a good char. and want to save people you MUST have the rent income because loot hero is not getting you all the millions you;ll need in any time frame that won;t cause you to gouge your eyes out.
Overall I played this game pretty much back to back to back with fable 1 & 2 and while I think I still like the original a little more I think it surpasses 2 due to the story and in any case stands up just fine on its own.
Sorry for the TL;DR
i couldnt agree more
Ah, Fable. I remember the first games where there was so much to do. Yet Alas it has slowly gone downhill while they are still fun to play. This game looks good though. Worth buying at least.
Doesnt seem like this went too well… I am not familiar with the Fable series but the trend of quality dropping in RPGs these days is unfortunate
The ‘Menu’ system reminded me of Terranigma though
Well, that’s a shame. I loved Fable II, but I think I may wait for this one to decrease in price. It looks kinda dumbed-down.
Great review. It’s unfortunate that Fable is becoming less of an rpg. It was already pretty light on the rpg side.
Agreed. I got a lot of comments on my YouTube video that this game was actually designed to be an Action/Adventure game instead of an RPG. To be honest, if that’s the case, this was an even WORSE Action/Adventure game than it was an RPG. Bring back Fable 1!
Yeah, while Fable II was great, it seems that there has been a decline since the first game. If anything I’ve always hoped that Fable would strengthen it’s RPG elements not weaken and/or remove them.
But if you think about it it seems to have more of the RP part of RPGs. Not just the leveling but actually playing a role.
