Dance Central - Angry Review
Angry Joe Shakes his Booty as apart of a Dance Group while reviewing the Kinect’s Killer App, Dance Central. Is this title alone worth the price of the Kinect? Watch, Laugh, and Find out!

Dance Central was touted as the must-have title for the Kinect since before it was even released, and it’s easy to see why. With the Rock Band series under their belt, Harmonix has a really impressive track record when it comes to creating excellent music-based games. Do they live up to that with Dance Central, or will the game have you never wanting to hear a Lady Gaga track again?
| PROS | Core game play is an absolute blast |
| CONS | Lacking in different modes and ways to play |
| WTF?! | There’s a real dance move called Keyboard Cat? |
The core game play of Dance Central has you dancing along with in-game flashcards that pop up on the right side of the screen. While this happens, a person on the screen will dance along to the music as an ensemble of excited people cheer them (and you) on. You really won’t be able to spend a ton of time looking at the dancer, though, as the only way to brace yourself for impending moves is to watch the flashcards closely. At first, the dancer and the flashcards compete for your attention as you try to get the moves down just right. In time, you will find yourself capable of performing songs without the need for flashcards, and the option to turn them off is available. When the initial shame subsided, I was proud of my ability to dance along to Lady Gaga’s Poker Face entirely from memory.
The game’s ability to detect your every movement is thoroughly impressive, if not frustrating. There were quite a few moments where I was fairly certain I was doing a move just right, only to find that I was doing it incorrectly because of placing my arm or leg just barely astray from where they should have been. The precision doesn’t hinder the fun in the least, but it will definitely have you retrying songs – particularly when playing on either medium or hard mode – in the same way Rock Band does.
Dancing is not something that comes easy to most of us, but Harmonix has found a way to make it an absolute blast. Some songs are harder than others, and some moves are hard to get down just right, but the rewarding feeling when you do it correctly makes it more than worthwhile. I’m a pretty bad dancer, and I don’t have a very strong sense of rhythm, and I still found myself grooving to the music with ease after a bit of time with the game.
Dance Central allows you to perform any song you want from the second you put the disc in, but there are still difficulty modes and items to be unlocked. If you beat a song on easy with three stars, then you can progress to the medium version of that song. If you get three stars on medium, then you can play the song on hard. The songs themselves are broken into tiers, with each tier containing five tracks of varying difficulties. They’re supposed to be sorted by their level of difficulty, but difficulty is an extremely subjective concept in this game. I found myself having much less trouble with songs at the bottom of the list than I did with some songs near the top.
The ability to perform every song right away makes local multiplayer an even better experience, but it also feels as though a career mode was sacrificed to make way for that ability. While there is a ranking system of sorts that you will constantly be cashing into as you perform songs, there is no story mode or option to tether songs together to perform them all at once. Perhaps I’m spoiled from being so used to having these things in Rock Band titles, but the lack of those options makes Dance Central feel a little bit bare bones in terms of what it has to offer. They could have created a career mode where you played as an up-and-coming dancer looking to make it big, but unfortunately we are left without the option to play the protagonist in a riveting dance story.

Dance Central, touted as the killer app for the Kinect, is a game that makes dancing fun for everyone. While it lacks variety in terms of different modes, its core game play is a ton of fun.

I want to give this bad boy a try sadly I can’t!T_T
Even though I can’t stand dancing, this looks strangely entertaining.
hmm so far it seems like the only good kinect game :O
What I dont get with games like these is why should I buy and play this when I can just go out and dance/sing with friends?
I would definitely play this if I had a 360 and kinect haahhaha. Looks like it could be a good time though id probably board up my windows while playing xD
This is the worst “review’ I have ever read. You suck at reviewing. Dance Central was a horrible game. Anyone that liked that game is a god dammed moron.
Dant, if I were you I would give up on reviewing games and take up a different hobby, like sucking Microsoft’s cock. Oh wait you are already doing that.
i liked the special effects used for freestyle mode
i rika da ddr so i might check this game out too
It sucks that the only good Kinect game is not my cup of tea.
Ah why do I keep watching and reading reviews for games I want but can’t afford?!?!
I imagine if my sister loves just dance on the wii she’d really love this…
Argree, this game looks awsome. But dont want to get gougth playing it, i would look silly xD
Maybe this game can teach me to dance!
I gotta say, I was surprised at how much fun this game is, especially with two people.
dance central is the only good kinect game out there it a must have
well i would rather dance and fail in frount of my girlfriend then play sonic riders
i have to be honest I don’t like the look of the kinect. but that doesn’t mean i don’t think this would be an awesome game. I really am just going to wait until other games come out to see if the kinect will be worth the price or not.
cant wait to get this looks really fun
= |
Kinect seems to really be backing the casual audience right now though; so I think I’ll wait for Child of Eden to come out and change the playing field.
Dancing games seems to be Kinect’s top priority at this point, I’d like to see how Microsoft will introduce other genre’s into this full body motion control.
Dance Central’s where it’s at baby
Angry Joe kinda reviewd this already, wicked funny
Dance Central is the main reason why I want kinect
THIS makes me want the Kinect more and more.
my friend loves it and im pretty sure im gonna like it too!
This is what I call a Dance Simulator. Not those things like DDR and ParaPara.
There, you are dancing.
Only thing I don’t like about this game – little amount of songs.
I honestly couldn’t dance while playing a videogame…I would feel really really stupid.
yeah, that’s why you don’t play this when anyone is around. It’s ok to feel stupid when your all alone, lol.
This Looks Kinda Epic ! I dont play much motion games but when i do there usualy A GREAT BLAST OF FUN Time with my friends
Even though I look ridiculous when I play, it’s the most fun I’ve had in years when it comes to games.
i probs shouldn’t get this for myself
Am I the only person who thinks Dance Central is stupid?!?!?!!
Awesome review Dant!
I enjoyed the game quiet a bit, even though its kinda hard for me. :3 And did really wish that I could play it simultaneously with someone.. but overall, I still think its one of the better games out for the Kinect!
I played it for the first time at Shadocon earlier this month, and though I was amazingly horrible at it, it wasn’t as lame as I thought it would be. I don’t play Guitar Hero or Rockband or Wii Sports or nothing like that, so this was a nice little change in gaming for me.
This looks like an ok game, they do make you go all out with the sillyness of dancing, and it probobly a blast to play with ![]()
Hehehe, a game that actually may make owning a 150-dollar camera worth the investment.
I want to play this game so badly :/
Of all my years of gaming I’ve never played a dance game. I think it’s time I pop that cherry.
I rented it, didn’t think it was worth my time afterwards…
A video game. That teaches you how to dance. And Rock Band 3 will be able to teach you to play guitar. It’s like they’re TRYING to get us girlfriends.
As far as I know this is the only game on the Kinect worth something right now. Hell, worth it in the end, it seems like a ton of fun!
We were playing kinect adventures till about 12am the first night I had people over for the we, we saw a two song demo for dance central, weplayed those 2 songs for an hour, contimplating anywhere that would sell us one at 1am… after thinking of no place we bought it the next morning, and are now having everyone over again just to play it! Dance Central is like DDR on crack! A++
I was thinking this would be fun for a game night, but the lack of two player definitely makes that a problem.
Looks fun but not 170 dollars fun.
Looks fun, but I’m fat…. Must not have heartattack and die while gaming…
I think the reason this game succeeds is because of Harmonix’s amazing team and that it’s like Just Dance but obviously without the controller. So there’s a large appeal to parents which is a really huge chunk of sells.
I could use a game that makes me get my fat ass off the couch. And if I can dance like fool while doing it, all the better.
I am so on the fence about Kinect I really don’t got the money for it. But even if I did this is the only game that interests me. So is it really worth it to buy Kinect for just one game?
Looks awesome, but I’m generally not into dance games. I’ll definitely try it if a friend picks it up.
If I could afford a Kinect this would definitely be an immediate purchase.
want to play but dont have enough for a kinect yet maybe soon, cant wait to see angry joes review
I don’t know, personally, I jumped on to the music rhythm games bandwagon late, with my first title being Guitar Hero 3. I still like playing the Guitar Hero games now, even if they are saturated and will never exceed Guitar Hero Metallica’s awesomeness, but with Dance Central, it just doesn’t really look like my cup of tea. Most likely due to the fact that I can’t dance (and for the sake of my dignity, may not want to attempt to), I may not also grow to liking the music selections (Lady Gaga is certainly going to be skipped for me).
This would probably be the only game I’d get if I get a kinect
this is the only reason i’d get a kinect
This looks like 1 of 2 reasons to buy a Kinect right now, seems like an awesome party game!
Man I really want to try out this game, but I really don’t thinks its worth spending $200 just for one game X_X
I don’t want to buy a Kinect, but I really want to play this game. Hopefully someone I know buys one for me to try out.
I want to play this, but i have no kinect ![]()
This is the game I bought the Kinect for and so far its been a blast! The issue is the relatively barebones extras – They are already developing a Dance Central 2 so we shall see what exactly they add to the table with it.
dont forget the DLC already out and more on the way. Hopefully Harmonix finds a new home soon before working on the sequel
At least it should be more forgiving than DDR…Should be being the key term >///>
I would say “Finally, a game for the dancing impaired!” but then I’d feel silly
